enuff work wahala - was up north last week kano to do a load audit. nothing complicated, my employer has entered into an nfr partnership with an eatery, and they have six branches in kano. operating costs must be shard between station dealers and the franchise. ideally, we should simply install watt hour meters, which will provide a truly fair method of divvying phcn and generator costs, but that proposal was vetoed years ago - (them no like to spend $ on engineering related stuff) so i have to adopt a slightly diff method - determine total electrical load of station tenants, then split it - Station 42%: eatery 58% , and recommend that operating costs be based on that. pretty simple when you get used to it- though thats because most of the stations up north are small affairs that can be done in under 15 mins. some of our mega stations in lag require an hour or more. today started off LOUSY we were running on inverter at home, when phcn decided to show face at 3.30 am. i went downstairs, switched over to phcn, only for the light to start flickering - with that buzz of partial contact coming from the nepa/alt power changeover. ( a month ago, the changover in the house gave up the ghost - annoyingly, the replacement seems to be one of the cheape imitations) had to get dressed etal by rechargeable light. just as i finished dressing, i noticed the small of poop in the room. there. no big deal - was poking mild fun at my son - when i realised that it had leaked out of his diapers and onto the bed - we lost over 20 minutes, what with madam washing him, and me cleaning the bedsheets.- still we made it into the office carpark in time to snag a parking space. most of this morning has been spent drawing up tender documents for some proposed internal renovations brb |

Hey Guys, was snowed in yesterday so got a compulsory snow holiday ;Das the trains were messed up and there was no way i was going to come in and get stranded.Sha braved it to get in today and am i glad i did.Kinda hectic but at least its better than letting all the work pile up and then coming in tomorow to backlog.Only 2 of us are in out of a team of 6. Been Kinda busy sha as faxes and emails have been flying in right left and centre and brokers, police and MIB do not understand that we are just 2 doing the work of 6 people. Was kinda getting stressed earlier but i have just taken a deep breath and have decided to do what i can do.My manager has also seen that the workload is much and has advised for me do what i can do as she does not want me falling ill again. Nice of them sha, they got us lunch for braving the odds to come in and na real odds.I amost fell down twice on my walk to and from the train station. The roads are so slippery i am even scared to think of my journey home as i am looking out the window and the ice does not seem to be melting.Thank God for wellie boots . I fashi chic this morn and wore ugly green wellie boots and put my heels in my bag.I just found it in one cupboard(guess it belongs to my sis in law) and it was in my size.I was fronting before when my hubby suggested that i wear them but bless him for the suggestion,it helped me gan.Gotta go now. |

Tollu,TKB, Cristalz and all my peeps, How una dey. Still havent had the time to unpack. Met with my 80+ years old client yesterday for like 3 hours. The baba gave a land brief that i had to refuse. The money is tempting but the amount of jazz (juju) involved in the case na another level. The party on the other side would go to any level to take out the opposition. 3 SANs don refuse the matter, who i be to collect am. Told the man i would think about it but me i am sure no way. I no want that kain money. Went for a meeting with a company trying to chance my client over his property in lekki. Solicitor on the other side was quite reasonable and we reached an amicable settlement of the matter.(hopefully). |

