Career / Re: Which Course Will You Discourage Your Child From Studying? by Wallie(m): 10:17pm On Dec 18, 2012 |
I guess I didn't answer the question! There's no way I'll give in right a way to a child that wants to study anything that I feel is a waste of the child's potential! Am I a typical Nigerian? Yep, and I'm unapologetic. In today's world, I feel every professional should have some foundation that allows them to converse with or, at the very least, understand the technical crowd. Technology will very much control the future and will determine who leads and who follows. There's nothing wrong with following someone else’s lead but I have a problem with someone capable of being a leader lazily settling to become a follower. For a first degree, I will bark at anything that’s not science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. For a second degree, the child can go study whatever he/she likes even making pottery. But I can almost guarantee that his pots will be second to none. A child of mine that refuses to go to college will get written off and ignored. That’s how strongly I believe in education. 3 Likes |

People don give lawyers bad name o! Lawyers are not necessarily liars; they’re just good at discerning facts and creating reasonable doubt. You guys should be in awe for it takes a truly skilled person to get someone caught red-handed, with blood on their hands, off. On a more serious note, engineering should be encouraged because 33% of the S&P 500 CEOs' undergraduate degrees are in engineering and only 11% are in business administration. There must be something about those who studied engineering that makes them more likely to be CEOs than any other degree or is it the degree itself? Either way, having a first degree in engineering will likely lead to success. More interesting stats about CEOs - Less than 10% of top S&P 500 CEOs received degrees from Ivy League schools. - All the CEOs of utility S&P 500 companies possessed bachelor degrees, making them the most highly educated group. - The functional role that led to becoming a CEO was most commonly finance at 15%, followed by general management at 9%. - Printing and publishing companies had the least educated S&P 500 CEOs. Only 91% held bachelor degrees. - 60% of the CEOs in this IBM study cited creativity as the most important leadership quality. Fairness and humility came in last at 12%. - About 60% of a CEO’s time is spent in meetings. - CEOs spent 25% of their time on phone calls and at public events. - And only 15% of their time was spent working alone. - CEOs spent 42% of their time with other employees. - Among outsiders, CEOs spend about 4.7 hours per week with consultants and only about 1.3 hours with suppliers. http://www.businessinsider.com/ceos-majored-in-engineering-2011-3?op=1 |

Religion / Re: Why Are Nigerians So Obsessed With Religion? by Wallie(m): 5:04pm On Dec 18, 2012 |
Logicboy03: As far as I'm concerned, you can say whatever you want unless it is against the law. The problem you will run into, by being in the minority, is that the laws were created by people with religious leanings. The day you become a majority and can influence the laws as crafted, then maybe the traditional religions won’t have as much influence as they currently do. For example, people in a few states in the US legalized homosexuality and smoking marijuana, and that only happened because they had the numbers to change the laws. There’s no doubt that religion has been used in the past and currently to justify all kinds of inhumane actions. The truth is that politics influences religion and religion serves as another “thing” that can be used to separate “us” from “them”. Pastors use it and so do imams. It is not until we evolve as human beings and truly understand the basic notions of wrong or right that we can free ourselves of rogue pastors and imams. And this is one of the ignorant aspects of how we practice religion. |

Logicboy03: 1. Sure it does for believers of Abrahamic faith. Their religion stipulates that certain things are immoral and that’s their belief not yours. You are free to believe whatever you want; it is a free world after all. 2. Ok. Why’s that your headache if you don’t believe in the religion? 3. Good for you but it is none of my business why you do what you do. 4. Well, no one will question your belief in the Quran or Bible and it should be no one’s business. That’s your prerogative and headache BUT you not following the law as laid out in statutes will land your behind in jail. 5. Your interpretation of world events. It seems you’re trying to draw me into a discussion about atheism and I’m not really interested. I’m way too evolved and certain of my own belief that I don’t need your approval or disapproval. My belief is my belief and yours is yours. I'm more interested in why people choose to ignore their religious teachings, whatever it may be, if they're truly religious; hence, my focus on hypocrisy. |

