Nigeria, like many other countries is well known for flamboyant and wealthy politicians who are typically found of appearing less than they are actually worth in public. But who are the richest politicians in Nigeria?

This is an inevitable question for someone who follows the country’s political trends. So without wasting much of your time, here are the top 10 richest politicians in Nigeria in no particular order whatsoever.

1. Ibrahim Babangida “IBB” as he’s popularly called is believed by many to be the richest politician in the country. He was born August 17, 1941 in Minna, Niger State and was popular as a very strict and tactical military man. He annulled the June 12 Chief MKO Abiola election in 1991 and he’s reported to own one of the most expensive houses in Africa – a multi billion dollar mansion in Niger state. He’s reportedly worth around $50 Billion

2. Olusegun Obasanjo He’s popularly known as “OBJ” or “Baba”. He hails from Ogun state and he’s one of the most successful politicians in Nigeria.

He was Nigeria’s first citizen first between February 1976 to September 1979 (during the military regime) and between May 1999 to May 2007 (during the democratic period). Baba owns the gigantic Otta Farms and has various other investments. He’s reported to be worth $1.6 Billion.

3. Rochas Okorocha Rochas Okorocha hails from Imo state. He was born on 22 September 1962 and he’s a multi-billionaire who is said to be worth much more than he portrays. He assumed the Imo state governorship office in 2011 and was re-elected in the 2015 elections. He owns ‘Rochas Motors’ and a thriving real estate firm. He’s reportedly worth $1.5Billion.

4. Ben Murray-Bruce He currently represents Bayelsa East constituency in the house of senate (began May 2015). He’s considered the most social politician in Nigeria. He was born on born 18 February 1956 and he’s known for his company “The Silverbird Group”. He’s a very prolific entrepreneur and a motivational speaker. He’s reportedly worth around $715 million.

5. Atiku Abubakar Atiku is arguably Nigeria’s most popular vice president. He was Obasanjo’s vice from May 1999 – May 2007. He started out in the real estate business while he was yet a customs officer and he has a logistics company. He founded American University of Nigeria (AUN) in 2005. He’s reportedly worth $1.4 Billion.

6. Bola Tinubu Bola Ahmed Tinubu is presently the most successful Lagos state politician. Jagaban as he’s popularly called was born on 29 March 1952 in the city of Lagos. He was a senator till late 1993, and he was the Lagos state governor from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He’s an APC pillar who’s reportedly worth $1.5 billion.

7. Dino Melaye Melaye is a senator representing Kogi east. He has held nothing less than 5 offices in different political levels in Nigeria. He earned the name “Mr Fix it” for his rants about how poorly Nigerian politics is being run. He has a fleet of cars and motorcycles and is reportedly worth about $802 million.

8. Ifeanyi Ubah Ifeanyi made his first million at the age of 19. His investments include a spare part export company, a real estate company, a transport company, an oil & gas company,and a football team. It is believed to be only a matter of time before he assumes office as the governor of Anambra state. His net worth stands at $1.7 billion.

9. Rotimi Amaechi Rotimi Amaechi was born on 27 May 1965. He was the Rivers State governor for two terms from May 2007 to May 2015. He is an outspoken politician and the present minister of transportation. He is reportedly worth $780 million.

10. Adamu Mu’Azu He was governor of Bauchi state from May1999 – May 2007 and he was at the centre of a lot of controversies especially at the second term of his governorship career. He’s one of those politicians whose net worth can’t be specifically stated but he’s reportedly worth at least $895 million.

Jollof rice

Suya
Suya is widely considered to be a specialty of the Hausa people of northern Nigeria and Niger. The key to excellent suya is the spice mix called yaji. It is steeped in before grilling, and the Mallam will never share their recipes. The joy of suya is finding the best spots in your state.

Zobo
It’s tangy and sweet and inherently customizable. You can add fruits of your choice, like a non-alcoholic Pimm, cloves, sparkling water or lemonade, and even chili. On a hot day, there’s nothing like a tall glass of zobo.

