Can we get serious for a moment? Spiritual gifts are Spirit of God manifesting Himself in a believer. When a demon-possessed man came to Jesus, the demons inside the man spoke THROUGH his body/mouth. When you are Spirit baptized, the Spirit animates your spirit and your spirit prays through your body/mouth without consulting your brains. So when the Spirit groans, He groans THROUGH your body. The game is called digression where you inject unnecessary and completely unrelated points to a discussion to stall it. What was the utility of casting out demons in Mark 16? shdemidemi: Please go check the difference between 'spirit' with the small 's' and Spirit with the capital 's'. Praying within the realm of your spirit is different from the Spirit praying for you. The Spirit knows the heart of God and His complete will hence He intercede for us.
ok, I am no more avoiding the chapter, I am now playing games right?
Can you point to one christian in scripture that got possessed by demons? |

We also know Jesus commanded the disciples to go and testify/witness and we know/trust they did On Pentecost, 1. we have the disciples speaking in tongues...ALL of them and they spoke of wonder works of God 2. We have Peter preaching and testifying about Christ resurrection and thousands turning to Christ the very thing in Acts 10 he tells Cornelius Christ commanded them to do Where do we have disciples testifying about Jesus Christ in unknown tongues? shdemidemi: Did Jesus tell them this- But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
If he did, were they speaking to God when the power came upon them or being witnesses of what they had seen?
You said earlier that 'witness' is the same word as 'testimony', remember?
If the Word say they (not just Peter) will all testify and be witnesses of what they have seen, I completely believe they did. |

What good does it do to pray in an unknown tongue? Your spirit prays. Somebody reminded you that in Romans, the Spirit intercedes with unutterable groans. if those are the same thing as praying in an unknown tongue, it is still effective because your spirit prays the PERFECT will of God. But Paul would have you understand that perfect will by interpreting your own tongues. Rocket science? Again and again, I have dozens of resources on Corinthians so if I really needed the circumstances of the book I have innumerable resources over the same. It is your arrogant insinuation that you possess some knowledge about the circumstances of COrinthians without which plain reading of the epistle is in vain. I know the game. Start a thread on the circumstances of the book and keep references to the same on this discussion to a bare minimum Jesus gave a gift to the disciples of casting out demons. Nobody said demons can inhabit Christians or whatever you imagine. The fact remains demon possession is as real today as back in 34AD. What privileges do you have that those early Christians don't have as far as spiritual warfare is concerned? Supposing a demon possessed sinner repents in 50 AD, would the demons come out automatically? What about the 2014 sinner? The truth is scriptures not phony arguments like self-edification vs church-edification nonsense. Or meaningless semantics such as tongue vs tongues shdemidemi: you are beginning to sound like one conceited bloke. In what way have I avoided any verse in our discussion. I have quoted from the same 1 corinthians so I don't think you know what you are talking about.
What did Paul say about those who say they pray (not in tongues) in an unknown tongue? He says pray that you may be able to interpret what you are saying.
what good would it do to talk to God in some language that you don't know what you're saying? Even if God is able to discern it, what if you can't? You don't know what you're asking for, and this is what Paul is pointing out. Whatever you do while communicating with God, do it in understanding.
I took time to explain the circumstances that surround this particular Book or Letter. It is important that we know the circumstances, and that makes all the difference in understanding.
Paul understood that the only way that you can bring people around to the truth is in the spirit of love, you don't slap them in the face with anger, or ridicule, and put them down as some kind of dummy, but in the spirit of love bring them around to the truth.
Paul is writing to these weak, carnal, fleshly, believers that have just come out of abject immorality in Corinth. He's writing to correct them because they had so many problems. So the whole theme of I Corinthians is to correct problems, and this whole letter has to be studied in that light.
I am not one who believe demons can cohabit with God in the body of a believer. Tongues or prayers does not stop demons either. But the knowledge of Christ is the only deliverance from all kind demons you want to present.
The bible says in John 8:32 2 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
The truth you know is what will set you free, not tongues. |