senbonzakura_kageyoshi: Look, religion is like the law. Look at all the laws we have in this country. So many of them are actually good, but between the people who break the law and the people whose responsibility it is to uphold the law we have two sides that have a law but refuse to respect it. So the law isn't the problem, but the defenders and those it is binding on. Reason why I said the legal enforcement of the laws is the real issue. Pastors and Imams will try to save every soul, and rightfully so. But it is the main purview of law enforcement officers to punish those who break the law. If every looter, robber, embezzler, 419er, kidnapper, molester and killer is in jail or serve jail time as stipulated for the offense they committed, Nigeria will be a better place and crimes will reduce. Period. However, after seriving jail time, the pastors and imams can then continue to try to save the person's soul. |
Religion / Re: Why Are Nigerians So Obsessed With Religion? by Wallie(m): 3:55pm On Dec 18, 2012 |
Logicboy03: Wrong. Religion is not the problem but people's hypocrisy and ignorance. If people of Abrahamic faith followed the teachings of their doctrines as professed to them, Nigeria will be a better place. No Abrahamic religion tells anyone to be unjust and all do profess some kind of punishment or karma for sins in this life or hereafter. However, it is the lack of legal repercussion and the belief that sins can be forgiven if certain acts are performed that makes people choose to sin. But religion does need forgiveness of sins, otherwise, how can you turn a truly repentant thief that already paid his debt to society and now looking for a new direction into the righteous path? If people are forever condemned due to acts performed in the past, what motive will they have to change their ways? The ignorance aspect includes poverty. People just lose all sense of objectivity and rationalization when it comes to religion and it is usually because they’re poor or in need of something. The bottom line is that if legal laws are enforced, most of the hypocrisy that’s associated with religion in Nigeria will disappear because the punishment for one’s illegal actions, which includes most sins, will be immediate. The other aspect included in hypocrisy, morality, should be the only thing religion has to deal with. Right now, we expect our pastors and imams to condemn looters and robbers; where the hell are the law enforcers? Or did we give our religious leaders some type of power to investigate crimes? |

It should be obvious to people with common sense that going to a place with no support system can be very difficult but just because something is difficult does not mean it is invaluable. The rule about America is that there are no rules or set template to follow before you make it. About the only thing you can almost guarantee is that if you work hard you will live an ok life. I really don't understand why people are so preoccupied with being rich! Everybody can't be rich...it is just impossible because being rich will then be the norm. For example, the median household income in Maryland for 2009 is $69,272 (N10.7 million) which is considered being rich in Nigeria. For you to stand out in Maryland, you will need to make about 4 or 5 times the median household income. What people should strive for is an income that allows them to have the basics things to keep their family happy. That might mean having a house, a couple of cars, taking a vacation every year, being able to eat whatever you want, having a few dollars in the bank, and having enough spare change to donate to a charity of your choice. By the way, Americans that live America, a country so bad that you should stay away from, gave $347 billion to charity in 2011. People willingly gave $347 billion to those seeking assistance for a cause. If this is not a sign of properity then I don’t know what is! Oh, and since when is getting a mortgage or a loan bad especially when you can get a $300k mortgage for 30 years at about 4%? It seems the OP thinks that if cheap mortgage becomes available in Nigeria most people won’t jump on it! If you buy stuff on credit, at least you will get to own it after you pay off your loans. Do you really think your Dangotes and Adenugas do not get loans from banks? I think you don’t really understand how money can work for you even at the crazy 25%+ interest rates charged by Nigerian banks! It is all about leverage! 12 Likes |

