Nigeria To Buy Attack Helicopters From South Africa, Others – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, yesterday disclosed that the Nigerian army might soon procure the South Africa (SA) made Rooivalk attack helicopters or any other deemed okay for the full take off of the newly introduced Army Aviation Corps.

General Buratai said this yesterday at the opening of the COAS First Quarter Conference 2016 that held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers Mess, Abuja.

The army chief, while reviewing the progress made under his command, especially since the last COAS Quarterly Conference, said the introduction of the NAAC was amongst the numerous innovations recently introduced  to make the army a more professionally responsive body.

On the procurement of befitting helicopters to enable the full takeoff of the NAAC project, the COAS said the army had compiled a list of platforms from Russia, America and Chinese origins which include their stimulator and UAVs. He however noted that emphasis was made on Russian-made Mi-17 due to its “ruggedness, operability and multi-role capability.”

“Different contractors submitted their proposals for supply which are still being considered. Recently the NA also considered the South Africa (SA) made Rooivalk attack helicopters after witnessing a demonstration in SA on the capability and employability”.

According to him the take off of the NAA is one project that is very dear to him.

“One project that is dear to me is the takeoff of the Nigeria Army Aviation”, Buratai said.

He explained that though the activities towards the building of the NAAC is still in progress, which he hoped would soon enable the army to acquire its own platform, the army chief added that so far all the needed manpower requirement for the take off of the NAAC, like the training of the pilots needed to man the aviation sector is ongoing.

According to him 10 officers (one captain and nine lieutenants) are still undergoing flying training course at the International Helicopter Flying School  Enugu and are expected to round off their training by May 16,  this year. He added that 20 NA Aviation technicians who had recently completed their six months refresher course on aircraft maintenance at AFIT are currently attached to the 75 STG Yola for further on the job training.

He added that another helicopter operating company called Caverton proposed the supply of three H125 Helicopters and maintenance which the NA is also considering presently as an option.

General Buratai said, “The NA Aviation might eventually take off with any platform it can acquire as long as the pilot can perform the expected roles.”

On the ongoing counterinsurgency operation going on in the Northeast, the army chief said giving the robust  operational strategy he introduced he takes the pride that “today the callous terror group that brought wanton destruction and untold hardship to our lands has been significantly decimated  with all of you (officers and men) playing pivotal roles”.

“Troops have continued to fight the insurgency with reinvigorated spirit and in a very professional manner”.

First time I'm hearing about contractors being able to submit proposals for evaluation.
Hopefully, no more under table dealings with procurement.

MY "6" AFFORDABLE ATTACK HELICOPTER PLATFORM FOR THE NA AIR WING

The COAS yesterday disclosed that the NA air wing will soon procure attack helicopters to equip it's operations but emphasis was made on the SA roovialk attack helicopter that comes with a price tag of $40 million per unit. shocked .

In his statement other countries from different companies are also potential bidders, for these reasons i have compiled a list of affordable yet deadly platforms. Hope you enjoy my list.... angry

NO 1 : AH - super cobra ($10.7 million)

The Bell AH-1 Super Cobra is a twin-engine attack helicopter based on the United States Army's AH-1 Cobra. The twin Cobra family includes the AH-1J Sea Cobra, the AH-1T Improved Sea Cobra, and the AH-1W Super Cobra. The AH-1W is the backbone of the United States Marine Corps's attack helicopter fleet, but it will be replaced in service by the Bell AH-1Z Viper upgrade. It has proven its worth in battlefield and mountainous terrains and used effectively by Pakistani military on most difficult terrains.
Unit Cost: AH-1W US$ 10.7 million
Top speed: 282 km/h (175 mph)
Range: 587 km (365 miles)
Service ceiling: 3,720 m (12,200 ft )
Rate of climb: 8.2 m/s  (1,620 ft/min)

NO 2; TEXTRON BELL OH -58 KIOWA ($13million)

The Armed OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, in service with the US Army, is supplied by Bell Helicopter Textron of Fort Worth, Texas. Around 375 Kiowas are in service and the single engine, double-bladed armed reconnaissance helicopter has been deployed in support of United States armed forces around the world including Haiti, Somalia and the Gulf of Arabia (Desert Storm and Desert Shield).

