Op done went and scooped me. I thought I'd be posting late breaking news from the UK. ![]() Anyway I wish successful business to all involved. UK-Africa Summit: Four British companies sign deals with Nigeria https://guardian.ng/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Buhari-and-Boris-Johnson.jpg Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari shakes British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday on the sidelines of the first UK-Africa Investment Summit. Four British companies Monday signed business deals with Nigeria on the sidelines of the inaugural UK-Africa Investment Summit in London. The deals were among the several others sealed between UK companies and their African partners. In the case of Nigeria, Low Energy Designs won an export contract to install street lighting in Oyo State while Savannah will invest £315 million in the acquisition and investment of ingas assets in Nigeria. Another British company Tex ATC is expected to install five airport control room towers worth £2 million in different parts of Nigeria while Trilliant got a deal to install £5 million of Smart Metering for Abuja DisCo. Several other deals were expected to be signed throughout the day, with African and UK businesses committing investments expected to reach into the billions. “Africa represents a huge opportunity for UK businesses, so it’s brilliant to see so many British firms paving the way in trading and investing in the region today to drive growth, create jobs and boost vital infrastructure,” Secretary of State for International Trade, Liz Truss MP said. “We want the UK to be the investment partner of choice for African nations, and our world-leading expertise in finance, tech, and innovation, makes the UK and Africa natural partners for prosperity.” Before the opening of the summit on Monday, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari lobbied the British community to invest in the Nigerian economy. “For my country, greater UK engagement in its economy would bring jobs to under-tapped sectors, such as agriculture and manufacturing,” Buhari said in an opinion published in The Guardian ahead of the UK-Africa Investment Summit in London. “Millions of highly skilled, English-speaking but underemployed young people, are eager to work but without the opportunities that foreign investment can bring to create jobs and build businesses.” The UK said the deals signed on Monday show how “we are building on that to secure a lasting commercial partnership of mutual benefit.” https://guardian.ng/news/uk-africa-summit-four-british-companies-sign-deals-with-nigeria/ |

Valid Questions to ponder. From which budget/s did these governors use to purchase these brand new shiny red Amotekun vehicles? Who was the vendor that supplied the vehicles? How much was the vendor's profit margin? Did said vendor/s chop with the governors? Has the paperwork, bill of sales and prices been made public? What is the process of hiring Amotekun officers, and what will be their salary for such dangerous and hazardous work? Will Amotekun officers have arrest powers and/or license to kill and where is that written in any of the present state and federal laws? What type of communication network is planned to link Amotekun with police and military units? When will training commence to properly handle high powered weaponry to thwart the bold criminals and stealthy terrorists? Have these governors settled all salary arrears of present state workers? Have these governors started paying the newly mandated (since April 2019) minimum wage salary increases to state workers? Requesting well thought-out and respectful responses. God Bless and thank you in advance. |

Justice Nathan Musa of High Court 1 who gave the judgement on Thursday, ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to produce Allison-Madueke before him. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged the three: Ibrahim Mohammed Umar (1st defendant), Sahabo Iya Hamman (2nd defendant) and Allison-Madueke (3rd defendant) to court for allegedly laundering the N362 million. In his submission of the three count charges, Justice Nathan said, “The defendants together with one Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke are being charged for the offences under the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act 2000. “The 3rd defendant in her desire to influence election in favour of then President Goodluck Jonathan authorised the release of N362 million public money through Fidelity Bank to the 1st and 2nd defendants to corrupt election officials.” The defendants were convicted on three counts: “Conspiracy to corrupt public officers, contrary and punishable under section 26 (1)(c) and (d) of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act 2000. “Corruptly procure monetary benefit, contrary to and punishable under Section 9 (1)(a) and (b) of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act 2000. “Receive for yourself monetary benefit contrary to and punishable under section 10(a) (I) and (ii) of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences 2000.” Justice Nathan convicted Umar and Hamman on the three counts and sentenced them to seven years on each, but indicated that the sentences would run concurrently, which comes to seven years. |