Re: Welcome To My Office by Cristalz(f): 8:36pm On Feb 04, 2009 |
@TKB Bros RCCG, you don forget say you dey fast? I know you're supposed to 'watch and pray' but dude you're doing way too much ''watching'' So how far with your strategies to raise funds for the real estate guru in partnership with the govt? Are you guys into sales of shares too? Y'all must do a lot of brain-storming for ideas that will actually fly in this depressing economy. @Jon Howz work going? Val dates dey o, it's making a choice that's the problem @Jericho You still haven't unpacked? This man, you must have a whole LOT of luggage Just kidding tho,I understand it's work. But just be determined to get it over and done with this weekend. . .clear your calendar for that. You've got to be organized at home to function best @ work, lol. And,how goes work? If you are not comfy with Baba and his money, best you stay away from it. There's nothing like having your peace of mind dearie, trust me. Reminds me of a day when this guy I opened an account for came to my bank one day and told me he needed his statement of account to take to the American Embassy. . .but his income wasn't up to what was required,so he wanted me to print out someone else's figures and just fix his name in the printout so it'll look like it's his account statement. He offered to pay me,as in, pay Money was tempting of course, and as if everything bad on the planet knew, I was still waiting for the sms on my phone that will say salary for the month has hit my account But really, the fear of God AND EFCC is the beginning of great wisdom. I refused, and then he begged and begged, that I would really be helping him out of a serious situ if I did it. . .I felt bad for him but I just couldn't. I know yours is kinda different, but my point is, if your heart isn't settled about it, flee from it. @oyb Lol @ the poop. Aww, so cute knowing you've got a baby son. Hope you and madam are able to cope with working and looking after him. Hope work's going okay. @topic I just HATE loan recoveries. . .why would people borrow money when they are not entirely certain they can pay back? And when the bank refuses to give they say the bank is harsh, the bank is not supportive etc etc. When they default it's the poor innocent relationship officer that takes the hit. Risks and more risks at every turn. . .I think I'll go try my hand at Investment Banking till I'm ready to finally say goodbye to the banking world Another customer came to deposit 5mil in his account today. To fill anti-money laundering form na wahala. CBN policy. . .all individual cash deposits above 1 mil should be specially taken note of. Nothing stressful about the form really, but the man just wanted to be difficult I guess. Other than that, today was good. Got on the team that took our cheques to the clearing house today. . .was fun. Hope it stays this way. . .fun I mean |
Re: Welcome To My Office by jericho: 8:17pm On Feb 05, 2009 |
na wa o. Where has everybody on this thread gone to. making money i believe. Anyway me i no go work today. Had some real personal issues to resolve. @cristalz I have told the baba dat nothing for the mattter o. Infact i told him that i have conflicting interest with the party on the other side as we are related in some untraceable way. No amount of money would make me take on such a case. Those guys are evil. What is happening for val? |
Re: Welcome To My Office by Cristalz(f): 8:40pm On Feb 05, 2009 |
@Jericho Good decision. Hope your baba didn't take the refusal personal. So you didn't go to work today? See enjoyment. . .advantage of going solo. You get to choose your hours About the peeps on this thread, don't mind us o,lol. Sometimes you don't see any activity here for one or two days probably due to busy hours and tiredness or lack of fresh gist. . .but everyone always comes back eventually. As for val, adverts for different val shows and balls and dinners are everywhere in Abj. Varying dress codes. . .one of them says: 'red and gold for ladies, black and red for guys'. Another says 'strictly red'. I'm sure that one will look like ogun festival So much hype. . .I'm going to throw a huge party for all my loved ones on the planet Dress code: red with yellow stripes. How about you? @topic Work was calm today, nothing out of the ordinary. Not really in the mood to talk shop sef |

Hi People whats gud? Cristalz I'm fasting o but you know flesh will always respond to stuffs like that hence the reason i stared at the gurl o yeah i agree with you the economy is depressing and of course the raising of cash will not be easy. We have returned to the era of smart money as against retail money. Money is now with the PE people, the institutional investors et al. Only projects with compelling value proposition will see the light! Yeah, thats why we have people like me to come in for clients with genuine intentions to raise cash; as for my client, we have asked the tough questions, we have given stringent terms and conditions, we have raised the bar and i'll tell you, they came out clean so we are good to go! My role is to make worthwhile ventures see the light of day no matter the odds! ill see u people laterz. off to ma clients site Tollu dont mind me o weekend is here and i tell u i aint going home. will be going home on Sunday cos i'll be working from a penthouse in VI. that one opposite EKO Hotel u know d place? i gat some strategy sessions with my client this weekend. takia my person |

Ok Friday morning and i couldnt have wished for any other day to work from home than today! The snow has grounded me and i cant even see my car in the parking lot!!! Even if i found the car, driving would have been treacherous and suicidal, so no go for me! Ringing round 2cancel my meetings, my santa-looking boss knows the drill also, he managed to get into work! How he did it, i dont know I need to do some designs, need to authorise payments to contractors, need to write up reports and also get my self ready for a seminar/workshop soon I have a fair bit to do actually and i hope i will be able to but i am disciplined so i trust myself I am currently working on a consultation with the Government to have Display Energy Certificates (DEC) for most of thier large sites And i am currently project managing a Voltage Optimizer Installation and Renewable Energy Trials It is real fun but loads to do!!! On the other job, football training for the week was cancelled as well as the game on tuesday night! We dont know whether tmorrows game will be on, so we will have to wait for a pitch inspection tonight or early tomorrow morning I hope it is off, so i can do chase other personal things!!Aaargh I hope everyone is well and looking forward to the weekend? Regards Brash!!!!! |

