Hi evrybody,
My name is Sergio, I am from Republic of Moldova
Eastern Europe
I amvery interested in fish farming and I am convenced that it is going to be a very profitable business here in my country, I mean the law enviroment is favorable no export taxes and many other advantages
Cheap labour force, $150 per mont
I am looking for a person who would be interested ti invest in African Clarias farming, it is a very popular fish in Europe and it's white meat is expensive it is about $6/kg
I have a lot of land, management experience and University diploma in Economy major "Banks and Stock Exchanges"
I think the investition here will give much more profit then in any other country
There is a technology of water recycling which helps to economise a lot, the water consumption is 1 cubic meter for 10 tones of fish.
I just need a person who is interested and who really wants to invest in a profitable affair
Waiting for your cals or emails

Re: Fish Farming Business by moleepaiko(m): 5:34pm On Feb 15, 2008
Hello guys,
Its about a year since I came on here and posted my impression about the growth in fish farming business in Nigeria. From that time till now, I am very happy with the exchange of ideas and the sustained interest in fish farming in Nigeria. It goes to say that Obasanjo may have been wrong in several other decisions he made when he was president, but banning importation of fresh fish was certainly not one of them, in my opinion.
I want to however sound notes of causion to beginers. Some come into the fish farming bussiness with their minds already made up, so they hardly want to get or pay for consultancy, untill all of their initial capital is lost. Some like to run the bussiness cheap and would always pop into fora like this, post a question or two and hope that answers given to them would solve their problems. It is more than that!
I have also read where people who keep a pond with 100 fish call themselves fish farmers. It is all good, but we must always try to know what we are doing so that when we offer advise, it will be taken seriously.
Without showing off (just setting the records straight), I am a Ph.D student researcher in Aquaculture nutrition in USM Malaysia. I have expertise in fin fish culture, from Catfish through Tilapia to exotic breeds that we are even considering bringing into Nigeria from Malaysia (Bagrid Catfish, Channa striatus, Iridescent shark to mention but a few). I have conducted experiments (and still do) in so many aquaculture systems (Glass aquarium, round fiberglass tanks, rectangular fiberglass tanks, concrete or cement ponds, earthen ponds, canvass tanks) wether in the conventional batch system or recirculatory and have conducted experiments (still do also) with lavae, fries, fingerlings, adult fish and broodstock. I can confidently tell you that every culture system one operates with every type of fish you keep need carefull manipulation, because each is different in its own way. Its all up to you.
You need to be PROPERLY INFORMED about what you do or intend to do.
As for capital, most people feel that they can just get a bank loan of 2million naira and jump into the trade and VOILA! their capital will tripple in a matter of 6months, OH! NO! It is always better to start on a small scale, learn the trade from the scratch as much as posible, using an old hand in the trade who will mentor you (at an agreed fee anyway) and then gradually expand to the capacity you can handle. It is safer, easier (even though tedious) and more advisable. Better to learn on an already established farm than using your capital to build one (which may not be standard at the begining anyway).
As to feeds (this is the trickiest part, it is over 60% of the whole trade), you have to be carefull what you buy as feed or as feed ingredient. Most of the nutrition labels we have on fish feed are nothing but a hoax. I recall here in Malaysia, we had an undergraduate do a re-evaluation of the nutrition labels of about 15 fish feed manufacturers' products. All he did was take 1 kilo sample of the newest batch of fish feed and confirm the proximate composition levels of protein, lipids, energy and vitamins + Minerals. Wallahi only 2 companies had a comparative 90-100% acuracy of what they claimed was in the feed, the rest fell below 50% of their claim!. Now in Malaysia, regulations are stright and penalties stiff but these companies were still cheating, what more of Nigeria? NAFDAC is trying, but they have a compact schedulle, few staff! (Evaluating the number of genuine Pure water manufacturers is enough job for them as it is now, no insults just facts!).
For those who plan farming big, power is a consideration (NEPA or PHCN still continue to be a nightmare, diesel and petrol continue to be a problem, both in scarcity and price). Many people are told the LIE that catfish dont need to be aerated (Yes they can survive at the poorest level of dissolved oxygen), but what about their growth? In our lab, we conducted a research (and published in high impact jornals) on the effects of continuous aeration on growth performance for about 5 breed of fish, including catfish and tilapia. Wallahi, there is a significant effect between fish grown with continuous aeration and those without, and this translates into Naira!
I always get this passion when I am writting about fish. For those who are interested, there is a catfisfarmersnig forum in Yahoogroups. I am subscribed there, its an open forum so you can come in and lets share ideas and answer your questions. Keep the flag flying.
Grab your nets and lets go fishing guys, Nigerians need and deserve more proteins.
May Allah save Nigeria!