A saved soul doing the right thing! ![]() Lamar Odom, a self-confessed 'sex addict' who has slept with over 2,000 women, is ABSTAINING from intercourse before marriage, according to new fiancee https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/12/12/22/22175762-0-image-a-13_1576190566923.jpg By TRACY WRIGHT FOR DAILYMAIL.COM PUBLISHED: 17:51 EST, 12 December 2019 | UPDATED: 17:58 EST, 12 December 2019 https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-7787321/Lamar-Odom-self-confessed-sex-addict-ABSTAINING-intercourse-marriage.html He famously admitted in his memoir, Darkness to Light, that he's a 'sex addict' and has slept with more than 2,000 women through the years. And Lamar Odom seems to have drastically changed his ways as his new fiancee, Sabrina Parr, admitted the couple are abstaining from sex before marriage. The 32-year-old fitness coach told Hollywood Life that it was entirely Lamar's decision to wait until the couple officially became husband and wife. 'This is the first time in Lamar's entire life that he has been clean of drugs, marijuana, porn addiction, sex addiction. Him and I don't even have sex, believe that or not,' Sabrina said. She explained that once Lamar 'got saved' through the church and developed a relationship with the pastor, there were areas he wanted to improve on, one of which was a 'great sacrifice to God' by holding out sex. 'I wasn’t going to force him either way because it’s his own relationship with God and I don’t want … He’s very new in being saved, so I didn’t want him to develop opinions based on what I am doing or am not doing,' she said. Sabrina also revealed that it was entirely up to her former basketball player beau to call the shots on how he wanted to proceed with their relationship. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/12/12/22/22175768-0-image-a-14_1576190589979.jpg Love is in the air: The 32-year-old fitness coach told Hollywood Life that it was entirely Lamar's decision to wait until the couple officially became husband and wife https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/12/12/22/22175770-0-image-a-16_1576190624997.jpg 'I allowed him to make a decision. But I said, "Whatever decision you make, let me know." And he really made the decision to not have sex with me until we get married, which is kind of why he wants to rush the marriage,' she said. 'But I’m just in no rush. So, he’s doing very well with it, surprisingly. 'I just really thought this would be a struggle for him, just because he’s never had to abstain from sex before. I don’t think he’s ever considered it.' Odom revealed in his memoir earlier this year that addiction and cheating played parts in the demise of his four-year marriage to Khloe Kardashian. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/12/12/22/22175778-0-image-a-15_1576190622432.jpg 'I allowed him to make a decision. Despite his challenging background, Sabrina is optimistic about Lamar's future and recovery process. 'One thing he told me was, the way I respect myself and the standards that I have, they’re very intriguing to him,' she said. 'So, it makes him want to honor me in that way. So, so far so good. 'Since we’ve been engaged, since before we’ve gotten engaged we have been holding on strong, and the object is to do other things in place of sex. And what he’s seeing is without having sex, it improves our intimacy. We experience real intimacy when we’re not having sex.' https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/12/12/22/22175784-0-The_way_they_were_Odom_revealed_in_his_memoir_earlier_this_year_-m-18_1576190919975.jpg The way they were: Odom revealed in his memoir earlier this year that addiction and cheating played parts in the demise of his four-year marriage to Khloe Kardashian; seen in 2009 |

Things are moving rapidly! Drone proliferation Drones (non-military) Detectors, jammers and cyber-attackers: the rise of anti-drone tech Market is expected to grow by 20% a year and be worth up to £4bn by middle of next decade https://www.theguardian.com/news/2019/dec/12/detectors-jammers-and-cyber-attackers-the-rise-of-anti-drone-tech?CMP=twt_gu&utm_medium=&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1576152805 https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/6481114124602b3cacb819f1dd3e6a7a0c081852/0_170_5568_3343/master/5568.jpg?width=620&quality=45&auto=format&fit=max&dpr=2&s=ad33e9821381e496680a24898dc91875 Anti-drone equipment on display at a state security exhibition in Villepinte, on the outskirts of Paris. Photograph: Bertrand Guay/AFP via Getty Images Oliver Holmes in Tel Aviv Thu 12 Dec 2019 07.10 EST One of the first drone deliveries was operated not by a tech giant from Silicon Valley but by small-time criminals who saw potential in the new technology. In late 2013, days before Amazon announced its futuristic plan to operate a fleet of automated vehicles, four people were arrested for attempting to smuggle contraband into a Georgia state prison using a drone. Guards had noticed a remote-controlled helicopter hovering above Calhoun prison. Later, they found the six-rotor drone in a nearby car alongside what appeared to be its cargo: pouches of tobacco and mobile phones. Five years later, Amazon still hasn’t launched its sky delivery service, while the proliferation of cheap, commercially available drones worldwide has far outpaced the ability of authorities to control them. In the past two years, non-military drones have shut down Gatwick airport for 36 hours, been used in an apparent assassination attempt against Venezuela’s president and even been flown by Isis fighters to drop grenades on their enemies. https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/50fa74a29616db160c1ee1fd3cadf842dc82681c/0_228_4000_2400/master/4000.jpg?width=620&quality=45&auto=format&fit=max&dpr=2&s=80645014334f0b3a2f8ee3cd034a231a Security personnel surround Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, during an attempted drone attack in Caracas in August 2018. Photograph: Xinhua/AP Responding to the threat, a host of companies – from state-run defence contractors to startups – have developed products that can detect, track, jam, destroy or even commandeer rogue drones. These services comprise