It looks to me like a case whereby the MIL was being eaten up daily by jealousy over the presence of another woman in her son's life. There seems to be more to the story than met the eyes, all that "she took her pictures and he asked wifey to ignore her" are not making sense. What is he doing with her DIL's pictures? She must have been boiling up in that home until whatever ugly feeling that made her do that tipped her over the edge. It's so ugly.
