Mods, Please what happened to my Fareed Zakaria post?
Foreign Affairs › Cnn's Fareed Zakaria Apologises, Suspended Over Plagiarism by wesley80(op): 12:16pm On Aug 11, 2012
I love this guy, his analysis are always insightful and the subtle and convincing manner he presents the toughest questions and answers makes his CNN show "GPS" a favorite of mine so I was curious to see how this would end for various reasons. Well it has and the guy has taken a huge fall.
Time editor-at-large and CNN host Fareed Zakaria was suspended from both places for a month on Friday after admitting to lifting parts of a story from the New Yorker. Conservative media watchdog Newsbusters was the first to spot the similarities between a Zakaria piece on gun control and an article by Jill Lepore that appeared in the New Yorker in April. The Atlantic Wire posted a statement from Zakaria on Friday afternoon, taking full responsibility for the incident:
"Media reporters have pointed out that paragraphs in my Time column this week bear close similarities to paragraphs in Jill Lepore's essay in the April 22nd issue of The New Yorker. They are right. I made a terrible mistake. It is a serious lapse and one that is entirely my fault. I apologize unreservedly to her, to my editors at Time, and to my readers."

Later, Time announced Zakaria's suspension: Time accepts Fareed's apology, but what he did violates our own standards for our columnists, which is that their work must not only be factual but original; their views must not only be their own but their words as well. As a result, we are suspending Fareed's column for a month, pending further review. CNN also said it was suspending Zakaria because he plagiarized the same material for a CNN.com blog post: “We have reviewed Fareed Zakaria’s TIME column, for which he has apologized. He wrote a shorter blog post on CNN.com on the same issue which included similar unattributed excerpts. That blog post has been removed and CNN has suspended Fareed Zakaria while this matter is under review.”

Zakaria took liberally from Lepore's piece on gun control. Here is one passage Lepore wrote: As Adam Winkler, a constitutional-law scholar at U.C.L.A., demonstrates in a remarkably nuanced new book, "Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America," firearms have been regulated in the United States from the start. Laws banning the carrying of concealed weapons were passed in Kentucky and Louisiana in 1813, and other states soon followed: Indiana (1820), Tennessee and Virginia (1838), Alabama (1839), and Ohio (1859). Similar laws were passed in Texas, Florida, and Oklahoma. As the governor of Texas explained in 1893, the "mission of the concealed deadly weapon is murder. To check it is the duty of every self-respecting, law-abiding man."
Here is Zakaria's similar paragraph :
Adam Winkler, a professor of constitutional law at UCLA, documents the actual history in Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America. Guns were regulated in the U.S. from the earliest years of the Republic. Laws that banned the carrying of concealed weapons were passed in Kentucky and Louisiana in 1813. Other states soon followed: Indiana in 1820, Tennessee and Virginia in 1838, Alabama in 1839 and Ohio in 1859. Similar laws were passed in Texas, Florida and Oklahoma. As the governor of Texas (Texas!) explained in 1893, the "mission of the concealed deadly weapon is murder. To check it is the duty of every self- respecting, law-abiding man."
Robert VerBruggen, a writer for National Review, noticed other portions of Zakaria's article that hewed closely to Lepore's as well. This is not the first time Zakaria has come under ethical fire. Columnist Jeffrey Goldberg accused him of lifting quotes without attribution in 2009. He also caused controversy for his series of off- the-record conversations with President Obama, though he said they were no different than those the president held with any other journalist.

This is so sad. Had so much faith in this dude. At this point I sincerely hope we don't win any medal, we just have to learn the hard way. My heart goes out to all our Olympians that gave their best.

edoyad: I do hope a JAMB like aptitude test was conducted, if not I'll laugh at the whole process. This is Nigeria, where girls(and I hears guys these days too ) graduate with 2:1 for sleeping with the right person. These Private Universities dash out grades like bitter leaf, I heard.
For a 2.1 maybe, but to get a first class through "bottom power" you'd have to be better than Tera Patrick (Pls dont Google).

texazzpete: What does this have to do with 'Fresh Air'? This is just the NUC following laid down process for awarding some post-graduate scholarship. Quota system still exists whole sale in University admissions and Federal Government colleges. It still exists 100% in federal appointments.

You do not have to politicize everything. Shower praise on the guys at the NUC if they stand their ground (you don't know if they will buckle under pressure at the end) if you must praise anyone.

