Professor Barth Nnaji has become a high profile casualty in the crisis in Nigeria’s power sector as President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday “accepted” his resignation as the Minister of Power with immediate effect. The development opened a new chapter in the standoff between unions of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and the federal government over modalities for fully privatizing the electricity sector.

A statement by Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati said President Jonathan thanked Prof. Nnaji “for his services to the nation under the present administration and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”

Nnaji’s resignation comes barely two weeks after the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) demanded his resignation citing “vituperation on the workers in the sector. NUEE also accused the then minister of engaging in fraudulent activities in the Power Sector and misinforming Nigerians to the extent of putting them under tension unnecessarily. shocked shocked shocked

The union had also demanded explanation from Nnaji in connection with his role or activities in relation to issues like:

N395m collected from PHCN allegedly for the Media, for 3 months; << 40-man laptop squad no doubt got some rich pickings from this largess grin >>
N280m collected from PHCN allegedly for Nigeria Army;
N200m collected from PHCN allegedly for Unknown Project in the Power Ministry;
N86m collected from PHCN allegedly for a bullet -proof vehicle;
N3m collected from PHCN and donated to Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT); and
Employment of 20 people in Enugu Zone of PHCN who are his kith and kins as staff two years after the closing date of casual employment and close of PHCN biometrics exercise.

“He should also explain to Nigerians why we have been collecting Pension and Gratuity from 1972 till June 2012 based on 25 percent, and why his reform tends to short change the workers,” the statement said, adding that the development confirms the fears of workers in the power sector that Nnaji’s reform is aimed at strangulating workers.” A statement by the union leadership had said.



The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria accepted today the resignation of Barth Nnaji, the hitherto Minister of Power.

The resignation is reportedly connected to the revelations first premiered by Business Day which linked the former cabinet member to an underground bid for Afam Power Station.

Nnaji revealed to the National Council on Privatiation last Friday that his company, Geometrics, was a shareholder in a company that bid for the Afam Power Station.

Afam Power Station has an installed capacity of 775 Megawatts which is 18% of the country’s current total power generation.

The revelation came as a surprise, although many Nigerians were already aware that the privatiation of PHCN was simply an unbundling of the country’s power assets to the cabal.

However the undoing of Mr. Nnaji may have come about as a result of the dispute between himself as minister and PHCN employees.

The PHCN employees were embittered by Nnaji’s refusal to pay them adequate terminal benefits running into hundreds of billions of Naira. The conflict-of-interest being he would not want an asset he was planning to acquire to be hugely indebted to the soon-to-be disengaged PHCN staff.

Yujin you are right about the igbo infiltration in Bonny as far back as it's early kings, but wrong about them being Igbo from inception.

During the migration of the brothers, namely Alagbariya, Opuamakuba, Asimini & co, from the Central Delta "Ijaw" they took the hinterland root, through this journey, they stopped at these areas azuogu, azumini and finally settled at Ndoki, they must have spent years there, during that time they inter married, mixing both the ibani culture and the igbo. After some years they decided to find a land suitable for their occupation as they were fishermen in nature, on leaving Ndoki they needed a leader for the expedition, according to oral history during these era leadership was based on age, that was how Okpara Ndoli, the only Ibo name that appeared in the Bonny early kings emerged. It was by his age that he became the first ruler of the group. He died at Orupiri not too far from Bonny. Opuamakuba was made the next leader as the oldest among the brothers, later Alagbariya as the one who sited the town Bonny. It was this migration mix that brought about the Igbo speaking in Bonny as a lot of Igbos migrated with them.

The truth is the Ibani was what they held as their original language and kept to it in their Culture, customs and tradition.

You Ijaws can be very funny most of the times. Take this comment of yours and show it to a neutral person and ask him if by your comment, Igbos are suppose to be called 'infiltrators' in Bonny. I guess Okpara Ndoli was escorting them to go and find a new settlement because he wasn't man enough to find a new settlement. Only Ijaws were created to find new settlements while Igbos were created to escort them.