In 2002, Kiowas were deployed as part of Nato's SFOR forces in Bosnia and, in 2003, 120 Kiowas were deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 29 helicopters were lost during that operation. The US Army Kiowa fleet achieved a total of 750,000 combat hours until the end of 2011.

The OH-58D is equipped with two universal quick-change weapons pylons. Each pylon can be armed with two Hellfire missiles, seven Hydra 70 rockets, two air-to-air Stinger missiles or one .50-calibre fixed forward machine gun.

Lockheed Martin successfully test fired its DAGR guided rockets from OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter in March 2010.Mission processors control the suite of mission subsystems via a military standard 1553B bus. An onboard computer provides laser ranging and target location within 10m.

Countermeasures

The countermeasures suite includes an AN/ALQ-144 infrared jammer, radar warning receivers against pulsed and continuous wave radars and a laser warning detector.

Fire control and observation

The distinctive mast-mounted sight (MMS) from Boeing, situated above the rotor blades, enables the Kiowa Warrior to operate by day and night and to engage the enemy at the maximum range of the weapon systems and with the minimum exposure of the helicopter.

The MMS contains a suite of sensors which includes: a high-resolution television camera for long-range target detection; a thermal imaging sensor for navigation, target acquisition and designation; a laser rangefinder / designator for target location and guidance of the Hellfire missiles and designation for Copperhead artillery rounds; and a boresight assembly which provides in-flight sensor alignment. The laser rangefinder / designator is also employed for handoff to an AH-1 Cobra helicopter for TOW missile engagements.

The MMS is principally used for collecting imagery and target acquisition data of the battlefield during the day or night, under extreme adverse conditions.

@bidexiii I think the prices you quoted are wrong.

Read this about.

Algeria recently revealed that the 40 Russian Mi-28NE helicopter gunships ordered in early 2014 will all be built with dual controls. This is apparently so that both crew members can be pilots and fly the aircraft. This would come in handy if the designated pilot is wounded. One crew position will still have the weapons controls. Dual control aircraft are also used for training.

Algeria paid more than $50 million for each gunship, more than the usual price. That is apparently to make allowance for the bribes and payoffs Algeria is so infamous for and the Russians are so understanding about. What probably clinched this sale was the fact that in 2013 Russia began replacing its 250 Mi-24 helicopter gunships with 300 Mi-28s. Russia plans to replace all its 1960s era Mi-24s with the more modern Mi-28s by 2015.

The Mi-28N is a much more complex aircraft than the Mi-24 and requires more skillful and better trained pilots. To deal with this problem the Russian Air Force developed a dual control model early on and the Russian air force ordered 60 of these Mi-28UB helicopter trainers. The UB model has dual controls that enable an instructor to also control the helicopter from the weapons systems operator’s seat. Each squadron will receive 4-6 of the UB model to help build and maintain pilot skills. The Mi-28UB solves the problem of quickly getting new pilots up to speed on how to handle this much more capable gunship. There was no mention of Mi-28UBs in the original Algerian deal but the Algerian pilots will apparently go to Russia for training where they will have access to all the equipment and facilities Russian pilot trainees use. Algeria is a long time user of the Mi-24 and has about 30 in service. Apparently Mi-24 pilots will be trained to handle the Mi-28N, just as many Russian Mi-24 pilots are doing.

The older Mi-24 helicopter gunship has been in service for nearly half a century. It is a twelve ton chopper based on the Mi-8/17 transport. The U.S. did the same thing with the AH-1, developing it from the UH-1 "Huey" in the 1960s. But rather than adopt the radical redesign seen in the AH-1 and AH-64 Apache, the Mi-24 could still carry troops or cargo in the back and was not as nimble as the AH-1. The 11 ton Mi-28 looks more like the AH-64. That's because, by the end of the 1960s, the Russians realized that the AH-1 design was superior. For several years there was intense competition, to decide which of its two new helicopter gunship designs (the Ka-50 and Mi-28N) to make standard. The Mi-28N is a more capable helicopter, costing about the same as the earlier American AH-64A ($15 million each).

