Ojeremi: Here in OAUTHC we perform renal transplant routinely. Patients are sent from different parts of this nation even neighborhood just for less than 4m.i don't understand why we like to waste resources abroad. Don't forget Stella OBJ died after surgery abroad. Let's have faith in our hospitals.
Maybe they need to travel to USA to treat malaria.
God bless you..I was just going to state late stellas case, despite the condusive enviroment, equipments, and the hard currency from our oil money.

grandstar: Transplants here are not regular and worse are not advertised! Nigeria bars its hospitals from advertising so you may have the best heart transplant hospital next door to you and you may not know. That is d prime advantage india has and cheap doctors

The medical council in Nigeria does not allow advertisement but you can do a lot of public awareness about important issues like special treatment.
Government established special centres of excellence in some of the teaching hospitals- UNTH Enugu - heart surgery, ABUTH- Oncology etc. There is nothing that stops a common man on the street to know they where they can access treatment for special cases and ask for referral to these places instead of going out of the country. The referring doctors to these foreign hospitals also have their shares most of the time and may not be interested in referring to a Nigerian hospital or tell the patient about the options.
Despite being in the medical field and with friends in ilorin before relocating , I never knew UITH renal centre of excellence is really functioning. I am happy reading that UITH has a good success rate and I think @poster popped up a good and thought provoking question.

i think u need to google human organ trafficking ,
donors abound for human organ for as little as 600 to 1000 dollars
this is just a tip of the iceberg
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/may/27/kidney-trade-illegal-operations-who

You have just confirmed my point. Organ trafficking is not a viable and sustainable system for a country that wants to safely and adequately provide organs to those in need of organs.

You have to do proper medical testing to determine that the recipient will be the right match. You also have to harvest the organs almost immediately, store the organs on ice or in a machine, and transplant it into the recipient in line. Sometimes this has to be done in a matter of hours.

How can you then go find a donor in India? Kidney transplant is probably one of the few exceptions, where you can remove a kidney from someone who is alive and willing to donate one of his or her kidney. As to the other organs, a viable donor system has to be in place for safety.

Do you think you can just go to buy a liver, lung, or heart like you buy goat meat in the meat market?

@ OP since it involves fund raising and it opens up an avenue for some to enrich themselves, undergoing the procedure here is simply out of the question. With respect to that for the ailing nigerianentertainer the cost has allegedly been inflated, its a show in the show, with everybody in showbiz publicly pledging J renouncing what is ascribed to them, some are being hounded for refusing to be blackmailed into giving to pay up for some opportunist extravanganza.

Why buy Nike,TM,Versace instead of made in Nigeria Wax?
Why buy Toyota instead of innoson or Keke Napep (At least they "assemble" part of it here) ?
Why buy Blackberry, iPhone or Samsung Galaxy instead of Gtide (assumption: most likely a Nigerian partly owns this company )
Why buy dell,Hp, mac book pro instead of Omatek or Zinox ?
Why eat Kelloggs instead of garri or Nasco?
The list goes on and on.

It all boils down to gross incompetency, general disregard for excellence, and abysmal level of rottenness withing the system.

You talk as if you dont live in Nigeria . Where are the hospitals... the general hospital in ikeja or where ? Nigeria loses a lot of its citizens to very minor ailments not to even talk about anything surgical due to lack of proper medical facilities and the black blood in us.Until we can begin to appreciate human life and really love our neighbors as ourselves... Medical treatment in Nigeria is not GUARANTEED. Prostate cancer has killed a lot of people that I know of in this country we are in and when you go to other countries like Saudi, India, Pakistan , UAE etc..they call them MINOR operations. If our government hospitals have failed to perform and we have our leaders flying abroad for treatments..... What can the private hospitals do?? If I were in OJBs shoes, I would do the SAME so they wont use me for experiment.

my brother , there are standard procedures which must be taken and for our institutions to have carried out almost 90% successful kidney transplant that means they know all these procedures and they rigorously adhere to it. dont forget most of the doctors doing this surgeries are CONSULTANTS FOR MANY FOREIGN HOSPITALS , you need to see what our doctors can do , go to the Caribbeans nigerian doctors are not joked with , they are in high demand even in the usa

