After the validation of the proposed 3D by the sponsor and the parish priest, we had to wait a couple of days to be commissioned.

On the 24th of September 2020, we took possession of the site, started with the following activities.
1. Clearing of grasses around the site.
2. Uprooting of shrubs.
3. Procurement of Materials: Sharp sand, cement, Reinforcement bars, wood, shovels, headpans, nails etc.

On the 25th, work started proper, with the cracking of the old lintels and column positions. The removal of the old lintel would help us elevate the foundation by adding more courses of blocks and redoing a new lintel. We made provision for a total of 13 columns with 16mm bars.

I was going through my PC and stumbled on a project we did in the time past, I decided it was worth sharing here.
Stay in touch as I take you through.

PROJECT CHARTER
1. Title: Remodeling and completion of Chapel of EUCHARISTIC ADORATION.
2. Location: Isiala Mbano, Imo state.
3. Objective: provision of a place of adoration.
4. Deliverables: Remodelled design, Carcass.
5. Preassigned resources: water, storage space.
6. High level cost: #2,500,000
7. Schedule: not imposed
8. Scope: Redesigning, Elevating the substructure, Earth filling, casting of the mass concrete, Roofing, Plastering.
9. Stakeholders: Sponsor, Clergymen, layfaithfuls, workmen.

The execution of this project actually spanned from October 2020 to April 2021 (Dedicated on the 26th of April 2021 by his Lordship)

Introduction.

A worthy son of the community who recently buried his dearest father was appreciative of the role the Church played in the successful burial of his late Dad, As a result he thought it wise to give back to the church in his own little way.
The priest in charge had to solicit for the remodelling and completion of their Chapel which was still under construction but abandoned a long while ago.

We were contacted on the 15th day of September, 2020 by the sponsor to go carry out a reconnaissance on the said project and feed him with possible solution. A visit to the site was made on the 16th of September, with the parish priest present, we were taken round the site and we collected a high level requirement to work on; 1.Redesigning 2.Elevating the substructure 3.Creating an elevated altar 4. Creating a Sacristy attached to the existing structure (this was later thrown out by the client due to paucity of funds).

After the site meeting, we kicked off with the design, validation of the design was done by both the sponsor and the parish priest on the 18th and 19th day of September 2020.

Picture showing the state of the project as at September 2020.

I will be right back.

UC92,

The objective of any research is to collect, organize, analyze, summarize data and to make inference on the data.

Generally, the approach for conducting a research is first to identify the research problem, review literature on the research topic, identify variables and formulation of objectives.

Second, identification and collection of data and sampling of data, then the use of statistical inferences and descriptive statistics.

Finally, results are interpreted and conclusions are made.
The approach is mostly the same for all research work!

On the question of government funding:
You can enquire from your 'professional body' or even the department. They're in the best position to direct you.

Good luck to you!

I really appreciate your response.
Thank you my Oga.

UC92,

Good to see you here bro!

Ask your 'pressing questions', there are capable hands to answer them here!

Thank you my Oga.

I actually do not know your discipline and others here but I will like to know if the research approach is the same for every discipline.

M.Sc Architecture here in Nigeria is a design based research, where the candidate identifies a problem and proffers Architectural solution to such problem. Usually the Architectural solution comes in the form of a dissertation like every other research work combined with an Architectural design.
For example I worked on "Special Education Centre; A study of wayfinding and circulation in public buildings", at the end the outcome was an Architectural design of a Special Education Centre with the design being able to solve the issue of circulation and wayfinding for the visually impaired and physically challenged persons.

Now, I intend to work on "Adopting sustainable approach to special needs Architecture" for my Ph.D Architecture program, which will commence this year.

What research approach or methodology should I be expected to adopt, I don't know if you get me. Though I understand I will do some coursework before the research proper, I just want to be ahead.

Another question here, can one get funding from the government for the research work, my school is a state school in South East Nigeria.

I really wish to get info from a PhD Architecture holder or a candidate here.

Thank you sir.

200 years? There's no black that won't fade a bit, longevity depends on the coating.

Although I've answered this in my Roofing thread bit the one thing that struck me here is that you want to use black and you don't want it to fade.

