kehers, not necessarily. If the host doesn't allow form scripts to run (as I have encountered with some hosts in the past), PHP et al becomes useless. In this case, he would have to add the cgi url (most likely a cgi script) to the "action" field of the form tag. What he/she needs to do is ask the host if they allow form scripting. If yes, then we can proceed with what language he uses. If no, then he should ask the host to provide the url to the cgi script, in which case he can use plain old vanilla html. |
wow! I visit duduradio with my (highly recommended) Firefox and get the "Your browswer no longer supported" message. When was this site made? 1999? ![]() |
hmmm, I am looking at http://www.elitewebbuilder.com/ right now and specifically, the spinning image underneath, "flash design". I am being hypnotized to go with their services. Mmmmmmm, aaaaaaaahhhhhh, the colors, so lovely (YIM clown emoticon using finger to flick lips in background) ![]() |
What is the site's url? I still maintain that you aren't doing your SEO right. I for instance, have sites that I work on, show relevant ads, a few days after I register the site with google adsense. Another possible problem: Depending on when you added the adsense stuff, google hasn't spidered your site yet. I always register my sites with google webmaster for quicker spidering 2) Words on your site are too generic (words that companies placing ads are probably not using or have no money to pay google to flag Again, I would look at the words you have on your site. You can also do a quick check to see what keywords your competition is using. Post the url. Perhaps I or others could help some more. |
well bug24, I am sure as you know, the way adsense ads work. Maybe they could only afford to pay for one round of masturbation ROFLMAO!! ![]() |
sometimes a quick turning off of your PC and letting it cool for a minute or 2 b4 rebooting has been known to do some tricks of its own too. Not saying it is the answer but if you haven't tried that already, please do. |
I stand corrected but I think that as far as the regular ads go, google goes by what the content on your pages. So if it sees a lot of say, "Nigeria", it will know to serve up ads that pertain to Nigeria. In other words, you can't have a site that deals with "how to make $1million" without being country-specific, to show up ads that pertain to Nigeria. Also bear in mind that there might not be that many Nigerian companies that can afford to advertise via google. For the google search boxes though, I believe you can specify what keywords you want google to flag as good or bad. Again, I think that is how it works but I stand corrected if not. |
sorry guys if this my post is putting sand in pplz garri cos, blv me, it isn't. On various posts, including this one, I am sitting at my desk reading the "hire me over the other guy" sales pitches and they sound like chyking lines, like romantic philosophies. ROFLMAO! Good luck to you all sha ![]() |

yusphul, if you don't know AJAX, learn it ![]() The more you know, the more your marketable skills increase in value. |
visit http://www.joomla.org/ and check what the latest version is. Then go to your host to see what they have. If both versions are the same, use the (easier) install process available from your host. If the host's is not current, then you will have to manually install joomla yourself by first downloading the zip file from joomla.org Thanks, |
u got it olushola, i saw with my korokoro eyes, a google ad for christian mastur. I wish i had captured a screenshot but I think others on here saw it too. How funny ![]() |
Ebook - electronic format of a book. A book you download from somewhere as opposed to a physical book you can feel and touch. Advantages: - no more carrying heavy books - you can get it from anywhere in the world, from the comfort of your home - you help save the environment, if you choose not to print such books - the onus is on the reader, not the publisher to spend money on paper used to print the books, thus saving publisher money. - as opposed to ordering a book on say, amazon, an ebook is available for immediate reading. Disadvantages - for ppl like me, I have to have a physical book or at the very least, print an ebook out. I can't read long text on screen. - if your computer gets a virus, bye bye book - if ebook is large and ur unfortunate enough to live in an area with slow bandwidth, it cd take forever to download. Thatz all i hv. Others r free to join. |
free market capitalism is the best path to prosperity (i bet olushola will come back with a post about why, if it's so good, the world is experiencing financial meltdown, for which I have a response ready to immediately respond with ) |
and what is "average" and by whose standard(s)? Just curious. In general, I would say, even if it means staying for a while without doing a site, if you know what you are doing, charge nothing less than $800 for a 5-page site. |
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1801152.ece The search giant has made its 2001 index available to web users. The Google 2001 web page shows its former logo which has changed very little over the last decade. The search results it calls up relate to current pages but at the end of the text for the link there is also a secondary link which takes you to the 2001 version of the listed page as provided by the Internet Archive. To search the 2001 index, visit http://www.google.com/search2001.html |
