I don't want Trouble
Destroying the SIM won't save you from trouble either, since you've already registered it imputting your biodata. Report the issue to both MTN and Access bank. Make it clear that you want the alerts to stop. Make your report in writing, probably through customer care emails, so that you can keep documented proof of the complaints and their response. In a more civilised clime, someone can sue MTN for this kind of embarrassment and get good compensation for it. They should format an old number very well before reselling it as a new SIM.

When will we stop being spiteful of other ethnic groups in this country? Crime and criminals exist everywhere in the world, so far as there are human beings there.

Also, unless you focus on yourself, build yourself and become good at what you do, you cannot truly rise by bringing others down.

Lastly, nairaland is also internet. Over ninety percent of decisions are taken based on perception, whether it's the actual fact or not. When other countries embarrass us by denying us visa among other numerous embarrassments, it is because of how they perceive us. Nowadays, the major ingredient backing perception is what appears on the net and how we react to them. Similar crimes also happen all over the world, but we keep watching our dirty linen in public.

For the teens and early twenties, you will live long if you will be able to BEWARE of the following:

1. Friends,

2. Alcohol.

3. Women (if you are male)

4. Men ( if you are female)

Most senseless crimes revolve around them or are motivated by them.

Yes, the bible says you should also BEWARE of love of money, but you will not join cult, armed robbery gang or prostitution if you don't keep, depend on or reveal everything to friends. If you are able to avoid or limit alcoholic drinks, your brain will always be at alert and nobody will lead you into a way or part in which you cannot be able to turn back before it is too late. I need not talk about "BEWARE of the opposite gender". The culprit in the story of this thread killed his friend because he knew exactly where to get and sleep with women of easy virtue.

Above all, learn to pray always. You don't have to be a born again Christian before you kneel down and talk to God. God himself sees you as his child way back before you take that decision.

A concerned uncle of mine gave me the above advice when he heard that I got admitted to university. After not doing well, i.e. not meeting my own standards in 100 level performance, I remembered this advice, applied it and it worked wonders. I am still thanking that uncle years after graduating.

I hope it works for many of our youth out there.

I hope private university workers are included. Many private university workers that I know are contemplating suicide. A friend of mine that works in Paul University, Awka, has borrowed from so many people that people don't agree to lend money to him again and he confided in me that suicide is the only way out. Even though I myself am also broke, I had to give him 20% of the little that remained on me; otherwise, how could I claim to be his friend and yet do nothing when he is contemplating suicide.
Private school is private school; be it nursery, primary, secondary or university. The school is still a private school whether it is owned by a Mission ( Islamic or Christian schools owned by already handicapped religious bodies occasioned by long closure of churches and mosques ) or they are the ones owned by individual proprietors who claim the association of private school owners. I have read through the whole thread to see how a common teacher in self isolation at his or her home can easily apply for this loan and get it, but I am yet to see it. So please, someone should quote me when the good vice president makes the application method or link public.

According to you, disease incidence is increasing, but yet we should open schools so it can increase more? How can you defend that? Is it that you think COVID doesn't kill, or that if it takes only a certain number of lives, reopening would be worth it?

No, we will not stay home for five years. But we do need reasonable guidelines or assurances that we are not putting lives at risk.

I will leave you with some of the guidelines. Tell me that most secondary schools (which are criminally underfunded in the first place) in Nigeria will do #3 to #6.

1. Equip and resource schools for improved teaching and learning methods for special needs learners.
2. Provide WASH facilities including soap, hand sanitizers, and girls’ dignity kits in schools
3. Establish and adequately equip dispensaries and clinics as appropriate
4. Create adequate classrooms and learning spaces to maintain safe distancing in schools
5. Provide better ventilated classrooms and TLCs
6. Use solar power and alternative energy sources for electricity, and boreholes for water (which human being put this here?)

I repeat, we can reopen anytime, but the evidence suggests that we haven't yet reached a point where it is safe to do so. That is what the Fed Ministry of Education is saying, and for once, they got it right. Forget the pressure from private school proprietors and their teachers, like a certain clown above. When there is evidence that we can safely do so, we should reopen schools. That may be next 2 weeks, it may be next month. Before then, we shouldn't play games with lives.
Mention one market in Nigeria that fulfils all these requirements, yet the same students frequent them,

One or two schools? Do you know that there are close to 10,000 secondary schools in Nigeria? Bros, take it to the bank, you will have positive tests in at least 500 schools over the next few weeks. And for you to think a principal "worth his onions" can prevent students from infecting themselves or others shows that you are out of touch with how secondary schools in Nigeria operate. No matter how many guidelines, will you stop students from walking home together? Playing together? You may think it makes sense to just cavalierly blame principals for infections, but there is no power on earth that can stop students infecting others. That is what the Israel example shows us. You are also cavalier in implying some students should just write SSCE next year because of a stupid rush that I have already shown makes no sense. Isn't that cruel of you?

