For every dollar spent in the US, they borrow a percentage of it, can't remember the amount, i think btw 5 and 25 cent or so. which is like 1 Naira to 5 or 25 kobo

The problem with income and profit tax in Nigeria is that very few are within the tax basket. The vast majority are in the informal sector where it is very difficult to tax.
As for me, increasing the VAT to about 20% will bring in lots of revenue for years, and with this, everyone will be generating revenue for the government.
It will serve as a way of recieving part payment for what government provide for free.

That's actually one of the few things the current attorney-General has been doing. Repatriating looted funds, settling financial cases like the P&ID case that Nigeria would been forced to pay over $9 billion to the company, the malabu case that Nigeria unfortunately lost but there are renewed efforts to reopen the case and so on. In the aspect of finance, the Attorney-General has really tried.

Meanwhile, a former NSA looted at least $9 billion at the height of the insurgency. We need to talk about this things more often too.

apart from the govt, we regular people here also use credit score for everything, my own score is 710 for example lol, which means with good income i can approach a bank and get a loan to buy a house or car etc.
even to rent an Apartment here, you must have a credit of over 680 in new york, minimum. otherwise no one will rent to you.
so if Nigeria have a robust tax base, generate good income and have good credit rating administered by international financial institutions, and strong Fiscal policies in place, we can borrow more

I still maintain that no one will borrow anyone money if they are aware you won't be able to pay it back. US debt is over $21 trillion, trust me they've paid at least 2 times that amount already via debt servicing.
At some point, those who own the debts will decide to forgive it, only after you've paid back more than the original amount in interest and not before. No one is really stupid to do that you know.

There are countries with far worse economic condition than Nigeria. Countries like Somalia, South Sudan, Congo, Benin, Cameroon, Chad and several others both within and outside Africa that have lower crime rates than us. We just like making excuses for bad behavior and crimes.

yes, community policing is usually a local thing. here in NY i think there are only about 4k state police officers, the others are local police officers, in the tens of thousands, every region has its own Mayor and local police department

These countries have meaningful plans to repay the loans before they borrow. In fact no one will borrow you money that they know you can't pay back. The little Nigeria has borrowed, we are still thinking of how to repay. How then are we going to be able to repay more than the current debt?

The problem is revenue generation. Nigeria has one of the most least revenue:GDP ratio in the world. How do we increase this revenue before we even start thinking of borrowing more.

In addition, we have billions of dollars in stolen funds all over the world. How can we get these money back.

cops in Nigeria doesn't carry out neighborhood patrols in most places, all my 18yrs in naija i never once saw police patrolling (albeit that was a llng time ago, i doubt much has changed). where i live now, day and night, in the rain, snow, sun etc, policing never stop. distribute these guys around sensitive areas, provide them with better communication devices, body Cameras, ability to call for backup and that backup arrives in less than 5 mins, this gives a police officer the confidence that he wouldn't be left alone if he found himself in a bad situation.
more 911 call centers, better pay for officers, lower pay equals bribery demands, pay them more.
educate these cops, how to read maps, some cops can't tell NW corner from SE corner lol. how to use computers, secure crime scenes, store evidence. the list goes on and on.
I hate how soldiers are involved in things they have no business being involved in, those guys are stretched too thin as it is. police need to step up

Mind you, the special constabulary police initiative was meant to solve the problems of community policing(which involves patrolling), man power problem and other major problems of the police force, few states have implemented it and this that have implemented it, it seems not to have achieved results.
Only Lagos state with the RRS initiative has actually improved policing efforts. Some other states are trying to some extent too(e.g Osun state with the harmomised vigilante group) but more needs to be done.
In addition, expecting a single police force to be in charge of effective patrolling every neighborhood in Nigeria will be very costly and extremely difficult, but sharing the funding and responsibility to all levels of government will make it easier and this brings about separate police forces at the federal, state and local levels.

But one thing to note before that is that many people are actually not interested in honest means of livelihood, many want to live big with little work.

Check South Africa's current unemployment rate and compare our crime rates to theirs.

UPDATE 2-Nigeria to borrow $1.76 bln for security spending –FinMin

ABUJA, June 9 (Reuters) - Nigeria plans to borrow 722.53 billion naira ($1.76 billion) from domestic capital markets for additional security spending, Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed said on Wednesday.

