A whole GSK employs ionly 290 people? doesnt that show that they dont have much of an impact in the economy? Like Unilever a few weeks ago, the truth is much of their business has been taken over by domestic companies. In the case of GSK, much of their medicines are out of patent. Every dick and harry is manufacturing pain killers and generic anti-biotics, we see their adverts all the time on youtube or tv. people are complaining that Augmentin has gone up but Augmentin is merely a brand name for amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium, there are cheaper generic Amoxicilin in the market because they are out of patent. thats why they are leaving. they do not have enough drugs still under patent.

The way pharmaceutical companies work is this: you do research and develop a medicine. youare granted a patent which may last 10, 20 25 years etc. During that period, the medicine may cost you N100 to produce but you can sell it for N10,000 to recover your r&d costs. Once your patent is over any tom dick and harry can manufacture the same product and sell it for N100 and sell it for N200. Nobody is going to see the same product for N200 and pay N10,000 simply because it is manufactured by GSK. Thats the problem with GSK, not that the Nigerian economy is bad.

The departure of these companies is not neccesarily a statement on the state of Nigeria but more a statement of the inability of these companies to compete with cheaper local manufacturers.
