PoliticsBuhari’s Govt Is Shameless For Talking About 2019– Junaid Mohammed by zakim(op): 11:53pm On Nov 22, 2016
Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has described the government of President Muhammadu Buhari as shameless for saying Nigerians will rally behind the President in 2019.

Recall that the Presidency, Monday, dismissed suggestions that the masses will desert President Buhari in 2019, saying it’s unfounded and utterly ridiculous.

Presidential spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, who was reacting to allegations by a former Congress for Progressive Change, CPC member, Alhaji Buba Galadima that President Buhari would be abandoned by the people in 2019, asserted that “ordinary Nigerians are the backbone of his (Buhari’s) mandate and the only reason he ran for the office is to protect them against the rapacious merchants of corruption, who have held Nigeria back for decades.

” However, reacting, Mohammed, said: “It is very unfortunate and shameless that a government that is yet to do anything is already talking of 2019. It is very unfortunate that a party like APC that is fast becoming moribund is already talking of 2019 when they have nothing to show for the four years Nigerians gave them. This development shows they are power-hungry, hypocritical and corruption-ridden.

“This entire 2019 discussion is ridiculous. I believe a government that has performed will rely on its performance before being considered for another four years in office. We are not even in the middle of the four-year term given to them and they are already talking of 2019. This is an unfortunate development and it shows the ineptitude of the government. For a man that has led us into the worst recession ever and has got nothing to show Nigerians since he assumed office to be talking of 2019, shows how shameless the government can be.”

PoliticsJustice Ngwuta Hid N27m, 3 Cars In Ebonyi Home – FG by zakim(op): 5:02am On Nov 22, 2016
The trial of suspended Supreme Court judge, Justice Sylvester Nwali Ngwuta commenced yesterday before a Federal High Court in Abuja with the judge being granted bail on self-recognisance.

The Special Prosecutor appointed by the federal government, Charles Adeogun-Philips, had earlier opposed the bail saying Justice Ngwuta hid N27 million in his bathroom and three exotic cars in his Abakaliki, Ebonyi State home.

Justice Ngwuta was arraigned on 16-count charge bordering on money laundering, concealment of property, and obtaining multiple travel passports. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Adeogun-Philips had also objected to the bail, arguing that the judge will interfere with evidence and potential witnesses in the trial.

But Justice John Tsoho in granting the judge bail on self-recognisance worth N100 million, held that the submissions of the prosecution were based on fear since there was no proof before the court that his administrative bail was revoked on account of such interference.

The prosecutor had narrated how Justice Ngwuta made a call to his associate in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State to remove the N27 million and the three exotic cars shortly after he was released by the Department of State Services (DSS) on October 9.

He said the judge was charged in count 10 with having multiple identities, since he was found with four valid passports, two of which are diplomatic passports.

“The Immigration Office investigations showed that the defendant declared two of those passports lost,” he said.

“My lord, we are confronted with such acts of dishonesty while on administrative bail. He was using them concurrently and interchangeably. We object to the defendant being released on self-recognisance,” he added.

Arguing the bail application, defence counsel Kanu Agabi (SAN) pleaded with the judge to release the defendant on self-recognisance based on the provisions of Sections 32, 158 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and because of his social standing.

“The defendant bears a title that nobody can take away from him. He is more anxious to take away the stain from his person,” Agabi said.

According to the charges filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Muhammed Umar Etsu, various sums including thirty five million, three hundred and fifty eight naira (N35, 358, 000.00) and twenty five million, nine hundred and fifteen British Pounds (£25, 915) were retained by the judge on October 8, 2016.

The prosecution further alleged that between 2014 and 2016, the judge transferred funds totaling $1 million in both Naira and US Dollars to one Linus Chukwuebuka, a building contractor.

The judge was also alleged to have made a false statement to the Passport Office of the Nigerian Immigration Service concerning his date of birth for the purpose of procuring an additional Diplomatic Passport.

The offences are contrary to Section 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2012 (as amended) and Section 10 (1) (a) of the Immigration Act 2015.

The case has been adjourned to December 7 for hearing.

