It may interest you to know that windows on the leeward part of the site will receive minimal ventilation no matter their size. Things like these are considered for thermal comfort in dwellings. |

dangoteinlaw: but when it's time to bargaining price you don't draw the line on quacks. You want an architect you paid 50k to spend 3weeks on your designs because that your 50k will make him somebody right? Maybe they can come to your site and become your bricklayer too. Some ppl are not just big enough to contract an architect they are just overreaching. Professionals are for the elite. Your 100k will not get you that quality job 300k will get someone else. A bitch on the forum once propose to pay 50k for a complete drawing plus 3d, now I'm sure when she finally gets a quack to do it at that price and something goes wrong her mouth will be running sharp too that architects don't know their jobs. Lol. Your points are valid. Your last paragraph is actually the reason why I said it is time to distinguish between Quacks and Architects. You don't get design of just 8sheets of paper and you are bold to say that you commissioned an Architect, there are levels to these things. If you are an Architectural technologist, graduate, qualified or a registered Architect, you don't need to be told to walk away when such offers come your way. |

spyder880: Well, I have seen plans and seen more plans. Sometimes in the middle of some projects, I reach out to my architect for meetings on what he was thinking when they hatched the plans. And the revelations are quite surprising sometimes. Choices of what to do to some designs will always need the input of everyone, architect, owners, structural engineers and contractor. This is the only way ensure that what was drawn matches what gets built. Architecture is not practiced in isolation. It is unfortunate that stakeholders do not pay attention to designs, It amuses me when some so called "Architects" brag about delivering a design project in 48hours, It doesn't work that way. Synergy is of essence in design projects, virtual and physical meetings should be held for validation at every design stage. In schools of Architecture, juries are held before any design can be certified fit, same should apply to real life project. To clients, don't agree to designs done and submitted within 48hrs, there are chances that lots of details were overlooked or it was just all copy and paste. It is about time we draw a line between Quacks, Architects and Qualified Architects |

KolaShangOne: Sometimes, when I'm sent some designs, I request the Architect to explain how he intends to achieve some aspects including materials to use.
Am I the only one?
Because some of these designs give sleepless nights. This is the reason why the Architect's services does not end at the design stage. The Architect should be involved in all aspect of the building procurement processes. It may interest you to know that there are other additional services which the Architect should be engaged to carry out, such as EIA, Post occupancy evaluation etc. |

TheLasyBuddha: Hello,
It's exciting that you hope to pursue a rather progressive topic in your PhD. Not many recent research in the field of architecture is looking towards sustainable development at the core of the work.
In response to your first question, have you thought of your research questions for this topic? I do believe they would guide your methodology or approach. It's one thing to have a tentative topic and another thing to have a drafted proposal, which would guide how you choose to answer your research questions, collect and analyse data and so on.
To your second question, there are very few funding opportunities in Nigeria. Look abroad, my piece of advice. Your topic seem to be interesting and with a good proposal showing your intent, especially solving architectural problems relating to people with special needs, this would receive a lot attention and possibly a funding.
I hope this helps.
Best regards. . Thank you for this piece of advice sir. I have done some background work already from my M.Sc, I hope to leverage on that. Is there a possibility of going into collaborative research with guys abroad? |

