PoliticsRe: Nigeria Ups Its Game In Perishables Air Cargo. by ujoinme(op): 11:13pm On Dec 12, 2013
13 Airports Now Cargo Terminals print
Published on June 19, 2013 by · 1 Comment
Thirteen airports in Nigeria have been designated as perishable cargo airports, authorities said on Tuesday, describing the move as a way of transforming the aviation sector into a major revenue earner for Nigeria.
The perishable cargo terminals would be located in Abuja, Akure, Calabar, Ilorin, Jalingo, Jos, Kano, Lagos, Makurdi, Minna, Owerri, Port Harcourt and Uyo airports.
“These airports which are in proximity to food baskets will be developed with international standard perishable cargo facilities to enhance their operations,” said Yakubu Dati, spokesperson at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN.
Nigeria has 22 airports operated by FAAN, four of which are functional international airports. Africa’s most populous country also has a state owned airport located in Akwa Ibom State.
In addition, there are airstrips or airfields scattered around the country, built mainly by the Nigerian Air Force and multinational oil companies.
But only few of these airports have a perishable cargo terminal like the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. The authorities said that must change.
Dati said state governments have also been encouraged to partner with the Federal Government to revive smaller airports.
He said the move is to enable them key into the over N250 billion annual air freight export market out of Africa.
“Countries like Kenya, South Africa, Benin, Cote d’ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Egypt are participating in the trading in commodities such as fruits, fresh fish, vegetables and flowers while Nigeria, which produces these produce in abundance, records zero participation.
“The strategy is therefore to create the much needed storage infrastructure in view of the large volume involved and to facilitate the evacuation of agricultural produce to domestic markets, in conformity with international standards,” he said.
The European Union (EU) is the main market for African exporters, accounting for more than 40% of total exports, followed by the US with 20%. Intra-regional trade represented only 8% of the total, with South Africa as the leading exporter to the region with 21% of the total.
In recent times, the more dynamic destinations for African products are China, with 27.5% annual average growth registered over a decade-long period and India, growing by 19.5% during the same period.
“The development of Economic Free Trade and Export Processing Zones will be targeted alongside cargo airports and afro-allied industrial clusters, based on local opportunities and the state’s competitive and comparative advantage in agriculture production,” Dati said.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) promises to develop five new international airports, and build improved cargo terminals at 12 airports across the country, as part of a bid to increase exports of perishables.

According to FAAN general manager Yakubu Dati, Nigeria needs to reduce its dependence on oil exports. Growers of products such as mangoes, peppers, tomatoes and lettuces are working with carriers to identify new export trade lanes.
Airfreight imports into Nigeria were more than four times the export total in the first half of 2012. “Cargo planes fly into the country and fly out empty,” Dati says.

West Africa has worked hard to avoid any possible repeat of the situation almost three years ago when the volcanic eruption in Iceland forced the closure of European airspace. Fruit and vegetable exporters saw their produce, normally flown to Europe’s supermarkets and caterers, lie rotting because of a lack of cold storage.

FAAN says private investors will be invited in to operate the new facilities, including temperature-controlled perishables stores, in one of Africa’s more liberalized aviation markets.

Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (Nahco Aviance), the former state-owned operator, led the way by inaugurating a new $17 million warehouse at Lagos International airport last fall. Nahco is now one of four licensed cargo handlers but still controls 75 percent of the market.

The new facility incorporates large cold rooms and freezers and a semi-automated handling system. Nahco’s chief operating officer, Norbert Bielderman, describes it as the largest warehouse of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

If you look at the CBN data posted by the op you will see DRAFT boldly printed on it! a draft is not a final document and hence not an accurate source to base your debate on.

The National bureau of statistics came up with the updated IGR from 2010 to 2012 for those who need objective information you can visit their website http://www.nigerianstat.gov.ng/ and download the authentic copy for your self.

heres a verifiable copy of the NBS IGR.

HealthRe: Rivers Has Highest HIV/AIDS Rate – FG by ujoinme: 3:20pm On Dec 10, 2013
I used to be involved with the collation of those data. The statistics is very accurate and are based on reported case of HIV positive test in each state within a survey period.

Besides the obvious that port harcourt is a major boom/industrial city with high population of migrants from other states and nations,One of the reasons that could be attributed to the high prevalence of HIV in Rivers state is the current exploit that Amaechi has scored in providing Health centres all over the state thereby increasing access to health care and access to HIV tests. You do know that HIV testing is part of normal blood screening in govt hospitals especially pregnant women in bid to prevent mother to child transmission. and the test is also carried out on other at risk groups who presents for blood work.

There is nothing political about the result and i know this for a fact. States with high rates are usually states with high level of state and federal health centres/facility where HIV testing is routine.

The message is for the govt. to intensify campaign to reduce new infections and provide treatment for those who are infected. encourage people with multiple sex partners to use protection ie condom. and educate teenagers on the dangers of unprotected sex! and families, churches and social organizations even social media (Nairaland) should join the campaign and stop leaving in denial.

