I really do not understand my people anymore, what exactly is the protest going to be about? Nigerians are easily swayed by emotions so much so that they protest and fight without even understanding the issues at hand. The senate never passed any law legalizing child marriage, the section of the constitution in question is one dealing with renounciation of citiznship. This is the section in question;


Section 29 of the 1999 Constitution says:

1) Any citizen of Nigeria of full age who wishes to renounce his Nigerian citizenship shall make a declaration in the prescribed manner for the renunciation.

(2) The President shall cause the declaration made under subsection (1) of this section to be registered and upon such registration, the person who made the declaration shall cease to be a citizen of Nigeria.

(3) The President may withhold the registration of any declaration made under subsection (1) of this section if-

(a) the declaration is made during any war in which Nigeria is physically involved; or

(b) in his opinion, it is otherwise contrary to public policy.

(4) For the purposes of subsection (1) of this section.

(a) “full age” means the age of eighteen years and above;

(b) any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age.


From the above, I do not how the above relate to child marriage or child bride.

The keyword is the bolded section which states for the purposes of subsection 1 of this section. This simply means any woman who is married is deemed to the of full age for the purpose of renounciation of Nigerian citizenship. It did not specify when a child becomes a woman and it definitely did not specify an age when a female child can marry, drink alcohol, vote, drive and any other age restricted activity.

Even if senator yerima feels this section validates his child marriage to a minor, it does not, because I assume the age of marriage is specified by another law.


So the question we should be asking is at what age does a female child become a woman and at what age is a woman allowed to marry in Nigeria. Also what age can a person able to sign a contract and be held responsible for their actions.

These are the relevant aspects of the constitution we should be debating and not at that age a woman can renounce her citizenship.


In addition, the law itself is very stupid and irrelevant. does it mean a nigerian woman married to a nigerian can renounce her citizenship or it refers to a nigerian woman married to a foreigner? I beg I need a learned person to educate me on the practicality of this subsection of the constitution as it relates to women.

A girl's body isn't mature enough to cope with pregnancy until she is, at least, sixteen. So menstruation is not maturity but the beginning of a process. To marry her off means the following:
1. she can develop VVF and you can't just say "na so Allah want am"
2. she may die in pregnancy. The rate of women dying in pregnancy in Nigeria is high and the North is contributing 80% of that figure. With child brides, you can understand why
3. she cannot get a good education. Without a good education, she can't get a good job or learn a trade. Or even know basic hygiene to take care of herself and her children.