The Mi-28NE "Night Hunter" is an all-weather, night attack version of the 1980s era Mi-28A, with added FLIR (night vision sensor), night fighting optics, and a two man crew. The basic Mi-28 is an 11.6 ton helicopter that can carry 1.6 tons of rockets and missiles. The aircraft also has a 30mm cannon. The cockpit for the two man crew is armored and the helicopter has missile countermeasures (chaff and flares), GPS, head up display, laser designator, and other gadgets. The Mi-28N has a top speed of 300 kilometers an hour and a one way range of 1,100 kilometers. It can carry up to 16 anti-tank missiles (with a range of up to eight kilometers). The helicopter can also carry 80mm rockets, bombs, or fuel for additional range. The Mi-28 has been around in small quantities since the 1990s and the Mi-28N is the most advanced model, on par with the American AH-64D gunship (which is a little lighter). The first version of the Mi-28N was shown in 1996, although the manufacturer, Mil, wasn't ready to offer it for sale until 2004. The fact that the basic Mi-28 has been around for decades and was known to be reliable and effective made it an easy, and safe, choice for the Mi-24 replacement.

Soldiers kill 2 suicide bombers, arrests three (graphic photos)

– Soldiers acted on a tip off and killed two suicide bombers in Maiduguri – The soldiers also arrested three suspected Boko Haram members at Nwagafete village  Gallant soldiers of the Nigerian army on April 7 intercepted some suspected Boko Haram terrorists suicide bombers coming from Sambisa forest through Cashew Plantation. Troops of 101 Battalion of 7 Division received a tip off about impending attack in Maiduguri city and swiftly swung into action to avert the attack at about 4.00am . “The ever vigilant troops responded decisively by intercepting and neutralizing of the suspected terrorists at Madiyari village, while the third suicide bomber was intercepted and neutralized at Jimini-Bolori village. “Unfortunately 3 of our soldiers sustained injuries in the process and they have been evacuated to the unit’s Regimental Aid Post (RAP), for treatment,” he said. It was gathered that the two unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on the suicide bombers were safely detonated by a combined team of Nigeria Police and armyeExplosive ordinance device (EOD) experts. In a related development, the troops also arrested three suspected Boko Haram terrorists at Nwagafete village comprising two women and a 16-year-old boy who were connected to suspected terrorists’ food vendors earlier arrested.

Meanwhile, following the continued onslaught against the terrorists group, air marshal Sadique Abubakar, the chief of air staff recently revealed that the battle against the Boko Haram insurgency is already being won as intelligence reports shows that the sect is now divided. Abubakar who gave the hint on April 8, in Abuja at a media parley to unveil activities for the 52nd anniversary of the NAF, added that members of the sect are already surrendering in large numbers. He noted that there are still pockets of insurgent attacks on soft targets, but advised local communities to offer credible intelligence to security operatives, adding that available intelligence showed that many of the terrorists are exhausted and want to stop fighting.

Nigerian Army unveils locally made bomb detonator, 5 times cheaper than imported ones

The Nigerian Army on Thursday unveiled Nigeria’s first locally made explosive detonator, known as Rechargeable Blasting Device.

The device is a potable electrical system adaptable to wet and dry conditions.

The unveiling and testing of the device was part of the programme of the 2016 Chief of Army Staff First Quarter Conference, held in Abuja.

Maj.-Gen. Gabriel Ode, the Deputy Commandant of the National Defence College and brain behind the innovation said the device was a product of research by the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers.

In his explanation shortly before the testing of the device, Ode said the device could be used for demolition of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and unexploded bombs.

He said that research on the production of the equipment lasted for four months, explaining that all materials used were sourced locally.

The deputy commandant said the equipment would be useful in the ongoing clearance operations in the North-East, especially in the removal of planted IEDs and unexploded bombs in liberated areas.

“The production of this device is based solely on researches conducted by Nigerian Army engineers and from scratch to finish, the materials were sourced locally.

“The average cost of producing one unit of the device is N140, 000 as against N700, 000 required to import same from abroad. The importance of the device cannot be over-emphasised because before now, what was used in demolition of explosives was no longer useful. We can use this one in our operations in the North-East and the use of key switches makes it quite unique,’’ he said.

