Great. I took time to go through the link. Very great people saying great things about the bible. But consider this particular verse from the same bible; 1 Samuel 15:2-3.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
What kind of a god instructs that? How can a book that supported genocide be called the best book? I could give you more evidence that murderers wrote the bible and it can never have been ordained by the God who created the universe.
Go through these before i tackle the issue of "genocide" in the bible.

The scientists believed in a God far above your religious god. The God they believe in is not the god of vengeance. It's not the god that says one thing and do the opposite. It's not the god of murderers like Moses, Samuel, David and Solomon. It's not the god of a warped minded Muslim who bombs people and claim he was divinely directed. It's not the god of your pastor who gets fat with tithes and offerings buying private jets and choice properties while claiming your Jesus is almost here. The God of the scientists is the God that revealed Himself to great prophets like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Maxwell and Einstein. The God of the scientists is a God that knows that we on earth are our greatest enemies and that the sooner we throw away religious books and face reality the better for us.
You can call me a dog. It's allowed. But I wonder what difference it makes between us and animals if we can't manage ourselves. We always excuse our laziness and ignorance to the will of God. That's why the white man will always be above us. Pathetic.

Oga nairaland is an atheist, and my best guess is that most of the mods/employees are
too (except maybe for islams section mods). I guess he knows what hes doing.
And its not like the "christian" topics that make front page on sundays are edifying.

Topics such as: 10 reasons for going to church, 10 types of church dancers, when the pastor pays for your wedding, why criticism of religion is important, reasons why guys go to church, 10 types of people you'll meet in church, Nigerian transgender talks about God and many other similarly shallow topics.

At least compared to islams friday topics, one can deduct that the mods are muslims.

As for the atheists, it beats me why there is no section for you guys yet. One can say the religion section is more of an "atheist section" in the real sense. Seeing the way y'all infest this section without control, (at least the sort of control in islams section), except maybe islam is less of a threat.

I dont think the power to pass accross atheistic messages to the mass totally lies with the mods neither do i know what is really going on but one thing is sure, the forum aint close to being pro-christian.

I suggest that an atheist section be created where you guys can bore the hell out of yourselves with you stale stories on how "nothing created everything", and a day be set aside to move some of your "dont believe in God topics" to the front page.grin

But seriously op, direct your questions to oga nairaland, not the mods.

The world is gradually going over to the dark side, insanity is fast becoming legal all over the world. People now want to do things the way they like with no one to call them to order. That pretty explains the reason for some of the negative comments above.

We keep stressing how corrupt our leaders are, but this generation is far worse.

Christianity Etc › Christians Engaging In Premarital Sexual Relations Before Marriage, Is It Okay? by winner01(op): 10:02am On Dec 27, 2015
Introduction
Common "wisdom" says that living together in a "trial marriage" is a good way to determine if couples are compatible before marriage. A companion paper, based upon scientific studies, shows that this idea is false. Many Christians seem to have bought into the secular idea that as long as one is "in love" it doesn't matter if couples live together (and engage in premarital sex). The problem is that many times "love" fails, and Christians end up moving from one relationship to another. This paper examines what the Bible says about living together before marriage, for those who claim to be Christians.

Biblical love isn't a feeling
Most people think that love is that elated, "high" feeling we get when we "fall in love." This kind of "love" is something that lasts typically less than a year. Most couples decide to live together during this period of time when their decisions are often based upon emotions and passions. According to the Bible love "rejoices with the truth... always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres... never fails". One will notice from this description that love isn't what you get from someone, it is something you give to someone. The Bible confidently says that love never fails, because as long as these things are done, love cannot fail. However, if we are interested in getting rather than giving, then selfishness always succeeds in shipwrecking a relationship.

Sexual relationships and the Bible
The doctrine of keeping sexual relationships within the bounds of marriage is so important that it is spelled out in the second chapter of the first book of the Bible (Genesis 2). The marriage covenant is spelled out in the original narrative that describes the meeting of the first man and first woman:

For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:24-25)

The Bible actually encourages married couples to enjoy their sexual relationships within marriage. The New Testament confirms that sexual relations within a marriage is not sinful. Paul says that those who marry have not sinned. The writer of the book of Hebrews states, "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure," indicating that sexual relations within marriage are "pure" and not sinful.