shdemidemi,
I have observed that you have vowed to shy away from 1Corinthians because it contradicts everything you have been fed. Somebody is not ashamed of discrediting an inspired epistle just so that they may not read it and receive its truth.
1 Cor 14:14-15 (KJV) Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also
Did you know that tongues are used in prayer? This is straight off he Inspired scriptures and not fantasies or straining verses to fit my doctrine. So when I pray in an unknown tongue, it is my spirit-man praying not my brains. How praying with my spirit is rendered obsolete just because now I have New Testament?
And you are yet to explain to us how we should deal with demoniacs seeing the sign of casting out demons is long expired. Have you ever met a demon-possessed person? |
Christianity Etc › Re: The New Testament Prophets Defined. by vooks: 6:06am On Nov 11, 2014 |
Nowhere do we have the gift of tongues used to testify nothing. Let me educate you on what it means to witness and testify; Acts 10:42-43 (KJV) And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Here is Peter explaining what witness is all about. I have asked you a commonsensical question. If during Pentecost the 120 had been doing this in other tongues, was it necessary for Peter to stand up and preach? Two instances you are told in other tongues they extolled God, magnified God and this last one I had missed and thank you for pointing it, they prophesied. None of that is testifying of what Peter said they were commanded to do in Acts 10:42-43 So once again my brother, where in the entire scriptures or even outside do you have a record of Holy Spirit coming upon a person and them preaching or testifying about Christ in a language they never learned? On what basis then do you claim that speaking in tongues was preaching/testifying about Jesus Christ in a language you never learned? And finally, is Peter's sermon in Acts 2 :14-40 delivered in a language he never learned? What language is that? shdemidemi: Isn't this translation enough to tell you they were speaking about God to the people.
Error! It was manifested three times in this book of Acts-
Acts 2:6
"Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language."
This is the first time in Scripture that we have a manifestation of the Holy Spirit given to men - this gift of speaking known languages, but which was not intrinsic to their own education. In other words, where did Peter and most of the disciples come from? Galilee.
They were uneducated fishermen, and all of a sudden here they are speaking the various languages that were evident there on the day of Pentecost. It was miraculous, and it was the work of the Holy Spirit, but as Paul said in I Corinthians, who were these men talking to? Other men, and what was the purpose? To bring them salvation.
That's the whole purpose of this Book from cover to cover. The purpose is that mankind might hear the plan of salvation, and it was the same way at Pentecost. Peter and these other disciples were promoting the Gospel of the Kingdom, that Jesus was the Christ, but they were doing it in languages that everyone could understand, so it had a divine purpose.
The second time it happened-
Acts 10:45b,46
"....as many as came with Peter (these six Jews) because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. (how did they know?) For they heard them (the Gentiles) speak with tongues (known languages) and magnify God..."
Were they talking to God? NO! They were talking to fellow men and they were magnifying God in the presence of these seven Jews, as well as the members of the house of Cornelius, and there is no manifestation of an unknown language here or a guttural sound. It was speaking languages. That's the second time that the Holy Spirit was manifested by giving the gift of speaking more language than they were normally living with.
Now the third and last time that this happens in the whole of Acts is in Chapter 19. The first time it happened to Jews in Chapter 2 - strictly Jews. The second time it happens - to a whole house of Gentiles.
19 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
I believe they did exactly what Jesus said they would do. Peter took the opportunity since everyone had come out to see them. He delivered his first sermon. What is the problem with that. |

