Authority1o1: 12. The Russians arrived 12 days late to the 1908 Olympics because they were using the wrong calendar: Over 2,000 years ago, Julius Caesar promoted the use of the Julian calendar, a 365-day calendar that didn't account for leap years. Eventually, the calendar fell out of sync with the seasonal equinoxes, and holidays—like Easter—didn't land where they should. Finally, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII mandated that Catholic nations switch to a new Gregorian calendar that solved the problem.
But for many countries, including Russia, the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian took centuries. As a result, in 1908, the Russians missed the first 12 days of the Olympics, which was hosted in London, because they were still using the Julian calendar. The country finally changed over in 1918 after the Bolsheviks took control. Fun bonus fact: Greece, the country where the Olympics were born, was the last nation to make the switch in 1923. Ethiopia are yet 2 switch |

Bloghomies: Trust me, this thread is going to be filled with overwhelming negativity.
But before you conform, take a moment and dwell on the monumental feats of the giant of Africa.
There are countries far worse, where they live in swamps and eat one another.
Yes, we're behind. But at least, we're alive and better than so many out there, in the deep of Africa with no access to the outside world.
When you travel out, and see things, you'll be grateful for the air you even breath. Oh, how much we belittle this wondrous element.
Your dream should be to work on yourself, to become better. A better you, will create a better nation.
Peace! The same thing I do tell people. At least we can fend for ourselves here. There are some countries that depend on donation from UN and Charity organisations before they can feed,at least this country is still manageable... Let us manage our suffering and smiling |

Honestly when you visit Abakaliki, without sentiment you will be surprised at the level of development going on there. You will be more surprised when you check their debt and their allocation. Both are at the bottom of the table. Then how does he get the money for those gigantic projects. Most are already completed. Sincerely speaking,Ebonyi state has a very large quantity of limestone.I think they are the state with the highest limestone deposit,so the money might be coming from there. |
