Keshi: I Wish Oliseh The Best

By David Meshioye:
Former Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, says he bears no grudge towards his successor as the Nigeria Football Federation conclude plans to unveil Sunday Oliseh as Eagles coach.
In an exclusive chat with completesportsnigeria.com from his base in the United States on Monday, the Big Boss stated that he has since moved on with his life and further wishes Oliseh success as he prepares start work with the Super Eagles.
“I have no hard feelings toward whoever is picked. I really don’t want to talk about anything concerning Nigerian football right now,” Keshi told completesportsnigeria.com.
“I’m cooling off and I have since moved on from that, I wish you guys all the best. I need to be left alone to rest now that Sunny is coming as Super Eagles coach. All questions should be directed to him.”
The former Mali national team coach refused to comment on Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for AFCON 2017 billed for Gabon, having picked three points against Les Sao of Chad last month in Kaduna.
“I’m not prepared to say anything about the team,” he insists.
Samson Siasia, Stephen Keshi and Sunday Oliseh are the three musketeers in the recent pecking order of ex-internationals listed to tinker Super Eagles, with Oliseh now picking up the reins.

Oliseh Must Learn From Keshi’s Mistakes

BY JUDE OPARA
Soccer analysts and stakeholders across the country and beyond have been reacting to the recent appointment of former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh as the new Chief Coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The NFF who last week announced the sacking of the former Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi over allegations of a breach of his contractual agreements did not waste time in naming Oliseh as his replacement with a five-year contract. This, the NFF said, will afford him the opportunity to reposition the nation’s football. Oliseh was also given approval to come with a foreign technical assistant who will be working with him alongside other local coaches already in the camp of the national team.
But despite the fact that every Nigerian who has commented on the issue knows the pedigree of the former Juventus of Italy offensive midfielder, there are still a lot of people who believe that Oliseh is not the right man for the job.

Keshi and Oliseh

For instance former board member of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Dr. Sam Sam Jaja is of the view that what Nigeria needs at the moment is a tested foreign technical adviser. According to him, Nigerian coaches, despite the fact that Keshi was able to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after 19 years, are not equipped to handle the national team.
But beyond all these opinions, for Oliseh to succeed he must, most importantly, avoid the pitfalls that made Keshi to leave the job the way he did. This is so because one can still recall the wide acceptance which Keshi enjoyed when he was first announced as the team’s chief coach after the sacking of his former team mate, Samson Siasia.
It is a well known fact that after Keshi managed to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in 2013, he forgot that his real employers were the members of the executive committee of the NFF. He practically pledged his loyalty to other authorities outside the federation.
Granted that Keshi’s anger may have been fuelled by the alleged attempt by the NFF to have him sacked during the AFCON in South Africa before he managed to win the trophy, many analysts are of the opinion that the former coach ought to have down-played his much publicized closeness to the powers that were at that time.
Instead, he carried on as if he was the one that engaged the NFF. To make matters worse, when the NFF noticed that the country’s qualification for the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea was in serious jeopardy due largely to Keshi’s style of management and sacked him after the team struggled to beat Sudan in one of the qualifying matches, the same ‘powerful men’ ordered the NFF to reverse itself.
Some of the people who deceived Keshi probably because of their own grouse against the NFF were telling anybody who cared to listen that the continuous stay in office of the present board was based on the stay of Keshi as the national team coach. Events that followed showed that the former national team captain also played along that argument hence the constant cold war that existed between him and his employers.
One of the immediate causes of Keshi’s fall was his team selection style. Oliseh must take responsibility for the players he selects for each match. Since football is like a religion in Nigeria, the new coach must ensure that he selects his team primarily based on merit and on the current form of the players. He must avoid acting as an agent. He must avoid the temptation of engaging in the selling of players which has destroyed many coaches before him. As a coach/players manager, he could be tempted to sideline a quality player who may reject his proposal of being his manager for a substandard player.

