phantom: Highly skilled ko. Nigerians still flock to india for the most elemental treatment. Your next defence will now be that government is underfunding the health sector, yet the same is producing "highly skilled" doctors according to you. The gamble has backfired. Maybe if the resident doctors start sponsoring themselves, they might start enjoying better welfare than what the tax payers are offering. 3 Likes |

Lightening: Yes funding is an issue. We do not have enough diagnostic and theraputic equipment in our teaching hospitals. We do not have enough EKG,Dialysis machines,CAT scans,Monitors....even beds and hospital buildings. That is part of the reason why NARD is on strike. The gamble has backfired. Maybe if the resident doctors start sponsoring themselves, they might start enjoying better welfare than what the tax payers are offering. If the health sector funding does not increase....expect increases in fees at government hospitals. 4 Likes |

EHoudini: I learnt from experience that most doctors are inherently insecure. Strip them of title; they got nothing left: blank, pathetic n lost! Have those ever travel out of the see what's obtainable else? They should the statusque is simply not sustainable. Thumbs up gej. God bless nigeriamaybe in the past , most of the present day doctors are into other things as well... dr sid, that bariyu and dog comedian, dr jamoo and several others are not even using their medical degrees to feed anymore , they found other passions which is paying off. More than 50% of the guys i finished up with are no longer into medicine but into other things- business, info tech, pastoral work, even into lecturing... all man don wise up now. If these chaps remain sacked they will always find their levels -some have already passed some exams abroad and are just waiting to become consultants and travel out. others will merge and start a specialist clinic, some already have masters degree and will move to lecturing and several other possibilities. The poor common man will just continue to suffer!! the doctor will always have a way of saving their own families in cases of sickness even if the case is too complex for him to manage, other doctors will rally round and come to his aid. 8 Likes |

[quote author=Chaleeee] For basic medical training...yes.But for the advanced stuff...that is where the problem is. And it all boils down to funding. Indeed if we had the facilities....we would be able to train better residents....and better doctors. My friend Victor has been at home since Dec. Graduate and inducted from OAU last year and he's not gotten a place to do his house job......all because some resident doctors won't work and won't let others work. Again, that has to do with the fact that we do not have enough teaching hospitals( yes...that is true!).Not the residents(who would be happy to have lots of housemen around...more people to boss ). At which point I quote a maxim of one of my former bosses.....Every state in Nigeria is supposed to have five teaching hospitals. Sorry about your friend Victor....I too had to wait six months before I got my first house job. Spaces are limited (and every hospital has a allocated limit of doctors it should take for house job....which if it exceeds ...gets it queried by the Ministry of Health....this happened in the hospital where I did my housejob....Ministry thought they took too many.). P.S- Victor should spread his wings .....even the North may be a good option. 2 Likes |

Q rhymz: Can people stop twisting the facts and reality on ground.... residents are not even licensed doctors so what is this talk about the hospitals coming to a halt because medical graduate trainees have been sacked. Are you guys for real. With or without Resident docs, the teaching hospitals can run fine, all the management need to do is make little changes and tweaks here and there. The absence of residents can not stop a hospital from running, for God's sake these guys are a little above the medical students.your ignorance is out of this world...I pity you 7 Likes |

I am a med student about to finish and by God who made me, I cannot see myself working in Nigeria. The health system is in shambles that is ill equipped and hardly regulated. Doctors are not the cause of our problems. The govt that has neglected our healthcare of Nigerian citizens for decades has made the system so rotten beyond repair. If I was a doctor in Nigeria, I will demand over a million naira as salary because it is haaaarrrrrddddd to do your job without the proper equipment under unsanitary conditions. They are not greedy, but are demanding compensation for all the chaos around them. The system begets who they are. Nobody wants to upgrade the health system because the corruption has eaten way too deep. Any challenge to the status quois met with resistance in the form of sack of the residents. Normal nations are supposed to spend I think about 25% of budget on healthcare as advices by WHO. I am very sure we don't even spend up to 10% and even then, not all of it gets to where it is needed. Anyways sha, as usual the govt will see the error of their ways and reverse this nonsense. And I will be here sipping my tea. 5 Likes |

Nigerian doctors have outlived their usefulness. Medicine is a calling like policing and soldiering. There should be no room for strike. Anyone not comfortable with that should go join some other profession. Doctors-most of whom are rude, pompous and antagonistic to their hapless patients-should know that the blood of the dead during their stupid strikes will be upon their head. Their sack stays. 3 Likes |