Nice joining this thread. I actually work in the same company with one of the active discussants here(both of us in Head Office, same floor, but different depts, his dept just centimetres away from mine, but I never knew he was also an active Nairalander until when I went to his dept a couple of weeks ago and he addressed me as JARUS. . .I was surprised he knew me as Jarus, and I knew he must be a Lander to know me by that name. He must have recognized me thru my profile picture). Hmmnnn, back to subject of the thread. New to this thread, but definitely not new to most of the peeps here as we have been meeting in other sections before. Well, I work as an Accountant in the downstream subsidiary of one of Nigeria's key players in the Oil and Gas sector. Will become fully inducted into the discussion later. |
Re: Welcome To My Office by jericho: 6:38pm On Feb 06, 2009 |
@Tollu, It was because of threats like this that i stayed home to sort out my crib. Meanwhile all the artisans working for me are MAD. One has blown the brand new LCD TV i just bought.DSTV chap is trying to play smart says that the camera on the dish is weak. At least the thing worked till saturday before we removed it. Generator has not started working. I feel my things are being purposely sabotaged. Na to crase for here. Planned not to go to work today, but got a call from a client i sent an invoice since last month in respect of registration with SEC and increase in share capital. Getting paid next week. Yipee. Right now sef i am outside the house cussing and swearing for the artisans. No DSTV, no generator (and sure no light dis nite cus the NEPA manager don go travel and forgot to drop the key to the server room ). Have a pal's wedding tomorow i got to attend, but i just cant leave these people alone here before i come back and they say the house too has collapsed. |

Reading everybody's gist in here is so entertaining and enlightening Don't mind me o,just had to let that out. . .unrestrained,lol. @Jarus You are very welcome to the chill zone. An accountant huh? A lot must go on in your head on a daily basis Looking forward to reading your office gist. @tollu Sweetie all those customers dey where dem dey o, the good, the bad and the ugly. Just the grace of God, IQ and street smarts that's helping me survive You must be as glad as I am that it's weekend again. @Jon Got it Hope work was hassle-free today. @TKB Try control your flesh o You must have a lot of criteria to determine if a project has got compelling value proposition. So in all this financial aiding, doesn't seem like your company is exposed to too much risk right? I mean, if the people you guys are helping raise money messes up in some way can you people just back out, wash your hands off them, or do y'all do it contract-wise,as in stick it out till the end? In other words, do y'all also take on ailing businesses, or it's strictly businesses with compelling value propositions? Curious. @Brash A lot on your plate I must say. I don't envy you, especially in that crazy weather you guys are experiencing over there. Project management huh? Impressive. Don't get electrocuted o. You guys that are always designing this and that, I hope we'll get to see these designs and models one day, lol. What's a Display Energy Certificate? @Jericho Come on, don't be paranoid Why would they deliberately sabotage your things, or aren't you a nice boss? Anywayz just take things easy and monitor them closely. @topic So so glad it's friday. In fact I'm not going to get outta my seat again till rainy season. . .the sun was so HOT today. In my suit,it felt like torture. Almost hard to believe people in the UK are on the same planet, lol. Just took things easy at work today. . .mostly spent the day out managing customers - helping out with their transactions, doing some crucial networking, 'babying' a few, resolving service glitches wherever there was a complaint. One of the things I love about this job is I learn new stuff everyday about people and finance within and outside the country. Nothing beats that for now, lol. Have a lovely and restful weekend everybody. Looking forward to my necessary dose of soccer |

I've enjoyed this thread---so far. Apparently, every poster is hardworking, self-motivated and able to take initiative. A quick question, any idea on how to transit from being the laid back person that I am to being hardworking on my job like y'all? I faff around on fb/NL for most hours of my working day! HELP! |
Re: Welcome To My Office by Cristalz(f): 9:40am On Feb 07, 2009 |
@ebariba Very funny Don't think the word ''faff'' is one I hear often, lol. First off, what kinda work are you into? |
Re: Welcome To My Office by ebariba: 11:40am On Feb 07, 2009 |
@Cristalz My background is Geology and I work as an engineering Geologist on a site (Full time Resident Engineer). My job description? Ensure the contractor comply with specification and working plan,, supervise "insitu" soil testing, take minutes at Earthwork review meetings, monitor ground settlement, gas/ground water monitoring, write daily and weekly reports, etc, My boss always has something to correct on my report and minutes draft and since I got on the job, He has only commended me once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There was a time I was asked to go supervise some drilling works, I went for the preliminary survey where I was given specific instructions by one of our technical Directors, he gave instructions on some technical stuff I had never heard before so I lost interest and just kept nodding my head, after the briefing, he asked if I had questions and I said no, When drilling works commenced, one of the lads (drilling crew) asked me a question I did'nt have an answer to and instead of exercising my brain for an answer or say I don't know, I rang my Technical Director, and my oh my, oyinbo never yab me like that before!!! "I thought we discussed all these things and I thought u said u understood!!!", and he kept going on and on, I learnt my lesson sha. |