a market that is expected to grow by between 20% and 30% in the next few years and could be worth £4bn by the middle of the next decade. “It’s a very, very big issue,” said Alex Riahi, who works for Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Israel’s major aerospace and defence manufacturer. In September IAI released its Popstar system, which can detect and track drones up to 4km away in day or night. https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/f6428ea4f58ad813f82379e6be645d42b259d3b5/0_20_825_495/master/825.jpg?width=620&quality=45&auto=format&fit=max&dpr=2&s=7c449094c86220b93a8dc4443202f450 The Popstar system was developed for detecting, handling and tracking drones. Photograph: Israeli Aerospace Industries IAI sells drone defence to foreign governments to place along their borders or around sensitive sites such as army bases or power plants to avoid spying or air attacks, and also provides equipment to shoot down military drones. But it is increasingly finding interest from other clients – airports, for example – who want to protect against shop-bought drones. Although coy about pricing, Riahi said the cost of these systems was less than the expense to a major airport of shutting down for an hour. Israel, with its history of drone warfare, has become a key producer of anti-drone products, especially as members of the military intelligence services often transfer their knowledge to start hi-tech companies after they leave the army. The booming industry has also sprung up in the US, Europe and China. A host of smaller firms are entering the market. Vorpal, another Israeli company, has compiled a database of signals emitted by 95% of drones that are available to buy, giving its clients the ability to detect most drones buzzing overhead. “There is no civil technology today that gives you 100%, bulletproof, all-cases, all-drone-types solution,” said Avner Turniansky, Vorpal’s vice-president of strategy. His VigilAir product has been tailored to work in dense urban environments where high buildings and radio “noise” often hide drone signals. During this year’s Eurovision song contest held in Tel Aviv, Israeli police bought his system and caught more than 20 people who were operating drones in no-fly zones over venues. Authorities wanted to clear the air to prevent any potential attacks, but also to make sure drones did not accidentally fall over large crowds. Turniansky said none of the perpetrators had apparent nefarious aims and in most cases they were completely clueless that they were flying illegally. https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/a4c3710d450a4d1e725118682db87a98452c34df/0_0_5234_3468/master/5234.jpg?width=620&quality=45&auto=format&fit=max&dpr=2&s=517e0fb01f7f7b0944cecc22ba917bc9 An anti-drone system on display at an exhibition in Israel in November. Photograph: Jack Guez/AFP via Getty Images Drones often have internal safeguards such as software that prevents them from flying over sensitive sites, meaning the drone will stop in midair as if it has hit a virtual wall. But Turniansky said at least one confiscated drone at Eurovision had been tampered with to block its GPS, allowing it to fly freely. Once detected, drones can be taken control of with a remote cyber-attack or, more straightforwardly, shot out the air with net guns. Radiofrequency jammers are also used, although not in airports where they could affect safety systems. “In an airport, nobody wants to jam,” Turniansky said. He said Vorpal’s system not only tracks drones but also allows users to locate the people flying them. This information is often more crucial than the location of the drone, as taking down one drone disrupting an airport is useless if the operator has more to hand. “In such cases, the ability to tell you where the operator is very valuable,” Turniansky said. Nimo Shkedy is also Israeli but his drone defence company, ApolloShield, is headquartered in New York. He sells counter-drone technology, including jamming “guns” that block drones with radio waves. In the US, these types of systems can only be sold to government agencies or with official authorisation, but the list of potential clients is growing. “We started with stadiums and public events,” said Shkedy. “But now this technology and these requirements are all over the place – airports, VIPs, prisons, borders, power plants, oil refineries, nuclear power plants, seaports, yachts,” he said. Shkedy and his business partner started the firm in 2016 after hearing that the Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli had unsuccessfully attempted to shut down the airspace above her wedding to prevent paparazzi from using drones. If she and her billionaire fiancé, Adi Ezra, had anti-drone products, they could have blocked off their area themselves. “We realised it was a big problem and it’s on the rise,” Shkedy said. “And it’s been on the rise ever since.” |