The fact that your state does not rank high on prevalence rate is not ticket to go out on a binge of unprotected sex, remember that " HIV no dey show for face" the reason for rivers numbers is because people are tested, there are lots of infected people in your state and Nigeria in general running around without knowing that the have the virus.

on an individual level Get tested thats the only way you can know your status!

plaindealer: Sounds more like your ignorant and partisan opinion, at least till you support that gossip or made up accusations with credible facts which I know you can not do even to save your own life..

Obviously, they did. Didn't hey put him in office 2 x? They are yet to revolt against him even with all the rubbish the thugs and clowns in Abuja threw at him..

His only accomplishment this second term is on the pages of news papers fighting GEJ and his administration. Amaechi is a narcissist and 2015 will be his waterloo.

This is the falsehood you people peddle all over the place.

Amaechi commissioned a new Ultra Modern Waste Plant months ago

Kelsey Harrison Hospital and Dental and Mixillo Facial Clinic were started and completed during his second tenure

180 mw power plant at Afam was also completed in the same second tenure with tenure

He commissioned 250 primary schools just last year

With the above, please keep your lies to yourself...

The question is. GEJ was a governor just like Amaechi, show us one classroom he built while in office. I know you cant so don't bother..
Save your tall tales of fake timeline of project commissioning by amaechi for his new APC Frenemies who do not know where port harcourt is and do not know the real amaechi, for they are the only ones that believe his hype the rivers people know the truth about Amaechi.

The fact that he has lost focus in this second term and failed to perform his duties as a governor has not gone un noticed by the residence of rivers state and they will speak when 2015 comes along.

plaindealer: .....but staying, playing nice, keeping your mouth shut and dealing with the status quo means you have something to lose while dissenting, standing by your own principles and going your own way regardless means you have nothing to lose... Makes no sense.

It's the other way around...

btw, why are you making up dooms day prediction for his camp in 2015 after admonishing people to wait till 2015 before doing such...? Are you trying to have it both ways or this is just deception and hypocrisy on your part..?
dont make me laugh, What principles does amaechi have? you mean the principles of using the rivers state commonwealth to sponsor APC just to satisfy his ego to the detriment of the people that gave him the mandate?
do you think that that why rivers indigene gave him their mandate? He was given the mandate based on his performance in his first term, they all hoped that he will do even more on his second term as he promised, and so far as we speak he is yet to initiate or commission any project in his second term.

His only accomplishment this second term is on the pages of news papers fighting GEJ and his administration. Amaechi is a narcissist and 2015 will be his waterloo.

Orlando Owoh: Rotimi Amaechi has nothing to lose in 2015, he is a second term governor, except he is eyeing the Senate. But for your President, he should just forget it and be like the Mandela Doyin Okupe described him as.
Your pretentious naivety leaves little to the imagination. If Amaechi has nothing to loose why is he dissenting? could his dissent not be unconnected to the fact that he perceives the impending probe to his mismanagement of Rivers state commonwealth once his immunity expires? Is this not why he is fighting GEJ cos he knows that Wike is ratting on him on all the corrupt deals he made while they were together?

Amaechi knows he is going down thats why he is forming alliance with APC to sink PDP so he can escape unscathe. for this i wish him and his new Gang luck in 2015.

If his camp fails in 2015 his end will be worse than Ibori.
PoliticsRe: Importers Urge FG To Make Onitsha Port Cargo Destination by ujoinme:
KenGali: My first Question is have you ever visited Onitsha?
How did you know that the National double lane express road ways I mentioned are not wide enough for containers

Second question is did you read my post. Did you hear the words ship to ship transfers?

Third Question what in the world is the connection between a cargo airport and a shipping port, one can do without the order.

Do a proper study before making your conclusions.
.

If you cant see the connection btw the bolded with regards to an inland port, then its needless having this conversation with you. The cost of setting up an STS is akin to the cost of a deep seaport and the nigerian customs/port authority will not build anything that is not under their jurisdiction since they will not be able to tax it/regulate its activity.
And for your information i am rooting for the onitsha port to work and all the other port in the country to be functional for that's the key for an economic growth in the country. But i am realistic with the situations on ground.Bye
PoliticsRe: Importers Urge FG To Make Onitsha Port Cargo Destination by ujoinme: 8:16pm On Dec 08, 2013
KenGali: Ah you really sure you understand what we are talking about?
Onitsha port is looking to recieve cargo, not export.
If your question is about where that cargo will come forum,
The answer is the Igbo business communities in Germany, China, Singapore for start.

If you want to count infrastructure, Onitsha is linked to
I domestic airport at Asaba
1 international Airport at Enugu
At least 3 interstate roads (Enugu, Owerri, Aba/Ph)
No rail yet, but these ones are good for a start

Last but not least is that
Cargo is provided by businesses
That's why a lot of the ports you mentioned are not doing too well. apart from Draft. PH Ports have upto 8ft to 10 ft draft, however they are moser utilised by the oil industry than for commerce.

