13-year-old Wins Nigerian Mathematics Queen Competition

A teenager, Tochukwu Ndukwe, 13, from Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Leeja, Nsukka, Enugu State on Wednesday emerged the overall winner of the Nigerian Mathematics Queen Competition for 2018.

Saibu Medina from FESTAC College, Lagos, took second position while Olayiwola Adedagun, FGGC, Ketu, Osun came third at the competition.

115 female students of Junior Secondary School across the country participated in the Girls’ Mathematics Olympiad Competition, organised by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the ceremony, Prof. Stephen Onah, the director NMC said that the competition was aimed at encouraging and addressing the gap between males and females in the learning and teaching of Mathematics in the country.

Onah said the maiden edition with the slogan ‘Leaving No One Behind’ of SDGs Mathematics Competition and Award ceremony for the crowning of Nigeria Mathematics Queen was geared towards achieving SDGs 4.

‘‘The Nigerian Girl Student has been placed in a disadvantaged position especially in the area of education which has relegated her in the general scheme of things.

‘‘Being a victim of discrimination and male chauvinism, the girl-child hardly could compete educationally with her male counterpart.

‘‘This attitude has badly affected the girl child’s education in the area of enrolment in school, performance in class and her quest to progress educationally.

‘‘The girl child’s low interest in Mathematics is a serious concern to NMC and it is on this note that we encourage and boost the interest of the girl-student in Mathematics,’’ he said.

He added that one of the objectives of the competition was to stimulate enthusiasm in the learning of Mathematical Sciences among young Nigerian girls.

On her part, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, called on teachers and parents to work harder towards improving the learning of Mathematics sciences.

Orelope-Adefulire, who was represented by Dr Ify Nnamchi, called on relevant organisations to adequately fund the girl-child education to reduce street hawking among young girls in the country.

Nice one!

The finishing of this building looks top-notch, though i hope they have plans to plant trees and lawns where space permits!

There seems to be a general improvement in landscaping and cleanliness in the city as a whole, but as always, you can never have too many trees!

The one that got me green with envy was the report last week that said Ghana is poised to be THE FASTEST GROWING ECONOMY IN THE WORLD IN 2019! I was furious! angry

I said it didn't i? I warned a few years back that we will be busy bragging that we're the giant of Africa; have the biggest population in Africa; have the largest GDP in Africa....we'd be wallowing in this false sense of security and superiority, and wouldn't know when little Ghana overtakes us!

Nigeria is a basket case! This is what you get when a people who are ill-equipped to govern not only insist on governing, but also insist on filling all sensitive positions with their people!

The entire South is in a condition akin to colonization by the north. The earlier we realize this the better. The condition will not change through the constitutional democracy we practice today. The north have the population and also have a strategy to keep their voting population perpetually more in number than that of the south. They monitor and control the demographic proportions and will never let it tilt against the north. The only way forward is to unite and agitate for freedom just the way it was done against colonial rule of the British. As pointed out above northern elites are taking over Nigeria space. I recently spent some days in Ibom Resort/hotels in Akwa Ibom. I observed huge presence of northerners in the hotel under the auspices of government. I observed groups of them come and go and wondered if they are the only ones employed by the government these days.

You know what your problem is? You think everybody has emotional attachment to cleavages and distinctions based on states like you do!

I’ll tell you one last time that so long as Rivers state (created by haters of Ndigbo to try and divide us and limit our territory) does not see itself as Igbo and still harbours anti-Igbo sentiments (that reached its crescendo during the abandoned property saga)....for so long this happens, my interest in the states affairs will be cursory at best!

I am Igbo first before any stupid classification forced on me by some bigoted dickheads!

PoliticsRe: Few Pics From Imo State by Xander85: 3:21am On Apr 14, 2019
Ofuzo:
Imo state airport actually looks very nice. I don't see anything wrong with it. People always want to build big airports, but you build based on need. I went through PHC airport, and the whole place looked dead. The traffic in the airport did not justify the huge expense. I asked the people why, and they told me that it's only Lufthansa and Air France that is patronizing it. When you go to American and european airports, you will be amazed at how crowded the atmosphere is, with thousands of people arriving or departing. One time, while waiting for an interconnecting flight, I decided to observe what was going on outside. I took a sit near the window and was shocked with disbelief as I saw planes taking off and arriving at what seems like every 5 minutes. Same thing on their highways. Nigerian roads (nigeria really doesn't have highways) are mostly empty with hardly any traffic. American highways are chocked with thousands upon thousands of cars, so much so, that every hour is rush hour even at 2 am in the morning.

