Usually, I'm not very argumentative. But the lines of reasoning on this thread worries me. If racism is so bothersome to some of y'all (most of them are living in oyibo man country) why not come back to your fatherland? Most of you won't be caught dead watching a Tyler Perry movie which portrays blacks as better than what the 'white supremacists' portray us. All this conspiracy theories are awesome too. Hehe. The white man's preoccupation is to keep the black man down by all means. It will even reward the black man for fostering the image of blacks he likes to see. Racism is real. But because our ancestors were slaves, we think we have the right to talk trash. Racism is a two way street, though. I don't feel the white man owes me nada cuz of someone who got lynched in the past. What about all the great things white people have done too? But if I acknowledge that, I'm a brainwashed idiot who can't wait to eat the scraps massa gives me. Racism is not idiotic and asinine as over who got casted in what? The wise man will weigh an argument and modify his views. The fool will persist cuz of ego. Make una carry on foaming in the mouth. White Jesus loves you all ![]() |
All very good films except for Ti Oluwa N'Ile which I remember nothing about except something like a woman trapped in a jungle with wild animals. I had to sleep in my parents' room that night. I'll choose Saworo'ide as it was in my time so to speak. Oleku had the most profound Yoruba poetry ever. |
The Artist. Wow!!!! I thought we were a lost generation! I think I'll be watching first takes more often now |
Gad! *sips garri water* |
Well, this is painfully nostalgic ![]() |
Midnight in Paris I can't believe Owen Wilson starred in a movie I really enjoyed. Plus I could totally relate to the movie being a 'Golden Age' Nostalgia sufferer too. |
Eeww, the very worst kinda books |
Maclatunji, thanks. You dunno what for probably, but your response here made me feel really good. I really didn't know what to say to the OP |
Don't mean to be a er 'hater'. Your article is not artsy. It's more propagandaish. Like a tract. Your life is not permanent for one thing. For another, God is not with everyone in a sense. For yet another, not everyone God is with realises it. Etc |
Perhaps, this is a more sensible thread. The whole wahala is uncalled for if you ask me. As far as I know, you can't take a person's book and adapt it without the permission of the writer and compensation etc. In any case, if they tweaked some things like Olanna's potrayal, does that automatically mean sacrilege of the highest degree? Is the book like a sacred document that must not be tampered with? ESPECIALLY when the writer doesn't seem to give a freaking hoot. I'm really struggling with the whole problem. Perhaps some people have not detoxed from the Occupy Nigeria thingie. |
I saw The Grey and 12 Angry Men and Rashomon. The Grey was very good. 12 Angry Men was the best most predictable unpredictable movie ever. With a great lesson too. Rashomon, well, only me can love Rashomon. Earlier I saw again American Beauty and Fargo. American Beauty reminded me of Magnolia. I wouldn't have given it an Oscar. Fargo was classic Coen stuff. Dark humour. Very dark. True story too. Frances McDormand is so cute ![]() |
The simple matter is that you cannot make an adaptation of a book without the consent of the writer. If Adichie said she wanted nothing to do with the movie, that is all. If she really cared about who played who, she coulda made a stand. She's forfeited her rights. It's that simple. Probably she was compensated handsomely. Or perhaps the simple fact that her book will be made a movie is good enough for her. Whether you're a small time writer or a big shot means nothing. Your rights are your rights. When Chinua Achebe turned down money for the buffoon 50Cent to deface the title of his book, Things Fall Apart, I was so proud. And we, NIGERIANS did adapt the book into a very good series when our resources was not as much as it is now. We did something. Now our movie industry have stopped selling us religious garbage and now it's sexual noonsense that's the new gig. That's the problem, not whether person dey light or black. Chimamanda sold out. And so did we. I really don't get what the shrieking and hullabaloo is all about. There's indeed great talent in Nigeria. Most of us dunno about them cuz they will mostly want nothing to do with the celebration of mediocrity that is Nollywood. We'll see whether everything will not go ahead as planned, petition or no petition. Omar22 and Texasppete have been hitting the nail on the head since, I'm surprised the nail is not dead yet. |
