If that Scientist has a fellowship like FRCPATH in in the UK which is also open to Medical Scientist in the UK or (MLS) FASCP in the USA she has every right to introduce herself as a pathologist. Pathology is a study also open to medical scientist it is not a title.
There are physician-pathologists and Scientist-pathologists. If she has the qualifications, she has right to introduce herself as such.

The former Registrar of MLSCN Prof. Emeribe is a Scientist and a holder of FRCPATH in Haematology which is a field of pathology. You cant win him in court if you sue him for using a qualification he has properly earned.

Prof. Ngokere is a reputable Medical Scientist-
histopathologist. Many of your senior colleagues went through him during training. Google up his numerous publications in international journals.

In UK Gary Moore is a consultant Biomedical Scientist, and a reputable haematologist (which is a field of pathology). There are many of them there.

There are many Nigerian medical scientists who are fellows in the UK Royal college of pathology (FRCPATH). They are haematologists, Chemical pathologists, histopathologists, Medical microbiologists, which are all fields of pathology.

The UK Royal college of pathology and US ASCP are not in Nigeria where ego-conscious physicians who feel intimidated by knowledgeable Scientists have bastardized the system.

Good a thing Nigerians have passed the National postgraduate college of medical lab science (NAPCMLS) bill into law.

A Medical Doctor who decides to become a primary school teacher has no business complaining he spent donkey years in school, since his donkey years has nothing to do with that Job. Same way if a Scientist confines his role to bench work he shouldn't be asking for the same pay as a neurosurgeon because he has MLSD added to his portfolio. Same trend with nurses agitating for DNSC, I wonder which private firm will employ a Doctorate nurse to make their bed and give medications. U will agree with me that BSC nurses and RNs have no difference. In fact when they go abroad there is no special treatment. They write the same exams and enter the same per hour entry pay scale.

U mentioned MLS becoming a Neurologist but blamed it on Autocorrect, the same way u said MLS can now be pathologist. I have never said MLS job is restricted to the bench, however, several Scientist have refused to explore other areas but hold on the bench as their do or die. The foundation of the MLS post graduate college is wrong as it was designed to give the Lab scientists a negotiating edge in CIVIL SERVICE and not based on the need for specialists in that field. Now come to think of it. Will a post graduate degree lab scientist be employed by a private institution and if yes to do what exactly?
Well time will tell, if the MLS post graduate degree technologist would be the one to start managing Leukemia and be seeing Reed Sternberg cells?

Patients intakes in hospitals like LUTH increased drastically since the resumption of strike by Johesu. What do you have to say to this?

phase1:
Gram staining and leishman staining are the basics of the fundamentals. Even a second semester 200 Level Scientist in training will prepare stained slides perfectly and tell you the working principles of stains even from Gram stains in Micro to Periodic acid Schiff in Histo. Yet I have seen resident physcians who are entirely cluesless about these procedures and there principles when they come to the laboratory. Yes many of them, not HOs but residents but they want to head the lab. How many of your physicians can prepare primers in molecular-based testing procedures? How many even knows the principle of Serum antibiotic assay by HPLC methodology?

Every Medical Scientist who knows his worth knows the difference, importance and peculiarity of Endocervical swab (ECS) and High vaginal swab ( HVS). They also know that Hematoxylin and Eosin staining is better for nucleus studies while Papanicolau staining will better reveal cytoplasmic properties of a pap smear for C-ca screening in the histo lab.

If you work in an organized health institution and get a ridiculous result you should take it up and seek redress by finding out the person who ran the investigation, go to the person's superior like the Chief Scientist or Principal Scientist. Investigations will be lauched and will help rid the labs of quacks and fake charlatans which your physician MDs employ in order to cut cost.

I did it during internship when an empty-headed arrogant physician brought me an EUCR sample during call in Fluoride oxalate bottle and expected me to produce results 'urgently' and sign out. I simple tossed the sample into trash bin, filled an incident report in incident register, filed recollection form served it to him and sent him back to the ward. He was too empty-headed and arrogant to be lectured so I saved my strenght and shut the lab door as he protested.

Lastly, there is no privilege being abused. All professions will continue to enjoy their autonomy regardless of what you think as obtained abroad.
Most of the succesful private lab I know make less than 17% of the income from physician's request. There are walking patients, Direct consumer requested tests and patient with pre-existing conditions who go to labs for follow ups, even other health professionals like pharmacists and nurses can educate patients to request tests like liver function tests and Eucr before taking some drugs that are contra-indicated in Liver or renal disease.

A private genetic testing lab in the US (not owned by physicians) 23andMe offer direct access testing for Genetic predisposition to diseases in the US to the global community without physician's request. How can they go bankrupt when they don't depend on you? The Scientists and technicians there don't need you.

