Former Governor of Del­ta State James Onanefe Ibo­ri has chronicled the events leading to the sack of former Chair­man of the Economic and Finan­cial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
He alleged that Yar’Adua fired Ribadu because he was opposed to former President Olusegun Oba­sanjo’s preference of the late leader as his successor.

In a statement issued on Sun­day by Mr. Tony Eluemunor, Head of Ibori’s Media Office, the former governor who is serving a prison term in London, condemned the “bare-faced lies, that some journal­ists and news organisations”, espe­cially an online news medium, have continued to heap on him.

Ibori said that, “What makes it galling is that the matter under con­tention was the Department of State Services (DSS) report that stopped the Senate from confirming Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the EFCC”, and did not warrant his name being dragged in.

On the first allegation that dur­ing the tenure of Farida Waziri as EFCC chairperson, sensitive docu­ments were found in Magu’s home”, the online newspaper wrote: “The facts do not support that claim. A reporter for this newspaper exten­sively reported that event in 2008 when it happened, and is familiar with what transpired at the time.”

Eluemunor said that Ibori is not concerned with the fact that the publication chose not to cross-check the facts but “rested on an­swers a journalist got almost a dec­ade ago, and he did not say how he acquired that information, no, that is left with the online outfit’s readers to worry about. What Ibori finds ir­responsible is what follows: “Based on pressure from political gladia­tors of the period (among which were former governors James Ibo­ri and Bukola Saraki), then Presi­dent Musa Yar’Adua unceremo­niously removed Nuhu Ribadu as chairman of the EFCC.”
“Mr. Nasir el-Rufai has exposed this claim as a terrible lie. In his book, The Accidental Public Serv­ant”, he stated the source of the trou­ble he and Ribadu had with the late President Umar Yar’Adua.

“On Page 358, in a section en­titled “Umaru Asks Nuhu for Sup­port: the Beginning of Our Trou­ble” he wrote that Ribadu was so maddened that former President Olusegun Obasanjo had favoured Yar’Adua above Nasir-el-Rufai to succeed him as President in 2007 that he told a Yar’Adua to his face: ”Well , Obasanjo has not told me, and as far as the Presidency is con­cerned, I have my candidate for president, and that is El-Rufai.
El-Rufai continued on Page 359: “It took sometime before Nuhu fig­ured out Obasanjo’s games and what was really happening. Nuhu’s instinctive reaction was that of a typical policeman – dust up EF­CC’s files and comb for petitions against Umaru. Nuhu did not re­alize it at that time, but he was the one in trouble not Obasanjo or Umaru. He dusted up all the files against Umaru and launched in­vestigations.

He was clearly trying to take Yar’Adua out of the race and narrow all options to zero except for El-Rufai.”

The Governing Council of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), will recall 23 sacked members of staff of the institution.

The decision was reached at the end of the 91st Meeting of the council held at the National Universities Commission, Abuja and signed by its Acting Registrar and Secretary, Obafemi Oginni.

The Head of the Directorate of Public Relations of the institution, Emi Alawode, disclosed the decision on Friday in a statement released in Abeokuta, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent.

The statement said the decision to recall the sacked workers was taken following series of appeals from within and outside the university community.

However, the council in the communiqué directed that each of the 23 members of staff concerned, should, within 48 hours, send a Letter of Appeal to the Secretary, Council Committee on Investigation of the Lingering Industrial Unrest and Tension, Acting Registrar’s Office between Friday, December 16th And Monday, December 19th 2016.

Other resolutions reached at the meeting, according to communique, include: The constitution of a committee to investigate the lingering industrial unrest and tension in the institution.

It will be recalled that the university’s governing council recently sacked the 23 members of staff on allegations such as stealing, absconding from duty and wilful disrespect to constituted authority.

It sparkled a protest that led to the closure of the institution, with bonfires and vehicles used in blocking the road to the institution

Security personnel, including the men of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), had to be drafted to maintain peace and orderliness.

An investigation by Saharareporters has unmasked the identities of collaborators who played a role in leaked intercepted telephone calls that revealed Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State discussing the rigging of recent legislative elections in the state by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who had collected bribes from him.


Our investigation showed that the first person to come on the telephone call to Governor Wike was Dumnamene Dekor, a former Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. During the rerun election that took place two Saturdays ago, Mr. Dekor ran as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to represent Khana/Gokhana Federal constituency in the House of Representatives. However, he lost to a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the intercepted telephone call, Governor Wike addresses Mr. Dekor as “Dum Dekor.” The former Deputy Speaker was the one heard in the telephone conversation talking about moving INEC materials to a “Rack Center.” He, however, complained about intimidation by security agencies, a complaint that so infuriated Governor Wike that he threatened to kill the INEC officers he had bribed to facilitate rigging in the election.

Our investigator also found out that the only female voice in the telephone conversation was Betty Apiafi, a PDP member of the House of Representatives representing Abua-Odua/Ahoada East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. Ms. Apiafi could be heard complaining about the lack of funding to bribe more INEC officers and youths to do Governor Wike’s bidding.

A source in Rivers State disclosed that Ms. Apiafi was handed the task of offering a N5 million bribe to each electoral officer. In the leaked conversation with the governor, she complained that she had run out of money.

Another key player in the telephone call is Owolobi Ofori, aka “Owoh.” SaharaReporters learned that Mr. Ofori serves as Governor Wike's domestic aide. Several sources in Rivers State identified him as the person the governor entrusts with dirty and sometimes deadly tasks. They added that Mr. Ofori liaises with gangs and armed cultists in the state, often taking funds from the governor to them. He and Ms. Apiafi hail from the same local government of Abua-Odua.


