I was in Oba in Anambra state 2weeks ago and saw a 5 storey building still under construction that collapsed, luckily the workers that were resident on the site just went out to get their dinner, on getting back they couldn't see their building again.

Oga sir, The TOLERANCE here is an engineering term, the limit of allowable variation in physical dimensions.

If for instance you hope to install a foreign door of 900mm on your build, your builder can decide to create doorways of 950mm, the additional 50mm will help to cater for the door bracing and the mortar renderings during installation so at the end you still have your door of 900mm.

Generally, poor thermal comfort.
Specifically, spaces on that part of the building will experience little or no ventilation or lighting.
Peradventure the landlord at the adjacent plot decides to build so close to the fence like that one, then comes a fire outbreak, fire will easily spread to the next property.

When you commission an architect to produce a building drawings for a client, what are ALL the documents the architect will provide to the client in line with Lagos state regulatory agencies guidng building plans etc?

In the best interest of your organization, it is good that you report him to the senior management.

Asking for the waybill may not entirely eliminate the possibility of cheating but it will rather keep them on their toes.

30 tons should be 30 tons anywhere, anytime.
The issue is this, complete 30 tons can only be delivered by a trailer, most atimes, accessibility to sites is usually an issue considering turning radius and the strength of the soil to be able to allow a trailer to deliver.
So what those vendors do is they promise you 30tons and end up coming with 25-27 tons knowing fully well that a trailer can't access your site. So they come with a double axle truck. That way they make extra profit.

If you really want to know about this, request for waybill before they offload the material at your site.

The waybill usually contains information like
Quantity of material in tons or kg
Size/grade of material
Number plate of the vehicle
Time of departure from the company.
Note: this is if you are buying direct from the company.

1. Don't you want the occupant of the rentable room to be cooking?
2. The laundry is a wet area and won't function well at that point you have it. For a laundry space, consider plumbing, light, a space like a verandah where one can hang-dry clothes during rain or when there is no dryer.
3. Your ducts are poorly positioned and represented.
4. The lobby at the first floor is dead.
5. It will be nice if you can increase the width of the family Lounge by 600mm.

To our Structural Engineers and Builders, please what structural purpose do colums on the upper floor of one storey buildings serve?

Do they not constitute excessive load on the house as the ones on the ground floor should have provided adequate support to the upper floor?

The roof is a structural member, so it offers support to the roof too.

This should be a thread of its own! This one even try, some plumbers are ignorant in this aspect. They just layout bathrooms any way they feel and will tell you that is the usual practice. I had to change the whole layout of all my bathrooms when I saw what a plumber did without inspection.

When you build without the requisite drawings, your workmen will have no choice but to do guesswork.
So the plumber may not be blamed entirely.

The knowledge of building Climatology comes to play here. It may interest you to know that windows on the leeward part of the site will receive minimal ventilation no matter their size.
Things like these are considered for thermal comfort in dwellings.

Some ppl are not just big enough to contract an architect they are just overreaching. Professionals are for the elite. Your 100k will not get you that quality job 300k will get someone else. A bitch on the forum once propose to pay 50k for a complete drawing plus 3d, now I'm sure when she finally gets a quack to do it at that price and something goes wrong her mouth will be running sharp too that architects don't know their jobs.

You don't get design of just 8sheets of paper and you are bold to say that you commissioned an Architect, there are levels to these things.

If you are an Architectural technologist, graduate, qualified or a registered Architect, you don't need to be told to walk away when such offers come your way.

Well, I have seen plans and seen more plans. Sometimes in the middle of some projects, I reach out to my architect for meetings on what he was thinking when they hatched the plans. And the revelations are quite surprising sometimes. Choices of what to do to some designs will always need the input of everyone, architect, owners, structural engineers and contractor. This is the only way ensure that what was drawn matches what gets built.

Architecture is not practiced in isolation. It is unfortunate that stakeholders do not pay attention to designs, It amuses me when some so called "Architects" brag about delivering a design project in 48hours, It doesn't work that way.

Synergy is of essence in design projects, virtual and physical meetings should be held for validation at every design stage. In schools of Architecture, juries are held before any design can be certified fit, same should apply to real life project.
To clients, don't agree to designs done and submitted within 48hrs, there are chances that lots of details were overlooked or it was just all copy and paste.

It is about time we draw a line between Quacks, Architects and Qualified Architects

Sometimes, when I'm sent some designs, I request the Architect to explain how he intends to achieve some aspects including materials to use.

Because some of these designs give sleepless nights.

This is the reason why the Architect's services does not end at the design stage. The Architect should be involved in all aspect of the building procurement processes.
It may interest you to know that there are other additional services which the Architect should be engaged to carry out, such as EIA, Post occupancy evaluation etc.

It's exciting that you hope to pursue a rather progressive topic in your PhD. Not many recent research in the field of architecture is looking towards sustainable development at the core of the work.

In response to your first question, have you thought of your research questions for this topic? I do believe they would guide your methodology or approach. It's one thing to have a tentative topic and another thing to have a drafted proposal, which would guide how you choose to answer your research questions, collect and analyse data and so on.

To your second question, there are very few funding opportunities in Nigeria. Look abroad, my piece of advice. Your topic seem to be interesting and with a good proposal showing your intent, especially solving architectural problems relating to people with special needs, this would receive a lot attention and possibly a funding.