I never said Jesus requires my permission to take me home, you did and you shouldn't be ashamed of it. And if you are, swallow your pride and withdraw your statement. The creation GROANS in eagerness waiting the redemption of the children of God, it was subjected to frustration. Show me a single historical document or paper that shows Israel tithing on ANY non-agricultural stuff. You can't. I referred you to Josephus a first century Jewish historian. You can a,so dig into the Talmud. Scriptures, history and common sense stand against non-agricultural tithing Josephus the first century Jewish historian; http://www.earlyjewishwritings.com/text/josephus/ant4.htmlIt is only tithers who invoke Malachi curses. Scriptures are inspired and that's why your church no longer bans women menstruating simply because it is written Jesus had reverence for Moses and censured the Pharisees for voiding it with their traditions. That is not a call to Christians to keep Moses as you pretend. That's why Jesus calling Pharisees to keep on tithing is as valid as Jesus commanding a leper to keep Moses Because you are hard of hearing I will repeat. There is no record of Jesus tithing. His occupation" carpentry did not fall under agriculture so he was ineligible to tithe. When a Pharisee says he tithes ALL, and we are told tithing is from agriculture, we don't need discernment to understand that ALL means what is tithe-able. Did he tithe his kids? What about wives if he had many? Let's try and avoid suspending thinking when it comes to scriptures. Logic is most certainly not incompatible with Chriatianity. Image123: Don't be unreasonable. i have been on NL for many years talking about and explaining the tithe. So also have some of the people i mentioned earlier. Our posts are available for perusal. i do not know how many of them including me, that you can point to or show that they proclaim curses on antitithers. They say charity begins at home. This is a medium for discussion, and i usually say that all doctrines, passages and bible teachings have their abuses and misuses. It's unreasonable to be reactive rather than proactive. You should behave and respond chiefly based on what the Bible says, or at least what the principal/primary/fellow discussants are saying or doing. Instead, you and most of the others would rather react on some fellow or story somewhere that is not directly reachable. And you would most times commit the fallacy of stereotyping all tithers under the same alleged practice/teaching/belief. i'm interested in what the Bible says, not in what your pastor or neighbour's pastor says. Malachi is scriptures and anybody is free to read them anywhere. ALL Scriptures remain inspired by God and profitable. No human has a right to cut off any part of scriptures or discourage others from reading or using it. At least, thank God that one is in the new testament Bible. Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Any baby christian should understand that we are in the period of the 'new' covenant. One major character of that covenant is GRACE that came through Jesus according to John. That grace is so exceeding that it delivers man from judgement, at least judgement is not as instant as it was in the OT. While in the OT, a murderer or rebellious child was killed, in the NT there is GRACE and that person can be forgiven and repent. We don't say oh we are in the NT and Killing and rebellion are now okay. While the judgement is restrained as it were, the commandment or precept is still valid. It is same thing or thereabout with the tithe. Lev 20:9 For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.
The point here is, do not EVER assert again that Jesus or His disciples NEVER tithed. That is one of the lies antitithers peddle around to trip the unwary. Jewish history says NOTHING about non agricultural tithes being invalid. Jesus Himself referred to a pharisee that tithed of ALL that he possessed. It wasn't rocket science or conjectures, it was history. Luk 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
You are pushing towards unreasonable. Antithers usually insist that only farmers tithe and that Jesus wasn't one. The Bible shows that scribes tithed, rulers tithed, pharisees tithed. What is so remote as to assert that Jesus NEVER tithed. Perhaps Sadducees never tithed too, since it is not specifically mentioned? There is no viable document or fact that says that Jews tithed agricultural produce from Israel alone. Or that some people are not eligible to tithe. It is not written anywhere in the Bible but a product of the antitither's imagination.
We are not imagining the purpose of the gift, it is written in the scriptures. Go and read them. The leper had to go to the priest for CLEANSING and to be INTEGRATED back into society. Jesus had OBVIOUSLY cleansed the leper in question. All he had to go do with the priest was for integration into the community. He was to offer for a testimony unto them, not to be cleansed. If you lived in Israel as a leper, Jesus would tell you the same thing. Christians should be subject to authority. Jesus paid tribute and the apostles wrote to believers to submit to authority. Paul was a christian and he offered sacrifices when he went to the temple. Peter and John regarded the temple's hour of prayer. They were not renegades or seditious. You have a lot of ignorance that i tolerate so stop all this assertiveness about NEVERs, you know not that much as to say NEVER. |

Peter is preaching at Cornelius house. Holy Spirit comes upon the house. They are speaking in tongues Are they testifying? To whom are they testifying seeing all have received the gift and the only other guys in the room are believers? Acts 2:7-11 English Standard Version (ESV) 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
Acts 10:44-46 English Standard Version (ESV) 44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, You can't possibly call whatever happened in Acts 2 witnessing and preaching the gospel in tongues. If it were then there ws no need for Peter to stand up and preach or was the speaking in tongues not sufficient to convert souls? We have pursued this argument to its absurd conclusion where you infamously claimed that Christ would require your permission before taking you home with the obvious implication. You will once again be at pains in explaining the contradictions between pre-Fall life and life in CHrist. Now let us take your own fixation on the fallen world and how that challenges come as a result of it. Paul says because of sin, the world became fallen and death reigned. What did sin bring? Sin brought poverty, sickness, lack etc. Now Paul says as righteousness came by Jesus Christ, those who now take a hold of the abundance of grace and the gift of Christs righteousness will reign in life. Reign over what? Reign over sin and the consequences of sin which are for e.g, sickness, poverty etc. |

