Hello !

I am interested in Isoko langauge very much and I have been trying to find some pages/materials/books on Isoko. Unfortunatelly, it is really rare langauge and there is lack of materials on it. I would love to learn the langauge as my husband and in-laws are Isoko. My husband doesn't speak Isoko but I would love to show his how the roots are important. Please, guys could you help me somehow with any materials or maybe some of you can create a page with vocab and rules (even the basics ) of Isoko. Thank you in advance smiley

D truth is dat d Isokos and Urhobos are one. D Urhobos are different group of ppl with simillar language and Isoko is one of such group, like d Okpes, Udus, Effurun, Ujegwens etc. So dey are one. because of d oppressive and dominary attitude of some of dis groups, d Isokos decided not to b called Urhobo.
For political reasons and when dey want to fight their common 'enemy', it is den an Isoko man will remember dat he is an Urhobo.

Isokos and Urhobos are very different ethnic group. They even look different; Urhobos are often darker in complexion whereas the Isokos are reddish in completion with thinner bone structures from what I have observed.

Also the Isoko Erohwa, original language is very different it has no relationship to the Urhobos or any other languages around the area however, it is sad the language is now dying out..

It is likely that the Erohwa are the original Isoko people and the other Isokos offshoots. This Isoko offshoots and Urhobo have absorbed and influence one another but it does not mean that they are the same people.

Igbo people and Calabar people do have influence on Erohwa visa versa but it does not then follow that Isokos, Calabars and igbos are the same people.

This cross-cultural ethnic influence is widespread in Nigeria as a whole because many of the traditional attires, which Nigerians are known for worldwide, are a mixture of influences.

Also why cant it be Isoko Uhrobo people why is it always Urhoho Isoko people this is a partnership of equals not of subordinate and superordinate.

Correct. And to that I will add Isokos are not a "sub-group" of the Urhobos...An Urhobo man will not even understand an Isoko man when he's speaking deep Isoko and vice versa...notwithstanding the Urhobos are our sister ethnic group.

The isoko launguage is diffrent frm dat of the urhobo. Although dey ve sum words similiarities. I can say the erowas are th oldest in d isoko land with a complete dfifrent lanquage of their own dat can neither b interpreted by d isoko's or urhobo's. although dey r not well recongnize, still they r in charge. Awi isoko wadoo!

This brings to reality the Myth that the "Isokos" are naturally shy and recluse lots and with the prediction that the Isoko Language has been fingered as one of the endangered languages that would go extinct this Century leaves much to be desired.