We can sound "woke" and all about all children being blessing. MMotimo: Unpopular opinion (?):
These unhealthy rivalries, ego drives and need to show off are some of the major causes of the current state of our morals as a nation and it is not restricted to the people of the SE alone. I can’t speak for the north because I don’t know enough northerners to make a judgment but these mindsets permeate the whole of southern Nigeria from the Yorubas of the SW, all across our country’s southern regions. Please note the use of the word “average “ in my write up below, I’d hate to see any hasty responses that ignored that qualifier.
These “ideologies “ are one of the reasons overseas prisons, from Asia to Europe to the USA are flooded with Kayodes, Nosas, Emekas and all manner of southerners. The journey to riches at all costs with no boundaries. The average southerner desires wealth , first and foremost to prove that they have arrived. Personal utility/benefit of the riches is secondary. Part of human development is mental development. I’m old fashioned myself in a lot of ways but when it comes to finance, I allow little room for sentiments. Speaking to the SE aspirations already mentioned by several people, it’s interesting that we have a number of Igbo friends, professionals with good jobs, great incomes with the financial resources to build mansions in the village yet have no desire to do such but are content with donating money to fund infrastructure that benefit the villagers. I will admit the ones we are close with were largely born and bred in Lagos so maybe that’s the difference in thinking. It’s easier to embrace certain ideologies in adulthood if they were already instilled from birth if you were born in the region. You more or less grow up with people with the same mindsets and rub minds with them. Similar to the SW asoebi, owambe crew for whom life is “party after party.” If your social circle is filled with people of a certain mindset, chances are high that you would mirror their thinking and aspirations.
In the old days, it was possible to achieve certain inspirations without crime but in Naija of 2022 with an economy that is all but comatose at this point, a person would still be panting and sweating to build white elephant projects in a village of 1500 people or less while some other southerners just want the money so that they can throw multi million naira parties with KWAM1 and Sunny Ade on stage as they celebrate 10th, 20th, 50th death anniversaries of loved ones or so they can buy an AMG G63 they are not capable of maintaining or make it rain dorime at the clubs so they can be hailed. Is it any wonder our morals as a country is in the pits when we have high end desires that cannot be supported with economic realities? Realistically, what are the chances of the average person in these groups, in Nigeria, being able to achieve such misplaced priorities through honest labor with zero criminal acts? Again, I say average. I know there is a very tiny minority that is capable of achieving without resorting to crime.
Abroad, even if they are not into crime, they are leveraged (in debt) to their eyeballs. Credit cards are maxed out, multiple loans are being serviced, little or no savings compared to incomes earned. They even patronize pay day loan lenders that charge astronomical rates because they are living pay cheque to pay cheque. With a take home pay of USD10k or more after deductions, some cannot save USD1k a month and I’m not exaggerating. It’s called “doing pass yasef.” You no fit drink water drop cup. For some, that is all on top of working 2/3 jobs to make ends meet and complete the village white elephant project back home or fund the next owambe at Eko Hotels. Even in the abroad, they are the “house poor “ Nigerians with the biggest houses that are mortgaged to the hilt, occasionally even unable to make mortgage payments. Cars nko? Multiple leased luxury vehicles to keep up with the appearance of wealth even as they are voracious consumers of luxury brand knockoffs because they cannot afford the real thing but want to keep up appearances.
At Naija parties, they are the braggarts, always ready to make grandiose announcements that may not even be rooted in fact. Picture people like N3xt. With no prompting, they announce all these assets that they own, all these projects they are funding but they won’t say pim about their debts. Ladies and gentlemen, the koko is the net worth (assets-liabilities). That is the real wealth if you are looking to measure. Some of these people have declared person bankruptcy one or more times in the US because their debt load became uncontrollable but their people in Naija have no idea.
I’m going to touch on the swimming pool idea that has become so popular now with detached homes. I can understand pools in apartment buildings that have the population and hopefully traffic and maintenance funds (service fees) to keep them viable but these tiny, soak away sized “swimming pools “ in detached homes are the ones that baffle. Note, I’m not talking about the ones you find in homes that have plenty land to accommodate beta pools. If you cannot afford enough land to accommodate the house and a proper-sized pool, why must you build a pool that is going to end up breeding mosquitoes and drowning lizards? To start with, it takes money to maintain those pools and that is on top of the house’s maintenance. Half the time, these pools are not even built to international standards but we like to copy international ideas. The average Nigerian’s idea of relaxing has nothing to do with wearing swimming trunks or being in a pool. It’s strictly isiewu/peppered snails/nkwobi/small chops, etc with alcohol but we build a pool as a status symbol even if it ends up in disrepair within a few months. Moral Instruction. |

Charisdesigns: This have proven to be cheaper at construction stage (if done well, you won’t have issues)
But if not handled by folks with experience or professionals, maintenance overtime makes it more expensive
I will share some of my personal considerations when planning/constructing hidden roof later.

Here are other cheap common type if you don’t want pitch or gable roof. Your renderings are clean. |

obinnanwozuzu: Please which is cheaper? This roofing or the other common type of roofing?
And also which is better? The cost of maintenance is high, especially the parapet walls will be heavily affected by weather. Do a monopitch with eaves of 600mm that way you are reducing cost as well as offering protection to your external walls. |

EgunMogaji2: Out of curiosity why don’t you guys just use price per square meter? My judgement is based on historical information. Using the square meter template may not work due to varying work condition and specification. Mr. A did a foundation height of 1.5m at #3m and Mr.B wants to do the same area of foundation, height of 1m, how do you reconcile that using square meter template? It is better used for planar stuffs. |

PUIJ101: Good day everyone, please, is 1.2 million naira budget, for workmanship of the foundation of a 4 bedroom duplex, attached with a 1 bedroom self con a good price Note: Supervisor (Architect) and labourers all inclusive. . I think this is a fair bargain if he can deliver quality. you may ask for a price cut. Based on experience, my benchmark is usually a little above #1M, if there are other ancillary spaces like laundry, store, bar, more than 2verandahs, it could get close to 1.2M. So your project is actually 5bedrooms and not 4bedrooms. |

The End.
Please note that anything that we may have missed on this project was either not authorized by the sponsor or not paid for at all.
Lessons were learned, the biggest of which was managing competing constraints. The users required more but atimes the funds were not available. We found a way of balancing the approved scope of work by the sponsor and requirements by users without overshooting our budget. Stakeholders engagement is key to the success of any project, here the priests interest in the project grew as we moved on due to the level of engagement we had with him, we allowed them make certain decisions without negatively impacting our budget.
Thanks and God bless you as you go through this documentation.