Nelly Ghenghen: I once went to this hospital ((name withheld))n the young doctor there was pinging while talking to me shocked so simple answer to simple question "Why do kidney transplant abroad when it can be done in Nigeria"... "Because, I love my life"

@Nelly your post reminds me of a friends sibling who complained of abdominal pains ...We took him to a hospital.. I mean a standard hospital with about 3 floors somewhere in Ogba... and without any form of tests or special examining ... the Dr concluded it was Appendicitis and said Surgery was the only way and it had to be done fast.... I personally insisted that we go do a test elsewhere since everyone I know said Appendicitis is a gradual ailment and the pains come from a particular side of the belly...Low and behold ...the tests revealed it was Acute Thyphoid. To cut the story short...that stewpid Dr could have as well done a Surgery for an ailment the poor boy didnt have, inflicted unnecessary pains on him and still yet risk the boys life. What do we call that Incompetence or what I for one person believe until the educational, infrastructural and medical system is enhanced in this country ...we are still a childs play since a lot of graduates have Cashificates and not Certificates.

Thanks a lot for your comment. I lost my mum as a result of this same kidney disease in 2008 and that's when I knew that nothing is here in Nigeria . The greatest they could offer is the palliative and expensive dialysis procedure . Two teaching hospitals were managing here as at then in which Teaching Hospital Ife was one of them. How many dialysis machines are there in all these so called Teaching Hospitals. Who are even the specialists in Nigeria? The disease is far worst than any known diseases, though it's sometimes managed in developed countries. It's a sickness too complex to handle here in Nigeria . It is worst than cancer or HIV. The only prayer we should be praying to God is that we shall not fall victim and for those affected, God shall touch them with His healing hands.

I never said Nigerian doctors, if given the requisite training and experience, cannot perform these surgeries. What I have said is that Nigeria lacks the schools to provide world class training and lacks the infrastructure.

That Nigerian doctors fare well in Caribbean and USA is old news. Many of these Nigerian doctors are either trained abroad or received additional abroad before they got their foreign licenses. We are not talking about what Nigerian doctors are doing overseas; we are talking about what they are doing at home.

Many patients in Nigeria have to travel to India for surgeries because the expertise at home is lacking. And most, if not all, Nigerian doctors who have the expertise to perform these surgeries are abroad making big money.

I would advise to do kidney transplant in the US...if you can afford it...and afford the necessary follow ups.I would not be so concerned about the ability of the local surgeon since he is trained abroad. My biggest would be with the supporting cast...do I really need a kidney transplant?...is the replacement kidney really a match?...is it disease free?...what about after care?...is there efficient monitoring equipment to show how well the kidney is functioning?...is the staff well trained and competent for after care? ...are the necessary drugs readily available to suppress rejection and whatever other issues may arise? These are issues that need to be seriously addressed. Saying how many surgeries have been done means nothing if there is no success rate or stats on how well the patients do and for how long. After all...kidney transplant is not like changing an alternator of a car...pull out and plug in.Your life your choice...if you have the money.

I think if people living here cant even feel they can get adequate basic healthcare treatment then how the heck are they going to submit themselves to open surgery like you described. I am sure there are very competent doctors here in Nigeria but the problem is deciphering them from the ones who are not! I have recently heard of two people who went abroad for a second opinion, one of them went straight to A & E as a result. I also know of one death which was a clear case of medical negligence. There is a distinct lack of trust and I have been told many times by many people if I get very ill ... leave the country! Having attended hospital quite a few times for minor issues with my kids I know why. In general there is a lack of customer care and attention in how patients are attended to here. As you sit with the doctor they are usually taking a phone call, addressing someone who has just walked into the room randomly or looking at you with the look of sheer boredom. And yes, I attend one of the very best hospitals here, supposedly. This is not confined to the healthcare sector. It is prevalent everywhere I go and everywhere I find myself a 'customer.' The banks are the worst, eye contact is not even made and they slope off walking very slowly to get whatever paper work. THIS is the issue. The attitude is insipid. And it is real.
