Hmmmn, a kumbaya thread. I can live with this. I'm just gonna name my favourite posters. Not my favourite arguers but those whose posts actually mean something. KAG. I only talked with her/him/it for a moment before he/she/it disappeared, but there's a grand scientific/philosophical mind behind the moniker Yup, you gotta love JeSoul just because she is Jesoul. I like MyJoe. Never condemning of any opinion even if it is 180degrees from his. PastorAIO. I think possibly my favourite because his posts have no leanings towards any particular religion. Which is how I like things. Mad_Max. Sigh. Plaetton. Late comer but boy, did he make an impression back then. DeepSight. If this man is not on nairaland, tumbleweeds and cobwebs would be more plentiful than posters here. He keeps the place ticking. 90% of the good threads are his. Some excellent posters I didn't choose because they usually use 500 words to make a point you can make with 47 words. |
Philosophy is an exercise, the most useful of all (to me anyways) which come in the form of mathematical equations. I'm not quite sure what side of the fence PastorAIO and Erelu are but I think any real scientist (the ones that break new grounds and not the ones that just regurgitate what is already discovered) should by default be a philosopher. Mainstream philosophy is like scientific hypothesis. One needs critical thought to be able to visualise what cannot be experimented until such a time as we have the adequate technology. The statement, 'Matter can neither be created nor destroyed' by Dalton I think is a philosophical statement. It was sound until it was disproved, or modified, as it were. Basically philosophy in practical things is a prerequisite for scientific progress. As for religion, it is chaos. I don't think philosophy can work where you have any form of religious basis. It MUST start from scratch. But the bottomline is that we are human and the world no matter how exact we try to be is probably still some kind of illusion. Who knows if 1 + 1 + 1 can really be 1? Who knows |
Er, loading..........................................we have good proverbs |
You're the one who has accepted that magic exists. Besides, any atheist can argue that he simply does not believe in God and say he believes there are supernatural occurrences. This is not a very good argument but it suffices to refute what you're saying. I don't how you came to believe it is generally accepted that there is real magic, black or white. That's just your belief along with a multitude of others and not atheists. If someone claims to be atheist but it not displaying atheistic beliefs and characteristics, that's his problem and not the problem of atheism. I'm not an atheist by the way. But I have no problems with them |
^^^ Just write a book already, Sir. Where's your favourite |
Never Ending Story Jumanji These two were the most imaginative films I saw as a child. The rest were cartoons |
Lol. Double negatives. Sorry. You made it sound like you couldn't find what you were looking for. I have tons upon tons of oldies. Unfortunately I'm not where you can reach me. I'm glad our kind is not dead though. |
Let's just say God will find himself in a very awkward position |
I have just one question. Why is it that all these holy books can never ever speak in clear terms? Why must everything be in parables? Why can't it be said exactly what the hell hell is? Now everyone has a definition. I don't think God would go around beating about the bush if his true aim is to guide us. Next thing you hear is the holy spirit has to touch you for you to understand some things. Is it my fault that the holy spirit keeps skipping me and touching others? |
My old self would have proclaimed that everyone has a conscience. But I've seen evidence that the human heart is probably one of the darkest places imaginable. I do not think everybody has a conscience. Some do and will never ignore it. Some will put it aside for something else which they believe is a stronger cause or a stronger greed, as the case may be. But some people simply are devoid of that thing which I think really makes us human. |
The question is for lack of a better word....not very smart. It's like asking what does a Muslim think of Thor. Is Magic some kinda irrefutable truth? Everybody knows magic tricks are just that, TRICKS. 'Real magic' is just science that is not yet understood. |
Lol. Whether you like it or not, you'll argue with atheists. They're continually flabbergasted by the madness or religion so they can't help themselves. You can't help yourself either cuz your holy anger won't let you ignore their 'blasphemy'. I read a funny bit about atheists: the first rule about atheist club is never stop talking about atheist club! |
^^^ Truth. Religion the way I understand is just a code by which you live by. Whether it be foisted upon you or invented by you is not relevant. We all have our religions. What Mr. Oyedepo is just trying to say is that an atheist is of no use to him since he won't contribute towards financing private jets and the likes |
Obama is a politician. He's in a position over many people. What is wrong with you? |
I warmed up to Daniel Craig with a lotta resistance. Now he's my favourite. No yeye gadgets. More realistic. And by far the deepest Bond. The rest seem like they are always up for a quick shag even if there's a ticking nuclear bomb in the background. |
Why don't you just download what you need? |
Lol. You sha wan give the thread CPR by force ![]() |
I think it is a very interesting thing. I also think it has nothing to do with spirituality but perhaps spirituality has something to do with it, if you catch my drift. Personally, I'm not sure where scientifical explanations ends and 'spirituality' starts. Naturally, we attribute things we know to some certain degree of certainty to exist but can't offer any explanations for as spiritual. I think probably, there are things that may just be beyond our grasp but I don't think anything is magic. For instance, I think God knows the mechanics behind Him saying 'Be' and something 'Be-ing". It would be a 'science' to Him. I may have digressed but I'm just trying to say, science, in the sense of knowing how something works is not so dissimilar with spiritual workings. |
InesQor:Hehehe |
Sadly, I don't think I have much sense to contribute to this thread but I'll read the posts you fine gentlemen post. And I'll DEFINITELY skip some other posts. Gawd! |