Old Testament laws about sex
The Bible has a lot of bad things to say about being a harlot. In fact, it was so frowned upon in Jewish society that, among all the laws in the Old Testament, spiritual unfaithfulness (idolatry) is compared to harlotry. These days, people tend to think of harlots as those who engage in multiple sexual relationships. However, the Old Testament indicates that engaging in even one sexual relationship before marriage (i.e., not being a virgin) makes one a harlot. Engaging in consensual sexual relations with a married person was a capital offense, and those who were found guilty (both the male and female) were executed. Consensual sexual relations between an unmarried man and unmarried woman resulted in the man being fined and required to marry the woman without the possibility of any future divorce. Essentially, there was no premarital sex, since once you were caught you were married.

New Testament laws about sex
The New Testament confirms the laws of the Old Testament. Specifically, adultery is condemned, even including mental adultery, incest, and homosexuality. Other sexual sins, including premarital sex, are condemned through a couple Greek words (the original language of the New Testament) that can refer to a number of sexual sins, depending upon context. These words are porneia and pornos, from which the English word "pornography" is derived. English Bibles will translate these words different ways, so it is important to know some of the ways in which the words are translated. For example, the New American Standard translates the words as "fornication" (e.g., premarital sexual relations) and sometimes as "immoral persons," which seems to be some kind of generic immorality, although it specifically refers to sexual immorality. Other English words used to describe premarital sex include "unchastity." The fact that these words refer to premarital sexual relations can be seen in the Pharisees answer to Jesus, where they insinuated that He was born of fornication. The severity of this kind of sin can be seen in the descriptions of what will happen to people who practice sexual immorality at the judgment.

The New Testament directly states that sexual activity is to be restricted to marriage in the book of Hebrews, where it condemns both adultery (engaging in sexual relations with a non-spouse while married) and fornication (engaging in sexual relations before marriage):

Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (Hebrews 13:4)

Conclusion
Premarital sexual relationships are strongly condemned in both the Old Testament and New Testament of the Bible. Therefore, Christians who engage in premarital sex are breaking God's laws and are not following Jesus Christ. Under such practices, God is not honored, and both yours and your partner's walk with Christ is hampered. In addition, one's witness for Jesus is nullified, since even non-believers know that living together before marriage is not what a Christian should do. If you are involved in this kind of relationship, you need to repent and start living according to biblical standards. It is not okay for a Christian to keep living a sinful lifestyle, including sexual intimacy before marriage.

God bless you

"Of all people surprised that I became an evangelical Christian, I'm the most surprised."

Just seven years ago, if someone had told me that I'd be writing for Christianity Today magazine about how I came to believe in God, I would have laughed out loud. If there was one thing in which I was completely secure, it was that I would never adhere to any religion—especially to evangelical Christianity, which I held in particular contempt.

I grew up in the Episcopal Church in Alaska, but my belief was superficial and flimsy. It was borrowed from my archaeologist father, who was so brilliant he taught himself to speak and read Russian. When I encountered doubt, I would fall back on the fact that he believed.

Leaning on my father's faith got me through high school. But by college it wasn't enough, especially because as I grew older he began to confide in me his own doubts. What little faith I had couldn't withstand this revelation.
From my early 20s on, I would waver between atheism and agnosticism, never coming close to considering that God could be real.

After college I worked as an appointee in the Clinton administration from 1992 to 1998. The White House surrounded me with intellectual people who, if they had any deep faith in God, never expressed it. Later, when I moved to New York, where I worked in Democratic politics, my world became aggressively secular. Everyone I knew was politically left-leaning, and my group of friends was overwhelmingly atheist.

I sometimes hear Christians talk about how terrible life must be for atheists. But our lives were not terrible. Life actually seemed pretty wonderful, filled with opportunity and good conversation and privilege. I know now that it was not as wonderful as it could have been. But you don't know what you don't know. How could I have missed something I didn't think existed?

Very Open-Minded
To the extent that I encountered Christians, it was in the news cycle. And inevitably they were saying something about gay people or feminists. I didn't feel I was missing much. So when I began dating a man who was into Jesus, I was not looking for God. In fact, the week before I met him, a friend had asked me if I had any deal breakers in dating. My response: "Just nobody who is religious."

