Every Nigerian, from rich to poor, from Igbo to Edo, from yoruba to Ijaw, from Hausa to Tiv should be on the street protesting this outrage. Oh, from PDP to APC to LP to APGA should atnd up and condemn this act.

5000 less than $40!

They buried a prisoner, not even a phone call to his family? No hope for Nigeria.

Autopsies are mandated by law for anyone who dies in state custody. The prison authorities have broken the law by burying him without one. In a sane country, this would be investigated and somebody in the prisons service will go to jail.

Of course, this is Nigeria so nothing will happen. The police whose job it is to investigate have plenty of reasons not to interfere when a sister agency is trying to cover up a suspicious death.

My advise to the family is to exhume the man, hire their own private pathologist to do an autopsy and release the results to the press. The only way to get any justice in Nigeria is to embarrass the government into action.

What a useless country and a useless family members!!!
You can imagine, the whole family cannot contribute N5,000 to save their brother from going to prison.

Keneking: This is the problem of poverty, ordinary five thousand naira fine, a common man can not afford. Unfortunately, the rich keeps getting richer and the poor gets poorer. What would the government tell the family? If this case gets to court, what kind of judgement is expected? No hope for the common man. Great Injustice to Mankind! Oya Oga Oshiomole na your territory be this, pls respond accordingly. By the way, pole position for the 2nd time.

Approx £20.00. What a shame. Where is that idiotic Edo senator who can't communicate but is celebrated by Nigerians as Dr Grammar or whatever you guys call him. He is said to be a lawyer, let him come out and take up this case. Are there no human rights lawyers doing pro bono in Naija to help the deceased family fight this case in court?

Oh my beloved Gani if only you were alive, you woul have taken on the battle for justice. Where are the human rights advocates/lawyrrs? Gone to sleep? May the God of justice fight for you from the great beyond.

All the sentiments expressed so far really touch my heart, but one question that continues to bother me is: where were these now agitating family members when their brother was sentenced to two weeks imprisonment with an option of a N5,000 fine? Could they all not have come together to raise the fine? It's like the scenario of a mad man who is left wandering in the streets, howling monogues at the sky. The day he gets accidentally knocked down by a vehicle is the day you'd know he has an 'owner'! Believe me, their brother would have appreciated this solidarity more when he was alive than now when he is no more. Now they're busy spending transport fare and buying petrol to go to Benin Prisons. Those monies could have salvaged their brother from all this in the first place. We pay less interest in the affairs of others, especially when they're poor. No one wants to come near a poor man. A rich man is everybody's friend! Only poor men (and women) die like this. Sad. Sad. Sad... I still commend the family members though for raising their voices. This is Nigeria. Like most projects in it, I only hope this one too will not fail...

Poverty might have made him prefer 2 weeks in prison to parting with his hard earned N5000, but poverty did not kill this man.

Heartlessness, callousness and greed on the part of law enforcement killed him. Mans inhumanity to man is what killed him. Nigeria is a completely and utterly failed state. This just keeps repeating itself. The people meant to serve and protect are the very people who will end your life for you without blinking.

How can he allegedly have fallen ill and you don't contact family. He dies and you still don't contact them. He is buried and nobody knows. Which doctor saw him? what was the cause of death? What a completely and utterly f*** up society . Two weeks in prison for a minor misdemeanor ended his life........a bloody Nigerian prison.

Comments on this thread reflect the society's disdain for poor people. Your life has no meaning in this God forsaken country if there's no money in your pocket!!

That body should be exhumed and an autopsy conducted ASAP

Gaddafi’s son docked for crimes against humanity

TRIPOLI (AFP) – Seif al-Islam, son of slain Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, appeared in court Thursday in Zintan west of Tripoli on security charges in a trial that was adjourned until December, a lawyer said.
“Seif al-Islam Gaddafi appeared before the Zintan court that decided to adjourn the trial until December 12 to allow the attendance of other accused in the case,” the lawyer who was present in court told AFP.

This happens always,it is just unfortunate that the right authority pays no attention.
It is even bad enough that his family didn't see the body.
May his soul rest in peace.
