Nigeria's Boko Haram releases new video denying surrender

Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Boko Haram released a new video Friday denying any suggestion it might surrender, just over a week after shadowy leader Abubakar Shekau appeared in a rare message looking dejected and frail.

Shekau, unseen on camera for more than a year, released an unverified video late last month saying his time in charge of the Nigerian jihadist group may be coming to an end.

If the video indeed depicts Shekau, he appears thin and listless, delivering his message without his trademark fiery rhetoric.

It prompted speculation from the army that the Islamist group was on the verge of collapse in the face of a sustained military counter-insurgency.

However, in Friday's message, Boko Haram maintained it was a potent fighting force, with men holding AK-47s posing in front of Toyota Hilux pick-up trucks and a lorry mounted with a military cannon.

should know that there is no truce, there is no negotiations, there is no surrender," an unidentified masked man in camouflage said in a prepared script in Hausa, the dominant language in the north, in the video posted on YouTube.

"This war between us will not stop."

The video, of markedly better quality than Shekau's and including Arabic subtitles, featured nine masked Boko Haram fighters standing on sandy ground in an undisclosed desert location.

Shekau was still the head of the "West African wing", said the masked speaker, likening Boko Haram to the Islamist insurgencies in Iraq, Libya and Syria.

In March 2015, Boko Haram pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, another deadly terror organisation.

But there were few signs that Boko Haram -- now styled as Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) -- has drawn benefits from the partnership.

Since then Nigeria's army has won back swathes of territory from the militants, liberating thousands of people who had been living under Boko Haram control.

The video appears to confirm collaboration between Boko Haram and the Islamic State group, Africa security specialist Ryan Cummings told AFP.

"The production quality bears the hallmarks of the Islamic State's media wing," Cummings said, explaining that it is expected that Shekau shun the limelight.

"A hallmark of the group and its affiliates is that you very seldom see leaders," Cummings said.

The analyst said it still remains to be seen what support, if any, the Islamic State group is offering to Boko Haram militants on the ground.

"What we do know is that there has been a pledge of allegiance and we are seeing Boko Haram communiques being spread around cyberspace by Islamic State accounts," Cummings said.

"Whether that has been translated into any operational links in the field, I don't think there's enough verifiable evidence to suggest that."

An estimated 20,000 people have been killed since Boko Haram began its campaign of violence in 2009 to carve out a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria.

More than 2.6 million people have fled their homes since, but some of the internally displaced have begun returning.

TROOPS CLEAR BOKO HARAM HIDEOUTS IN WULWUTA

The troops of 155 Task Force Battalion, 21 Brigade, Nigerian Army on Thursday 31st March 2016, during clearance operations discovered and destroyed Improvised Explosive Device (IED) factory and cleared Boko Haram terrorists hide out in Wulwuta village, ahead of Jere, Bama Local Government Area.

During the operation, the troops also killed 9 Boko Haram terrorists while one of our soldier was wounded in action.

The troops recovered 1 laptop, 1 solar panel, a pair of Nigerian military desert and woodland camouflage uniform each, as well as bandolier vest and 6 ready IEDs pressure plates. Other recoveries include a loaded pistol with registration number D557954, 3 rounds of 7.65mm, 13 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunitions and combat boots, amongst others.

The gallant unit also rescued 21 persons held captives by the terrorists, comprising 8 men, 4 women and 9 children. They have been moved to the Brigade Headquarters for further care, screening and eventual hand over to the appropriate agencies.

It is significant to state that the ever vigilant and professional troops noticed that the terrorists were determined to cause maximum casualty on them by stuffing 2 empty artillery shells and other cartridges with IED and batteries ready to explode. They were however safely detonated by the Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) team attached to the unit.
It is heart warming to state that the troops morale remains high and fighting efficiency is equally unprecedented.

AU, Somali forces kill top Al-Shabaab commander, 22 others in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The Africa Union peacekeeping mission (AMISOM) and Somalia National Army (SNA) forces on Friday night killed a senior commander of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab in a joint security operation in Janaale, south of the capital Mogadishu.

AMISOM's Sector One Commander Brigadier General Sam Okiding confirmed on Saturday that Al-Shabaab commander for the region of Janaale Abdirashir Buqdube, together with 22 others, was killed following air strikes and ground operations against the insurgents' hideout along the Buufow road.