PoliticsEbonyi To Ban Sale Of Foreign Rice by zakim(op): 8:13pm On Nov 21, 2016
The Ebonyi Government has said it was concluding plans to enforce a ban on the sale of foreign rice in markets and other outlets in the state.

Governor David Umahi made the disclosure when participants of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Senior Course 39, Jaji, visited him in Abakaliki on Monday.

The governor said the order would soon be enforced to ensure that the residents patronised home-grown Ebonyi Rice.

“I will personally lead a task-force, consisting of the State Executive Council members to various markets and enforce the order.

“Individuals who are selling the produce will provide certification of its quality because most of the rice brought into the state is not parboiled.

“Any rice that is not parboiled after six months turns to chaff as most of them brought into the country stay for about 10 years before being imported.

“The rice then becomes poisonous and we have banned cooking of non-Ebonyi rice inside the state’s Government House, hotels and public functions.

“The Ebonyi rice still presents its unique taste even when cooked without meat and we will give you some quantities for attestation,” he said.

PoliticsDon’t Postpone Ondo Election, APC Tells INEC by zakim(op): 5:20am On Nov 21, 2016
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as “bizarre” the request made by faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State.
The faction cited the internal crisis within the PDP as its reason for the request.

The APC, in a statement issued, yesterday, by its National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, said that the PDP, in continuation of its “wild conspiracies on the Ondo governorship election” also accused the APC of colluding with the judiciary, INEC and security agencies to “manipulate” the outcome of the Ondo State governorship poll.
The statement said that the crisis within the PDP and the choice of who should be its governorship candidate were self-inflicted, stressing that the PDP cannot hold Ondo State and the country hostage on account of its internal crisis.
“Instead of making the ridiculous election postponement request on INEC, the PDP should focus and redirect its energy towards putting its house in order,” it said.
“The APC is not party to any scheme to subvert justice and undermine the very progressive and participatory democracy which the APC fiercely stands for.”
The statement called on the INEC to ignore PDP’s request and concentrate on conducting free, fair, credible and transparent election.
It said: “The Ondo electorates are wise and will vote for the candidate with a proven track record of performance. A vote for the tested, trusted and credible APC governorship candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, will bring about massive multi-faceted development which has eluded the state.”

PoliticsNo Sharia Bill Before National Assembly— Dogara by zakim(op): 6:00am On Nov 20, 2016
As criticisms continue to trail the alleged attempt to smuggle-in sharia law into the nation’s Constitution, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, yesterday said it was not true that sharia law had been introduced into the Constitution through the back door.

Dogara specifically said that there was nothing like sharia law being smuggled into the Constitution as alleged. Instead, the Speaker said, a member introduced clauses which sought to include criminal aspects of Sharia in the constitution. He explained that the clause had been referred to the Special Adhoc Committee on the Review of the Constitution, adding that no such bill has yet emanated from the Committee.

Speaking at a reception organised in his honour alongside Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir David Lawal, by the Northern Nigerian Christian Politicians in Abuja, Dogara, refuted reports alleging that the House has before it a Sharia bill.

According to a statement issued by the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, on the controversial introduction of sharia law in the constitution, he maintained that by the provisions of the standing rules of the House, bills on constitution amendment were referred to the Special Adhoc Committee on the Review of the Constitution which has the sole prerogative to introduce constitutional amendment bills in the House.

The speaker, who took time to explain the rigorous and cumbersome processes of amending the Constitution to the gathering, added that before such a bill could be passed into law, at least two-third of members of the National Assembly would have to vote yes to it before it will be transmitted to the 36 states’ Houses of Assembly for endorsement.

He further explained that voting on such clauses were done with individual members voting for or against each clause before it will be passed and that if any clause failed in either of the two chambers, such amendment was considered “dead” and as such would not be voted upon by the other chamber as doing so will amount to waste of time and an exercise in futility.

PoliticsSheriff Using Delay Tactics To Destroy PDP – Staff Forum by zakim(op): 9:49pm On Nov 19, 2016
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat staff under the aegis of Staff Welfare Forum have accused a factional chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff of using delay tactics to "destroy" the party.

The staff said Sheriff in his effort at delaying the resolution of the current leadership crisis bedevilling the PDP has resorted to using the judiciary to delay quick dispensation of justice.