KA24DETT: are you kidding me, I can't believe you guys think that the mpg on dash display is accurate. No it's not. The best way is to fill up your car, check the odometer and drive , fill up your tank. Calculate the miles you drove from your odometer and divide by the gallons of fuel u added. You're conflating issues. The mpg calculated by your car is not 25% off. Go ahead and post a link to the article you cited. You're comparing a car's window sticker mpg to actual driven mpg. You car's mpg calculation is simply (miles per hour driven /gallons per hour burnt). Where the discrepancy comes in is in determining how much fuel was burnt in one hour. As such, the mpg displayed in your car is just an estimate but a very close estimate. |
Politics / Re: Is Sanusi Still Better Than Soludo? by Wallie(m): 1:39am On Dec 14, 2012 |
Nashville: Truth is I didn’t pay attention to Nigeria’s economy under Soludo; I have no basis to judge the guy apart from using common sense in hindsight. I do not know whether Soludo was trying to clean up the sector or not. I’ll be interested in knowing what he did. If Sanusi did not go after the debtors and bankers that turned depositors money into their personal stash fund, who should? Who else understood what was going on? At that point, the EFCC either had no idea what was happening or they lacked the knowledge to investigate it. Like I said before, I think Sanusi was wrong for making certain things public when he did because he created or could have created panic. I’m 100% with you on that! There’s also no denying that his method was brute but unlike every other investigation started in Nigeria, we got to the bottom of it! For a change, feathers where ruffled and big man paid. But the question remains, should Sanusi have cleaned up the banking sector or simply standby and watch the sector cave in on itself or do you not agree that the crash was bound to happen? I’m glad you have more economics background than I do. What was the effect, if any, of capital flight on the banking sector a couple of years ago and who, if anybody, was to blame? Can you also speak to foreign confidence in the Nigerian stock market and how that affected all the recalled foreign loans to banks? Investing is about understanding the risks involved and when a smart investor can’t make sense of what you’re saying, he will simply take his money elsewhere! Then again, most Wall Street guys didn’t really understand the assets in their mortgage backed securities and they still invested in the billions. So much for not understanding risks! Here’s an analogy: if Mr A is sick with cancer that is rapidly spreading but went to the hospital for an unrelated sickness. Do you think his doctor that easily recognized his treatable cancer if operated on immediately should tell him to go for a checkup or should the doctor just ignore his unsolicited diagnosis and let him die? Nigeria had cancer that was rapidly spreading partly due to external forces and I see Sanusi’s intervention as nipping it in the bud before it became full blown. Whether the sadness that comes with knowing one has cancer is worth the effort to save one’s life is a question each individual will have to answer but recognize that our answers won’t all be the same and neither is wrong nor right. 1 Like |

Politics / Re: Is Sanusi Still Better Than Soludo? by Wallie(m): 11:11pm On Dec 13, 2012 |
Nashville: Lots of good posts here, but let's go back to the basics. What is the role of the central banks and what is the role of the banking sector? Banks are primarily to act as deposit institutions and also lend to the economy to support growth. The central exists to ensure the stability of the banking system and implement appropriate monetary policies to stimulate growth and reduce inflation at the same time defend the currency. The problem with your analysis is that you didn't even attempt to address the root cause of the rot in the banking sector and its effect. The recession witnessed in America started out of loans being made to everybody with a heartbeat. I'm pretty sure those buying the houses back then were happy and so were those selling the mortgages. Everybody was making a killing including the real estate agents, house flippers, bankers, Wall Street guys etc. I even got into the racket myself as an investor because the returns were too good to be true! You can literally buy a house and sell it in a couple of months for $20k profit. But what happened when reality set in? Everybody got touched one way or another even those far away in Nigeria that had nothing to do with the domino effect that resulted. My point is, you can only sustain a lie for so long and will have to pay the consequences sooner or later. Some people would rather wait to pay the consequences and others would rather get it over with. Sanusi would rather get over the inherent problems instead of propagating it. There’s no doubt that Nigeria was living a lie during that period. Further, what good were under-capitalized banks that can't lend money for any long term project? Do you think 30-day loans can grow an economy? Not everybody wants to import containers from China! 30-day loans won’t build a manufacturing plant or a company like Innoson. Most banks just didn’t have the type of funds needed for long term projects; they were way too small! Generally speaking, a cursory look at the posts in this thread has yet to show someone taking a honest balanced approach in evaluating both Soludo and Sanusi. It is a shame when we, the supposedly enlightened ones, can’t get over our biases and call things the way they are! And yet we expect Nigeria to be better? 1 Like |