TOH, I'm basking in your attention na. Plus, I don't know if I've disagreed on a subject with you before. So this is interesting. A discussion is supposed to be between people with conflicting views na. Why you sha wan cancel my freedom of speech? I agree wholeheartedly with the above btw. The thing is foreigners appreciate our culture more than us. Right from day one. But my point is this is pointless. I'd rather fight to get back that beautiful Benin mask chilling in some museum ThiefOfHearts: |
Lol. Get a petition na. ![]() And what has being a mod got to do with anything? :/ |
Kai, TOH is bored. She's enjoying herself. I'm going to drink zobo and sleep. |
Lol. I was gonna post but got sidetracked. Came back and everybody has something to say. Majority of which just echo my thoughts. I'm glad we're not all acting as if a freaking lyching took place. Petition! Hah! I hope Chiwetel gets replaced by Terrence Howard. Don't get me wrong though, I'd like an accurate potrayal of things and I actually prefer a Nigerian cast. But this is not nearly as serious as all this brouhaha. Petition! |
See how you made Jayboy, the other brain washed cow, modify all his posts. And he was on your side too. Person wey write book no lose sleep. Why una straight thinking folks wan kill una selves? |
I presume you're referring to Gandhi. Ben Kingsley has Indian roots. Screw that politically correct bullshit. Ben Kingsley IS Indian. Oscar nod ke? Let's not get ahead of ourselves oh. I've not even read the doggone book. Just a chapter. Truthfully, I understand the need for all this. It's all about marketing. I'd have preferred a reputable director and a Nigerian cast to an unknown director with a 'star' studded cast. I'm not holding my breath for a masterpiece. TOH, calm down jor. This has nothing to do with any average Nigerian IMO. And I totally meant what you think I meant there. Yeah, that's what I meant ![]() |
Lol. Really scary, cara |
I dunno anything about this but I'm sure there's plenty of things that went down. It's all about moner. In any case, it has little to do with Nigerians. Left to us, the book wouldn't even be successsful. No one recognized her before 'they' did. Furthermore, only Adichie has a say. A say that counts anyways. But I'm not terribly shocked she doesn't mind. This is business. She probably sold out. No crime. Not heartwarming esp considering the 'patriotic' nature of the book, but no crime. |
Lol. You don mad |
Baba ne, how much jale? |
:p |
Real Steel ke? When I saw it, I gave it 5/10. The corny confident kid thing is annoying to me and not adorable as I think is intended. Anyways, when I saw Warrior, Real Steel went down to 3/10. Warrior is a no bullshit straight to the point movie with a simple plot and stuff I can relate with. Saw Puss in Boots. I liked the cat, hated the movie and the uninspiring story. And that Humpty dude. Let's just say the only decent thing he did was die. Saw HP 7.2. It easily escapes us that Harry Potter and POTC are films that are for kids. Almost everything in the film was predictable for me. Only slight surprise was that Dumbledore and Snape switched personas, that is pragmatic and optimistic Moneyball: Awesome. That is all. |
I can safely say that the last time I saw Chuck Norris on TV is probably almost a decade ago. That dude is one very good badass. Awww, I hope George is not retiring with a broken heart. I saw clips of Red Tails and he was interviewed on Aljazeera about it. Seems he really put a lotta effort to bring about the film. It's a bit naive of him that the powers that be are not kumbaya about it. And all black cast potraying valor for Uncle Sam? Even I, am a bit cynical about it. I've always loved George as a character even though I think he's over rated with the whole Star Wars thing. I'll be sad to see him leave the movie business |
Say jare one more time, I dare you! I double dare you @*#)/! ![]() |
How about Santa? He must stealing Jesus' show too |
Look what Santa dragged in, kickin' and screamin'! Happy New Year! I remember you're my fellow Bourne lover! Bless |
Come Chika, you're apparently not a newbie on nl. How come I'm just noticing you in Movies? Hmmmn? I haven't seen Iron Lady cuz it just came out recently (and cuz I haven't seen anything) but she's overdue jare. I'm tired of her almost winning. Let her win the Oscar even if she's second best. ![]() Lol, Channing looks good but he's one dimensional na. The most outta character I've seen him is in one stupid film like that with Amanda Bynes. Ryan Phillippe used to be my favourite young actor. Ryan Gosling is kicking ass. I like Andrew Garfield too. There seems to be a lotta them. |
Kai, Chika! Stop showing off! You're making me feel terrible I've not seen all these movies ![]() |
Spiderman is my favourite superhero but The Avengers should be the better superhero flick IF they don't let too many cooks spoil the broth. |
Excellent work, Obinna. Gracias |