Nobel Peace Prize winner pens a new book. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/660/cpsprodpb/143FF/production/_110034928_gettyimages-1158938409.jpg The Nobel Committee praised Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's peace initiatives Ethiopia's Abiy Ahmed: Inside the mind of this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner Nobel Peace Prize winner Abiy Ahmed has shaken up Ethiopia since becoming prime minister in April last year, but what ideas are guiding the man who receives the prize in Oslo on Tuesday? The BBC's Kalkidan Yibeltal in Addis Ababa has been reading the book that outlines his philosophy. Medemer has become a buzzword in Ethiopia. The Amharic language term which literally means "addition", but is also translated as "coming together", sums up what Prime Minister Abiy sees as a uniquely Ethiopian approach to dealing with the country's challenges. And it has become hard to escape after the prime minister's book of the same name was launched in lavish ceremonies across Ethiopia in October, with a reported hundreds of thousands of copies printed in the country's two most widely spoken languages - Amharic and Afaan Oromoo. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/5D87/production/_110034932_whatsappimage2019-12-06at10.03.31.jpg Medemer was published in both Amharic and Afaan Oromoo Across 16 chapters and 280 pages he outlines his vision, which he says he has been nurturing since childhood. Mr Abiy wants to foster a sense of national unity in the face of ethnic divisions, but also wants to celebrate that diversity. His success in walking this tight-rope will define his time in power. What is the essence of medemer? At the heart of the philosophy is the conviction that different, and even contrary, views can be brought together and a compromise can be found. It is also a rejection of dogmatism. Since taking office, Mr Abiy has clearly departed from the way the country was governed for most of the last three decades. He has broken from the hard-line security state to encourage a more liberal approach to politics. He has also said that his predecessors' attempts to apply Marxist and statist approaches to economic development failed because they were alien to Ethiopia. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/F5DF/production/_110034926_gettyimages-1175389566.jpg The Nobel Peace Prize announcement was big news in Ethiopia in October "We need a sovereign and Ethiopian philosophy that stems from Ethiopians' basic character, that can solve our problems… that can connect all of us," he writes in Medemer. He argues that Ethiopian culture values inclusion and cooperation. Critics say that while this might sound good, it does not offer a practical way forward or a guide about how that compromise can be found. In April, political analyst Hilina Berhanu said that while medemer was easily understandable and "served as a painkiller" for what went before, it lacks the complexity needed to map out the future. Why Abiy won the peace prize His "decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea" He initiated "important reforms that give many citizens hope for a better life and a brighter future" "He has also pledged to strengthen democracy" He has "engaged in other peace and reconciliation processes" in the region Source: Nobel Committee Has Nobel winner really brought peace to East Africa? Why has Abiy developed this idea? Mr Abiy began talking about medemer long before he became prime minister. Serving in senior government positions, he used the term while telling his colleagues the importance of bringing extreme opinions together and encouraging people to work in harmony. As prime minister he has said medemer can cure many of the woes ailing Africa's second most populous country, from poverty to deadly ethnic conflicts. He has urged people to come together under a shared vision rather than be trapped by a history of ethnic and political division. Otherwise, he has warned, the very existence of the state could be brought into question. What does it say about ethnicity in Ethiopia? It is somewhat ironic that while the prime minister has spoken about unity, his political reforms have lifted the lid on simmering ethnic tensions in the country. In the past 20 months, ethnic violence has claimed the lives of thousands of people and forced millions of others from their homes. More about how Ethiopia has changed under Abiy: The leader promising to heal a nation Bold reforms expose Ethiopia's ethnic divides Find out more about Ethiopia Ethiopia's federal constitution, introduced in 1995, created ethnically based states. The arrangement puts a disproportionate emphasis on ethnic identity and ignores other forms of identity like gender and economic class, Mr Abiy says. But he also recognises that historical injustices against some ethnic groups could be behind the increased tensions. In fact, the prime minister, who is from the Oromo ethnic group, came to power on the back of a wave of protests from the Oromo community, who had complained of economic and political marginalisation. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/10EE9/production/_105035396_ethiopia_etnic_groups_640-nc.png Nevertheless, medemer calls for ethnic groups to voluntarily come together in a union that celebrates and promotes diversity. Mr Abiy argues that ethnic nationalism can go hand in hand with what he calls "civic nationalism", which focuses on individual rights. How this can happen practically is harder to see. But in recent months, the prime minister has spearheaded the transformation of the country's ethnically based governing coalition into a single party. In a sign of how hard medemer might be to achieve in practise, this move was immediately rejected by some groups. Why Ethiopia has a new ruling party Are people convinced? In October, in a vivid sign that not everyone buys into Mr Abiy's vision for Ethiopia, some protesters burnt copies of his book, shouting "down, down, medemer". These were young Oromos, who feared that their interests could be ignored once again if national unity is promoted at the expense of ethnic interests. The leadership of the once-dominant Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) have described the prime minister's philosophy as indistinct. The TPLF has refused to join Mr Abiy's new merged party. However, Mr Abiy is convinced it will help the country flourish and many supporters say it will build bridges in a country that is deeply divided along ethnic and religious lines. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-50690548?ocid=socialflow_twitter |