no yawa nuckecy. I just sent you a YIM add contact request |
Nice use of drupal ![]() A few pointers: 1) The norm is to have a left nav andor a top nav. I would do away with the right nav. You can always find a place for it under the left nav. 2) Computer labs page would probably be served better if you made all those photos into a slide show as opposed to what seems like an infinite scroll. 3) No form on the contact page. Those of us who are not in Nigeria but would like to send someone they know to the school might not have the time to buy a card to call, be at home during the office hours (given time zones), or mail a physical letter. 4) Call me a photos freak (they do speak a thousand words), but I think it would have been nice to associate the names of each faculty member with a photo. Makes it more personable and besides, many schools do it that way. 5) I think there is too much white space b/w your logo and the "African Uni" text. You need to bring them closer somehow or find other things you could use to fill up the space. 6) Identifying a school with "business opportunities" sort of rubs me the wrong way. Even if the client insists, I would try, if you haven't done so already, to discourage them. There are other words you could have used. Right now, I am thinking, "Invest in the future of our country" or something like that. 7) I think you should do something about your page names. Having a url with "node" doesn't cut it for me or the search engines. Doing a search for "aust" brought up a school in Australia. Doing a full search based on the name of your school brought up: http://www.aust-abuja.org/ at which point, I got confused cos both ur site and this one look the same. Thanks, |
yeah nuckecy, Joomla or any other CMS for that matter isn't for a 5-page site. It's for a site, in my opinion, that will either serve as an online community or a site like uniport where there will be access levels (for example, a teacher could have a page and upload assignments for students to download later, etc). Sure you could use it for a 5-page site but you will be at a mechanical disadvantage. In other news: nuckecy, I dey try reach you for longest time. I dig what you did for legacy and even left you a note hoping to see you when I was in Uyo lately but you no respond. Perhaps we could collab. Okay o. Yak aba ![]() |
exactly rickky, thanks. I have worked for a few companies with heavy traffic in my career. What they have done is studied when they have the least traffic (day and time range) and then do an update during that time. I have had to be around for deployments as early as 6am and as late as 11pm. They will put out such fixes on a few servers, do a quick test to make sure everything is okay and then deploy to the rest of the servers. Whereby there is an error, the beauty of deploying on a few servers is that not everyone will see it and they immediately roll back the new code and replace it with the old, while fixing whatever the problem might have been. Even CNN has developers in various time zones who can handle deployments, based on what I just stated above, for their respective sub-sites. In fact, they don't deploy on thursdays. How do I know? I interviewed with them and asked them that very question when it was turn to ask questions ![]() Lesson of the day: Sure, with the web you can do a deployment every second if you want. Having said that, wether you are new york times, CNN, Microsoft or Naijasoft, you have to monitor the traffic of your key demographic and then deploy when the traffic for that demographic is at its least. |
cmon, Let's re-examine hole 1, shall we? By fallacy of contradiction, I think your post fails. Let's focus on the first paragraph which to me sets the stage for the rest of your post: I just designed and developed the entire site www.futocomm.com again and I'm feeling funky with myself. Do I have the right to? Please preview the site and punch as many holes as possible. If I see the bolded section, why would I bother reading the rest? Granted I will admit I didn't read the entire thing, I hope you understand where I am coming from with respect to your english. Next time, you could say, "please review the home page as I will be using it as a template for the rst of the site" or something like that. Just my humble opinion anyways. In other news, I am happy I was able to point out the other stuff and that most importantly, you take them in good faith. |
chessguru, i guess you wdnt be good at law. I took the pains to state the time (along with other variables) I noticed the error because I knew ppl like you would say what is being said here. Read my first post again then reply again if you must |