Oliseh Must Learn From Keshi’s Mistakes

One other area that Oliseh must work hard to improve on is his well known fiery temperament which forced his former team Borrusia Dortmund to expel him after punching a team mate Vahid Hashemian while on loan at VFL Bochum in 2004.
This therefore suggests that he must now realize that he is the coach and not a player because whatever he does positively or otherwise would reflect on not just how the team players but also how people will perceive them.
Nevertheless, he must ensure that he instils discipline in the team by ensuring that camp rules are observed to the letter. One of the factors that caused the country the 2015 AFCON appearance was the manner the former coach was said to have pampered the boys to the extent of allowing them to behave as they liked even on the eve of that much important game against South Africa in Uyo.
However, one factor that will work in Oliseh’s favour is the huge support he is receiving from some other informed stakeholders like former Green Eagles captain, Christian Chukwu and his team mates Segun Odegbami and Adokie Amiesimaka who believe that he is the right man for the job. The trio who are highly respected in Nigerian football circles are unanimous in their support for the NFF on the engagement of Oliseh.
Many others in that league also argue that despite the fact that Oliseh may not have the best of coaching experience, he has many other factors that will help him to succeed including his well known vast knowledge of the game which has stood him out as renowned analyst. Secondly over the years he has refused to work as an assistant to anybody which should suggest that he really has his game plan on how to repackage the team which has really lost every known playing pattern under Keshi.
The exploits of former Germany international Frank Backenbuer who did so well with the national team of his country despite the fact that he had no known coaching experience is another plus for Oliseh that he can also do well given the quality of talents that abound in Nigeria and his wealth of experience as a former player.

Eagles: Historic day as Oliseh takes over

If all goes as planned, the new National team coach, Sunday Oliseh, would be unveiled in Abuja today by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Oliseh would formally takeover the vacant job of Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, a position previously occupied by his former teammate, Stephen Keshi.
Keshi’s appointment was terminated by the federation on July 4. His exit paved way for the federation to fill the position.

Oliseh arrives

A peep into his curriculum vitae, revealed that as a player, he commenced his professional career as a defensive midfielder with Julius Berger FC of Lagos between1989 and 1990.
The 40-year-old defender and former Super Eagles skipper also played for AFC Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus FC. He scored two goals during his 54 international caps for the Eagles, with 321 appearances for his various clubs.
Oliseh is mainly remembered for scoring the winning goal against Spain in the France 1998 World Cup at the group stage, a footage that was extensively used by many television stations then.
He, however, participated in two World Cups, USA ‘94 and France 1998. Oliseh was a member of the Olympic Games gold medal winning team in the soccer event in Atlanta Olympic Games tagged Atlanta ‘96.
Oliseh also was part of the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 1994 in Tunisia. During his stint with Ajax FC Holland, he won the Dutch league title with the team.
Oliseh also won the Bundesliga with his team, Borussia Dortmund in 2001- 2002 season and also ended up as runners up in the UEFA champions’ league in the same year.
He had managed 2007 Eupen as Sports Director and in 2008, Vervietois a third division league club in Belgium.
Oliseh’s fiery temper could not be ignored in spite of his success both at the national and international level, he was sacked by Borussia Dortmund after punching a teammate, Vahid Hashemain while on loan to VFL Bochum.
At the National team, the Eagles, he had 54 outings. In January 2006, Oliseh retired from professional football at the age of 31.
The ex-Eagles player has UEFA professional coaching licence, UEFA grade A (advance) coaching Diploma, UEFA B (Basic) coaching Diploma and Business Management Diploma in Belgium.
He was also a member of FIFA study group.
In 2013, he granted an interview, ruling himself out of the Eagles coaching job in the future at which in response, said: “my wife will kill me”.