Everything you've said here is obvious to anyone who has followed this outbreak. I was was de emphasizing the kids because your initial post made it clear that you thought the main concern was about kids dying.

Edit: For your information, Israel had less than 50 cases a day (and we have much more). They reopened their schools, now see what they are saying: https://www.wsj.com/articles/israelis-fear-schools-reopened-too-soon-as-covid-19-cases-climb-11594760001

You people should stop sentimental arguments, and base decisions on FACTS, and EVIDENCE. Follow the accurate DATA wherever it leads. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is one case where the Aboki man (not my words; that's what others have been calling him) is right.
Another point of mine which you didn't grasp is that NCDC data, which you mentioned, has continued to increase in Nigeria even though schools are closed. Whether schools are opened now or not, the data will continue to increase. Your opinion that our students don't obey the rules is reflective of the general society. How many of us (adults) obey COVID19 prevention guidelines? Our children are simply copying us, but it's not too late to begin to correct them, especially by our own behavioral examples.

Now that schools are closed, how many of us (parents/guardians) ensure that the same children stay at home without going out to visit and play with friends? It seems we suddenly begin to over-emphasize the dangers of contracting the virus immediately schools are mentioned. The same students visit markets everyday and we all know the situation in our markets.

Mind you, the virus originated from a market in Wuhan, Hubei province in China, NOT from a school. So the continued increase in confirmed cases in both Nigeria (where schools are still closed) and in Israel (where schools reopened) can not be blamed on schools alone. I put it on the general behavior of the populace. Leaving sentiments out it, let us not continue to punish our schools for what is non of their fault.

Even WHO has analysed the situation and came out with a statement that COVID19 may never go away. It is up to us to devise safe ways of living with it. That is why God gave us brains. Assuming the virus stays for the next five years, I am sure you won't keep a WAEC candidate at home for that long waiting for when the virus will go away. The earlier we start thinking, the better it will be for all of us.

proffemi:
There is a major misconception in your post. You seem to assume the kids are the ones at risk here. That is not the problem. The problem is that the kids will (while remaining asymptomatic themselves) infect people in more vulnerable age groups, like their diabetic Geography teacher, or their hypertensive principal.

See why this is a Pandora's box now?

Knowing as we do with 100% confidence that there will be positive tests (because there will be sha), are you saying the SSCE for schools with positive tests should be cancelled/stopped, or should we ignore positive tests, sicks teachers and just forge ahead all in the name of rushing an SSCE for students, most of whom are trying to enter universities that will remain closed and not ready to admit them anytime soon?

My point is: I do not see why we should rush and take risks. If we had scientific data (I see no reason why we don't, with all the "researchers" in Nigeria, but that is another discussion) that predicted a safe reopening, sure. But in the absence of that, why take risks?
My point is that we should not delay the normal progression of school pupils because we are afraid of what might happen at one or two schools where the principal and staff might fail to make their students abide by the safety guidelines. Any principal or teacher who knows the worth of his onion should be able to order all students, and even parents to wear their face covering before they approach their office or staff roomc, not to talk of entering the school compound. If many students or staff test positive at such schools, it should be shut down. They then write SSCE next year and probably continue regular classes after two, three or four weeks during which disinfection procedure must have taken place.

As for who is at risk of dying of the virus; I think everybody is at risk. The older ones are at higher risk, but there are reports of people below 10 years of age who also died. So everyone should take all the necessary precautions.

Sorry, I am an academic, so forgive me for asking what gives you this confidence?Where is the evidence?

You are obviously not a teacher, or don't have kids in the age bracket we are talking about. You actually think kids in Gragra Village College will follow those silly guidelines? Did you actually go through the original guidelines?

Finally, do you honestly believe Nigerian kids and schools will be more disciplined than their Israeli counterparts? Do you know that the Israeli experiment with reopening their schools is falling apart as we speak?

You cannot be more concerned than I am; I have kids writing SSCE. But you cannot just wave your hands and tell us that everything is okay. Show us the facts, show us the evidence and show us *realistic* guidelines.
i guess your WASSCE candidate kids have been staying indoors observing all COVID19 Safety measures. If so, I congratulate you for doing a good job keeping them so. Honestly, the ones I see around my area are different, so much that I strongly opine that going back to school is safer for them during this period. Secondly, if they didn't die of COVID19 over the last few months after carelessly mixing up with people
without protection, I don't think they will suddenly die at school.

Nevertheless, a parent is free to keep his/her children at home till when he feels it is safe for them to join the rest at school. Allow those who are ready to risk it the opportunity to do so.

On Israel, their situation is truly becoming messier, but schools are still open. The authorities close schools where students test positive. We can do the same over here.

