a normal face mask does not protect against airborne infectious agents so it cant prevent the wearer from being potentially contaminated by a virus such as the coronavirus... if you are within six feet of a sick person who is coughing or sneezing, and wearing a normal face mask, then you can easily get infected with coronavirus (only a N95 mask can protect you in such scenario).

putting toilet paper over your mouth would only be useful if you have the virus and dont want to infect others, but not the way around. if an infected person is coughing in your direction and you are wearing a regular face mask (or even toilet paper over your mouth/nose) you will get infected very easily. you need to use a N95 respirator to be protected against catching the virus.