Oliseh ‘ll do more than coaching – Pinnick

BY JUDE OPARA
Abuja – As Nigerians await his official unveiling today as the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, the task of Sunday Oliseh will go beyond just coaching the players, the NFF President has said.
President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick told Sports Vanguard in Abuja that the former national team captain will, in addition to his primary responsibility, be engaged in the organization of coaching clinics for other coaches and setting out a roadmap to redefine Nigerian football.

Oliseh and Pinnick

He also allayed fears that his job may clash with the schedule of the technical director of the NFF, Shuaibu Amodu assuring that everything about the operation has been clearly defined.
“The players are the major attraction for any coach and we have the quality of players that can rule the world again so let us all support him to succeed. He will go just beyond coaching, he is going to be coaching coaches, clinics but that will not derail his primary mission of being the technical adviser of the Super Eagles.
“Talking about Oliseh’s role and that of the technical director clashing, I want to state that there will be nothing like that because everything is clearly defined even as they look intertwined. Even Oliseh himself told me that Amodu is his boss and that he cannot wait to work with him.”
On the much talked about temperament of Oliseh, Pinnick said that is of no consequence because every human being has one error or the other adding that what matters is how to manage such attribute with maturity.
The NFF boss further argued that Oliseh has presented himself as a very humble person who is also knowledgeable about his requirements as the gaffer of the national team adding that the terms of operation are clearly defined hence every party is expected to respect it.

…NFF writes Bureau of Public Procurement

From ROMANUS UGWU, Abuja
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Pinnick Amaju, has assured that every arrangement is in progress to finalize the deal with Sunday Oliseh, revealing that the federation has formally written to the Bureau of Public Procurement to notify them of the plan to hire the former Super Eagles skipper. Amaju was quick to add that Oliseh may however not be unveiled today as earlier planned.
“I want to confirm to you that we are on course for Oliseh’s contract. As I speak to you, I can inform you that he has arrived Nigeria, he has met with the technical committee who will submit their resolution to the Executive Committee of the NFF. At the end of the board meeting we will now announce it.
“I want to say that we are on course for the hiring, but what I cannot confirm to you now is whether he will still be unveiled tomorrow (today). I can only tell you that we are working towards it 100 per cent.
“As part of the procedure, we have written to the Bureau of Public Procurement and we are expecting the reply. I don’t think we will have problem from them,” he said.

Nigeria: FG Washes Hands Off Oliseh's Foreign Assistant

By Tony Ezimakor
Abuja — The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has resolved to source for funds to hire the Belgian Technical Assistant requested by incoming Super Eagles Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh.
This is because the Federal government has told the football body it would not be part of the 'wasteful' venture.
National Sports Commission (NSC) source revealed that the federal government "is opposed to any payments involving sourcing of scarce foreign exchange" because it was facing dire economic straits.
Consequently, the government had directed the NFF to source for funds, if it must engage a foreign assistant for Oliseh.
The NSC also queried why the NFF narrowed the choice to only Oliseh, a move which is against the procurement standards.
NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, admitted this in an interview on Tuesday after meeting with officials of the NSC.
"Government is complaining seriously about the harsh economic situation, but what can we do. What we are thinking is to source funds to pay the assistant, while they take care of Oliseh as they did with Keshi."
Pinnick also disclosed that the NFF has developed the same contractual template that was offered Stephen Keshi for Oliseh, and expressed the hope that Oliseh would accept the offer of N5 million monthly wage after last night's meeting with members of the NFF technical committee.
"What we've done is to develop a template, similar to what we offered the last coach. Let him look at it, if he rejects it, what are we going to do, are we willing to go to the next level. First let him accept," alluding to fears that Oliseh may reject the offer and some of the clauses in the contract.
Pinnick said that Oliseh was not just coming as a coach but to develop a playing culture for the country, saying everything would be done to motivate and support him to achieve this objective for the country.
Giving reason for his preference for Oliseh, Pinnick said that he was enticed by his hunger to bequeath a playing culture to the country and the positive recommendations that continued to pour in for Oliseh at various levels of FIFA and CAF.
"Yiou know, I have lately been involved in CAF and FIFA politics. And a name that has been a recurring decimal is Oliseh. Some ask why are you keeping him away, and why have you not involved him (Oliseh), in your plans. This is because they feel very highly about him."
Pinnick said he had also been tripped by his passion to bring something new on the table, describing Oliseh as humble and knowledgeable.
While urging support for him, Pinnick said Oliseh would use technology to make up for his relative lack of experience as most coaches that leapfrog from playing the game to full flight coaching do.

