The leaders should set an example and start getting their medical care in Nigeria.
If the leaders themselves don't trust the system, how can the people follow suit?

Here in OAUTHC we perform renal transplant routinely. Patients are sent from different parts of this nation even neighborhood just for less than 4m.i don't understand why we like to waste resources abroad. Don't forget Stella OBJ died after surgery abroad. Let's have faith in our hospitals.
Maybe they need to travel to USA to treat malaria.

Inasmuch as i believe in d expertise of nigerian doctors, i cnt blame ppl who dnt. Alongside the positive strides made in our medical field, a lot of unforgivable errors stil occur. Drs stil forget scalpels, suture ropes, cotton wools and forceps in vivo! Omo! If u can afford it, go wherever u r guaranteed d best care. So...Dats all.

well, it is true that we dont trust our medical practice in Nigeria, but it is on record that here in OAUTHC,we've done 13 successful kidney transplants. a little trust with proofs should do...............

As much as I know 13 successful kidney transplant isn't the true figure. We perform at least 1 successful transplant every month since about 10 years ago

I am so happy with this thread. We must accept that a very sensitive cannot be done by anyhow doctors. Most of the Nigerian doctors who do kidney transplant are super-trained for that purpose. I think people are forming class with this issue of travelling abroad. Check those kidney transplants centers, they are fully equipped with no issue of power failure or lack of drugs. I learnt of a successful kidney transplant in one of the nothern university teaching hospital with just 2million naira only because the patient's family member donated the kidney.
Those who go abroad for treatments which can be treated here are saboteurs

but does the medical professional body in nigeria allow medical establishments to advertise what they can do or is there a law against such ?

Reasons:
1. You hardly see a Nigerian that will like to donate his/her own kidney
2. In most of the cases, kidney problem is mostly common with big men and those that lives big
3. Taken a patient abroad is another business for doctors if you don't know

To all those praising the expertise of kidney transplantation is Nigeria, by the way, is there a system for organ donation in Nigeria? A system where an organ donor is identified upon death and the organs are removed and given to the next recipient in line.

i think u need to google human organ trafficking ,
donors abound for human organ for as little as 600 to 1000 dollars
this is just a tip of the iceberg

There are lots of issue about kidney transplant and Nigerian system:
1. We do have trained specialists but most left the shores of the country after been frustrated by the system .Why call yourself a transplant surgeon when their are no equipment to work with..
2. Some hospitals in recent time have carried out some transplant but we do not know the success rate.
The surgery is not the big issue but getting the right donor organ which may take long and needed to be tested to see if it matches.we do not have the culture of donating organs. In Asia especially India and China people sell their organs. Can sell one kidney and still survive on one.
Post surgery period is also very crucial- lots of immunity suppression therapy to avoid rejection of the new organ by the body. Rejection means back to square one.
3. Never knew kidney transplant in India goes up to 16M as in OJB case. I believe it depends on the hospital and those acting as agent for them. It shouldnt be more than 7M.
Need to get a matched organ, in western world a close relation is likely to donate if he matches the recepient but Nigerians are likely to buy.
Flight to India for 2 people - patient and care giver (brother or wife)
Surgery bill
Pre surgery and post surgery medication
4. The Nigerian hospitals that have good success rate should do a lots of good publicity about it so that our people will know about it. I understand St.Nicholas and some teaching hospitals have some good records..
A friend talked about attending an international urology conference, while regional hospitals in Europe were talking about the carrying out many kidney transplant surgery yearly the only Nigerian professor there could only talked about few renal biopsy that his teaching hospital carried out in the last five years. This is a routine and common procedure in the regional hospitals.
Mind you there are also fake treatment centres in India. I have seen many messed up cases coming from India which ironically would have been done here without any problem.

I think this has to be addressed. Some of them do seem to be more interested in their gadgets sometimes.

On the flip side, it seems they spend a great part of their lives on the job.

I propose that they should be well-paid and made to focus on their jobs or get out of the hospital if they can't or won't.

Transplants here are not regular and worse are not advertised! Nigeria bars its hospitals from advertising so you may have the best heart transplant hospital next door to you and you may not know. That is d prime advantage india has and cheap doctors
Re: Why Do Kidney Transplant Abroad When It Can Done In Nigeria? by Nobody: 8:15pm On Jun 30, 2013
chei: Anyway, this question is irrelevant and out of place. OBJ decides where he wants his transplant to be done all he wants is support. If he wants to go to the moon for the transplant, thats his business.
If you want to undergo a kidney transplant in nigeria, thats your business.
then he should also decide where to withdraw his money from naw, not begging people to donate. angry

Why do some people delight in running down their own country. We have competent personnel and facility to do kidney transplant in nigeria. Even govt officials know this- they choose to go abroad for even for common ailments because of the estacode they collect. We now see even private individuals soliciting donations to travel abroad for medical treatment in imitation of corrupt govt officials. Going abroad is even stupi.dity, given that some die their and more expenses are involved to bring back the corpses.
Re: Why Do Kidney Transplant Abroad When It Can Done In Nigeria? by druid06(m): 8:16pm On Jun 30, 2013
I think the only surgerical proceedures Nigerian hospitals can successfully do without any complications are minor ones such as caesarian section and appendix removal and in most cases they do pretty bad jobs. I had a friend who undergone the appendix removal surgery in Lagos teaching hospital and the surgeon did a pretty bad job cutting and sewing of that part of his abdomen. After the surgery, he had a big scar like from someone butchered by an amateur and you want people to trust these same "butchers" with complex surgical proceedures like Kidney transplant?. I say no. Moreover, our hospitals are not well equipped with the right tools and right medical machineries which cost millions of dollars to purchase.

Even if they do have this surgical tools which I am absolutely sure they don't I wouldn't trust a Nigerian surgeon with such a complex operation because of their lack of experience and lack of success rate for such an operation in Nigeria. I would prefer travelling overseas where I know the success rate of such a tedious operation is more than average if I can afford it.
Re: Why Do Kidney Transplant Abroad When It Can Done In Nigeria? by texaco1: 8:19pm On Jun 30, 2013
what most people dont realize is that the doctors doing all these surgeries in nigeria are all trained abroad, and some are even consultant to many south African and Ghanian hospitals
