ah well you have a point. they are old horses indeed. so what then do we do. the f7 is essentially a MIG 21. we need something more capable and can carry guided munitions. the Textron Scorpion has been touted as a cheap air to ground attack aircraft with some 4g capabilities and importantly can carry guided munitions. however its an unproven platform in battle and our pilots have never flown anything similar. since we are used to russian jets maybe we should head down there. but we have always been reluctant to equip the air force. we need more capable aircraft and we need them yesterday. even if we have to buy second hand. Egypt just ordered 24 su-35s for $2bill we dont need to spend that much or get something that new for starters but we need to spend. rumour has it that some su-25s are to be delivered in 2016. I pray.

Yeap rumour has it and let's pray 2016 we receive the su-25 frogfoot jet for close in support .
Yet we still need multirole fighter jets, either light or heavy like the JF7 or SU30 or 35 for air superiority.

Nothing impressive about Nigerian defense procurement. One would expect that we will be gunning for maybe two squadrons of Yak130, 6 units of SU35 and 6 units of SU25 with two inflight refuelling tanker aircraft. At least we have been waiting for this.

Missing soldiers reunite with fighting units; Nigerian Army insist it’s a minor setback

The headquarters of the Nigerian Army on Friday said that the military operations in the northeast are on course.

On Thursday, we reported that about 105 Nigerian soldiers engaged in counter-terrorism operations in the northeast were feared missing.

The soldiers of the 157 Battalion of the Nigerian Army including their Commanding Officer, were feared missing after coming under fierce attack from terrorist group Boko Haram at Gudunbali, Borno State, on Wednesday.

The Nigerian military authorities delayed commenting on the issue due to its sensitive nature.

A statement shared on the official page of the Nigerian Army on social media site, Twitter, has however subtly acknowledged the reports even though it said the situation was exaggerated.

The army described what happened as a “slight setback” and a situation that was being stabilized.

All troops have rejoined their units and preparing for more action, the statement signed by Col SK Usman, army spokesman, said.

Troops operating in the northern Borno State towns of Gudumbali and Kareto had slight setback within the week. 1/

However, situation being stabilised. The troops have rejoined their units for further action. The ealier media reports were exaggerated. 2/

The CO is right now with his soldiers. It's just a minor setback and such are common in military operations. May God help us all. @skusman

— Nigerian Army (@HQNigerianArmy) November 20, 2015

The Commanding Officer (CO) who was feared to have been captured on Wednesday has also rejoined his soldiers.

Usman insisted the situation was a minor setback, one common in military operations, while also praying for God’s help for everyone.

US Special Forces Rescue Hostages During Hotel Siege in Mali today.

U.S. troops have evacuated a half-dozen American citizens from a hotel attacked by gunmen Friday morning in the capital city of Mali in West Africa.

The six rescued Americans were among 170 people taken hostage by the attackers, who reportedly drove up to the hotel in a car with diplomatic plates. At least two gunmen began firing on guards and lobbing grenades while shouting “Allahu Akbar” before advancing through the hotel and into rooms. Malian state TV reported some 80 hostages were able to escape the siege, which nearby security forces reportedly responded to quickly. Afterward, Mali’s security minister told reporters the gunmen are no longer holding any hostages.

Some U.S. forces were already in the region assisting French troops who have been fighting an insurgency in Mali for years. The American troops help the French with airlift, refueling as well as intelligence and reconnaissance, U.S. Africa Command spokesman Army Col. Mark Cheadle said Friday in Washington.

The al Qaeda-affiliated African jihadist group, al Mourabitoun, claimed responsibility for the attacks in a message posted to Twitter on Friday, according to Reuters.

The U.S. military has 26 troops in Mali, with ten of those dedicated to training, Cheadle said. The French government said it is sending 10 specially-trained paratroopers to the scene to assist Malian special forces.

“We are aware U.S. citizens might be present at the hotel,” the U.S. State Department said in a statement. “Private U.S. citizens are encouraged to contact their family. U.S. citizens should adhere to the instructions of local authorities and monitor local media.”

The State Department issued a travel warning on Mali in May, “especially warn[ing] against travel to the northern parts of the country and along the border with Mauritania because of ongoing military operations and threats of attacks and kidnappings targeting westerners,” it read. “Mali faces significant security challenges because of the presence in northern Mali of extremists and militant factions. The potential for attacks throughout the country, including in Bamako, remains.”

Al Mourabitoun is said to be based in Algeria, but has maintained a presence in northern Mali as well. The group had been led by the Algerian extremist Mokhtar Belmokhtar—aka “Belaouer the One-Eyed”—who is also believed to be the planner behind the 2013 attack on an Algerian natural gas plant that left 40 people dead. The Pentagon said it had killed Belmokhtar in June—which would have been the eighth time reports of his death have surfaced—but al Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb denied the Pentagon’s claim.

