Dede1: Is Saul also among the prophets? You are worse than intellectual midget since both you and JTF could not differentiate between the apparatus for distillation of Ogogoro or Akamere or Ekpeteshi or Sapele water and that used to refining crude oil. If there were illegal refineries in the creeks of southern Nigeria, why did JTF fail to show the pictures of such structures while going public? Well said brother. |

@chucks ndudi, I am not promoting criminal activities but you can't have technology unless you do something similar to what those guys are doing. An undeveloped people MUST steal technology and use it illegally before it is standardized. Destryoying those refineries was stupid.
The government has no programme in place to encourage small refineries like theirs. You gotta pay thru your nose to obtain licence in addition to "settling" many lords at the nnpc. |

ndu_chucks: How can you forget about the bunkering criminals and exploiters of youths when the topic at hand is about illegal refineries? Helping the marginalized youths of the area and in fact the whole country is a different issue entirely.
Why is it difficult for you people to accept that these "refinery operators" are criminals? Would it be because they are from your tribe or region? You have just proven that you know nothing about technological empowerment. Nobody will legally transfer to you a technology that he uses to hold you magha. If you must stop beign a magha then you gotta steal the technology and some of his customers learn from Japan and China |

Beaf: The refineries are 100% locally made. They differ widely in complexity, some are incredidibly crude and add to the damage to the environment; others are highly sophisticated (some manned by unemployed chemical engineers and other professionals) and need to be regulated by govt, instead of being destroyed.
These boys have shown that refining fuel isn't rocket science and we can seize a great percentage of our oil industry. But, as usual, the FG will never believe Nigerians are capable until the day they start seeing illegal oil wells .
We need true federalism, so that the ND can control its destiny and harness Nigerian talent. You don't know how happy this makes me?Waohhh ! We are getting there. |

I agree that people should stop random screwing but inventing false stories to support such will in the long run make people to reject the warning altogether. That's what's happening in religion these days. |

phuck_NL: Simply solution = Federal govt should lay its hands off power completely. Let companies generate power and decide who they want to supply to. Let retail distributors buy their own transformers and distribution cables then determine who they want to service. If this is done, we will have uninterrupted power in 2yrs time. Good thinking bro. But the engineering aspect of power consists of 1 Generation , 2 Transmission 3 Distribution 1 Generation ---- Many companies can do this 2 Transmission --- Also called National Grid is usually centralized. Each company can not have its own transmission channel. 3. Distribution ---- Whether you choose underground cables or overhead wires, only one company can supply power to an area. Multiple companies mean too many poles and wires since we are mainly using overhead aluminium wires in naija. I think a more technically feasible solution (of course its related to your proposal) is to have state grids instead of national grid. Each state decides how it generates electricity for its inhabitants.A single Transmission and Distribution company (may still be state govt owned) but many Generation companies can pump their generated power into the state grid. |

Afam: When all they do is collect or solicit money from the banks to give them awards while keeping the difference as profit what do you expect.
I am beginning to see a similar thing in the web industry where some companies organize and give awards to some IT companies even when the organizers don't know A from B.
With time, mediocrity and shameless "money for hand back for ground" ways of doing business will give way.

Illegal refineries are detrimental to the nations short term economic development but may be beneficial to the nation's long term technological and hence economic development only if those refineries are locally fabricated by Nigerians.
Illegal refineries get illegal crude oil, refine and sell mainly to outside Nigeria in the international black market without paying any tax to Nigeria. That is why it will not help our economy right now.It will only enrich the few people directly involved and mind you the must keep their business hush hush.
However, if our people actually made those refineries and not some dubious Asians then we need to encourage them more and we may very well be on our way to localizing the technology of refineries. |

Brothers, Until we learn to analyze things properly before accepting or believing, the country will not achieve anything meaningful not only in electricity but in all aspects of our national development.
As we are all aware,we have 24 hours in a day. I believe a serious government will not be talking about 6,000 Mega Watts when the lay man who voted does not understand what 1 megawatt means. Rather, they will say something like "Right now we have an average of 5 hours of electricity supply daily and we are promising to achieve 8 hours by December 2009". Like that, it will be easy for anybody to monitor the progress and not wait till deadline before realizing that yaraduas 6,000MW magic generator won't happen.
By the way if i may ask. How many hours a daily electricity are we suppose to expect from 6,000MW? |