Onitsha has an abundant supply of businesses with Cargo needs. With other located in places like Kano and Maiduguri being very willing to keep their stock storage in their home states considering the state of insecurity in Nigeria.

I case you are missing the points, inland ports usually take of cargoes direct
Y from mother vessels unto barges for onward transportation. This can be done in the middle of the ocean, and does not need a port. Infact ship to ship transfers or lightering go on in west African waters all the time.
Why will a business man want to delay his good twice in the Nigerian port system. Any ship heading to port will need to clear with customs, etc, and wait its turn. But if Onitsha port authority operates it's own barge service, all those be autocratic processes will take place in Onitsha in the name of the mother vessels bill and that of the barge. A comprehend?
like i said its a silly plan with no freight links to the inland port of onitsha there are no good road linking the ports, no rail, and 2 airport with runways that are not built to receive jumbo planes that are used for optimal cargo transportation.

At the present situation surrounding the onitsha inland port the your plans cannot work except you are planning mediocre service utilization of the port.

until the basic infrastructures that i had listed ie (Roads wide enough for container transport, rail, cargo friendly airport and or deep seaport/depth non deficient seaport) earlier are upgraded the viability of that the onitsha port will remain questionable.
PoliticsRe: Importers Urge FG To Make Onitsha Port Cargo Destination by ujoinme:
KenGali: Well well, without prejudice to the Ibaka Sea Port,
You are underestimating River ports.
Check out the Port of St Louis on the Mississipi. It ranks 24 out of 149 in the US with annual tonnage of about 30million tons.
http://www.rita.dot.gov/bts/sites/rita.dot.gov.bts/files/publications/national_transportation_statistics/html/table_01_57.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ports_in_the_United_States

Lagos two ports handled 19 and 16million tons per annum at last report.
You probably thought inland ports depend on ocean going vessels. Sea picture below for how they handle different types of goods
okay lets have this discussion. if you can answer this question
(1) what will be your proposed source of cargo supply to the onitsha port?
in light of the fact that your St louis port that you used as an example is linked or Served by 6 Class One railroads, 7 Interstates, 2 international airports?

Do you propose cargo supply from non existence railway or the almost non existent road network linking the over extended lagos port, onne, calabar or delta under utilized ports? which are all under utilized because of depth limitation for large sea going vessel to berth?

you need supply my friend and that can only come from deep sea ports with no depth limitation to enable large vessels to berth and the lekki deep seaport under construction or the proposed ibaka seaport is the answer, and from there cargoes can be floated in barges as you said to onitsha port. and all the other inland ports in the country for them to be viable.

my advise google points of origination of cargoes for the St louis port in the US.

Unfortunately, SW votes alone is more than enough to neutralise whatever manipulation the creek people and those from SE villages do. Tell me how GEJ will rig in the north - he may not even be able to campaign there.
like i said 2015 will be the judgement day where the politics of Amaechi with his gang of new friends and the politics of jonathan will be put to trial in the court of nigeria public opinion to decide. So my advice is to hold your breath till then.

The only proof of amaechi being ahead of jonathan will be in 2015, If amaechi becomes president or vice president of Nigeria, or his new party is able to out rig PDP from power then can we say he was a step ahead of the president. For now even when Amaechi wins some battles he is definitely loosing the war!

Besides the FG currently got loans from china to build four brand new terminals in the country of which portharcourt airport is a beneficiary so please hold your breath more is happening currently in this airport interms of upgrades and renovation than at anytime since its inception.

Learn to be appreciative and Objective dont let politics becloud your sense of reasoning!
PoliticsRe: Importers Urge FG To Make Onitsha Port Cargo Destination by ujoinme: 4:29pm On Dec 08, 2013
kettykin: The onitsha port should accommodate large barges that can be pulled by trawlers which can carry hundreds of containers, this would be followed by a drastic crash in the price of goods because of cheaper warehousing, cost of labour and cost of doing business in onitsha as compared to lagos, this would also speed up the migration of igbo out of lagos back to the east and the De congestion of lagos.
The maritime economy of Nigeria is about 25% of the economy and Onitsha must do everything possible to maximise its maritime endowment
onitsha can then be linked through railway to Awka, Nnewi, Enugu, Ebonyi
And to Orlu, Owerri, aba and port Harcourt and Uyo and ibaka
Bloody stupid idea. Onitsha is a riverport and hence has its limit to the kind of vessel that can berth there. it is practically impossible to make it a shipping hub. it can be dredged to depths that can optimally allow it to service onitsha and its environs.

If you are looking for a shipping hub to service all minor ports in the former eastern region then a deep sea port in Ibaka is the answer.

This press utilizes the best printing technology in the world currently, it will not only print quality newspapers, for the state news corporation but for other media and print houses around, and it will provide good avenue for employment and training for youths who are interested in that trade.

My recommendation is that the state media houses( AKBC-Radio and TV, Pioneer newspaper) should have an online platform which is the current trend globally so people can access local akwa ibom news from anywhere in the world.
