So sorry I had to take down the amazing story of the Paedtric intensivists. She reached out and wanted it taken down for some reasons but it will be up as soon as we sort out a few things... Hopefully. 4 Likes 1 Share |

" Last year, one of the boys I taught in this school came around. He bought many books for the school and hired a tractor to mow the grass. I was really proud, I took him round the classes and used him as an example to motivate the pupils. He went to this same abandoned school and he worked hard and became successful. I told them they too can become successful if they read their books and work hard. This is my joy as a teacher, to see my students grow up and become something in life. Sadly, the grasses are back and so will the snakes and when it rains heavily, the water level reaches the chest and we have to evacuate the students and move to another school temporary. I hope government remembers our school soon." 14 Likes 4 Shares

"I told my father I'm tired of going to school, told him I don't see myself doing all these government work or any work someone can just wake up and decide to sack you. He asked me what I wanted to do and I told him I wanted to learn handwork, he agreed and gave me the go ahead. I've finished learning and will soon open my own workshop. I do get worried sometimes and I pray to be successful so I don't have any reason to regret my decision." 18 Likes 5 Shares

I started a fish farm in 1999 while in Jr secondary school. I started with a few hundred fishlings and my farm has grown over the years and I have over 5 thousand fishes now. I studied journalism and worked briefly at Lagos state television but it affected my time in the farm and I couldn't just let go of my fishes. I think I've become attached and have some sort of emotional connection to my fishes. Watching and feeding them everyday, that transition from fishlings to adults fascinates me. HOL: How does one become attached to fishes? is it the same kind of attachment one shares with their pets? I can't really explain how it works but I just know there is this connection. It's not like I have a particular fish I've kept with me for years , I do sell them off. HOL: Do you cry when your fishlings die? I don't know if I'm supposed to admit I've cried because of a fish but let me share this with you. One evening I wanted to withdraw money from the atm and get fish food but for some reason the atm refused to pay and that was the only bank in my area. I couldn't get feed for the fishes and had no one to borrow from. I came back to the pond and all the fishes rushed to the front as they do when I bring food for them but this time I didn't bring any food. I stood there looking at them, I didn't know how to explain to them I couldn't get their food. I too couldn't eat that night I stood vigil there watching them and waiting for day break so I can go and get there food." 30 Likes 7 Shares

"My girlfriend left me 4 years ago, we started dating when we were in JS3 and we planned to get married as soon as we finish Uni and get good jobs. After graduation and NYSC I applied for jobs but didn't get any. I had this childhood friend, he already had a job and was doing well. We were not that close but we grew up in the same area and went to school together at some point so I consider him a friend and he knew I was dating my girl. One day, my girlfriend told me he asked for her hand in marriage. I was very angry, he knew we were together and have intentions of getting married once I find my feet. Before I knew what was happening, he took drinks to her parents and they accepted him knowing fully well me and their daughter had plans. My girl cried and cried, she didn't want to get married to him but her parents pushed her and she eventually agreed. It was the lowest point of my life, I locked myself inside for weeks and even thought of committing suicide. She was the love of my life and it really affected me. I'll be 28 in a few weeks and the only thing that matters to me now is work, happiness and becoming a better man. They've been married for 4 years but she hasn't been able to conceive. She said her mum told her to go and beg me and ask for my forgiveness. I told her I have nothing against her, I wasn't ready and it wasn't her fault. I'm actually not happy she hasn't conceived and I do pray God Blesses their Union." 31 Likes 7 Shares

"I think I got my first drum when I was 5, my father made it for me. He too was a drummer and he told me his dad made him his first drum when he was about my age. It's a family tradition. I remember always sitting on the foot of his chair, listening attentively and trying to recreate the sounds he made. HOL: What's the biggest event you've played in? My troupe played in the Oba of Lagos's coronation. It was a privilege to play in such an occasion. I remember when we were in the bus from Oyo to the coronation, we always joked and laughed whenever we are going for an event but everybody was just silent that day it was a big day for all us." 13 Likes 1 Share

"I'm a pediatric intensivist; a doctor who takes care of seriously ill infants and children needing high-level care and monitoring in an ICU. Children who have trauma/ severe injuries, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, overwhelming infections, organ failure etc. We use mechanical ventilators and other advanced technologies to help children stay alive and recover from severe illness. It’s a relatively new specialty and, as far as I know, there are no other pediatric intensivists in Nigeria. Pediatric intensivists around the world tend to practice in places with advanced health systems. In the ten years I spent in the US, I always felt homesick. I thought the feeling would go away but it never did. When I was done training in the US and started working as a pediatric intensivist, I didn’t feel fulfilled at my job, it just didn’t feel like I was doing my life’s work. I was always looking for ways to take care of Nigerian children. Moving back home to Nigeria and working here seemed like a solution to both longings. HOL: What's the most meaningful thing you've done since you moved back? A few weeks after I arrived, I got a phone call from a pediatric heart surgeon who also moved back to Nigeria from the US. He told me about a 2 year old boy in Abuja who had undergone open-heart surgery to repair a very complex heart defect. The child remained in ICU for about 10 days, unconscious and on a ventilator and wasn’t getting better; he wondered if I could help. This was my specialty. I was very happy to help. I went out to Abuja and worked with the team to help take care of the child. He got better and is fine now, home with his family. It was very moving for me to be able to provide this sort of care to a child in Nigeria knowing that it’s a very specialized service that is not otherwise available in the country. It gave meaning to my move back home." 29 Likes 9 Shares

"My parents separated 2 years ago, I wasn't at home when he left, I went to school and when I came back I noticed the big TV and some other things were missing and I knew my dad had moved out. I don't think my presence would have made any difference, I kinda saw it coming. I stay with my mum, my dad still worships in our Church and I see him on Sundays. I think they are both happier since they separated. I did well in my SAT and I hope to get a scholarship from any of the schools I applied to. Tuition fees are expensive and I want to make things easier for my mum." 17 Likes 1 Share
