This war is in it's last phase(could still last for decades though) attacks are becoming less frequent and on soft/small targets, the terrorists are nearly out of options and are desperate trying to maintain strength by looting weapons and equipment from small military bases. The last time they attacked brigade or battalion sized forces was end of April/very early in May. They have opened up another front by attacking each other. This isn't the time for the military to slack.

Destroying bandits hideouts alone will be meaningless if there are no plans to ensure that they don't regain strength to be able to threaten local communities again. We will just be running in circles. Prevent small arms and ammunitions from entering the country for a few months and many of these criminals will be forced to resort to honest means of livelihood. The military and police have been attacking bandits hideouts for years, the damages the bandits wreck keep increasing.

There are no known links between ISWAP and "bandits" of the northwest. It was JAS the bandits contacted after the abduction of the kankara boys. JAS has claimed having fighters in locations where bandits dominate. And the mode of operation and activities of "bandits" is in opposition to the ISWAP's doctrines so it will be difficult to see cooperation between the two.
This is one effect of the death of shekau that most didn't notice. The bandits will most likely be weakened.

I knew the issue of finance will come but the money spent in retiring these officers every few years its humongous. A little addition to it will do the trick. In West Africa there are many options for a command HQ likewise in other regions of Africa. Nigeria actually has more clout than you may think. The Military High Command can actually have some of these combatant commands for a start domiciled at Ship House and Defense HQ. The idea is not to go and start wars. The military is not all about fighting all of the time. Instead of a fire brigade approach like we had in Mali we can be ahead of the game. Countries we never thought of are now filling in the military gaps in most of these African countries that we used to do.

Defense costs money. This is a reality the present administration is slowly waking up to.

If we are to spend extra money on defense in this manner, why not focus more on solving internal problems.
I'm thinking along the line of a national guard force. Some of the structures are already in place. Deep blue will be converted to coast guard, manpower will be drawn from customs and immigration for border guards and the various state security outfits will be converted to state units of the national guard.

You can set up a West African Command with a Full General or Lt. Gen or its equivalent from either Service posted there reporting to Defence HQ and not to the Service HQ just like you have the MNJTF. There's already a West African template though ad hoc mostly which can be activated on full standby with a full mechanized brigade and support services of the NAF and NN bringing it up to division size.

Same command can be replicated for all the regions of Africa. In peace time they can gather intelligence, do recce, military diplomacy, courses, training and re-training among services and partner nations. That way you keep the Generals happy and busy. After all there's already medals for these in the Armed Forces of Nigeria. Get into action and apply these officers.

Continuing this tradition of retiring fine officers to make way for the political choice of a sitting president is counter-productive.

Regarding the deep blue project, with two surveillance aircrafts, three helicopters and three drones, is the plan 24/7 surveillance of Nigeria's waters? Are there plans for replacement of equipments as they get older? Are there plans for expansion of the program? Is there any plan for continuity or is it a one-off intervention? Are there plans to make the project self-sustaining by income generation or will it continue to depend on the government for fueling, repairs, maintenance and so on?

The legality or illegality will be determined by a court as there is currently no law very explicit about this particular case and there is no past case that can be used as an example. There are parts of the constitution and clauses that can be used to argue for and against it.


Mind you, this is just my own opinion, someone else with vast knowledge of law will be able to provide facts.

Dangote will be buying Nigerian crude in naira, that's the deal proposed with the NNPC. Don't be surprised when his refinery becomes fully operational nothing much will change FOREx wise and even the price of PMS.

Once the refinery starts operation, will be saving forex to the tune of millions of dollars everyday that would have been otherwise used to import refined oil products. When other refineries star ts operation, we will be exporting to other countries thereby earning more forex. The foreign reserves will increase in both cases and the naira will definitely gain in strength.

There is no way we were not importing fuel and didn't have fuel scarcity issues.
There is no way we were not exporting crude oil and government didn't have problems with paying workers and pumping money into the economy. Trading activities was reduced but it was never totally off.