Most Nigerians have a very short memory! I don’t know who is better but one thing is very clear, Sanusi inherited a banking sector in freefall! Nigeria’s stock market value crashed from N13.5 trillion in 2008 to N4.6 trillion in 2009. Where did all the money go and where did the money come from in the first place? Somebody somewhere lost a lot of money. What do you think will happen when $57 billion (N8.7 trillion) gets wiped off, practically overnight, in a $400 billion economy? In one way or another, Nigerian banks were left without a seat when the musical chairs started! They were either directly complicit in trading stocks or lent money to stock traders and companies listed in the stock market. Either way, the end result is the same – bad debt. Saying Soludo is better than Sanusi based on the banking sector collapse is like saying Bush is better than Obama because technically speaking, things didn't get this bad under Bush (forgeting the fact that he set the whole thing in motion). However, I believe Sanusi took some missteps like doing things to undermine confidence in the banking sector. Certain things should not have been made public when he did because it could have or did cause a run on the banks. Banking is about confidence and the last thing anybody who has money in a bank would want is for his money to disappear with a bank. Anyone remember the new generation banks of 1993? On other issues like “firing 50% of the workforce”, “subsidy removal”, “size of government” etc, theoretically, he’s right but theory and reality doesn’t always jive. For example, subsidy removal sounds good on paper because all the assumptions will happen as planned but in reality, the money/savings will disappear without a single trace. In Nigeria, the only thing you can assume and will become reality is that money will disappear. 1 Like |
Health / Re: Doctors Cure Leukemia Patient With HIV Injection by Wallie(m): 9:22pm On Dec 13, 2012 |
People are so funny! Name a cure to ANY virus once the host is infected? None. However, before infection, your body can be programmed to resist multiplication of a STABLE virus that enters into your body. If a virus is stable and rarely mutates, one can easily be programmed to resist it. Common Flu has no cure and new vaccines are developed every year because the virus mutates. This is the very same reason HIV currently has no cure. It changes so rapidly with many different strains to render vaccinations useless. In this particular leukemia case, a single strain of virus was deactivated and used as a vehicle to transport something into the cells. It's more about recognizing the good qualities of a deadly virus. Here’s an analogy: Mr A is at home in need of urgent medical attention but he’s paralyzed and can’t open the door. You tried everything you could but can’t get the door open. You heard of a thieving neighbor that can break into any house. Would you employ his services to break into Mr A’s home? 3 Likes |

Hydrocortisone in the low strength form (1% or 0.5%) does not need a doctor's prescription and it can clear most type of rashes or itch including those caused by eczema, cosmetics etc. 4. If you want to talk about religion then go to the Religion forum. This topic has nothing to do with being a Christian, Jew or Muslim. Christians spy on Christians all the time. Muslims spy on Muslims all the time. Friends spy on friends all the time (e.g. Israel spying on the US, US keeping track of its allies etc). As for Jews, it’s highly likely that orthodox Jews spy on regular Jews. There's strategic advantage to be gained by knowing what someone is doing in secret. Period. One last thing, Israel has a major motive to know what Sudan is up to because Sudan is used by Iran to manufacture weapons and also used as a smuggling point into Gaza. One can very easily determine what the equipment is capable of if they get their hands on it. I can't see any antenna which means that the frequency is relatively high because higher frequencies require smaller antennas. But with high frequencies, line of sight is required otherwise you will lose the signal because high frequencies are obstructed by hills, buildings etc. GPS works because it is in the sky and looks down at the receiving equipment. Also, to get any meaningful transmission range (greater than 2km), you will need a lot of power and the vulture just seems to be carrying a matchbox-sized equipment on its leg. If the Israelis are close by then anything is possible. Since they said they use the vultures for tracking, it already has a GPS receiver onboard but it shouldn't have an optical lens (you need one for a pic or video but not for tracking). There's a liquid soap called Dawn that will strip every bit of wax off your car giving you a clean slate to add new wax. |
