bankyh1905: I'm not sure. But given the large of people who have had to write several times 'cos of that component, I find it hard to believe that Nigerians are just poor in writing. And I'm beginning to believe in the conspiracy theory that people fail because IELTS is a revenue-spinning tool. The conspiracy is not true. In truth, Nigerians are poor in writing. What we give is what we get. I believe we can pin it on the fact that most test takers (generations trained on the Nigerian Policy of Education 2014 and earlier) never had creative writing as a component in their English studies. Even with English as a national language, Nigerians relate with English as a Second Language. Anybody with English as a First Language can spot it in our writing and speaking. If you pick any material used in training ESL pupils - Spanish and French students qualify as such - you'll see a lot of gaps in your knowledge of English. This is my perspective as a 3-year teacher of the British curriculum. I wrote IELTS twice only. Academic in 2017 and General Training this year, LRWS 9,8,7.5,7 and 9,9,8,7.5 respectively. While people say there are hacks/templates for the exam, during my practice with IELTS study materials, I didn't see them. I simply saw it for what it was, an English test that a student with English as a First Language.would have no hassles attempting. |

HappyPagan: The morning parade is compulsory. How they snuck worship sessions into it is something I'd never understand. Had a problem with it as well. I simply stood there and tried to amuse myself with all the balderdash. My hostel though was another story. I was well accepted by my roommates and they seemed to enjoy arguing with me too. I'm still friends with some of them till date. One highlight was when a traditionalist in the hostel sought me out and told me I was doing a great job, that it was a pleasure to meet me...so forth. I found out he's been bashing "imported" religions around camp too. He had a profound hatred for Christianity that I envied. Lol. |
Romance › Re: Once You Say You Love Me, You Already Owe Me Money - Nigerian Ladies Clash by Ultimus: 6:44am On Apr 12, 2019 |
TimiRume: I kind of agree with Nneka even though she is a bit extreme with her views, but then those are not really her views, they are a natural order of relationship between men and women. Men are wired to impress women with proceeds from their labouring, while women try to win men with their looks.
Brown Sugar's views are problematic. First, if the man is willing to spend then you can't fault the woman. Second, women are also put under pressure to look good, neat and cheerful all the time even when there are factors that could make them not keep up. Third, men also feel entitled to pretty or classy girlfriends so for women who fall short in this area, they face same problems broke men face...lack of choice. Fourth, the world would be a mess if her approach to relationships is adopted.
Masculinity and femininity are two fragile and precious qualities we cannot afford to lose in this so called modern world. Your assumption that Nneka's feminity is the optimal one is what I find problematic. The ladies arguing can coexist in this world with each finding their like for like. That a lot of men already disagree with Nneka is a very loud point that shouldn't be ignored. |

I really wonder why they require an English proficiency test from us Nigerians. It's what's going to delay my application. I don't know too. But internationally, we are still regarded as EAL (English as additional language) students, even though our national language is English. It is best to just submit the language proficiency test report given the circumstances. Some programmes even allocate marks for the English test while some might waive it upon providing a letter from your alma mata that you were taught in English. I suggest you mail them and find out possible alternatives for the English test. |