The delusion of a poverty/disease-free utopia accessed by faith several times that of Jesus is what am saving you from. Don't thank me, all glory belongs to God You can't arbitrarily assign the reference behind the pronoun 'WE' to the apostles,Corinthians, all Christians to suit your prejudices. The apostles suffered and sacrificed the most for their faith but they were not the only ones who did this. You have shot so many points off anywhere else but scriptures. Compact doctrines of men. GO back to the questions i asked you because it is waste of time repeating myself The 120 did witness AFTER Pentecost but they NEVER witnessed in the supernatural tongues. I just showed you that Peter preached in Hebrews the very first sermon after the baptism of the Holy Spirit. What Bible do you use that records the use of tongue(s) in spreading the gospel? I don't know all the languages of men so my ignorance don't reduce the gift of tongues in the present church to gibberish. You like those Jews of Acts 2 revile what you don't know nor have ever tasted. Did the 120 testify after they got empowered by the Spirit?
What language do you think they speak in today's churches when they go -rababababababarababbraba? Guess what I have done it before.

This is your contradiction. On one hand we have the scriptures so we do not need the spiritual gifts, but on the other hand, LONG before we had the scriptures, the gifts were done away with because no mention is made of the gifts to the churches. Which is it sir? Arguments from silence are notoriously unreliable. I can also argue that the reason the gifts were never mentioned is because they perfectly understood them when he taught and there was no need for an epistle to correct them. See in a bid to understand scriptures you have dug dip into the circumstances of the epistles. But am afraid you are missing at truth staring at you as you keep digging for 'deeper' significance of the text. Before you read between the lines, please read the lines it is extremely CARNAL and it borders on blasphemy to impute purpose to Inspired epistles and on that basis to rank them as less significant. Paul taught in Corinthians some truths you won't find nowhere else because Holy Spirit wanted me to learn about them. So that lame and dumb theory of Corinthians being 'immature' so the epistles are irrelevant won't wash. He also taught love, faith and hope to this church the supposedly 'mature' doctrine shdemidemi: My friend, Paul made this carnal church understand that some gifts will be done away with at some point. Today, it is quite evident that we have been unable to carry out those sort of miracles the apostle wrought just after pentecost.
Moreover, Paul never spoke about those showy gifts in the more spiritually matured churches. Pau;'s message always revolved around Faith, Love and Hope.
The problem in the carnal church was lack of love. Paul taught them love and not self edification cos love isn't self(ish).
In a more matured church where they had love, he taught faith.
And where they had passed in love and faith, he taught the meat of the word which is embedded in HOPE. |

20 And are built (past tense) upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. |

is there ANY of what Paul writes about spiritual gifts that is not applicable to the (then) entire body of Christ barring your cessation theory? shdemidemi: One of those instances was when Paul told the men to stay away from women in Corinth. This was because Corinth draws a semblance with our present day Las Vegas, even worse. Corinth was a hub for brothels, gambling, idolatory and all manner of all licentiousness. Corinth was probably the most the most immoral, wicked, corrupt city in the Roman empire.
There was a great temple dedicated to one of the Greek goddesses that sat above a promenade above the city of Corinth. And at the very height of Corinth this temple up on the hill to which they worshipped the Athenian goddess, had thousands of prostitutes who were operating as the goddesses of the temple. You have to realize that their whole society was programmed to this, and so it was just part and parcel of their religion to be involved in immoral practice with the prostitutes of the city.
And in the very midst of the gross immorality, in this great city known for its activity of commerce and trade, comes this one lone man. The gospel of God was rested on this one man. In spite of all, Paul persevered and christianity thrived in this city.
In other words some of those things Paul them will not be generally applicable to all christians. |

maybe? Is this a yes/no/not sure? Psalms 92 was written closer to Hezekiah than to vooks. IF from that Palms the righteous are supposed to live long and enjoy good health, how comes a righteous king fell sick to the point of death and died 16 years below what Moses would regard as prime age of 70? Bidam: Maybe. Does the psalm i quoted apply to believers? You keep shifting and twisting, why na? |