Since SaharaReporters exposed Governor Wike’s audiotaped conversation, the governor and his aides have been running helter-skelter in an attempt to deflect attention from the criminal electoral scandal. He led a protest march to the police headquarters in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. He later invited a few bloggers and journalists to a meeting and enlisted them to claim that the leaked audio was a product of voice altering software.

On its part, INEC has kept mum on the scandal. SaharaReporters contacted a senior official of the electoral commission in Abuja to ask about a response to the scandal. The official asked not to be named and claimed that INEC would look into the scandal when it meets soon to review the conduct of the election in Rivers State.

Saharareporters learns that the governor’s telephone conversations include several INEC officials, politicians, government officials and youth leaders who engaged in violent election rigging in the state.

A six-minute leaked audio revealed how election officials drafted from Plateau, Anambra and Oyo were bribed in batches as they arrived the state. Governor Wike threatened to kill some of them led by an INEC official he referred to as “Shettima” in the leaked audio.

The Abia State Government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure increase in her internally generated revenue from the 2017 fiscal year. Here is a press release coming from its chief press secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos.


Abia State Government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure increase in her internally generated revenue from the 2017 fiscal year.

To this effect, the state has banned the use of agents as revenue collectors in the state in 2017.

A statement signed by the State’s Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, who is also the Chairman of the State’s Internally Generated Revenue Council reads:

“This is to inform all concerned that, the IGR Policy of the state did not provide for appointment of revenue agents.

“MDAs are by this notice directed not to appoint any agent for the year 2017, as Abia State Government will not be held liable for any contravention.

“All Revenue matters must be directed to the IGR council. Please be guided.”

Abians, particularly residents of Abia and Umuahia, are therefore requested to avoid paying any revenue agent or “consultant” who claims to be acting on behalf of the state from the fiscal year 2017 and going forward.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, has sworn in two new permanent secreatries.

With the appointment, he has appointed four teachers as permanent secretaries, the first of the kind in the state.

"This is a reward for hard work, loyalty and also a call to greater service. With this, we have appointed four teachers as permanent secretaries which is the first of its kind. By this appointments, we encourage all hardworking civil servants in the state to keep up the good work. The appointees will man critical agencies where their proven character and wealth of experience in the civil service is needed. We are reorganising our public service because it needs experienced leaders to drive the systems we are putting in place which will entail plenty of training. The search for other deserving civil service is already ongoing," he said.

The Senate has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend and ensure prosecution of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

Babachir was alleged to have breached the law in handling contracts awarded by the Presidential Initiative for the North East (PINE).

The Senate’s resolution on Wednesday followed presentation of a report by a Shehu Sani-led ad hoc committee.

Mr. Lawal’s company, Global Vision Ltd., is one of the companies indicted by the committee for allegedly benefiting from inflated and phantom contracts, having been awarded over N200 million of contracts to clear ‘invasive plant specie’ in Yobe State.

As of the time the contract was awarded in March 2016, according to the committee, Mr. Lawal was still the director of Global Vision, having resigned just in September, yet he was a signatory to the company’s account.

His directorship of the Global Vision while being a public official – Secretary General of the Federation – contravened Nigeria’s code of conduct for public officials as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution, the Senate held.

“Babachir Lawal is a disgrace to the All Progressives Congress,” said Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West); adding that the SGF “is exhibiting anti-Buhari tendency”.

Mr. Melaye led the call for Mr. Lawal’s resignation and prosecution, after the presentation of the report.

Also, Isah Misau (APC-Bauchi) said Mr. Lawal should resign immediately or be suspended and prosecuted afterwards.

Mr. Misau said the Buhari administration was having challenges with performance delivery “because of people like the SGF”. He said the SGF was the one responsible for non-constitution of many boards of the federal government.

Mr. Misau said Mr. Buhari should sack and ensure prosecution of the SGF to prove seriousness of his anti-corruption campaign.

“Without the prosecution of the SGF, this anti-corruption fight will go nowhere,” he said.

That of SGF was one the numerous scams uncovered by the report, said Adeola Olamilekan (APC-Lagos). He said Mr. Lawal should resign and be prosecuted.

Mr. Sani’s report revealed that PINE took advantage of the emergency situation to award fraudulent contracts; and also that the realities in the IDP camps was not commensurate with funds released.

The Senate therefore resolved that PINE should turn in all documents pertaining to contracts it had awarded, and that all government officials, apart from Mr. Lawal, found to have contravened law in the processes of the contracts should be prosecuted.

He noted that the victory of the PDP during the rerun elections was the best birthday gift for Governor Wike from the good people of Rivers State .

A girl was left unconscious after a group of armed men attacked her at her shop, leaving her seriously injured.

The sales girl escaped death after some unknown men attacked her in Sokoto and tried to kill her. It is alleged that the men came to rob her when the encounter took place.

According to the information shared by Rariya, the girl managed to escape and received treatment at Sokoto Hospital Clinic.

It was a tragedy when a motorcyclist lost his life yesterday in a fatal accident at Chevron Roundabout just by the Lekki Conservation Center. A tipper driver who was carrying blocks of cement crashed into the motor-cyclist, causing the tragedy. According to reports, the tipper driver attempted to run but was apprehended, beaten up, and handed over to the police.