I guess the years they spent at Ndoki areas among Ndoki Igbo people wasn't sufficient to 'enculturate' them if I'm to borrow your peoples' word which they always use when talking about King Jaja. Do you now see how you sound?
Anyway, your story makes no single sense because the migratory route you painted looks far fetched. If I was to provide you with a map of the Niger Delta Basin and ask you to show me the route the three men took to arrive at Ndoki area, I doubt you'll be able to connect it.
We all can see how you Ijaws have been struggling to connect yourselves with Ndoki because that's what history credits to the founding of Bonny. The Igbo dialect in both Bonny and Opobo is purely Ndoki and not another Igbo dialect. Unfortunately for you guys, you can't connect except through one means which is that Ijaws came later to Bonny and mix up with the Ndoki founders of Bonny and intermarriage happened there. Igbo language has been recorded in Bonny as far back as the 1700s with records available to prove it. It wasn't a language of slaves or infiltrators. It was the language of the founders.
In the same vein, Opobo was founded by King Jaja- another Igbo man and majority of those who made up the 14 war canoe houses that followed him to Opobo came from Bonny which was Igbo speaking and Igbo dominated at the time. This makes Opobo another Igbo town if I was to be strict like some of you Ijaws are touting about.
Now, here's my position about the matter. Okpara Ndoli, an Igbo man and his group might have founded Bonny and became the first ruler of the town but some Ijaws might have joined him and over time formed an amalgam of people who were mostly Igbo speakers but with the Ijaw dialect surviving at the background. Kingship might have alternated overtime between Igbos and Ijaws and it wasn't a problem because no one cared about ethnic group those days.
No one should try to colour their history for them as the INC and IYC have been trying to do for ages. Leave them to decide for themselves what they want. Both Igbos and Ijaws should be welcomed in the land and Isaac Adaka Boro's crimes and killings of those he felt were Igbos among the people there should be spoken openly for the world to hear and know.
Bonny's story is the same with that of many communities in Okrika LGA and Eastern areas of Kalabari territory. Igbos and Ijaws were never meant to be enemies due to the level of our interaction back in the days but unfortunately we are where we are now. I chose not to point fingers now because it will only keep us stagnant without any gain like it has done for over 50years.
A peaceful solution about these areas can be reached without us sharing the same country but if the Ijaws and the INC prefers the present position of Igbo hating, suppression of pro-Igbo groups and denial of Igbo rightful status in those areas, they will have to prepare for the inevitable.
There are records to back up all the claims I made here so know that I'm writing out of solid conviction.

We must learn to consciously report exactly what a person says or does so they're not misrepresented and lead to further problems. Nigeria has been guilty of always deliberately misrepresenting what Igbo individuals say, write or do to use against those individuals and the rest of us.
You should check the definition of threat according to the British or Oxford Dictionary. It is simply defined as the declaration of intention to inflict pain, harm or misery on a person or people. The igwe's comment doesn't qualify as a threat in any way.
I wrote all of these to set the records straight so all our people don't ignorantly buy into the claims that he made a threat. No intention of harm was contained in his statement. 3. The Nigerian Police, Army and EFCC go to any length to attack and arrest anyone suspected of any crime except fulani terrorists whose hideouts are well known. Some how, the Nigerian army can't seem to storm those hideouts. Who are they deceiving?
4. Fulani terrorists invade a village, kill and drive off the people and then settle there. After they rename it and continue to stay there while the survivors are left to languish in IDP camps. The Nigerian army somehow can't storm those villages to kill off those fulanis and allow the people return home. Everyone just moves on as though nothing happened. Nigeria has the highest IDPs in the world without being officially in a civil war.

First, it was Sheik Naik- the Indian fugitive that came to Nigeria and now, a Hamas leader. Expect an ISIS leader to come to Nigeria soon. The docile Nigerian Christians continue to watch doing nothing as the message is being spread about Nigeria being an Islamic contraption. CAN has proven to be weak and ineffectual shepherds in capable of protecting the sheep under their directives and protection. Shame on them.

Yes, Nigerians were made to suffer because the exact reason for forming Nigeria was never for the benefit of the indigenous people. The British that created Nigeria did so to have a unworkable contraption where they would have access to the resources of the land in perpetuity without regards to the lives of the inhabitants. They chose the fulanis who they knew very well weren't indigenous and handed power to them and equipped them with weapons.
Fast forward 64years later, Nigeria is exactly where they want it to be. Instead for the blacks within to seat in a round table and discuss how to undo what tje British cobbled together, they are more interested in fighting one another over some frivolous reasons while all of them are drowning.
I've always said that the next generation will curse this generation for doing nothing to create a better future for them. It isn't late yet to divide Nigeria and start afresh. It is better to do it today and create hope for their respective youth because this Nigeria is dead already.

Wrong answer. Non of them were elected presidents. They were all military men who got to the seat of power through unconventional means.
In the history of the evil contraption, no single President or Senator has ever resigned for any reason. Only one minister has ever resigned but note that ministers are appointed not elected.
In Nigeria, politicians occupy positions of power to complete their tenures and never to provide solutions to the teeming problems of the people. After Nigeria breaks, the emerging countres must learn never to allow the same things repeat in their various countries.