Person wey go die go die? Sorry, that is not a philosophy that any sensible government or policy maker uses. You are welcome to it as a person of course, but please do not expect or encourage any government in Nigeria to embrace such an irresponsible philosophy when it comes to the lives of citizens.
Nobody will die. Let's stop putting it into the equation. What we ask for is SAFE reopening of schools. That's all. School is better regimented than other places that have reopened so far. For instance, it is easy for school management to order all students to wear face covering before they enter the premises and they all have to obey it.

As far as COVID19 is concerned, Nigeria should not be compared to the US anymore. Take a look at the daily new infection reports over there. This is July. The virus has been here for four months, yet no dead bodies lying in the streets of Africa as was projected. Besides, the US can and has been running their schools online, even doing virtual graduation ceremonies, while most of our students are idling about.

This decision of the South West governors is quite commendable, especially where they mentioned plans to invest in Education Technology. That's what post COVID19 should be. If we had the tech before now, WASSCE exams could have been computer based and classes would have reopened online.

What dates are we looking at for reopening schools?
Many people are already confused. Don't add to the confusion.

The effort put into drafting these guidelines is quite commendable. It's no longer news that COVID19 is on earth to spend a long time. So, the earlier we started thinking of how to live and survive with it, the better for all of us. After reopening, schools where many students and staff test positive should be closed again for some time. That will make other schools' management, staff and students to enforce the guidelines if they want to avoid closure.

We’re Confused By FG’s U-Turn On WAEC – ANCOPPS

PRINCIPALS of secondary schools nationwide under the aegis of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) have also expressed surprise over Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu’s announcement on Wednesday withdrawing all the SS3 students in all the 104 Federal Government colleges nationwide from participating in the forthcoming West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) being conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

It said the association was fully represented at the education stakeholders’ meetings on Tuesday where they were all voluntarily agreed that WAEC could go ahead with its pending exam with all safety guidelines and protocols applied.

The national president of the association, Mr Anselm Izuagie, said this in an exclusive interview with Tribune Online on Thursday, noting that the sudden twist by the government on the exam is still baffling them more than 24 hours after the minister’s pronouncement.

He said both the Federal and various state government had representatives at the said meeting with the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, as the chairman.

He added, “The representatives of WAEC, National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Board for Technical Education (NABTE) and other critical stakeholders in the sector were also in attendance.

“We all reviewed and considered the safety of everyone who would be involved in the exam and promised that all hands would be on deck to ensure no lapses is recorded only for the minister to announce the contrary the following day. That is why the news is shocking to us and also confusing.

“But all the same, we ANCOPPS will meet tomorrow with the NUT to review the whole issue and take position and make it public.

Bruv this is Nigeria where nothing really works. The US is in a very bad shape concerning the pandemic so we shouldn't really compare to them. And trump is the only one really pushing for schools to reopen even though many health experts are cautioning against that. He even wants to cdc to change their guidelines sad. Now Nigeria? How are you going to reopen when those students are being exposed to corona is a hoax? How about WAEC shenanigans? School outbreaks happens, how will necessary steps be mobilised? US can risk it and open schools knowing they have the capacity to handle it(and it hasn't worked well for them).

I don't know if you've seen abuad's advert concerning reopening of their uni, tell me the remaining 200+ in the country can do half of that.
All the worries you expressed here are the reasons why Nigeria's pledge ends with "So help me God". Yout comment presupposes that the children are all at their homes right now observing all the safety measures; which is not true. Despite going out every day and mixing up with people, nobody is even testing them for COVID19 and they are still alive.

WAEC should be postponed till 2021

Other countries have postponed any educational activities till 2021

Must we copy other countries all the time? Even if we want to copy, won't we copy those that are more progressive than us?

The USA has lost more people to COVID19 than any other country in the world, yet, at the same time and day our minister of Education was talking about stopping our children from writing exams, the US president was ordering all schools to open. Mind you, we are not yet talking about opening schools, we are still discussing about allowing SS3 students write exams. An Average SS3 student is between 15 To 18 years old and should understand all COVID19 safety measures by now.

Besides, if we want to tell ourselves the whole truth, we should ask ourselves where and what are these children doing right now. In answer, many of those that can afford it attend lessons in the morning hours, where there is no physical distancing, neither do they wear face masks. In the evening, almost all of them go out to mingle with their friends, play and watch football. They should use the time to write the exam instead of wasting it.

My conclusion once again, unless we are able to do the China type of total lockdown that will be effective, it is complete waste of time holding anybody back from what they should be doing. So far, we all know how Nigerians observe COVID19 prevention guidelines. I see NCDC releasing new confirmed cases for the next three years. So, our children will continue to wait for that long?

There is a reason why Nigeria's national Pledge ends with the line:
"So help me God".