Re: Welcome To My Office by MrCrackles(m): 8:02pm On Feb 07, 2009 |
Cristalz: Hey Criz, to your question~ You know the whole bruhaha about climate change and carbon emissions, the UK government has set itself a target to reduce its carbon emission by a considerable amount by 2050 and as part of the drive to achieve the target, there are various measures already in place with new ones likely to spring up over the next few years. Part of those measures is the Display Energy Certificate (DEC). You know when you buy a white gates i.e. fridge, washing machine etc., it has some labellings on them which indicates the rating of the goods based on energy consumption, performance and efficiency. The DEC shows the actual energy use of a building and it helps the public see the energy efficiency of the building, which is based on energy consumption as recorded by gas, electricity and water meters. A DEC is always accompanied by an Advisory Report that lists cost effective measures to improve the energy rating of the building. The DEC came into effect in October 2008, it is always valid for a year and it is only required for buildings over 1000sqm occupied by the public authority and institution providing public services. There are penalties for not displaying a DEC by sites which comes under the net. The UK government want to be seen as promoting energy efficiency and driving down carbon emission, hence the move, however there are plans to have it extended to private building sites and residential homes. For a building to have a DEC, it requires an assessment by an energy assessor who gathers relevant information about the building in order to produce a certificate specifically for the site. Criz, i can go on for ages, but i hope you get a basic idea with the above I also have some info on carbon trading and offsetting if you still want to know? |

Nice thread y'all. I'm a few months Old in the Banking industry (C & M). Though i know i'm better placed than my colleagues in OPs (faster promotions & i get around a lot so i spot a few side runs opportunities) however, my working Days in the past few weeks have turned to a case of LFTWS - (looking forward to weekend syndrome) Sure Cristalz is having a ball in Abj (Public sector money has always been sweet) Last week was a very shitty one for moi. Cos after the Chinese hols, All the traders were placing orders to China. Was real scared on Thursday when i physically moved $150k a distance of about 100 meters. I'm still wondering how i'll meet my seemingly unrealistic target 4 Feb esp as I did 15% in Jan mostly cos of d FX rate madness and extreme caution in the market. (tkb's comment bout erybody making 100% was right on the money. tho i'm guessing Mgt will just increase the bloody targets if that happens) I'm looking to hook up wif d ACCA, CFA, CISA holders/candidates in da house, see if i'll be inspired to swing that way, Or better i should hook up wif Jericho see what it takes to get off the Payroll & start paying the roll. Keep up the Hustle peeps. |

@ebariba Seems you don't enjoy your job. Why? Monotony, no challenges or what? If it's any of that, you need to get the drive from somewhere to climb higher. Perhaps get more degrees and move up to a more challenging job you'll enjoy. If it's not. . .simply close your NL and FB accounts @Brash Thanks for the lecture. . .very enlightening. When I'm ready for Carbon trading 101 I'll holla @diggler Hey, welcome aboard fellow cash custodian Me having a ball? Well. . .let's just say the Lord has been good. Lol Don't worry about LFTWS. . .there's no banker that doesn't look forward to that so it's nothing new.I feel bad for those that work on Saturdays. Tough. Money moving is another necessary evil. Just be careful o. . .if you're in Lagos be doubly careful. If you can meet half of your target you'll be fine. Mgt knows their targets are just unreasonable. Endeavor to please your customers, be diligent at work, meet at least half your target and most importantly, be creative and innovative. . .come up with strategies to improve things for your bank and they'll recognize and value you, trust me. A quick question, any idea on how to transit from being the laid back person that I am to being hardworking on my job like y'all? I faff around on fb/NL for most hours of my working day! HELP! Can you be more laid back than me? It's an issue I'm personally battling to get over. It's very serious for me. Imagine, I have been in office for the past 5 hours. I spent the first three hours on Nairaland and the last two facebooking. I have not done any work in office today, other than making a couple of phone calls. The auditor auditing my accounts was around about 1 hour ago and I only posted him to come back. Since he left, I opened facebook again and I've not done other official thing. Well, my own problem is I'm too free. My boss doesn't have time for me. My work hardly involves deadlines. So I'm usually on my own. Sometimes I feel guilt that do I really deserve this salary I'm collecting, given the number of office hours I spend on unofficial things? And ironically, I get the highest rating from my boss of all his subordinates. |

Today has been really annoying for me! Rushed all the way to the federal high court for a matter that should start at 9am. Imagine waking up around 4.30-5am to avoid the third mainland traffic and finally getting to court, you hear the judge is indisposed and the matter has been adjorned to next month! Kai! The kin sleep wey de my eye now sha! I cant even do anything normal again today except play of nairaland and facebook till i feel like going home. Its really depressing when you have your whole day planned out and you murder sleep only for you to come back to the office feeling sleepy! If i atempt to draft any contract or fill any CAC form now, walahai, the law suit that will follow me would not be compared to george bushes missiles! |