As part of Nigeria's security spending, the World Bank also agreed to allow the government to restructure existing loans of 39.58 billion naira to supplement the funds, she told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

The cabinet also approved an allocation of 83.56 billion naira for the purchase and deployment of 30 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

Guys, let's discuss this, beyond equipping the military and other security agencies, what else do you think is required to solve the problem of insecurity.

It is the government they have issues with not the people. Sanctions against members of the government will be more appropriate and that's what they do most of the time.

If they have been trying to cut cost though, this is a good excuse.

i won't risk sending my kid to any school if i live in such an area. if not for lack of infrastructure, online learning would be better.

The goal here is to reduce exposure time of students from 24hrs to less than 8hrs.
It will also ensure that other security measures employed for protection of schools will have reduced work hours.
And kidnapping large number of students is different from hit and run, virtually all the mass abductions occurred during dark hours, they will need the cover of darkness to escape as far away from civilization as possible where risk of detection will be minimal.

Govenment Secondary School Chibok finally reopened after 7 years. The school was closed on April 14, 2014 after mass abduction of schoolgirls.

They shouldn't offer boarding services Sha, no school in the north should be doing that. Even higher institutions, they should seek accommodation on their own, the fees will be reduced significantly Sha. This way, it will be difficult for students/pupils abductors to abduct large numbers.

Date aside, the soldiers in that base simply abandoned their positions and the terrorists had field day burning those equipment. How else can a base with tanks, MRAPs APCs and so on be destroyed like that? Where are the bodies of the soldiers killed in the attack, it is very obvious the attack had just happened when the soldier was recording, some of the equipments were still smoking yet no bodies. The video is of poor quality so we can't see blood stains.

Even if some of the equipments are in poor working conditions, they still provide the troops lots of advantage over the terrorists attacking with only gun trucks.
No doubt, the equipments are outdated, that isn't a reasonable excuse, are are fighting guntrucks, soft skin Toyota hilux! The same innoson vehicles ISWAP is capturing and putting to good use against them. Even the first generation of tanks will comfortably take out guntrucks.
The maintenance culture of the army as a body is very bad but even if some of these soldiers are given the most recent equipments, they will not do basic maintenance and check up before using. Common sense will tell you to inspect your vehicle before using everyday. Any engine will overheat if you don't maintain it, especially those of heavy equipment plying very long routes. Engineering corps won't come and do basic maintenance for you in the field.
The only thing I can take from the video is that the soldiers are tired of fighting and looking for excuses to leave. NA should reduce the duration their soldiers use in the Frontline to start with. The longer they use, the more rusty and unwilling they become.

And if it is a recent attack, we will hear about it soon enough. But a propagandist will use anything available to him to disseminate propaganda.

How about we shock them one of these raining seasons,defenses will be weak because they would have expended much of their power during the dry season. Deploy light tracked vehicles(the MLTBs and spartan IV will do, maybe the scorpion light tanks too Sha) to overcome the terrain and constant air surveillance to avoid ambushes. Mine rollers and other mine detectors to overcome IED challenges. Air support and artillery cover should be of utmost importance to ensure protection should in case they get bogged down by terrains. We cannot afford to be on offensives at only certain seasons. In fact the Raining seasons should be used to our advantage as it will severely limit the capability of the enemy too.

Meanwhile, that the government has insecurities to attend to doesn't mean other state functions will be suspended. The ministry of defense functions independently and is different from the ministry of information and interior. Condemn the act all you want but that doesn't hold water.
It is true tackling insecurity should be a priority but it shouldn't affect other sectors.

This administration is a PR disaster. There are governments that have done far worse and still get strong support from majority of citizens because they find a way to tell people what they want to hear.

The NSA has ordered the immediate closure of all security outfits across the country. It might be a reasonable policy considering that membership of the security outfits is based on you belonging to the right ethnic group which might eventually be disastrous but for an administration that has been perceived to favor some ethnic groups over others, the policy will cause further hatred and divisions.

Wouldn't it be better instead to set up a National guard and incorporate the security outfits into it. That way, Federal government will have oversight on them to prevent excesses, state government will keep on funding and financing them and so on.
That is what NSCDC should have done but it failed.