I will not respond to gossip nor defend those claimed that God is not healing. Fact is He does heal today but God healing and a disease-free utopia are poles apart Paul meant the apostles when he used 'WE'? Hmmmmm..... Let's test your claim 1 Corinthians 15:51 English Standard Version (ESV) 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, Is Paul telling us that today some apostles are still alive awaiting Christ's return? Bidam: When you accuse folks who use God's authority to heal sicknesses and diseases you are automatically saying it is wrong for God to heal people.
Paul talked about WE meaning the apostles. Are you among the 500 or more? Please always read in context abeg. Yet you never quoted Paul saying as poor making many rich in the same Corinthians abi?(2 cor 6:10)
Go read starting from verse one to understand Paul in CONTEXT. You are welcome. |

Was that Psalms relevant to Hezekiah? Bidam: The question is whether the scripture applies to a believer? yes or no? stop prevaricating issues here. We are not on the same page here. A righteous king by deeds abi? How much more the imputed righteousness we have by the blood of Christ built on a better covenant and promises. A christian lives on even after he is gone to sleep.
Care to explain? |

What is the 'complete work of the apostles'? When was it completed? shdemidemi: That is what I am saying, no man can reach full maturity because we carry a body of sin (sin nature). But we grow and day by day from one degree of God's glory to a higher degree.
Perfection as regards to the church is the complete work of the Apostles. The present church does not need to lay any other foundation. All we need is to glean from what had been perfectly done by the Apostles. |

shdemidemi Don't patronise me bro. I am not here to change anyone's mind, God does that. Don't confuse your assumptions for scriptures I never said he did, I wonder where you got that from. Where is it written that paul preached in other languages? scared! for what? Scared of the truth I wonder how else you need to be shown before you understand it.
Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to His disciples instructing them to wait for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit which will enable them to testify/bear witness of His resurrection. I need scriptures that show it. We have sufficient scriptures on tongues and none on witnessing in tongues. Other than your imagination, where else do you find evangelists preaching in a language they never learnt? What is important here, is it the self edification or the edification of the complete body?
I wonder if Timothy or Siilas or Titus were ever told to speak in an unknown tongue to grow. think! Self-edification is edification. Edification of the entire church is edification. Paul spoke against praying in tongues publicly since others had NOTHING to gain from them if nobody was interpreting. Is edification beneficial? Yes it is. If so, what replaced tongues as a means of edification and at what point in time? I need to think, am not thinking. Wow! Are you angry? Paul mentioned it himself, so what is the issue here! Where does Paul mention witnessing in tongues? Was intepreting tongues a custom made spiritual gift for Corinthians or is it as universal as other gifts? What is interpreting tongues? Once again my brother, Gish-gallopping won't save you. I can prophesy that unless and until you confront the traditions you desperately cling to, 15 years from now, you will be regurgitating the same trash |

I don't know who said that it is wrong for God to heal somebody today. Did I say that? Paul was correcting an error regarding resurrection BUT he touched on a Christian's welfare in this PRESENT life. That's why I picked the verse. Mbaemeka am sure he believes in resurrection just like I do and at no point was this an issue. Please go and reread my threads on 1 COr1 15:16 to understand the thrust of my argument Thanks Bidam: Let's start with healing which you and your cohorts propagate with relish that's it's wrong for God to heal someone today. Do you agree that satan is the originator of sin and sicknesses? Rephrase, mbaemeka never told you he does not believe in ressurection. |

If Holy Spirit said that and stopped there, then we would be on the same page. Hezekiah a righteous King checked out at 54 years of age. He had gone down with a disease 15 years before at the age of 39 and it nearly took him out Look, there is a clear command not to kill yet a few pages later you are supposed to kill a witch. is it a contradiction? Bidam: Do you believe what the Holy Spirit said through David or you want to use another story again to force your opinions? You can as well ask me directly why Jesus died at 33. SMH! |