Just go straight to Tower Aluminum in Ikeja, Lagos.
They have black that will last longer than the others before fading. It's a bit pricey.

Tower Aluminum, First Aluminum, Sumo aluminium at Mangoro.. etc..

***Try to use 0.55mm and not 0.50mm.
***Avoid Metcoppo if you want peace of mind.
***Normal vorrugation of longspan preferred.

This your house looks like it's around Akingbile or Moniya axis?
What is the issue with metcoppo if I may ask?

Happy New year to each and every one of us here.
I have a B.Sc and M.Sc degree in Architecture and I am about to commence a Ph.D in Architecture.

I am yet to see any Ph.D Architecture student here. Please kindly indicate if you are one, I have some pressing questions to ask.

Thanks in anticipation.

Conflicts are inevitable part of our daily living. They do not need to ruin or redefine our relationship with people. They just need to be addressed and resolved rather than allowing our frustrations to build up because issues are not maturely addressed.

I’m not here to discuss who was right or wrong. Who ought to call or not. We just need to move forward.

I understand this hence the reason I didn’t bother to ring you the 3rd time. I could have called earlier but I was on my way traveling that night.

I could have done 1st and 2nd Jan but I know those are days we would be busy with our families and loved ones.

If you ask me as a neutral person, what’s the best way to deal with the issues at hand? I’d say “Have a conversation (one-on-one) with the other person involved.”

Unfortunately my Whatsapp messenger app has been acting funny lately and your request to me was to do a voice note which shows to me you might be busy or not ready for an open discussion.

Avoiding open discussion is not only dysfunctional. It is counterproductive.

When we refuse to communicate, simple misunderstandings often degenerate into long-term and systemic challenges like we are right now....

...speak with the QS
...speak with Mr Fortune
...explain to nairaland

To make things clear, I don’t do “we” against “them” and I don’t assume other people’s position. When issues arise, I deal with them.
I am frustrated at your antics honestly.

Please let help one of our own. She is a young lady doing her PhD in Florida, USA. She needs us to participate in her research survey. The topic is very interesting about family planning and size.
She is my friend and it is my little way of suporting such a young girl doing her phd. She is less than 30 and almost done with her phd. That is amazing. Please, show support. I appreciate.
Survey takes about 30 minutes online. She is also offering airtime as a show of appreciation for your time.
Thank you as you participate.

Done.

I wish your friend success.

I don't think they ignore it, is all in the interest of the client, no client would be happy that a segment of a land purchased would be chucked off, if these drawings do go to approval it is in the position of the approval board to check if these things have been correctly implemented.
If I may ask what is the essence of setbacks?
An individual's interest shouldn't supersede public health and safety.

Architects should be at the forefront of ensuring standards are met, it starts from the drawing board and not at the town planning office.

Its unfair to call it rubbish, if you live in Ibadan where the value of land is buy one, get five as bonus. grin grin
Lagos Island is densely-built, a Prime Business District where Billions of Naira are turned-over on a daily basis.
You wont get a full plot to buy in such areas, even if it is available, they wont sell to you, they know the value.
Again, some of these plots are 3rd generation, inherited land and it has been divided and divided all over again.

Building code (set backs et al) are not enforced and cannot be enforced to the letter, in such areas and l am sure they have building approval that takes their unique situation into consideration.
But the building shown in picture are solidly built and cannot be refer to as rubbish.

A lot of houses, even abroad, have no parking space and occupants have to park on the street, in front of their house or anywhere else they can find space. They are given a parking sticker, to ensure the process is not abused.
You might be right about the structural integrity of such buildings, but what about the thermal comfort within the buildings? Over there in developed countries, people can afford to use active means of ventilation and lighting but can same be said of here?
I wonder how such buildings gain approval.

Cement now sells at #4800 per bag, location: Port Harcourt.

That land cost me 18.5m.

Alili!!!

No vex Oga.

Relating the design to your land size, you will battle to get a setback of 750mm(2ft6) on the left and right side which isn't adequate for effective air circulation and lighting.

The circulation within the spaces isn't good enough.

Generally I don't think any reasonable planning authority will approve this owing to the inadequate setbacks.
