A civil society group, The Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEOS), has called the Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, a serial liar for claiming his administration spent N14.2bn on payment of modulated salaries and pensions of workers and retirees in the last two weeks.

In a statement signed by CSCEOS's chairman, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, and made available to newsmen, the civil society group insisted that the state government spent only N4.5 billion on modulated pensions and salaries and the leave bonus to the affected retirees and workers.

The body described Aregbesola’s claim as a mere propaganda to cover up the “illegal diversion of over N7 billion of N11.744bilion out of N84billion Paris Club funds accrued to the state by the federal government.”

The civil society group said this “singular action of Aregbesola has told the good people of the state what they should be expecting in the year 2017, as governance style of the state would be laced with propaganda and lies.”

The group's statement said despite the huge sums received in the last six months the Aregbesola’s administration still owed workers between eight to ten months salaries.

“Upon the various funds received in the last six months, the state government under Aregbesola is still owing the workers and retirees alike to the tune of 8 to 10 months arrears of salaries and pensions with gratuities respectively,” Sulaiman said.

Sulaiman said the governor “lacked moral and financial justification to spend N14.2billion on payment of four months and a half salaries when the state government would use only N2.3 billion for the monthly payment of full salaries and
pensions.”

The statement urged the “workers and retirees alike and by extension,
the good people of Osun State, not to be deceived by the misleading figures of the state government to pay modulated half salaries of four months with N14.2billion, after having the Ecological funds, Budget Support funds, Local Government funds, N3.5billion Bailout funds balance, State Allocations accrued to the State from the Federation Account and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state treasury in the last six months.”

CSCEOS insisted that the state government had “enough funds to offset the 8 to 10 months outstanding salaries and pensions arrears without further delaying.”

It challenged the government to come out from its “shell to disclose the actual amount of the monthly payment of full salaries and pensions in the State after the conduct of the 2015.

The group also called on the government to publish how every fund “accrued to the State government from the Federation Account was being spent in order to make the government accountable to the mass of our people as being demanded by the ethos of democracy and international best practices.”

It was reported yesterday that a Liberian couple based in Minnesota, Lawrence and Shelly Gross, lost their lives after they returned home for Christmas and allegedly ate poisoned food served by their brother.

New information indicate there might be other reasons for the death of the ill-fated couple, who had come home to mark their wedding anniversary.

According to FrontPageAfrica, the deaths were as a result of asphyxiation, secondary to carbon monoxide.

A family source informed FrontPageAfrica that Dr. Christopher Chinedu Obiorah, an anatomical pathologist from Nigeria, conducted autopsy on the remains of Lawrence and Shelly Gross and discovered that their remains had swollen brains, which is consistent with carbon monoxide inhalation.

Corroborating the preliminary autopsy report, FrontPage Africa said Police sources discovered a 1.5 KVA Ruina gasoline generator placed in the garage of the house to provide electricity for the room where the Gross stayed.

According to the Police source, the garage in which the generator was placed did not have an opening for the smoke to exit, as a result the smoke circulated in the house.

“The poisonous gas was concentrated in the deceased room which faced directly across the hallway where the inner door to the garage is located. The house’s windows too are air tight so ventilation was very poor in the house. You see, the thing about carbon monoxide is that it is odorless, tasteless and colorless. It is very difficult to detect and it’s very dangerous. The sad thing was that there was no exhaust pipe connected to the generator for the smoke to exit the building,” the Police source said.

No matter the impact of these new evidences, the tragedy of the ill-fated couple will still resonate for some time to come.

According to Rariya, this baby was born five months ago with rashes which have developed into bumps, causing him to be bed-ridden and near death. The parents cannot afford the amount of money the doctors are asking for, so the baby’s treatment has stopped, making the baby’s situation to be desperate and acute.

A facebook user, Omokhodion Gerry, shared these photos of an accident in Benin City on New Year Day where a car fell 50 feet down gully without anyone dying.

This car fell off the road at Ikpoba slope last night into the almost 50 feet gully before Jemila junction after Tipper Garage with 4 members of a family as occupants of the accidented Toyota Camry car, but the 4 of them came out of the car unhurt. The person in red top drove the ill fated car.

Some retired military men have formed a coalition to demand the prompt payment of their pension and gratuity.

The Coalition of Concerned Veterans, The Town Crier learnt, has issued a threat to embark on a protest in Abuja to draw attention of government to the non-payment of their pension.

The veterans, who are from various pressure groups within military retirees, said their cry had become necessary because of high cost of living caused by the current economic recession.

Mr. Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, the spokesman of the group, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to bring the veterans back on the pension payroll of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“We are not unaware of the dwindling economic fortunes of the country and the far-reaching effect in addressing numerous challenges in a country like ours. However, the welfare and well-being of military veterans is a top priority, because of their sacrifice in nation building and sustainable democracy .