It's a totally and completely different world, with what you have in civilized soceities and what is obtainable in third world countries. If you'd have the chance to experience it, the contrast is MIND BOGGLING. There's absolutely no words to describe it.
Owerri airport can't have the kind of bustling activity you see abroad mainly because it doesn't have the economy to drive and sustain it. To start with, it would have to be an international airport, and Imo/Owerri state would have had to stand out for something INTERNATIONALLY....either tourism; industries; film/music; IT; conferences (for conferences, it would have to either be the capital of a country or be the 2nd major city besides the capital...kinda like you have with New York, Sydney or Durban).

Seplat should also build something similar in Anambra,
I think Nestoil have dis in plan
I've been hearing of the NESTOIL one for some years now.....i think theirs is a gas-fired power plant.

The main thing i want to see happen is supply of gas-fired power to industrial clusters in the five south-east states. Of course some cities like Aba already have their own dedicated power plant (GEOMETRIC), but i think its take-off being delayed by the dispute they have with Emeka Offors company.

When Obiano started his first term, there was talk of a company (i think its name was Seven or something like that) supplying gas for domestic and industrial use in Anambra. That fizzled out and nobody talks about it anymore or cares to ask what happened. That's how we are....projects are either delayed or forgotten about after much fanfare, yet nobody asks any questions and the gov't can then get away with breaking promises they've made! We make governance too easy for them!
PoliticsRe: NNPC And SEPLAT Raising 700million Dollars For Gas Plant by Xander85: 11:16pm On Apr 13, 2019
This should be the biggest multi-million dollar project in the south-east since 1999 (If you can think of a bigger one, i’d like to know)...and it’s by a son-of-the-soil! Just goes to show how the S-E has been neglected for decades!

I remember there was talk some years back of Shell planning to build an even bigger gas plant in the same LGA, but as with most plans for big ticket projects aimed at the S-E (that are not built by a Nwafor) it’s still on the drawing-board getting close to a decade now!

Kudos to the urbane gentleman Dr A B C Orjiakor!

PoliticsRe: Restructuring: The North Is Afraid Of Itself. by Xander85: 2:26pm On Apr 13, 2019
gidgiddy:
Anyone still talking about restructuring is wasting his or her time, the North will never let it happen. Restructuring will take away the current system that allows the North to politically and economically dominate Southern Nigeria

In other to restructure Nigeria, the constitution must be changed, to change the constitution, one must get a two third majority(67%) votes in the national assembly. Just the NW has as much reps as the SE and SS combined. The core North (NW&NE) have more reps than the entire south.

With the core North controlling 40% of the national assembly, even if one managed to get all the votes of the SW/SS/SE/NC, they still will not get enough votes to change the constitution. The core North will not entertain the notion of restructuring

So the only choice to the SW/SE/SS is the same choice Ojukwu faced in 1967.

Accept "one Nigeria" and the will of the North or seek your independence and freedom

So the SW/SE/SW should choose which these two choices they want and stop dreaming of restructuring Nigeria, it's never going to happen
Both you and Mekus both make salient points! I for one am ready to give ‘one Nigeria’ the benefit of the doubt and have another throw of the dice (ie, going along with Mekus suggestions), but the pragmatist and realist in me suggests the core muslim north wouldn’t let this happen, and this is where i’m forced to buy into your own thesis!

In my opinion,I think one of the first steps of chasing away those barbarians called fulani herdsmen is by developing all the areas they operate. For instance,if the SE was as developed as Lagos they would not have had the opportunity to operate. Those barbarians hide in bushes and the east has a lot of it. Have you ever heard them operate here. If there are no more bushes for them to hide and feed their herd of cattle's,they'd wonder far away. This is my opinion,no insults...
We still need our forests and game reserves!

It's not because of some stinking marauders from futa djalon and the fact Buhari can't guarantee our security in Alaigbo that we should clear all our forests and leave the entire landscape devoid of vegetation!