Nigeria: Doom Looms for Oliseh's Assistant

Sunday Oliseh.
By Jude Opara
Abuja — Feelers from the National Sports Commission indicate that there are lots of hurdles for Super Eagles coach designate, Sunday Oliseh to cross before his appointment could be sealed by the Nigeria Football Federation.
The Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Mohammed Sanusi was seen at the NSC secretariat, locked in a meeting with Mallam Alhassan Yakmut, the Director General of the NSC where issues surrounding the engagement of Oliseh was discussed.
The meeting which lasted for over an hour was centred on the procedure the NFF went about the recruitment of Oliseh to succeed Stephen Keshi who was sacked last week.
While the NSC was angered over the fact that the NFF went about it's business with Oliseh without seeking its approval, as stipulated by the civil service Procurement Act, the matter was said to have assumed a new dimension when it was noted that Oliseh was being engaged with a foreign assistant.
The NFF confirmed Sunday Oliseh will be working with a foreign assistant, Jean Francois Losciuto from Belgium.
The federal government is said to have issued a directive to all federal agencies warning that before any foreigner could be employed in Nigeria, such an opening must be one that there is no Nigerian who can do the job.
Our source further revealed that the main issue with the employment of Oliseh is the permission by the NFF that he should come along with a foreign assistant, a development which the NSC is said to be uncomfortable with, given the government's directive on employment of foreigners.
However the source added that the NFF may still get the clearance to unveil Oliseh as earlier planned but whether he will still get the nod to engage the foreign assistant is what is yet to be determined.

Nigeria: No Going Back On Oliseh Unveiling, NFF Insists

By David Ngobua
Despite reports in some quarters that the National Sports Commission (NSC) is not favourably disposed to the Nigeria Football Federation's plan to unveil Sunday Oliseh as Super Eagles coach, the football federation has said there is no going back on the unveiling of the former Super Eagles captain.
It was reported that the NSC had queried the manner in which the NFF went about the appointment of Oliseh as replacement for sacked coach Stephen Keshi.
However, a top official of the NFF who spoke to Daily Trust yesterday on condition of anonymity said arrangements have been concluded for the new coach to be unveiled today afternoon at the media centre of the Abuja national stadium.
He said although there were some issues concerning the unveiling, the football federation has ensured every issue is resolved amicably.
The NFF bigwig maintained that contrary to speculations that the NSC is going to halt the unveiling of Oliseh, the commission is only giving fatherly advice to the federation.
He, therefore, said come today, the football fraternity will be at the Abuja national stadium to unveil the new Super Eagles coach.
"It is true we have heard a lot of things. Some have even said the National Sports Commission has stopped the appointment of Oliseh. This is not true.
"We are going to unveil Oliseh tomorrow (today). We have concluded all the arrangements. The event which is going to be a family affair will hold at the media centre of the Abuja national stadium.
"Although there were one or two issues, everything has been sorted out and we are going ahead as planned. The NSC is not against the appointment of Oliseh so nobody should misinform Nigerians," he said.
The official therefore said Nigerian football fans and other stakeholders should give the NFF and the new Eagles coach all the support needed to succeed.

Nigeria: Is Oliseh The Messiah?