A few months into our relationship, my boyfriend called to say he had something important to talk to me about. I remember exactly where I was sitting in my West Village apartment when he said, "Do you believe Jesus is your Savior?" My stomach sank. I started to panic. Oh no, was my first thought. He's crazy.
When I answered no, he asked, "Do you think you could ever believe it?" He explained that he was at a point in life when he wanted to get married and felt that I could be that person, but he couldn't marry a non-Christian. I said I didn't want to mislead him—that I would never believe in Jesus.

Then he said the magic words for a liberal: "Do you think you could keep an open mind about it?" Well, of course. "I'm very open-minded!" Even though I wasn't at all. I derided Christians as anti-intellectual bigots who were too weak to face the reality that there is no rhyme or reason to the world. I had found this man's church attendance an oddity to overlook, not a point in his favor.

As he talked, I grew conflicted. On the one hand, I was creeped out. On the other hand, I had enormous respect for him. He is smart, educated, and intellectually curious. I remember thinking, What if this is true, and I'm not even willing to consider it?

A few weeks later I went to church with him. I was so clueless about Christianity that I didn't know that some Presbyterians were evangelicals. So when we arrived at the Upper East Side service of Redeemer Presbyterian Church, I was shocked and repelled by what I saw. I was used to the high-church liturgy of my youth. We were meeting in an auditorium with a band playing what I later learned was "praise music." I thought, How am I going to tell him I can never come back?

But then the pastor preached. I was fascinated. I had never heard a pastor talk about the things he did. Tim Keller's sermon was intellectually rigorous, weaving in art and history and philosophy. I decided to come back to hear him again. Soon, hearing Keller speak on Sunday became the highlight of my week. I thought of it as just an interesting lecture—not really church. I just tolerated the rest of it in order to hear him. Any person who is familiar with Keller's preaching knows that he usually brings Jesus in at the end of the sermon to tie his points together. For the first few months, I left feeling frustrated: Why did he have to ruin a perfectly good talk with this Jesus nonsense?

Each week, Keller made the case for Christianity. He also made the case against atheism and agnosticism. He expertly exposed the intellectual weaknesses of a purely secular worldview. I came to realize that even if Christianity wasn't the real thing, neither was atheism.

I began to read the Bible. My boyfriend would pray with me for God to reveal himself to me. After about eight months of going to hear Keller, I concluded that the weight of evidence was on the side of Christianity. But I didn't feel any connection to God, and frankly, I was fine with that.
I continued to think that people who talked of hearing from God or experiencing God were either delusional or lying.
In my most generous moments, I allowed that they were just imagining things that made them feel good.
Then one night in 2006, on a trip to Taiwan, I woke up in what felt like a strange cross between a dream and reality.
Jesus came to me and said, "Here I am." It felt so real. I didn't know what to make of it. I called my boyfriend, but before I had time to tell him about it, he told me he had been praying the night before and felt we were supposed to break up. So we did. Honestly, while I was upset, I was more traumatized by Jesus visiting me.

Completely True
I tried to write off the experience as misfiring synapses, but I couldn't shake it. When I returned to New York a few days later, I was lost. I suddenly felt God everywhere and it was terrifying. More important, it was unwelcome.
It felt like an invasion. I started to fear I was going crazy.
I didn't know what to do, so I spoke with writer Eric Metaxas, whom I had met through my boyfriend and who had talked with me quite a bit about God. "You need to be in a Bible study," he said. "And Kathy Keller's Bible study is the one you need to be in." I didn't like the sound of that, but I was desperate. My whole world was imploding. How was I going to tell my family or friends about what had happened? Nobody would understand. I didn't understand.
(It says a lot about the family in which I grew up that one of my most pressing concerns was that Christians would try to turn me into a Republican.)

I remember walking into the Bible study. I had a knot in my stomach. In my mind, only weirdoes and zealots went to Bible studies. I don't remember what was said that day.
All I know is that when I left, everything had changed. I'll never forget standing outside that apartment on the Upper
East Side and saying to myself, "It's true. It's completely true." The world looked entirely different, like a veil had been lifted off it. I had not an iota of doubt. I was filled with indescribable joy.

The horror of the prospect of being a devout Christian crept back in almost immediately. I spent the next few months doing my best to wrestle away from God. It was pointless. Everywhere I turned, there he was. Slowly there was less fear and more joy. The Hound of Heaven had pursued me and caught me—whether I liked it or not.

Christianity Etc › David Cameron: Britain Is A Christian Country That Must Remember Birth Of Christ by winner01(op): 10:39pm On Dec 25, 2015
David Cameron has delivered his most explicitly Christian Christmas message yet, stating that Britain is a "Christian country" that must remember what the birth of Christ represents.

