[quote author=Delta007 post=63843189]What are you getting? What is reasonable to you? Your insurance quote depends on a number of factors including your driving experience, vehicle model and city/province.

Thanks for your response. I am getting $390. I live in Toronto and am getting this high quote because my g2 is less than a year . I was hoping to get like $250

Lmao. Well to be honest, I would too. The detergent in Canada are mostly in liquid form in gallons and they don't foam like Naija Ariel grin

Also except you're using brands like Oxy, the stain remover ability of some of their detergents is very poor.
Haha. It's funny @mummyjaygirls brought the detergent issue up. I had the same concerns when I landed here. Went round Wal-Mart more than 6 times finding powder detergent to no avail. Hubby kept telling me there is only liquid. I didn't agree. Fast forward to now I barely remember ever using powdered detergent. I also use Oxy. I also brought a lot of powdered milk from naija for my kids. Once we exhausted it, I switched to the regular liquid 1 and my kids had no problem with it. Same with seasoning. It's funny how you think you can't survive without some things and after a while it feels like u never had those same thing.

How do you get on the wait list? Do you just apply to the nearest daycare or any one at all?
Daycare waitlist and subsidy waitlist is different . Every daycare has a maximum number of children they can take . In my case I had to wait till sept as the daycares I contacted were filled up and promised to have space once the preschoolers moved to school by sept.
The subsidy waitlist is with the govt helping u to pay part of the childcare fee if you qualify. Check out the link below. You can also use the subsidy calculator to have an idea of how much you will be paying daily which in my case was very accurate even before I got approved.
https://secure.toronto.ca/children/subsidy/

does the child care subsidy pay all of your child care fees where you live? It doesn't on my end. It pays a portion and what you get approved for is dependent on your income. There is also no waiting list here.
@vcole, I live in Toronto so yes there is always a wait list for both subsidy and also at the daycares. I guess it differs with each province .

See as the child care cost stands out like hulk!!!
Please note that for childcare it varies on family income as stated after filing tax. I pay 525 monthly with government subsidy . I also have a friend that just moved here and pays $0 cos she just started working. With child care it's important to note that there is always a wait list with govt subsidy so try as much as possible to get on the list asap. Cos I had to wait for 4 5 months to get approved.

Please never tick NO. It is a criminal offense to lie on a landing card. If in doubt, please watch Border Security. Channel 132 on Saturdays and Sundays. It is better you tick yes and if they pull you aside for secondary inspection, your card had indicated a Yes. Never never lie on a landing card. When I landed I simply told the lady the list of food items and all she asked was are you expecting more bags and I said No. Sefini. You are cleared. If you lie on the card and they randomly select you for secondary inspection and see all those food, you face up to 10 thousand dollars penalty and prosecution. God will save you if your foodstuff esp those fishes now have insects.... never lie on a landing card, everyday for the traveller (thief) one day for the Border Officer (farm owner)
@Ballerz thanks for the info. I sure have learnt . From past experiences i get searched and some food stuffs get thrown away but trust me , getting the food stuffs thrown away is no big deal compared to paying such a ridiculous fine.

By october...we might experience the first snow of the winter season and its always a good idea to invest in winter tires. I just got some off kijiji for $200 (tires on rim). They still have about 90% life left on them. These sets of 4 without the rims would easily cost close to $500 when purchased at fountain tires and the likes.

Also...some household items can be purchased for less at dollarstores instead of walmart or superstores...e.g a tin cutter could be sold at the dollar store for $2 and similar item could be sold at

.
.superstores for close to $10.

if i remember other cost savings tips..i would update.

Yes o. I would say just common hands-on skills..e.g i visited my friend at his home last month and found him replacing two doors in his house...He bought the door from home depot..got some tools and went on youtube to view installation videos. He actually did a good job.

i also replaced my microwave fuse some days ago myself.. I called a technician to help fix the microwave which is installed in a kitchen cabinet...Even though the fuse itself cost just $6. He billed labour at close $150 becuase the microwave was i stalled on a riggid frame above the cooker...He said he would need to unscrew some tight reaching bolts too. I have never done something like that before..but oh well...we learn everyday.

I also replace all the light bulb in my cars myself..i havent done this before too, but when the dealer gave me a quote of $70 to replace a bulb that only cost $10...i had to put on my thinking caps.