Global healthcare is shifting from 'physician-centred' to 'patient/client-centred'. You either shape in or ship out.

By right it is the hematologist and gastroenterologists that are supposed to handle those issues closing. The houseofficer & registers r only to carry out orders n go on ward rounds with d consultant. You would see how many johesuites could rot in prison for claiming to be physicians.

If at all those scenarios are true , atleast the intervention was aimed properly.

One of the factors behind late presentation are idiots claiming to be doctors. Back then when I was doing my M2 posting in neurology unit I remember a 12 yr old girl was brought in. The girl was treated by a pharamcist for 5 weeks for persistent malaria instead of meningitis just because he was able to elicit headache and fever being a quack claiming to be a doctor, he couldn't elicit kernigs and brudzinki's sign of meningitis and only referred the parents to the hospital after d girl has develop cranial nerve 8 palsy(sensorineural deafness). Neurologists are not magicians... use of corticosteriods has limits to wic it can remedy the situation..the girl has to go deaf for life....when they get home they will spread falsehood that Nigerian doctors are duns while actually d fault is traceable to the d idiot that calls himself pharmacist. Just a course of ceftriaxone 2g iv 2x/d for 12 days could have prevented the damage. Even the best doctor in d world cant reverse that damage.
Do u ever reason why UK health sector is perfect? The government pays everything. Health checkups are free. The patient goes freely to the hospital to see a 'doctor' not a quack claiming doctor.

A medlab lab scientist claims to be equivalent in knowledge with a physician but forgets that diagnosis of most lifethreatening conditions are made on clinical grounds ,laboratory tests being only confirmatory. Ofcourse a physician doesn't need laboratory results to diagnose Rheumatoid fever,meningitis, cerebrovascular insult,Congestive cardiac failure,Infective Endocarditis, passive congestion of liver, testicular torsion, and etc. Infact 90% of diagnosis in neurology are made accurately on clinical grounds alone.
Johesuites don't know the kind of favour they are abusing. The day a medical doctor becomes president of Nigeria that is the day that the 1:3 relativity obtainable in uk will be restored and the place of a medical doctor in the health sector not rivalled by idiots.

Despite over 44days of rest by the JOHESU members, they resumed yesterday with the most unprofessional undertone ever. While many strolled into work lackadaisically, others took their time to haul insults at clients seeking for direction. Doctors where not spared as they received their fair share of hostility from these support staff.

Johesu is a group of amorphous workers tagged Joint health sector Union, they include all workers in the hospital including cleaners, drivers, Engineers, accountants , except Doctors. The group is antiDoctor and was set up to create a rather hostile environment in the Nigeria hospital and has so far kept to that aim. The unholy union had held the Country to ransome for nearly 2months until being issued sack threats by the government. Other ways the Union seeks to crumble the health sector is by lobbying players in the NUC and government to grant all ancillary courses undergraduate Doctorate so as to tussle with Medical Doctors for leadership and pay equality, despite having different condition of service and professional rating.

It is now or never that the nation, stakeholders and government will rise up to tame this monster they have condoned for almost a decade.

You are a bloody lying loafer. A colleague currently working in Baltimore, Maryland registered and wrote his ASCPi to practice as a Medical laboratory Scientist while here in Nigeria.
Another friend recently migrated to Australia after writting and passing the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) exams as an Internationally trained Medical Scientist. Infact he moved with his family. But many physician travel from nigeria but go over there to seek pharmacy assistants and phlebotomists job to keep body and soul together while they struggle to write and pass exams.

Or better still, share johesu salary amongst doctors and see the wonders they can do. It will even be a cheaper option, even if it's 70% of johesu salary. For example, if johesu salary is supposed to be N10m, tell the doctors to do their work and this N10M will be shared amongst them. The hospital will run at 150%.
Pathologists will takeover the lab.
200/300l medical students will takeover nurses.
100l medical students will takeover the pharmacists. (even wassce holder can takeover).
If traditional practitioners are doing physiotherapist work, then doctors can do it as well.

Cleaners and gatemen can be employed on contract. Even patient relatives will be glad to volunteer

You think your health care management is in the hands of the doctors alone?
Do you research well, almost all the diagnosis made by the doctors must be confirm by the results from the medical laboratory scientist, all else they want to do a guess work on you. Some of the laboratory results disagree with their early dagnosis. Same with the pharmacist, they sometimes lectures the doctors on the best drugs to give to patients.
All these are for the benefit of the patients.
As you can see, all are interdependent.

Do you know the difference between a medical laboratory scientist and laboratory technician?
Medical laboratory scientist spend 5years to obtain BMLS, 1 year for internship and 1year for Nysc. Doctors spend 1 year more. Should that amount to #70 to 80000 Naira salary difference?
What Johesu is asking for is for the salary gap to reduce to like 25k to 30k. Is that too much?