“Therefore, if democracy must continue to thrive, concerted efforts by government must be geared towards not sending wrong signals to those still serving and would soon join us.’’

He said doing otherwise would definitely dampen the morale of serving officers towards their primary responsibility of protecting the territorial integrity of our country on land, sea and air.

“We the retired, remain their beacon of hope,” he said.

The spokesman said many of veterans served up to 10 years in active capacity, either retired by military or left service voluntarily.
He said that they were not catered for in the present military pension policy, but lamented that their Biafran comrades were taken care of.
He, however, acknowledged the efforts of the President Buhari in addressing the plight of the veterans.

“We also commend the efforts of the Minister of Defense and Chief of Defense Staff as well as management of military pension boards for organising an interactive session, where stakeholders bare the minds,” he added.

Properties worth hundreds of millions of naira were lost after a massive fire gutted buildings and shops in Warri metropolis in the early hours of today.

The fire incident, attributed to an electric spark, began around one am this morning and lasted till 3.20 am.

The Town Crier learnt that no life was lost during the nasty episode, but a victim, Miss Grace, a post graduate student, recounted her ordeal to reporters:

“I woke up to ease myself and I smelt something like a wire or fuse burning, so checked around the house to see if any of our sockets were burning, but I found none in our house. As I was easing myself, the smell became stronger, I opened the door and walked outside; behold what I saw was smoke and fire emanating from one of the shops close to our house . All my certificates, from primary school
to university are gone "

Mrs Rose Debekeme, whose shop's worth millions of naira was also destroyed by the inferno recounted experience this way, “I was in my house sleeping when the fire incident occurred. Somebody called me and said, ‘madam Rose fire has destroyed everything in your Shop.’ I started shedding tears. All my goods and the monies I kept in the safe are gone."
However, the Chairman of the community, Mr Samuel Edema, told reporters how the fire was brought under control.

"We had a distress call from our people about the fire outbreak, so I called the State Fire Service and Shell Fire Service came to our aid, while Hon Vincent Okudolor quickly drove down to Shell yard Ogunu. It took the intervention of SPDC to put out the fire though they came an hour after calling because they are third party."

Though Abia government says it has commenced the payment of July salaries to primary school teachers in the state, The Town Crier investigations reveal teachers cannot cash the cheques issued for payments.

The Town Crier learnt that the Local Government Education Authorities began to issue salary cheques to the teachers on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports, a teacher in Umuahia North Local Government Area (LGA), on condition of anonymity, said that the cheques could not be cashed “because they had no cash backing”.

“We were paid last in June. I got my cheque on Wednesday, Dec. 28, while some got theirs on Friday– but it did not specify which month’s pay.

“But, we take it that the cheques represent the July salary,” the teacher said.

Another teacher who identified herself simply as Anthonia said she collected her cheque on Wednesday but had not been able to cash it.

The Town Crier leanrt teachers got credit alerts from their banks on Wednesday to show that their salary had been paid but the bank balance remained the old amount of money.

They were told by bank officials that the cash had not dropped and was advised to wait until it did.

A Local Government Education Authority Secretary in one of the LGAs confirmed the development on condition of anonymity, saying the banks would go to the clearing house before they would commence cash payment to the teachers.

The Chairman of Abia State Universal Basic Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, declined to speak on the issue when contacted.

The 16 former Ekiti Local Government chairmen sacked by former Gov. Kayode Fayemi have rejected the N35 million offered by Gov. Ayodele Fayose out of the N3.3billion owed them.

Mr Ogunbiyi Olasunakanmi-Synergy, who led the sacked chairmen, made the rejection known at a news briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

The Town Crier recalls that the Supreme Court had on Dec. 9 ordered the state government to pay the chairmen and Councillors N3.3 billion as compensation.

In a unanimous judgment read by Justice Chima Nweze, the Supreme Court held that the sack by Fayemi was illegal and unconstitutional.

Olasunakanmi-Synergy said that an attempt to subvert the Supreme Court’s judgment would be resisted by “the good people of Ekiti’’ and called on Fayose to obey the verdict of the apex court.

He said that violating the Supreme Court would amount to a total disregard to the judgment of the court.

“All the local government chairmen between 2008 and 2010 met today and unanimously rejected the governor’s offer because accepting such offer will be tantamount to disobeying the Supreme Court,’’ he said.

He said that any negotiations from the governor should be done through the association’s lawyer, Mr Obafemi Adewale.

He called on the governor to act in the interest of the people who served the state “meritoriously’’.

The former chairman, therefore, said that denying them their benefit would not augur well for the members.
