omarky: I feel for them though. But sincerly, if Lagos is to achieve the mega city statues, these okada men have to be ban for real. No amount of protest should change the already made law. I only blame Lagos state government for not engaging these men with lucrative jobs before the ban. Eko o ni baje o

A large % of people do not understand nor use the word Megacity appropraitely! Its is not a sought after status! It is not a proud status! It is not a status to boast about! @omarky, It is not a status that any leader seeks to attain or gain!!!

It takes a Strong Hand to run a Megacity

A city attains that status automatically when its population becomes in excess of 10 million people. Such city is xterised by the following:
1. Slums
2. Homelessness
3. Traffic congestion
4. Urban sprawl (Spilling out of your own city and spilling into neighbors like Ogun state)
5.Gentrification (Simply meaning, low income areas are bn bought over by the wealthy and regenerating such places and the poor who hitherto lived there have to move away. This happens in Lagos regularly, so much so that people have moved to lagos Ibadan expressway to live)
6. Air pollution
7. Land pollution (Waste dumps)
8. Crime

Fashola banning the okada guys is a good development to me becos in my area which is highly developed and majority of the roads are good, okadas were just packed everywhere on the road....I almost hit one one day when i was driving...

The only sad thing is that Fashola should have put an alternative for transport or made more BRT buses available to major routes..

However the okada man carry a placard stating that if fashola doesnt revoke his pronouncement, they will not vote for ACN is just ridiculous...People are still voting for party and not whether the person being voted is capable or not...They should try PDP na...

I think they should be totally banned from Lagos. If they are protesting, they should tell us which law made them an acceptable form of public transportation? They just buy okada, form kangaroo association, get license and put themselves on the road. Abegi! Outright ban is on the way. They should go to Abuja and ask for money or sell the Okada and buy keke napep.. cool

Food for thought: If Fashola still smokes despite the warning that tobacco users are liable to die young then the okada riders should continue riding.

They need to take heart and embrace change - change isn't always easy at first, however, with time they will see the positives in this decision... Our inability to take risks and the fear of the unknown is the reason why Nigeria is messed up... We can't continue to live like animals with filth forever regardless of how hard times are in that country - certain things have to give way...Motorcycles and shanty homes have to go!!

However, the government also needs to implement welfare policies in the state - and source funds for these policies by taxing the upper-class in the state..

Doubt the protest will change the status quo
Nigeria is one useless country where protests and outcries doesnt change anything at all, especially when it relates to the Government, federal or local!

I read some of our comments here and i feel very sorry for lagosian. many are bias because you are not directly affected or some close to you. Therefore you support the goverment who fails to do is part and push her responsibility to the public. I live in chicago which i believe is a mega city. Up to date there is a track designed for bicycle , pedestrian not to talk of okada. They are all road user and one or goverment stop them from using the road. What i know is AN INJUST TO 1 IS SHOULD BE DEFEND BY OTHER. But because you are not affected you think is ok. Very soon the goverment will still ask for the demolishation of all face-me and face-you to achieve mega city.

Re: PHOTOS- Okada Riders Protest In Lagos by trainingict: 4:15pm On Dec 11, 2012
Naija,

The protest is a wastage of time and energy. The people are just dancing on the magnanimity of the traditional people of Lagos and of the region. This comes to mind the issue of national conference and federalism. Most of those behind this protest are from states outside Lagos or the region.Okadas are even banned in some of those states. Mind you, I am being affected greatly by the ban, but that does not becloud my sense of judgement. Laws in a federating state differ from another state in U.S.A. It is either you abide or move out of the state.

I know, it is economic hardship that led many people into this job for survival despite the risk involved. I salute their courage. We are in December, everybody is preparing for Xmas and new year celebration with their kids for those that are married. This period is the worst period for a jobless man. Other people are in festive mood, a jobless family man is in a sorrowful mood.

Having said this, this is a Nigeria problem and not Lagos state problem. The bull should be held by the horn by the Okada riders. Okada was banned in Abuja log time ago. I remembered how the okada riders were treated like animals that time.I was living in Abuja as at that time. People use population of Lagos as a criterion, that is not an excuse. Federal Government does not recognize that population, despite the last census figure which does not even represent the true population of Lagos. The population imposes pressure on Lagos facilities and amenities, yet, the federal government has not increased the number of Local government in Lagos to 44 as it is in Kano thereby increasing local government allocation to Lagos from federation account.

The best place to carry out protest is at the gate of National Assembly in Abuja or Three arms zone area for the politicians to know what poverty has done to Nigerians. When those making policy are in a clean and quiet hotels or accommodation and you are in Lagos adding to the tension on the ground, they are not concerned.

Most of those people in the protest are not fighting for the interest of Lagos, they are only interested in what they get out of Lagos. They are busy lobbying for the creation of more states or more local government for their region or states. They are fighting for increase in derivation or total resource control etc. None of them ever championed Lagos cause. In some states, okadas were banned, nobody has taken their governors to court. They said Lagos is different. What is different about Lagos? In governors forum, Fashola is like any other governor, and Lagos is a state like any other state. If Amaechi, Okorocha and others can ban okada, Fashola can do the same as well, especially if is for the good of the state. Okada should petition Lagos House of Assembly. They cannot do that because lagos house members are after the good of Lagos. A minister or anybody in Abuja without Lagos interest may come up with federal road theory that was not considered when Okada was banned in Abuja with federal roads.

These okada guys are even lucky I am not Fashola. Outright ban is what I will do. I will also go after reckless bus drivers. The best way out of this is to involve private companies. Sell route to them with renewal license. Let them provide neat and adequate buses plying all route in Lagos. While I concentrate on ensuring good roads and security. Then mek I see where criminals wan take come from.

Re: PHOTOS- Okada Riders Protest In Lagos by redcliff: 4:21pm On Dec 11, 2012
I was indifferent about this okada thing up until today when i was leaving for work and i was on a bike and passing one that just stopped with a little boy of about 4-5years old with a woman with him was shouting heavily like a matured adult. my own bike stopped and tried to look at what the problem was and found out that the little boy's legs were locked between the spokes of the bike and they tried to pull it out and it was quite hard until he adjusted his tires and his leg came out.

From where i was, it seemed like the tendon that holds the ankle with the remainder of the legs was pulled off and it was like his leg was sliced from his ankle and she started crying on the floor asking what she has done wrong.. This same thing happened to my little distant cousin some years back and he was so lucky he was little and the doctor said that he had the young child age advantage that if it was an adult, they would have to cut off his leg cos it cant heal back. I remember my little cousin asking his mum if he was going to die..

Okada Accidents have caused more harm than good in this country. Its so sad i am telling you. they should be totally scrapped. But the question still lingers, what other alternative(s) would suffice. we have come to a point in this country where things have gotten so bad that a reversal would mean disaster.

A friend of mine said its not that our leaders dont know what to do, its just that they are confused. I mean where do they want to start from? Is it road, electricity, Lawlessness? where? Nigeria is totally doomed and i wont feel sorry or apologetic for/to anybody that comes and quotes my post and says i am talking trash.
