Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has put together 150 youths from across the three senatorial zones of the state to handle a daily road maintenance project.

The youths were fully trained and equipped to see to the maintenance of roads in all the streets and towns in Anambra State in south-east Nigeria.

Speaking at an event in Awka, Governor Obiano said that the initiative was to enhance good roads and safety of lives.

He added that it would also extend the life span of vehicles plying the roads, stressing that there would not be jerks and bumps.

The Governor promised that the youths would be adequately remunerated, but he reminded them to work diligently.

He called on the 21 Local government administrations to be involved and give their support to the youths to make the laudable project work.

Governor Obiano also stressed that the project would be beneficial to the citizens of the state.

He also inspected the mode of operation to ascertain the professionalism of the workers.

After the inspection, he expressed satisfaction with their performance.

In his speech, the Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Azubuike Iloh, said the project would elevate the state to having the best of roads when fully operational at a minimum cost.

The Commissioner for Works, Lawrence Chinwuba, also told the gathering that the project would help in the area of youth empowerment.

To ensure a smooth take off, the Anambra State government also procured different equipment to tackle the job headlong from the simple tools of barrows, head pans and rakes, to the mechanised equipment of cutters, cement mixers, buses, tankers and earth-moving machines.

This is a great move towards solving the problem of our streets looking horrible.
I wish they can teach the boys how to make concrete roads or use of interlocking bricks to make roads.Concrete roads last longer, does not require heavy complicated machines to make and requires a couple of men to pave.

I hope they will put functional street lights along the entire section of the expressway passing through Awka.
Ebonyi state did it, so i hope Anambra will.

In fact some of those pictures were originally posted with very disgusting comments about other Igbo states anyway.

Obiano should make sure that any building which is not up to date in beauty arround both sides of the road should be forced to modernise or give way for a proper structure to come up!.(pix)14 Storey House at Umuchukwu Orumba-South Lga of Anambra State!

The Government should reserve such location for investors with requirement for such Building. They are usually by the dual carriage roads in major cities, just like the Awaka Fly over etc.


The key is to Build with an Urban regeneration blue print. Be specific about where certain kinds of houses can be positioned. This will save you the trouble of having to build and demolish later to make way for something taller.

These kind of structure require the government to invest in steel production. I understand Anambra has Iron that can be converted into steel.

It is wise to get Ibeto or Innoson or a combination of entrepreneur to invest in steel production. At least they will make money from investment in such building by FDI. They will consider it cheaper to by locally made steel.

We should not get trapped in the mentality of limiting the growth of our cities to where they started almost 100 years ago.

We should instead think forward by creating new frontiers of development by allowing the cities to expand into new well planned areas. That is precisely how brazil has been developing itself. We have ample areas such as the Greenwood estate where we can create a modern CBD with 12 storey building. No need wasting energy in futility fighting people over their property to demolish it and build multistorey buildings.

When i look around our cities i see so much undeveloped space, yet our people complain of lack of land and want to go build in the north. Just a few bridges over tiny streams are needed to open up these areas. I wonder why we can't build those bridges to open up these areas. Our people are being forced to restrict development in the same already built up and congested areas of Onitsha and Awka.

I am glad our people have been building in all the towns such as Umuchukwu or Abatete etc, instead of concentrating everything inside Onitsha or Awka