Nigeria 'Satelite expired 2018'... Living on grace

I posted an article about a week ago and all these were addressed in the article. The plan of the government is to launch another satellite in 2021 but with dwindling revenue, slow economic growth and the effect of the pandemic on the economy and with other issues that far out-ranks satellite program, I doubt that would be possible this year. In the security sector alone, we need more fixed wing aircrafts, more attack helicopters, more transport helos, more reconnaissance aircrafts, more logistics aircrafts in the airforce. More tanks, more artilleries, more MRAPs, more APCs, army aviation, more IFVs and many other weapons in the army. The navy needs Frigates, corvettes, missile boats, patrol boats, helicopters, missiles and lots more. The police also has its needs too. The cost of making these equipments functional alone in terms of fuel is enormous not to talk about servicing, repairs and replacement. These is only in the security sector alone, we have health, infrastructure, commerce, education, power, and so many other sectors. There are also emergency needs; the government had to pump billions into the economy as relief funds to sustain the economy during and after the pandemic, purchasing vaccines for citizens and so on.
How much exactly is the country's revenue and what percentage of that revenue is going to the federal government that we expect them to be fully functional. The government wanted to increase revenue by increasing VAT a little bit and we all still protested against it! We are paying one of the lowest VAT in Africa.
Only Eritrea's rate is lesser than Nigeria's and that was after Nigeria increased it from 5% to 7.5%
And its not even like we still can't continue getting satellite images after the satellite stops functioning. All that is needed as a temporary measure is agreement with countries with robust space programs to share the images with relevant agencies in Nigeria. The functioning satellite isn't providing 24/7 coverage in the first instance so the effect of not having it functioning won't really be felt so far those agreements are in place.
I'm glad he has highlighted how the agency can generate revenue for the agency and government through communications satellites. He should write a reasonable proposal and present it to relevant people in government. If it is very profitable, I'm sure any government will be willing to even borrow to finance such.
NN came up with the idea of an hydrographic survey ship. It will serve much needed functions for the navy and also generate massive amount of revenue for the navy and government when they provide its services to countries that need it but can't afford the ship.
Ministry of Transportation came up with the idea of extending the rail lines from the coast of Nigeria into Niger Republic to make Nigeria a logistics hub of the country instead of Benin and generating an impressive amount in revenue from that.
They are partnering with Lagos state government and private sector to build one of the biggest deep seaport in west Africa thereby directing logistics traffic to Nigeria and generating more revenue.
The ministry of works came up with the idea of granting private entities tax breaks in return for construction of roads thereby reducing burden on government and cutting cost (private sector will do these things far cheaper than government), they are engaging private sector in other constructions and making sure revenue will be generated from roads. They are in the process of concessioning roads already completed and so on.

Jamb used to be a liability for federal government years ago, right now they are generating billions each year and that is after they've reduced the cost for the citizens by almost 50%.

These are the kind of things civil servants should be deliberating on.

I am happy that we are now talking about our problems as Nigerians and trying to find solutions but we are still not being sincere with ourselves. Years ago, we used to blame politicians, we moved on to blaming ethnic groups, we blamed colonialism and France, we even blame our neighbors at times. Today we are blaming the constitution. We will keep blaming others and the problems will keep getting worse until we tell ourselves the truth. Until we accept our own faults and accept we are parts of the problems.
Change the constitution a thousand times and we will keep on having the same problems in a thousand different versions. We are treating symptoms and complications when we should be struggling to tackle the root cause.
We are a very terrible people and until we change, we will keep wallowing in these self inflicted problems and blaming others.

I hope the news on the JF17 is true but at the same time, I'm not really happy with the decision. The priority should be getting IFVs, MRAPs, Tanks, artilleries, support vehicles and more for the army. These are the things that can bring about stability to many of the hotspots across the country. A single btr 4 is more meaningful than 4-5 when it comes to patrols and combats. We should be fighting smartly and not with brute force at these time.

The foreign reserves dumped by $1 billion 2 days ago. It may or may not be linked to weapons acquisition but I hope it is. We need to end the crisis in the northeast as soon as possible. Bandits in the north west will cower when the military is less busy and we can then focus on meaningful development as a country.
There is news of about $69 billion of looted Nigerian funds in US waiting to be reclaimed. The AGF and foreign affairs minister should swing into action to get it back so that they can be used for pressing needs.