"Al-Shabaab cannot hide and we shall continue to work hard to deny them safe haven until the people have been liberated from Al-Shabaab terror," Okiding said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

He said a further dozen terrorists had been killed over the last two days as they attempted to ambush and disrupt AMISOM and SNA troops that were undertaking developmental activities such as borehole repairs and clearing up of roads for free movement around the area.

"AMISOM and SNA forces shall continue clearing these roads as we have so far completed two major roads: one from Beldamin to Qoryooley and another from Beldamin to Shalamboti," Okiding said.

"We are now clearing the one from Buufow to Janaale where Al-Shabaab have been trying to put up resistance," he added.

The AU commander said the allied forces will continue to clean up Al-Shabaab held areas in Janaale to liberate residents of Al-Shabaab tyranny.

The latest incident came after reports that another senior Al-Shabaab commander who was part of Al-Shabaab's security and intelligence wing, Hassan Ali Dhoore was killed in southern Somalia on Friday.

The U.S. Pentagon also confirmed that it conducted an airstrike against Dhoore, a senior leader of the Al-Qaida-affiliated extremist group in the Horn of Africa nation. However, Pentagon said it was yet to confirm his death.

According to Pentagon, Dhoore had planned and overseen attacks resulting in the death of at least three U.S. citizens, and he was also believed to have been plotting attacks targeting U.S. citizens in Mogadishu.

Dhoore was also directly responsible for the March 27, 2015 attack on the Maka al-Mukarram Hotel in Mogadishu, resulting in the deaths of 15 people, including one Somali-American national.

Shekau’s Deputy Arrested in Kogi

Military sources on Saturday confirmed the arrest of the leader of the Ansaru Islamic Sect, Khalid Albarnawi, who was described as the second in command to Abubakar Shekau in the hierarchy of the Boko Haram terrorists group.

A report by an online portal, The Cable, had quoted Ahmad Salkida, a journalist, known for his access to some of the leaders of the Boko Haram as having said that Albarnawi was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lokoja, Kogi State and moved to Abuja on Friday.

The Ansaru leader, Albarnawi, who reportedly trained in the North African country of Algeria, is believed to highly be influential in the nation’s terror network.

He is regarded as the most influential member of Nigeria’s terror network with contacts to other Jihadi groups in North Africa and the Middle East. Salkida said Albarnawi is believed to have reconciled with the leader of Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP), also known as Boko Haram.

Ansaru was formed as a splinter group of the Boko Haram in January 26, 2012 and it claimed responsibility for the November 2012 attack on the Special Anti Robbery Squad Headquarters, Abuja.

Commander attributes troop’s successes to improved welfare

Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, has attributed his troop’s recent successes in the anti-Boko Haram war in the North-East to improved welfare by the Nigerian Army Headquarters.
Irabor disclosed this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Sunday.
``When you see a troop that is fighting and making the kind of progress we have made from January to date, it means that the troop is motivated.
``If the troop is not motivated it will not give you that type of result,’’ he said.
Irabor was reacting to speculations about delayed payment of allowances to some soldiers working in the theatre.
``In January when my predecessor Maj.-Gen. Hassan Umaru, took over the command, his maiden briefing was on the delay in payment of allowances to soldiers.
``Some soldiers were owed allowances and the reason for that was the introduction of the Treasury Single Account by the Federal Government,’’ he said.
Irabor said that ``those issues were comprehensively addressed and all our troops were paid their allowances.
``Let me say that the problem was caused by some factors and not because the money was not available.’’
He pointed out that the introduction of the Bank Verification Number (BVN) also contributed to the delay in payment of soldiers allowances.
``For reasons of the nature of environment and where our troops were deployed how they have been engaged in operation, it is not easy to have them provide the necessary bank details in the correct format on time.
``The introduction of BVN was also a factor, it was not possible to have all our troops to come out to places that they could register and so we were not able to send money directly to their account,’’ he said.
Irabor expressed joy that the troops had been motivated after receiving all their entitlements.
According to him, all the troops are happy now after getting all their allowances.
``I can assure you that the motivation has translated in the victory in the operation we are carrying out here.’’
Irabor said that the leadership at the theatre will continue to strive toward improving the welfare of soldiers with a view to sustaining the current achievements.
``Every effort is being made to increase welfare issue that will boost the morale in terms of logistics, allowances and kitting.
``We are making tremendous efforts from the support we are getting from President Muhammadu Buhari and the Service Chiefs.