Ode said there were other innovative works that Army engineers were working on which he added would improve the efficiency of the army’s operations within and outside the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, and other participants at the conference witnessed the testing of the device.

The AK-47 and it's various variants is the primary rifle of the Nigerian soldier. It's not been up to 20 years we began using the AK.

Nigerian SF soldiers carry a secondary 9mm.

When I got the price tags from some defence blog, I thought as much that they are too good to be that cheap. Anyway those Russian helo's are far better than the price tag on SA roovialk.
And thanks for the insight

DSS STATEMENT ON THE ARREST OF TERRORISTS KINGPIN AND IPOB

This Service wish to inform the general public that further to its efforts to stem the tide of terrorism in the Country, it has recorded another major breakthrough in the arrest of one Mohammed USMAN, widely known as Khalid AL-BARNAWI, alias KAFURI/ NAZIRU/ ALHAJI YAHAYA/MALLAM DAUDA/ALHAJI TANIMU.

2. Khalid AL-BARNAWI was apprehended by this Service on 1st April, 2016, in Lokoja, Kogi State, while hiding under a false cover. AL-BARNAWI was a founding member of the Jama'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid Da'wah Wa'l-Jihad (Boko Haram) and later the Amir of the break-away faction, Jama'at Ansarul Muslimim Fi Biladi Sudan (JAMBS).

3. Khalid AL-BARNAWI is a trained terrorist commander, who has been coordinating terrorist activities in Nigeria, while talent-spotting and recruiting vulnerable young and able Nigerians for terrorist training by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in North African States and the Middle-East.

4. Subject was involved in many terrorist attacks in States of the Federation, including Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Sokoto and FCT-Abuja. This resulted in the killing and maiming of innocent citizens of this Country. ALBARNAWI is also responsible for the bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja, on 26th August, 2011; the kidnapping of two European civil engineers in Kebbi State in May, 2011, and their subsequent murder in Sokoto State; the kidnap of a German engineer, Edgar RAUPACH in January, 2012, the kidnap and murder of seven expatriate staff of Setraco Construction Company at Jama'are, in Bauchi State in February, 2013, the attack of Nigerian troops at Okene in Kogi State, while on transit to Abuja for an official assignment.

5. Meanwhile, subject would soon be charged to Court to face his charges after investigation is completed.

6. This arrest is a major milestone in the counter-terrorism fight of this Service. This arrest has strengthened the Service’s resolve that no matter how long and far perpetrators of crime and their sponsors may run, this Service in collaboration with other sister security agencies, will bring them to justice.

7. In another development, the Service has uncovered the heinous role played by members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), in the abduction/kidnap of five Hausa-Fulani residents, namely Mohammed GAINAKO, Ibrahim MOHAMMED, Idris YAKUBU, and Isa Mohammed RAGO at Isuikwuato LGA in Abia State.

8. The abducted men were later discovered at the Umuanyi forest, Abia State, where they were suspected to have been killed by their abductors and buried in shallow graves, amidst fifty (50) other shallow graves of unidentified persons. Arrest and investigation conducted so far, revealed that elements within the IPOB, carried out this dastardly action.

9. It is pertinent therefore to alert the general public that IPOB, is gradually showing its true divisive colour and objectives, while steadily embarking on gruesome actions in a bid to ignite ethnic terrorism and mistrust amongst non-indigenes in the South-East region and other parts of the country. Following this act, tension is currently rife among communal stakeholders in the State with possibilities of spillover to other parts of country.

10. Against the foregoing, the Service will not hesitate to act decisively within its statutory mandate to ensure that the sponsors and perpetrators of this action are apprehended and prosecuted for their crime. Accordingly, law-abiding citizens are enjoined to go about their civil duties and businesses freely, as efforts are being intensified by security agencies to maintain law and order in the State and across the Federation.

THANK YOU,
Tony OPUIYO

You may recall that our gallant troops on Tuesday 29th March 2016 cleared Boko Haram terrorists from their supposed 'Spritiual Headquarters' at Alagarno Forest in Borno State. Here are some photographs of the clearance operations.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.