Some of the hotel gunmen reportedly spoke English to one another as they reloaded their Kalashnikovs during Friday’s siege.

wink smiley.... what about the cost effect and maintenance........?
Countries like Canada and British are even considering bailing out of f-22 raptor programme. Lets be realistic hear, we are not fighting a war. let's start from a 3rd.gen/ multi-role fighter jet, close in support like the su-25 and attack HELO's. By doing these we would reduce the way our armed forces his being humiliated.
We can't continue to blame the NAF when our alpha and f7 jets are preys to BHT. And also our hind HELO's are too heavy for attack maneuver......these is limiting the Airforce no precision weapon system, talk less of night % day capabilities or even all weather?

Correction: you're refering to the F-35 prgram, not F-22 Lightning. The later is operated ONLY by the USAF & production has been terminated.

Why,i totally disagree with you ...... his sambisa forest that big, that an AWACS needs inflight refueling. come to think of it, NAF ATR 42-500 MPA is design more for maritime surveillance . There is nothing wrong operating such aircraft, Egypt is not fighting a war and they operate quite a few numbers , and am not sure if they have tankers?
The beauty of AWACS is they av longer eye both air and ground and can relay enemy positions/targets to multiple inbound jets to strike.
So tell me why the combination is not for BH, if egypt can acquire up to 8 or 9 E-2 Hawkeye and they are not battling insurgency like we do.

The Egyptian Air Force is purportedly going to receive MIG-29smt's or MIG-35s. Not SU-35s.

Egypt has the world's largest F-16 fleet, larger than Israel and Turkey, second only to the U.S Air Force.

They also fly 52 Apache Helicopters.

However, here is the thing, Egypt receives $1.3 billion in direct military aid from the U.S each year.

Police arrest another wanted Boko Haram commander in Maiduguri

ANOTHER of the 100 Boko Haram commanders declared wanted recently by the Nigeria Army has been arrested by police detectives in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The arrested commander, Muhammed Usman, was arrested on Sunday at Abujan Talakawa area of Maiduguri, during “intensive cordon and search operations” by the police.
The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of Zone 12 of the Nigeria Police, comprising Bauchi, Borno and Yobe states, Mr Tunde Johnson Ogunsakin, disclosed this in a press release he issued and made available to journalists in Bauchi, on Thursday.
According to the release, Usman was fugitive number 40 on the wanted list released by the Nigerian Army, adding that he had since been handed over to the Army.
“The suspect was arrested on November 15, 2015 and handed over to the headquarters of 7 Division of the Nigerian Army for further investigation, while efforts are being intensified to track down and apprehend other suspects still at large,” the statement read in part.
In another development, the Bauchi State police command has called on the people of the state to be extra vigilant, as it had uncovered plan to carry out coordinated attacks by some men and women numbering about six in some parts of the state.
This was contained a press statement alerting people of the state to the plan issued and made available to journalists in Bauchi on Thursday by the command’s image maker, Haruna Mohammed.

i wish the men in charge of the purse are thinking like you. But no they all interested in buying their own private jets. Very painful thing. I wonder how Egypt is able organize their multi billion dollar procurement system without getting too many issues of corruption.

is 1.3 billion dollar anything compared to the amount of money our polithieves are stealing everyday from corrupt defense deals. Egypt will use $2billion to purchase a new and advanced platforms with tech transfer inclusive a while Nigeria will use the same amount to beg people to buy second hand and few platforms. even when we are rich we still act like beggars.

Suspected drone strike kills al Shabaab fighters in Somalia – police

MOGADISHU (Reuters) – A suspected drone targeted a base belonging to al Qaeda-affiliated al Shabaab insurgents in southern Somalia, killing at least five fighters, police and residents said on Sunday.

Al Shabaab was not immediately reachable for comment. It was not known who was behind the aerial strike but the United States has in the past targeted al Shabaab fighters.

Al Shabaab have staged many bomb and gun attacks in the capital Mogadishu in its bid to topple Somalia’s Western-backed government and have also hit targets in neighbouring Kenya since Nairobi joined African Union peacekeeping forces in Somalia.

Police and residents said that what appeared to be a drone attack took place at Balad Amin, about 30 km to the east of Wanlaweyn in the lower Shabelle region on Saturday night.

“We heard three big crashes at an al Shabaab base in Balad Amin last night. It looked like a drone but we have no news of casualties,” Adan Ahmed, a resident of the area, told Reuters.

“The drone targeted an al Shabaab base last night. So far we have the information that five fighters including the al Shabaab leader in charge of Lower Shabelle region died in the strike,” Major Abdiqadir Ahmed, a police officer based in Wanlaweyn, told Reuters.

In March, the U.S. Defense Department said a drone strike in southern Somalia killed Adnan Garaar, an al Shabaab leader believed to be the architect of a 2013 attack on a Nairobi shopping mall that killed 67 people.

Al Shabaab wants to impose its own radical brand of Islam on the Horn of Africa country.

The Jihadists were pushed out of Mogadishu by AU forces in 2011 but have continued attacks, often going after politicians and officials in Somalia, as well as AU and Somali forces.

Another of al Shabaab’s attacks in Kenya was an assault on Garissa University College in April that killed 148 people.