A statement signed on Saturday by over 40 staff of the party said the actions of Sheriff and his team showed that he is in alliance and working for the APC in order to make Nigeria a one-party state.

"We the PDP staff therefore call on the Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC) and Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN) and the entire Nigerian Judiciary as the third estate of the realm to live up to its responsibility to save Nigeria's democracy and treat the PDP leadership matter before them with utmost urgency and dedication that it requires.

"This is especially to enable enough time for the PDP to campaign with other political party in the election and participate actively in the Saturday, November 26, 2016 governorship election in Ondo State.

"Any member of the party no matter how highly placed working against the Convention resolution must tread softly or face the party's disciplinary committee which has the power to invoke the extant rules and take necessary measures against such erring members.

‎"The National Secretariat staff of the party declared that they are all in support of the resolution of the May 21, 2016 National Convention of the party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, establishing the National Caretaker Committee headed by Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi.

"It is sad to say the least how some of our party leaders are working tirelessly with a view to decapitate and destroy the PDP. This is not acceptable and must stop immediately," the forum said.

PoliticsSuspension From APC Good For Shehu Sani — Aide by zakim(op): 11:08pm On Nov 17, 2016
Senator Shehu Sani yesterday said his suspension from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gave him the opportunity to do more for his people.

The senator, who stated this through his senior political adviser, Suleiman Ahamad, while giving motorcycles to ward chairmen in three local governments in his constituency, said he had in the past one year reached out to the masses regardless of party affiliations and other factors that would have limited his outreach.

He said that gave him satisfaction to practice what he always believed in, which is to better the lot of the people across board.

“Whether suspension or no suspension, Shehu Sani feels he owes a responsibility to the society. From day one of this assumed suspension, he felt freer to offer service to the people because when you are being cajoled by the party in the state, at end of the day you might not be able to serve the people because you will be hooked,” he said.

PoliticsBenue Govt Denies Funding N38bn Cargo Airport by zakim(op): 10:43pm On Nov 17, 2016
Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has denied that his administration is funding the proposed N38bn cargo airport in the state.

The governor, who explained that it was an initiative of the private sector, said the state government would only provide land for the project.

Addressing State House correspondents yesterday after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, Ortom said he would not construct an airport when he could not pay salaries regularly.

He said: "Those expressing reservations are doing so out of ignorance or mischief. It's a straight forward matter...The cargo airport is purely a private initiative by a consortium. Benue State Government is not going to pay N1. How can I go to construct an airport when I can't pay salaries as and when due? There is no need for that. But it is going to be a hub for the entire West Africa, lifts cargo, especially agricultural produce to other parts of the world.

"This consortium has arranged a funding of this project and because we're providing the enabling environment and providing land, they've also offered the state governments 15 percent equity arranged by this same consortium. Government is not paying N1. The payment will only come when the project is completed and out of our diligence, we'll pay back within a secured period. And the concessional agreement is for 25 years and then we shall renegotiate.

"And the N38bn is not just going to be for cargo airport. It's going to provide a chain of projects that would really promote the economy of the state. There's going to be housing estate, road construction, dualisation of the road from Lafia to Makurdi to Otupko and Ninth Mile. There's going to be a training school and several other things that would support the airport. Of course, there's going to be industries that would be processing our primary products whether finished or semi finished products as the case may be."

PoliticsAmbassadorial nominees: Don't compare Buhari with ex-presidents, APC tells PDP by zakim(op): 6:43am On Nov 17, 2016
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to give the decision of the Senate to return the list of non-career ambassadors to the presidency for reviewing a political colouration.

The APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who gave the advice on Wednesday, said attempts by the PDP to give the Senate’s action a political colouration and other negative interpretations were unnecessary and misleading.

Odigie-Oyegun noted that the Senate, in the adopted report of its Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated on Tuesday that the decision to return the list followed petitions received on the nominations and went ahead to propose that the presidency review the ambassadorial list.

He assured Nigerians that the relationship among the country’s three arms of government, particularly the executive and the legislature was healthy and strong.