deltree: Let's put ourselves in the shoes of a lay web surfer for a bit and then come back and tell us if you wouldn't close your browser 5 mins from entering your site: 1) I start off on your site with this expression: ![]() 1) I hit the URL but the "initialize" is taking forever on my slow speed connection. Perhaps a lite version should have been offered to people like me. My face now looks like this: ![]() 2) I just finished gritting my teeth through the "initialization" but it isn't obvious what is clickable so I start clicking at anything in the left, light gray portion and nothing happens, then after about 5 clicks, I say, "oh, there's the enter text. Let me click that" but again nothing happens. I think click the right side of the arrow, nothing happens. It's only after I click the arrow tip that I am taken to the next page. My face now looks like this: ![]() 3) I say to myself, "okay, i forgive him. Let me check his portfolio. It is possible that he has been so busy building sites to focus on his own site. For that, I can forgive him". I then click "portfolio". NOTHING happens. At this point, my face looks like this: I quickly close the window and go to another thread. p.s. It is a nice looking site, don't get me wrong. The effects on there might even get you laid. But you REALLY need to work on a better user experience. Not everything is obvious to the "common man" as it may be to you or others on this forum. |
IMHO, it is better than http://www.switchmaxdesign.com/ Having said that, here are my holes: 1) Contact page looks different from home page. y? Also spking of conact page, why not indicate to me which fields are mandatory, rather than let me submit first? better yet, y not implement front end validation? 2) I forgot my password but couldn't change it. y? click to find out: http://www.futocomm.com/members/forgotPassword.php 3) news page: based on colors chosen, it is sort of confusing to me to differentiate b/w the various links. A little top and bottom margins wouldn't hurt. That's my 30,000 foot view. |
All, He doesn't have to. He can give the job to someone in India or China ![]() Those guys are willing to code anything for peanuts. |
@poster, if you know so much about it, why not do it yourself? Taking it a step further, if your car breaks down and you take it to a mechanic, why not tell the mechanic what he is supposed to charge? It's called capitalism and the price of convenience. If you don't like the quoted price, you can either do it yourself, source for someone else or do it yourself. For me, this is how I would go about my pricing: 1) Gather log in details 2) Install product 3) Do customizations (layout, etc) 4) Create the different boards 5) Run tests to make sure everything is running okay That right there is at least 1 business day's worth of work (8 hours). Sprinkle in the human capital (my brains) and IMHO, I think 50K is a decent figure. Maintenance would also cost more. So, rather than give instructions, either give it to him, find someone else or do it yourself. |
You might want to run your site through a basic xhtml validator before you make claims like: We design W3C standards compliant CSS/HTML based websites. Designing with web standards means lower costs, reduced production time, and increased accessibility (reach more people, exclude fewer).I don't see how you would be able to convince someone like me (then again, I am not the average joe) that you can train me in web dev when your site doesn't practice what it preaches. Also, you might want to get rid of the face in the header. Looks scary, for real. |
needless to say amistycrissy, you will need to develop thick skin to survive here ![]() |
smart There is something called, "above the fold". For an example, take your local newspaper and fold it in half. What you see from the to to the middle is "above the fold". how does this apply to your site? read on. When developing the layout of a site, you need to take this into consideration. Many surfers, including myself, will only use what they see "above the fold" to determine if they scroll "below the fold". That is why you want to put your most important pieces of a site at the top. In your case, you make it worse in that there is that black background that gives the impression that there is nothing below it. As a matter of fact, I thought there was nothing below it until I looked to the right and noticed I still had some scrolling to do. Perhaps what you have below the black background is the most important piece of the puzzle, who knows? You need to address that. Thanks, |
I will give you theory. You can visit a place like w3schools for the rest: CSS is a way of separating presentation from content. Content would be your HTML and presentation would be stuff like "<strong></strong>" for example. By separating content from presentation, you get many advantages: 1) You stay clear of tables (unless for tabular data of course) which helps reduce page download times 2) Your code looks cleaner (how many times have you had to implement nested tables? How hard was it for you forget to close a TD for instance and how much time did it take you to find the forgotten TD?) 3) You code to web standards which implies that your pages will look the same irrespective of browser or PDA. 4) Your code is more abstracted and object-oriented (due to the separation of content from presentation - easier to maintain) That's pretty much it. As I said, if you visit a place like w3chools, you will see examples of how to implement. Others are free to add to this. Thanks. |
