Population Statistics Of Lagos British Colony In 1891 by TonySpike: 4:03pm On Sep 01, 2013
This is from the many private documentations compiled by archivist Pa Oloko Alli-Balogun, an octogenarian from Lagos.

The population of Lagos Colony was analysed into 'Yoruba' and 'Non-Yoruba' tribes:

1. Eko tribe had fallen from 57% in 1872 to 23.6% 20 years later.
2. Popo or Egun tribe was 15.85%,

3. Other Yoruba groups
Oyo - 11.6%
Ijebu - 11.01%
Awori - 9.26%
Egba - 6.05%
Ijesha - 4.32%
Egbado - 3.63%
Ekiti/Efon people - 1.76%

4. Non-Yoruba groups
Nupe/Tapa - 1.86%
Hausa - 1.86%
The Kru - 1.37%.

The strength of the Eko tribe was concentrated in Wards A, B, C and D of Lagos Town and Harbour, and the Central District of Ebute Metta/Yaba.

The Aworis were concentrated in the Central District and the Popo's or Egun in the Western District.

It's extra-ordinary that this population statistics was undertaken as the end of the Yoruba Kiriji wars approached circa 1892/93. The representation is quite astonishing. I'd like us to keep this thread clean of inter-tribal jibes...thanks.

Isn't lagos colony the same thing as today's south west with little or no difference? I think the whole yoruba south west as we know it today, was once called lagos colony, they were never part of southern nigeria, until they were amalgamated with southern Nigeria, they are an appendage to the people of the east and edo, just as the bamenda people later became an appendage to eastern nigeria. Yorubas were not southern nigerians from the beginning.

You guys are mistaking lagos colony, which roughly means same thing as southwest of today, for lagos the city that later became an administrative capital when colony of lagos( present day southwest) became amalgamated with southern nigeria( edo and eastern region). That was the first amalgamation, before the north-south amalgamation, it was a disaster that joined the fate of the harmonious people of the eastern block with that of people of lagos colony( southwest).

The relevance is that until the amalgamation of the people of lagos colony( today's southwest) with the people of southern nigeria( today's SE and SS) with the relocation of our capital from calabar to lagos, the igboman really had no reason to be in lagos colony in large numbers.

Crying and gnashing of teeth is coming soon from the East, the Niger side cry babies! No need to mention names but notice that the Hausa and Benin who were recorded to have been or near the Yoruba SW at the time of this publications will not cry. Going to work and home is different for them, they love their lands so much that if gold were to grow from the ground anywhere else they may grab some but still want only their lands. The Benin, some of them cousins of the Yorubas, were there too, enjoy and contribute to the progress of our lands, it doesn't mean they are ready to pass-up their own inheritance, their lands just east of the Yoruba SW. But the cry babies, they hate their land, they would do anything to get the lands of others. It is time we tell them the truth and that they are no longer wanted!

Again, is amalgamation or what ever southern thing you are talking the topic of discussion? Please don't derail the thread with your unsolicited and irrelevant history lecture..

The excerpt just describes what most people in NL agree with.

Benin Empire took part in the original settlement of Lagos, followed the Brazilian slave returnees, and then native Yorubas.

What is the point of this thread?

And this has indirectly proven that the increased numbers of non-Yorubas in later years was because of Lagos being the capital city in Nigeria.

Not due to "hospitality" and all that Jazz.

I have also read that the number of Yorubas in the SE equaled that of Igbos in the SW in the earlier years.

No this is not true. The Colony of Lagos refers to Lagos Island,Ikoyi Victoria Island up to Ebute Metta. In fact it does not cover the whole of Lagos State as we know it today.
I suggest you read this ;
http://libsysdigi.library.illinois.edu/ilharvest/Africana/Books2011-05/3064634/3064634_1898_lagos/3064634_1898_lagos_opt.pdf

e.g There are significant parts of Lagos State today e.g Epe.Ikorodu that were and still are Ijebu territory. These were part of the Western Region after independence, added to Lagos State in 1967 and were never part of the FEDERAL CAPITAL.
The British produced annual reports on THE COLONY OF LAGOS such as this one in `1898 but I do not have time now to paste images of the report.Any one who has time can help us or even create a thread.
After establishing the Colony of Lagos in 1861 the British sought to trade with the rest of Yorubaland but faced obstruction from the Ijebus and eventually subdued them militarily in 1892 as they did with other parts of the interior
.These were generally referred to as the "Protectorate of the Western Province" and then The Colony and Protectorate of Western Province . Ilaro e.g was subdued in 1893,Ilorin in 1897 etc.

The Colony of Lagos came about by an entirely different Treaty agreement to that with other places in Yorubaland(Protectorate}

If the British had not conquered the Ijebus in 1891 I do not see how an 1891 Census could be referring to SW Nigeria

That is one possibilty but logically not the only one.
Other logical one may be
The establishment of a seaport with the growth of international trade
The creation of "Nigeria" and the facilitation of movement after all this increased numbers is observed not only in Lagos but in PH eg also Kano Benin etc also the population of Lagos seems to have double AFTER the Capital was moved. From all indications what has made Lagos is the Port at Lagos. Nigeria has not been able to establish a similar port elsewhere on its rather long coastline