By Taofeek Lawal
Since news about the certainty of Sunday Ogochukwu Oliseh being unveiled as the next coach of the Super Eagles broke, it has been greeted by mixed feelings from soccer-loving Nigerians. Without a doubt, lovers of the game in the country have been divided along distinct lines in the expression of their opinion about his ability to tinker the once-dreaded national team to the zenith of Africa and world football where they belonged.
Coincidentally, Oliseh was part of the ‘golden generation’ of Nigerian footballers that got everyone talking in the ‘90s. Oliseh (nick-named ‘passmaster’) was discovered by self-acclaimed ‘Dutch-gerian,’ Clemens Westerhof, and went on to win the 1994 Nations Cup in Tunisia, participate in Nigeria first-ever World Cup in Atlanta, USA in 1994 and win gold medal at the football event of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics hosted by the United States.
There is no reason to doubt Oliseh’s accomplishments as a player. His career spanned glory days in AFC Ajax of Nether lands, Borussia Dortmund of Germany, Juventus in Italy, punctuated by a number of stops at other clubs in-between. Oliseh is, arguably, one of the brightest lights to have shone from Nigerian football and his commitment to the team – even after retirement – has never been in doubt. One can recall how he risked his life when he was down with malaria in a game against the Teranga Lions of Senegal in a Nations Cup game in Lagos (Nigeria-Ghana 2000) which the Super Eagles eventually won.
His finesse, match-reading ability, composure and calmness on the ball endeared him to crazy Nigerian football fans who believed that, with his inclusion in the national team then, the Eagles would always come out victorious against any opposition. This came to pass at the Atlanta Olympics Games where Nigeria’s U-23 side, fondly called ‘Dream Team 1’, overpowered teams like Brazil and Argentina to win the football gold. That godl was Africa’s first in the football event.
His achievements and sterling days as a Super Eagle, notwithstanding, very few are convinced of his ability to take the senior national male team beyond its present level. According to them, he lacks the wherewithal to take Nigerian football to the next level, because he is a green horn in the coaching business. They argue that, despite his membership of the FIFA Technical Group and being a FIFA instructor, the former Julius Berger of Lagos player remains a “green-horn” whose engagement, they agree, may spell doom for Nigerian football as he is not matured enough to handle the senior national team now.
“Oliseh is not what we want at this time for the Super Eagles. Does he possess the required and expected tactics to coach the national team? My answer is no. But if the NFF thinks that is what is good for them, I wish them good luck. I must add, though, that he should surpass Keshi’s record, that is, get the Super Eagles to the two next editions of AFCON, win them and get the team to play free-flow football and return us to the nadir of world football,” stated a football enthusiast who wouldn’t give his name.
For those who queue behind Oliseh as the national football manager, his stints as sports director at both Eupen and Vervietois – both lower league clubs in the Belgium – has justifiably prepared him for the task ahead. The fact that he runs a consultancy outfit that trains and assesses coaches worldwide, they argue, is another plus for him.
For the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, the nation’s football-ruling body has taken the right decision to pick Oliseh as Keshi’s successor.
“I absolutely feel that we have made the right choice by picking Oliseh to handle the Super Eagles. In this age of technological development, we must start doing things differently. We need a coach with sound intellectual capacity and one who has the highest coaching certificate. He is working with FIFA at the technical study group. The world recognises him and FIFA even recommended him. He has the passion to coach the Eagles and that is also important for us,” Pinnick said.

Nigeria: Is Oliseh The Messiah?