In his Christmas message the Prime Minister said: "As a Christian country, we must remember what his birth represents: peace, mercy, goodwill and, above all, hope."
It is because of the nation's Christian heritage that it has been so tolerant to non-Christians, he added.
"I believe that we should also reflect on the fact that it is because of these important religious roots and Christian values that Britain has been such a successful home to people of all faiths and none."

He also spoke about the traumas suffered by the millions of displaced people around the world, particularly in the Middle East, after a year of unprecedented horrors perpetrated by Daesh, or Islamic State.
"If there is one thing people want at Christmas, it's the security of having their family around them and a home that is safe. But not everyone has that. Millions of families are spending this winter in refugee camps or makeshift shelters across Syria and the MiddleEast, driven from their homes by Daesh and Assad."

Christians from Africa to Asia will go to church on Christmas morning full of joy, but many will be there in fear of persecution as well.
And nor was everyone in Britain in a good place to celebrate or enjoy the festival.
"Throughout the United Kingdom, some will spend the festive period ill, homeless or alone."

He paid special tribute to the thousands of doctors, nurses, carers and volunteers who are giving up their Christmas to help the vulnerable.
According to Crisis, the charity for the single homeless which has opened its doors to 4,000 people over the break, one in four people in Britain this Christmas will spend the holiday alone.
Cameron said: "Right now, our brave armed forces are doing their duty, around the world: in the skies of Iraq and Syria, targeting the terrorists that threaten those countries and our security at home; on the seas of the Mediterranean, saving those who attempt the perilous crossing to Europe; and on the ground, helping to bring stability to countries from Afghanistan to South Sudan.
"It is because they face danger that we have peace. And that is what we mark today as we celebrate the birth of God's only son, Jesus Christ– the Prince of Peace."

The message was criticised by the National Secular Society, who recently joined forces with Christian groups in a campaign to protect freedom of speech.
Campaigns manager Stephen Evans said it was "disappointing" to see Cameron once again speak of Britain being a Christian country.
"Christianity is just one influence among many that shape our ways of life, and Mr Cameron would do well to remember that we also have Enlightenment values and secularism to thank for the freedoms we enjoy today. David Cameron needs to appreciate that he isn't a leader of Christians, he's the Prime Minister of a diverse, multi-faith, increasingly non-religious nation. We look to political leaders for leadership, not theology, and this kind of language reveals him to be less than statesman like."

But there are different Christian bibles. The bible of which sect do you refer to?
The bible of the sect which constantly frown in the face of immorality, stands in the way of lawlessness and evil, emphasizes the kingdom of God and encourages the consciousness/fear of God.

You splitted my comment out of context, but still could not make a sense in your reply.

SMH, This is a very silly and dumb analogy, and obviously a telling of low level reasoning.
To see how stvpid this question is, tell me, if you have sex with your spouse, what are the odds she'll get pregnate and give birth to a human immediatly? Expecting to observe such large changes directly is nothing but a sign of dumbness. Evolution consists mainly of the accumulation of small changes over large periods of time. And for your information, Big Bang and Evolution are not the same.
This is a very embarassing and shallow reply, the most unintelligent reply ive read on nairaland in recent times, and im sorry to have engaged you.
Have a nice life.

legalization does not imply social acceptance, not in the least. that's wishful thinking.
You need to agree that insanity is gradually taking over the world.

slavery was illegal in america after 1865 yet blacks were still treated like second class citizens well into the next century (and many would argue they still are today in some areas). i predict it'll be at least another 50 years or so until homosexuals are actually accepted and face very little to no discrimination, even in american society. in nigeria, probably 100+ years.
Yeah, and i believe there are no grounds for not legalizing paedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality or incest. The can all be argued to be a sexual orientation or preference.
cloudgoddess:
as for atheists, even in america we are not fully accepted, although this is improving as the older, more religious generations die off and education increases. this graph shows percentage of people who said they would vote for an atheist, woman, catholic, etc. even today it is less than any other category.
lol. Its been improving since the 17th century
Voltaire, French infidel, died 1778
- said that within 100 years of his time, Christianity would be swept away from existence and pass into the obscurity of history.
-Yet 50 years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society used his house and printing press to produce stacks of Bibles.

Lets see how 100 years of your time will be