Buying a snake to unclogg blocked toilet and sinks could save alot of money instead of calling a plumber. These guys could sometimes charge up to $400 to unclogg a toilet.

I also recharged my car AC myself. Thanks to youtube...
I agree to this 100%. It's diy oo. For the ladies moving here soon buy enuf wigs oo. Braids no be joke o. Except you can afford to pay $80 for Ghana weaving/ $120 for braids. As a housewife for now I can't afford it . I learnt on youtube how to braid my hair myself and actually did a decent job. Bought 3 different human hairs and converted to wigs. Also made 1 braid wig in naija before moving.

Thanks yetty. Just a few follow on question in respect of the highlighted portion:
1. What happens if I am not looking for work at all? Am I then ineligible to apply for the subsidy?
2. What happens if I do not find work after 60 days, but can show that I have been actively looking?

Thanks in advance.

Mrs. O, mycanadianfling blog

Well to qualify for daycare /subsidy , you have to be working for minimum of certain hours in a week i think 30hrs or schooling. Otherwise, u won't qualify. Again am speaking based on experience in Toronto not sure of the requirements in other provinces . If u don't get a job within the stipulated tim,e you will be back to the waitlist.

Please are you in toronto or neighbouring city? then what is your next step of action from toronto airport if you are looking to stay at mississauga and you need accomodation from day 1. Are they commuter buses from airport to mississauga? is there a place one can stay temporary while looking for accomodation?. i want to also ask how much one room apartment goes for in mississauga and estimate of how much one person will be spending on living expenses (all inclusive) monthly.
Yes am in toronto not sure of commuter buses cause I was picked at the airport but and am not sure cost of housing at Mississauga too .Might be about $500-$800 though Your spending on living expenses will be determined by the number of people in your household.

Thanks ma'am. I definitely found this helpful, and consistent with some tidbits of advice we had gotten earlier.

For the daycare which you mentioned is almost free (after subsidy), how many days a week is this for? And for how many hours a day?

Mrs. O, mycanadianfling blog
The way the subsidy work is they use taxes filed after a year of working to calculate how much you should pay in a day for daycare . So if you just moved here and have not worked for a year, you probably wont pay anything as said by a friend i made here. As for me , hubby has been working here for a year so we will have to pay some amount. Although the subsidy office gives you 40-60 days to find a job once your child starts daycare.

Hello Everyone,

I am new on this platform but will like to render advise to the mums relocating to Canada soon as i moved from naija to toronto about 4 months ago. I have a 6 year old son and a 2 year old daughter. Kids cant start school until they turn 4, so for mums that intend to start work once they get here,
*make sure you immediately register your child in the daycare as most day cares have a very long wait-list .
*Also register your child for subsidy as the government subsidizes the daycare fee which for new comers its mostly free the first year . This also has a wait-list that might take a months.
*For Pr holders , health is free but you are only entitled to a health card after being a resident for 3 months . So if you or your kids have any medications you have been on back home in naija please bring it along or else you will pay a doctor's fee of $65-$100 depending on the walk-in clinic . The doctor's fee isn't inclusive of medication.
*If you are coming in the summer, try to visit the nearest community centres near you as they have a lot of fantastic programmes for adults and kids e.g drop-in for early years, parent relief ,etc.

This is all i can remember for now. I hope someone on this platform finds this helpful .

I think the fact that only one draw was done in June helped speed up the current processing of eAPRs. June AORs are especially lucky as they seem to be benefiting most due to d speed at which their files have moved. If this momentum is improved or sustained I see most June AORs getting PPR in 8weeks or less.

Another theory I have to explain dis new trend could be that maybe there is an executive order to give more priority to FSW-outland applications over other streams. CEC stream used to have the fastest processing time but now it takes at least 2 months for them to even pass medicals. A lot of CEC applicants are seriously complaining to CIC because they are used to faster processing times but the response from CIC to them is not to expect medicals passed in less than 2 months. On the other hand I got medicals passed in just 23 days post AOR and several other FSW-OUTLAND applicants as well.

Probably the govt needs the influx of fresh economic migrants over those already inland. Imagine the amount of money we are going to carry to Canada as POF and what it will do to their economy. Then in the long run comes the real value which is our skills and how we will impart positively on the nation's production of goods and services. Everybody wins in the end. These are really interesting times.

May God bless our Canada dreams.