He said, "President Muhammadu Buhari is a democrat and does not subscribe to the idea of “controlling” the National Assembly as was the practice with the PDP during its 16-year misrule of the country.

"Respect for the principle of the Rule of Law and the constitutional provisions of Separation of Power between the three arms of government is a best practice and also healthy for our democracy. The powers and duties of the three arms of government are clearly spelt out in the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and President Muhammadu Buhari respects them."

PoliticsAtiku: El-rufai Is An Ingrate -timi Frank by zakim(op): 9:54pm On Nov 16, 2016
A loyalist of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Comrade Timi Frank, has upbraided Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State for suggesting that his boss is corrupt.

Frank, who sued the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday for allegedly trying to expel him from the party after contesting the decision of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee (NWC) not to recognise his publicist position, described El-Rufai as "an ingrate and a perpetual betrayer".

He said the same Atiku, who propelled El-Rufai into limelight through an appointment in the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE), was being attacked by a personality with records of betrayal against his benefactors.

Frank, in a statement Wednesday in Abuja, said Atiku remained the most investigated politician in the history of Nigeria's politics despite not being found wanting in any of the allegations levelled against him.

Frank said, "El-rufai's latest outburst is not surprising because of his antecedent of betraying all his known benefactors both in politics and in private life.

"It is on record that the likes of former President Olusegun Obasanjo will not be surprised because he has once betrayed Baba. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who brought out El-rufai from exil can't forget in a hurry how this same man betrayed him. It is a matter of time el-rufai will also betray President Buhari once the president no longer in power."

He added, "the huge task of governance which el-rufai has practically failed woefully in Kaduna supposed to be paramount to him instead of deploying his strongest power against Turaki Adamawa, who is far above the governor in all levels.

"Just two days ago, more than 45 innocent citizens of Kaduna lost their lives immediately el-rufai launched a bill board in Southern Kaduna apologising for his maladministration."

He advised President Muhammadu Buhari to be wary of El-Rufai and called on his fellow governors and the APC leadership of APC to call him to order.

He advised the govetnor of Kaduna State to respect the institution and the position the former Vice President held in this country and urged him to apologise to Turaki Adamawa.

PoliticsAtiku Already Running For 2019 — El-rufa’i by zakim(op): 6:10am On Nov 16, 2016
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State said yesterday that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was already gunning for the Presidency ahead of 2019 by cooking up innuendos against people working for the betterment of Nigeria.

El-Rufai was responding to an allegation made by Atiku in an interview with Zero Tolerance, a publication of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in which he claimed that he turned down shares offered him by the Kaduna State governor during the incorporation of Transcorp.

In a statement he personally signed, El-Rufai said, “Alhaji Atiku is already running for 2019, and he thinks that he can make people like us collateral damage in his attempt to rejuvenate his image.

“This obsession for power inclined him to support the rebellion against the party that manifested in the National Assembly, and is continuing with obvious disrespect for the incumbent president.

“Everyone knows that I support and will continue to work for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari as he leads our country through tough times,” he said.

El-Rufai also said rather than calling names, Atiku should address corruption issues trailing him.

“Like everyone else, Alhaji Atiku is entitled to rehabilitation. But that often requires coming clean with the people. Can Alhaji Atiku explain the findings in the report of the United States Senate Permanent Sub-Committee on Investigations which detailed a pattern of wire transfers of more than USD 40m from offshore companies like Siemens into bank accounts controlled by him and one of his wives. The report detailing the US Senate findings is online, as one of four case histories of foreign corruption in the USA. Alhaji Atiku should tell a better tale of why he is avoiding the United States of America,” he said.

“Someone as obsessed with Nigeria’s presidency as he is, should clear up such matters conclusively. We wait to see how well he does with that,” he added.

El-Rufai said he was compelled to response to issues surrounding the incorporation of Transcorp.

“I never had anything to do with the incorporation of Transcorp. Those that established that company and fronted it like Festus Odimegwu, Tony Elumelu, Otunba Lawal Solarin and Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke are still around and alive. As such I could not have and did not offer Alhaji Atiku any shares in Transcorp. I declined the shares that were offered to me. Having done that, how could I have offered anyone shares?” he asked.