Moin moin
It is made of peeled Nigerian brown beansground together with onions, bell pepper, palm oil and spices, and steamed in banana leaves or other vessels. You can add any combination of extra bits to it, likeflaked fish, slices of hard boiled eggs, ground beef. It is literally up to you.

3. Grate the carrots and chop the cabbage.

4. Peel the potatoes and boil them with the eggs.

5. Dice the boiled potatoes and slice the boiled eggs with an egg slicer.

6. Peel, remove the seeds from the cucumber and shred to thin stripes.

7. Remove the seeds from the tomatoes and cut into small pieces.

8. Open the five beans and sweet corn can and sieve off the water; Empty in separate bowls.

9. Empty your contents into a big salad bowl. Form your salad layer by starting with red cabbage and lettuce at the bottom, some carrot slices five beans, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices and finally, sweet corn.

10. Add your egg slices on the top of it to make it more appealing.

11. Get a cling film to cover the salad and put in the fridge (Not freezer).

Notes
• Don’t add the Salad cream just yet until you’re ready to serve it or it would go bad faster.

Some months ago, the Federal government of Nigeria imposed Stamp Duty of N50 on Nigerians. The imposition was made via the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to the regulations of the stamp duty, any Nigerian receiving money into his account will have to part way with up to N50 on every deposit he receives into his account.

The money is to be paid by any Nigerian that receives any money into his account and it does not matter the method via which such a deposit is made. If the person is receiving the money via cheque, cash or electronic transfer, the N50 will still be deducted.
The money is actually going into the purse of the federal government of Nigeria.

The law that guides the deduction of stamp duty of N50 was enacted in 2009, but was not implemented until very recently.

This is a way of making Nigerians to contribute to the federation account. It is a method used by the federal government to raise funds for financing the budget via another means since the price of crude oil has fallen greatly over the years and this had reduced how much Nigeria as a country is able to generate on monthly basis

Nigeria depends mostly on oil for her income. Very little is generated from other sources. The Stamp Duty idea is a way of diversifying Nigeria’s economy and generating income for the federal government though another means.

It only happens that Nigerians are the ones that are bearing the brunt. The idea of stamp duty does not seem to be bad in the least. However, the question is: will the money be spent as it should be spent?

If not, such a marriage will not be counted as valid by the Nigerian family law.

Section 3(1)(c) of the Matrimonial Causes Act provides that “A marriage will be declared as void if such marriage is not a valid marriage under the law of the particular place or location or country where the marriage had taken place, especially by reason of failure of the husband and wife to comply with all the requirements of the law in that particular country. With respect to the form of solemnization of marriages”

• Divorces & annulment
The Nigerian family law gives recognition to marriage dissolution decree or nullity if it is made in accordance to the law of a foreign country with respect to that under section 81 (2-9) of the Matrimonial Causes Act.

If a marriage had been dissolved in a foreign country, it is recognized as dissolved in Nigeria too, provided the dissolution was done in line with the guidelines of the foreign country.

• Grounds for divorce
The only ground for divorce under the Nigerian law is if the marriage has completely broken down and it is not retrievable. The petitioner must make case to satisfy the court of law that there is lack of consummation in the marriage, and that there is case of adultery and the fact that the petitioner finds it very intolerable to live together with the respondent.

Other grounds for divorce are highlighted below
° The other party to the marriage has been away from the petitioner for a given period of time and therefore provides reasonable ground for the presumption that he or she is dead.

° The other party to the said marriage, for the minimum period of 1 year, has failed to comply with a decree of conjugal right and restitution.

° The parties involved in the marriage have been living separately for a continuous period lasting for at least three years before the petitioner filed the petition.

° The parties to the marriage have lived apart for at least two years continuously after the petition has been filed and there is no objection to the divorce on the part of the respondent.

Once marriage breaks down, the court has the power to settle property or allocate financial resources at the instance and also for the benefit of the parties and the children produced in the marriage.