I have not seen any american hailing Team America's Olympics Gold haul as a dividend of 'Change We Can Believe In' or any of Obama's other campaign slogans.
Who's idea was the scholarship program? or in Nigerian political parlance, who's pet project was it? How many people do you think qualified from Bayelsa state? If this were to be a Buhari regime do you honestly believe a program that appears as lopsided as this would see the light of day? You really think so? And no Sir, I'm not giving the credit to the NUC guys, I'd rather give it to the one with the ultimate power that chose to allow the NUC do what's right. With a simple directive, the slots would've been shared equally, the average Nigerian "clued" politician by default would consider "slots", "region", "zone", "tribe" and the rest divisive terms that remain the bane of our society as soon as any issue that has to do with national resources creeps up but not this supposedly "clueless" one.
Yes its at best a modest demonstration of a willingness to change the status quo but nonetheless, its worth noticing because it represents the inclination of the man in power. Finally I'll do you a favour this one time and not tell you what you sounded like when you compared Nigeria with the US.
Politics › Re: Why Was Prophet Tb Joshua Not @ The Funeral Of President Attah Mills by wesley80(m): 1:32pm On Aug 10, 2012
Nigerian Prophet T.B. Joshua of The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations has called on Ghanaians to unite their words and deeds after arriving in Ghana yesterday for the funeral of the late President John Evans Atta Mills. Speaking to Ghanaian news station, TV3, outside the residence of the late President after praying for former First Lady, Naadu Mills, he advised Ghanaians, “We should let our words and our deeds be the same. I mean, what we are saying and what we are doing should be the same. We should not say this and do another thing. You have heard the testimonies of the people. If we had confessed these before now, that would have strengthened the courage of our father before his departure.” Contrary to media reports in Ghana which stemmed from Citi FM, an Accra-based radio station, Joshua did not term identifying the cause of Mill's death as 'unnecessary' but rather stressed the late Presidents destination was of greater importance than the manner of his departure. “When it is time for human departure, what caused it does not matter. What matters is for us to know the time and where we are going. If we know where our father is now, we would like to be there,” he said. When asked whether his role in Mill's life was that of a spiritual father, Joshua refuted the statement. “God is our spiritual Father,” he explained. T.B. Joshua, who was recently lauded as one of Africa's most 50 influential people by the prestigious Paris-based magazine, 'The Africa Report', recently said that his relationship with Mills started when he was Ghana's Vice President. After Mill's surprising ascension to presidency, his first port of call after his inauguration was to Joshua's church in Lagos for a thanksgiving service where he publicly testified to the accuracy of Joshua's prophetic insight in his three-round election victory. Speaking publicly about their relationship for the first time during his church service on Sunday 29th July which was broadcast live on Emmanuel TV, Joshua said Mills was a martyr whose death would serve as a catalyst for political unity in Ghana and a revolution in governance. The service was attended by Mills' only son, Sam Kofi Mills, who thanked God for the life and legacy of his father.

Acidosis: There would be You without the Church. .

You and I are the church says the Lord of host.

Never you misplace the real meaning of the church with the big buildings you see everyday. We can decide to serve God without a building. .and he would hear us.

It is a gross stupi.dity, earthly mad.ness for anyone to compare a church with any other thing on the earth.
Forsake not the gathering of the brethren he said. Should we gather in your house?

Proverbs 4:7-9 Wisdom is the principal thing therefor get wisdom and in all thine getting, get understanding 8 Exalt Her and She shall promote thee, she shall bring thee to honour when thou embrace her 9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of Grace; A crown of Glory shall she deliver thee.

1 Corinthians 1:25 The foolishness of God is wiser than men.
1 Corinthians 3:19 For the wisdom of the world is foolishness unto God.

If there be a house that teaches "wisdom" aside the church, show it to me and therein shall I abide for surely there lies the Spirit of God!

Question: What criteria was used that "appeared to be designed to exclude those from the Northern states"?

Answer: It was made exclusively for Graduates with a First class, NYSC discharge cert and those that graduated within the last two academic sessions.

Conclusion: Some provision should've been made to accommodate some "dullards" from the North; 'Federal Character' is what its called and its the antithesis to being "merit based" except that in Nigeria, that's the 'legal' way of doing things hence mediocrity holds sway in every facet of our collective national life from football to the highest office in the land, that's until someone brave enough chooses to ignore the usual 'Nigerian way' and does what's right. "Fresh Air" is what that's called!
Politics › ACF Protests Nuc’s Scholarship List by wesley80(op): 10:51am On Aug 10, 2012
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has protested the list of qualified candidates for the award of a presidential scholarship for innovation and development, which was recently published by the National Universities Commission (NUC), saying the criteria used for the selection were designed to exclude the North. The forum in a statement in Kaduna Thursday said the list, which shows a total of 348 candidates from the southern states as against a total of 83 candidates from the northern states, was a negation of the principle of federal character and balance. The statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, said the attention of the forum had been drawn to the “curious list of qualified candidates” as published in the newspapers this week by the NUC. According to the ACF, “if the NUC had permitted itself to be guided by the need for balanced development of Nigeria, it would not have nominated a preponderance of candidates for this vital programme from southern states to the near exclusion of the North. Oyo State, for example, has 52 candidates while, Sokoto, Yobe, Cross River and the FCT have no candidates each. “If it is a mistake, NUC should take immediate steps to correct it. As presently implemented, it is a disservice to the very objective for which the scheme was set up and to our aspirations as a people. The scheme is designed to train and develop young Nigerians to become entrepreneurs capable of creating jobs, wealth and progress. “However, although the list released by the NUC is on a state by state basis, it is not at all clear that the commission wanted candidates to come from all parts of the country. The criteria used to select the candidates appear designed to exclude those from the northern states. “It certainly enabled the NUC to ignore the national consensus on inclusiveness and balance of competing demands among groups and areas of the country.” Details of the list shows that Oyo has 52 candidates, Ogun 49, Osun 46, Ondo Anambra 45, Imo 14 and Abia 10, while states like Plateau, Taraba, Kebbi and Borno have one candidates each. Sokoto, Yobe, Cross River and the FCT have no candidates.