I tell you!!!! The annoying thing is that doctors see themselves as mini-gods that shd be worshipped. Is that d kind of training that should be accepted and glorified? With dis recent stand of d FG, they have to thread carefully else, everything will backfire on them. As far as I am concerned, those who are ready to work should work, and those not ready to work can go to hell for all I care. Enough of all this nonsense! The strike is long overdue and now, has. Become meaningless. Let those who have ears, hear.... |

abbakacici: Nigeria has 20 teaching hospitals, 18 Specialty Hospitals and 22 Federal Medical Centres. so based on your logic you believed that Nigeria cant have 16000 resident doctors. let used basic 1) residency is usually 5-8 years . hospital have like 20-30 unitsAfter all has been said the reality on ground still if the govt is responsible for training 95% of resident doctors you should know that its a dumb practice. Private hands should come in and fill in the remaining space. We have very few doctors in Nigeria, and the few doctors available prefer working for the govt because that's where they can get easy and sustained source of income. Govt really has to reform health care in this country and the best way to start is to reduce the workforce in her direct employ. A situation where a teaching hospital gets annual allocation from the govt that they cannot generate internally in 3 years is totally unacceptable. Do you know that majority of the docs with 1 year post nysc experience lack a lot of skills and the residency program provides an opportunity for them to enhance their skill set and productivity? So know from today that the relationship between the resident docs and their employer is supposed to be a win win relationship and the govt/employer holds all the aces. Without residency training where you and I present ourselves as guinea pigs for the training of docs the docs can never improve their skills. |

Samgreguc: sammie, how many consultants are in nigeria? sammie,i hope you know senior reghistrars are already specialists? infact in some institutions in some countries, you can be employed as a specialist with your part 1 cert...i hope you know? sammie, you of all people should know that MOs are no match for resident doctors anyday. infact,it is even easier for the govt to sack consultants than residents IF saving money is their wahala. i am an SR and i know the amount of responsibility i carry in the hospital. i supervise junior regs and i have to be around when the consultant comes for rounds. infact in my department, some consultants will not teach or review cases if the SR in their unit is not around. when SRs are fully on ground, consultants have far less issues. fact!!! sammie,if you get to a teaching hospital by 3 or 4am, you will meet residents on ground. true or false?? 5 Likes |

Some pple don't understand d issues. Sacking resident docs, is like sacking every doctor. All doctors are bound by the Hippocratic oath_ nobody will dare apply for any new job opening. Fashola was used . . . he employed locum docs..... what happened later ? He recalled d sacked docs, but the new locum docs, refused to be disengaged. . . . meaning more docs on state employment. If Fashola dared sack d locum guys, when next there will be strike & u call for locum, nobody will listen to u. . . they will say u wanna use and dump. GEJ has started what he can't finish. Consultants and medical officers will NOT start work, and they can't be sacked by fiat becos they are PERMANENT CIVIL SERVICE STAFF. And. . . . what are we even saying ? Assuming some young, inexperienced docs go n apply, no matter how few. . . do u want to entrust ur LIFE onto them ? And assuming d experienced docs, resident docs etc are frustrated to return to work against their will..........will u entrust ur LIFE on a group of embittered docs who are so angry with d nigerian populace who didn't back them ? plz go back and read my opening sentence again. 4 Likes |

ozodigboo: Some pple don't understand d issues. nigerians dont even know who reisdent doctors are.. your pregnant wife goes into a very difficult labour and needs a C/S by 3am,you drive to the TH or FMC,you meet a resident doctor you go to OBGYN....those doctors that run your antenatals and clinics are resident doctors you go to paediatrics....those doctors you see at the clinics, wards are resident doctors your baby is in special care baby unit, that person that gives your baby drugs by 2am while you are still sleeping is a resident you need surgery, that doctor that assists the main surgeon is a resident you go to radiology department, that doctor you see scanning, reading your xrays/CTs or perfoming an HSG,MCUG is a resident you go to ophthalmology department, the doctors who check your eyes are residents. if the hospitals are vehicles, residents are the engine! 6 Likes |

Nigeria health system is finished. Because even if the doctor goes back to work, after witnessing all these bashings. . . . . They will now operate and carry out their work, in a cold calculating way without feelings and emotions - possibly with a tinge of bitterness. This is not going to look good. 2 Likes |