I would like to start fish farming in a town like ilesa , I have about 3 plots of land but little cash to start do u advise i use plastic tanks
thanks
Re: Fish Farming Business by moleepaiko(m): 5:54pm On Feb 16, 2008
Bodik,
why dont you spend part of that money to learn the rudiments of the trade first?
I will advise you look for an established fish farm that is in production year round. Arrange to pay and learn the basics of aquaculture practice for like 6months; which means you will be there when a batch of fingerlings or fries are stocked and reared to grow-outs. During the 6months period, you would learn how to clean the tanks, change the water, monitor water quality, feed the fish and monitor the growth performance of the fish. It is also a good time for you to learn how to keep your log book about fish farm management as it pertains to expenses and how to calculate average cost of a fish. You will also learn about feed formulation, alternative feed ingredients and a host of other little things like fish diseases and emergency procedure when you run into trouble.
After all that, you can then decide to start on your own by managing some few fiberglass or plastic tanks of fish in your backyard or anywhere close by first for like 2 or more batches. Once you become confident that you are set to begin on a larger scale, only then will I advise that you develop your plots and build either cement ponds or earthen ponds as the case may be. It all depends on you.
I always advise people to take it easy first untill they learn the tricks of the trade before they expand.
It is however also posible to start full scale and be successfull, but you have the marketting bit to contend with. It would be dissastrous to have market sized fish and then you are looking for a market to dispose them. I know those market women will eat you raw, once they know you are a novice. Ask some experienced farmers, they will share their experiences with you.
Good Luck!
May Allah save Nigeria!

Considering the amount of people going into farming in nigeria-SW especially, is the business still profitable or what effect does this have on your profit for those already into the business?

For those already in the business what other related products or service do you offer, do you grow crops on you land or something else?

on two plots of land for example do you fence it off, like a warehouse with workers coming in and out or is this usually incorporated into your building/houses or are they open fields?

Re: Fish Farming Business by talk2cash(m): 5:55pm On Jun 22, 2009
Hello my follows investor,

i want to  contribute to this discussion at hand before i jump to the next business opportunity.
Fish Farming business is not all that expensive as above friends are really explaining it.

I want to say a poor man can start fish farming and a rich man can also start fish farming and yet all will make money.

I don't think running a fish farming is not something hard or expensive because I have 10 ponds which I started with N800,000 and I stock fishes which is 9000 fishes, but it is based on I have the money at hand  and I wanted to make it big.
Don't even shout Wow!!!

I have also do it for others starting with N150,000 and the last one I did cost N80,000 and even with N40,000  you can still start it based on the level you want. As I’m writing this post i sold fish in one pond today which i got N320600.00 about 4months and two weeks fishes. Which some is 1kg to 2.5kg weight for one fish and average is 8kg. Then you can now multiply with the 1000 fishes i put in the pond. That is 0.8 weights x 1000 = 800kg weight x N400 a kilo which I sell. N320, 000.00. I spent N98, 00 to feed them.

You can now calculate my gain for selling fishes in one pond; you will see that it is a very lucrative investment for one to do. What about the remaining 8 ponds. I which I’m still going to sales. That mean if a pond is N320,000 x 9 ponds = N2,880,000 which N2.9 million naira within 5 months for a year you have make N5.8 million naira in Fish farming. That is exactly what I’m going to get this year with only N800,000 which I started fish farming business with. There are also secret of what and what to use to that you can sstart selling your fish within 4 months and it will be from weight 8kg to 4 kg.

Fish Farming is a very lucrative business is you have good person who is ready to give you a full details on how to go about it. If you mean business you can give me a call and we can explain in details how go about it and I can even come and set it up for you in your state. But if you invest small money in fish farming should be expecting a small profit which would take about 4-6 months if you follow the instructions.

I will show you an alternative to for TANK which you will not spent up to that or even half the money.
But Tank can cost you say approximately N150, 000k provided you have a steady supply of water
2000fingerlings is approximately =30, 000 at 15naira each
Feeding can be N150, 000 highest.

1kg goes for 400naira and with proper feeding you would get them to a size of about 0.8 kg to 2kg in a period of 4months to 6months.

But my dear you don’t need to keep money up to that before you start fish farming because if you look that or people talk you will actually think that you need up to that for a start. But if you have an alternative sources of money. You can start with a little and you money from others sources to feeding your fish because feeding and waters are the most one number thing in fish farming. My e-book on fish farming is available and video DVD on Live Fish Farming. How to start fish farming business and how to feed fish, time , if sickness what kind of drugs to give fish, what kind of feeds available and many more… Ok you can give me a call 08038382314