Ok, as far as I've seen, the closest star to us is more than 4 light years away. In that case, it is very likely advanced beings could have found us out. Then they use their awesome space crafts that can move close to, as fast as, or faster than light to get here. These space crafts probably are multipurpose utility vehicles so they double as helis and gliders and what have you. Then they get here. Decide to scribble some fancy lines for their amusement. One of the alien kids decides to make the stone henge for show and tell but forget she can't take it back with her. And all the other things we've seen as conclusive proof of aliens' existence. I almost certainly believe it is very improbable that there's no life anywhere else. I think it scientifically and statistically senseless if you're gonna be scientific about things. If you're gonna be religious about things, we may be the centre of the universe. There's an irony in there somewhere. All I'm saying is, I don't think aliens have visited earth. And if they have, I don't think it'll be a matter for debate as it would be beyond a doubt. |
Deep Sight:Oh yeah, a galaxy it is. My bad. In any case, I have forgotten the closest star to us and how far away it is but I'm sure it's pretty far away. Lemme find that out first. Why do we think 'aliens' would wanna remain anonymous and not say enslave all of us and take our land? Instead, they turn our planet into their tiny covertly overt museum? |
plaetton:Lol. The eye sees what the eye wants to see. You may see aircrafts and if it suits me, I may see designer socks by Ralph Laurent. There's a show on NatGeoWild with this scientist who goes around looking for strange undocumented creatures. You can see it in his eyes that he's just making a living and doesn't believe in all the BS he comes across. I'm willing to accept a supernatural explanation to these things though. And in which case, it can never be proven. |
I was reading through the thread and suddenly got very tired after the first dozen posts or so. I don't believe in aliens. I believe there are probably other beings in the universe, be it merely life forms or highly intelligent and advanced creatures. But I don't believe in aliens cuz that means, they visited Earth, which they're not from. I try to be simple in my thinking. The closest star to us is Andromeda if I am not mistaken. I don't exactly remember how far away it is. But I know it is ridiculously far away. And it'd take forever and ever for an alien living in probably one of the planets in Andromeda's gravitational field to get here. That is if the aliens had somehow found out that we are here and all. And that is if they're somehow able to live forever and ever to not be 'skeletons' by the time they get here. Say, the aircrafts being depicted and 'recreated' by these ancient folk are unmanned (unaliened) scouts, how will we explain all the crazy things they have 'apparently built? And I don't think they'd come here with such primitive looking crafts. The Stone henge et al. In fact, I've gotten tired of what I'm saying. Lemme just say, not every crazy thing we cannot explain can be explained by even crazier theories. Any theory proposed, can be dismissed scientifically since they raise more questions they answer. But I really have to ask, do some of you believe in these aliens or you're simply ready to entertain the thought of them? |
I brought some lemonade. Got an extra seat? ![]() |
LMAO at this: Nicolas Cage - Drive Angry, Season of the Witch and Trespass. It must require some form of talent to be as messed up as Nicolas Cage has become. Also funny how the raspberries are being shared by a select chosen few movies and participants. The dirty bomb was contained in a very strong magnetic field this time |
Thank God I don finish school. If my father see this one when man pikin still dey school, no joy for boys be that oh And y'all should just congratulate the boy jare. His achievement is not a cause for your life stories. Federal, State or private school no follow join. |
My word, Nairaland movie section has seen better days. The Oscars and no one is talking? Even the ones who dunno what they're talking about most of the time are not talking? Ojigbijigbi ![]() As for the list Obinna posted: 1. Best Picture: "The Artist." The Artist was a great movie and deserves the Oscar but PERSONALLY, The Tree of Life was the superior film 2. Actor: Jean Dujardin, "The Artist." Great performance. I personally thought his co-star was worth an Oscar win too. Casting was on point in this movie. Sorry Gary oldman. Next time 3. Actress: Meryl Streep, "The Iron Lady." At freaking last! I'm happy Viola Davis didn't win jare. 4. Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer, "Beginners." I have not seen this film and I'm not enamoured by the other nominees so it's just as well 5. Supporting Actress: Octavia Spencer, "The Help." Don't mean to be a hater. Next thing you know, I'm a massa worshipping nitwit suffering from inferiority complex but I'd have given the girl in The Artist. This is another 'dash them so they don't start a riot' win 6. Directing: Michel Hazanavicius, "The Artist." Another very personal opinion, but Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life is my take though Mr. Hazanavicius doesn't make this an easy choice 7. Foreign Language Film: "A Separation," Iran. Hell yeah! No points for anyone who predicted this! 8. Adapted Screenplay: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, "The Descendants." I'm not familiar with any of the stories before so I can't say anything here 9. Original Screenplay: Woody Allen, "Midnight in Paris." I can't choose a winner but I don't think it shoulda been Woody's oscar 10. Animated Feature Film: "Rango." Lol. No contest. That is all 11. Art Direction: "Hugo." No opinion 12. Cinematography: "Hugo." A tie with The Tree of Life and War Horse IMO. 13. Sound Mixing: "Hugo." No opinion 14. Sound Editing: "Hugo." No opinion 15. Original Score: "The Artist." No outstanding score this year 16. Original Song: "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets." Haven't seen this film 17. Costume Design: "The Artist." I suppose this is a correct win 18. Documentary Feature: "Undefeated." Ahem 19. Documentary Short: "Saving Face." Ahem 20. Film Editing: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Seen the Swedish film. I hear this is inferior and I dunno why it got so many nominations 21. Makeup: "The Iron Lady." No contest! 22. Animated Short Film: "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore." I may try to find this 23. Live Action Short Film: "The Shore." Ahem 24. Visual Effects: "Hugo." I am pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a travesty win by Transformers |
Wow!!!!! I'd pay serious money for those and kill the maker so no one else has them! Unbelievable ingenuity!!! |
Mo Abudu comes across as pretentious and feigning depth. But there's no doubt she's the most glamorous amongst them. Funmi, I like a lot. She's absolutely not disconnected from her audience. No pretense and down to earth. And Mo has nothing on intelligence or even diction or whatever. I don't even consider Funmi to be in their class jare. I dunno who the hell the other woman is. |