The chairman of the NFF Technical and Development Committee, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, said the federation has already mapped out how the former FC Cologne of Germany midfielder will operate. This, Anyansi-Agwu explained, that Oliseh will periodically organise [coaching] clinics and seminars for coaches of clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League to strengthen the playing philosophy [of the players] across board.
According to the technical committee’s chairman, a robust youth development programme, elite player development strategy and performance programmes to drive higher standards, among other core sustainable development programmes, will also be part of the proposal.
But a former secretary-general of the NFF, Taiwo Ogunjobi, has called on Nigerians to rally round the man who is set to be named the coach of Nigeria’s senior national male team.
“We cannot just write him off just because he has not handled any of the national teams before, but I am sure with his experience and qualifications, he should be able to turn the Super Eagles around,” Ogunjobi promised.
For a former technical director of the NFF, Kashimawo Laloko, having these qualifications does not make him a coach. If at all he has to coach the team, Laloko has advised him to add a CAF licence to his certificates because that is the ‘ground rule in Africa.
“I don’t think he has the necessary experience to be Super Eagles coach. He is educated and very organised as a player, but his success will depend on how organised he is as a coach. Managing a national team is very different from coaching a club. Besides, being a good footballer and analyst does not automatically make you a fantastic coach,” Laloko pointed out.
A member of the 1980 Nations Cup winning team and former Golden Eaglets coach, Henry Nwosu, MON, is not convinced that Oliseh will take the Super Eagles forward. Nwosu, the youngest member of the 1980 Green Eagles, opined that Oliseh may not be the right person to be appointed as Super Eagles coach. “I don’t know his coaching capability. I don’t know if he is tough enough to perform the duties of the national team coach. I know he played football and he played it very well, but, as a coach, I can’t vouch for him now,” he said emphatically.
Barring any unforeseen circumstance, Oliseh will, today, be unveiled as the next coach of the Super Eagles at the main bowl of the National Stadium, Abuja, today. One thing is certain; he has his work cut out for him.
Nigerians are waiting to exhale and so are the players who are expecting him to call the shots. Oliseh has lobbied for the job to coach the Super Eagles for some time now and now he has it.

By Augustine Akhilomen
Lagos — President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, believes that Sunday Oliseh has the capacity to change Nigerian football style to that of Germany.
Oliseh replaced sacked Stephen Keshi as Super Eagles head Coach.
Pinnick remains undaunted in his belief in Oliseh in restructuring Nigerian football.
"He (Oliseh) has been talking about how to restructure our game pattern and that is what redefined German football," Pinnick said during a radio programme.
"Their (Germany) playing pattern was restructured from the rugged football because it wasn't giving them results and they had to restructure.
"Now they do tip-tap, the same as Bayern Munich. Also look at Borrussia Dortmund and look at every other team because they are all doing tip-tap and Oliseh will do the tip-tap.
"What he will do will go beyond coaching because he says he really wants to redefine football in Nigeria and one thing I have discovered about him is that he is very passionate," Pinnick added.
Meanwhile, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Alhassan Yakmut, has disclosed that he did not frown at the recruitment procedure of the NFF in appointing Oliseh as Super Eagles coach.
"We met on Monday with the members of the NFF on the due process. So if talks are on, why should I frown at the recruitment of Oliseh as the next Super Eagles coach."

Nigeria: The Man Oliseh

If all goes as planned, the new National team coach, Sunday Oliseh, would be unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Oliseh would formally takeover the vacant job of Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, a position previously occupied by his former teammate, Stephen Keshi.
Keshi's appointment was terminated by the federation on July 4. His exit paved the way for the federation to fill the position.
A peep into his curriculum vitae revealed that as a player, he commenced his professional career as a defensive midfielder with Julius Berger FC of Lagos between1989 and 1990.
The 40-year-old defender and former Super Eagles skipper also played for AFC Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus FC. He scored two goals during his 54 international caps for the Eagles, with 321 appearances for his various clubs.
Oliseh is mainly remembered for scoring the winning goal against Spain in the France 1998 at the group stage, a footage that was extensively used by many television stations then.
He, however, participated in two World Cups, USA '94 and France 1998. Oliseh was a member of the Olympic Games gold medal winning team in the soccer event of in Atlanta Olympic Games tagged Atlanta '96.
Oliseh was also a member of the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 in Tunisia. During his stint with Ajax FC Holland, he won the Dutch league title with the team.
Oliseh also won the Bundesliga with his team, Borussia Dortmund in 2001- 2002 season and also ended up as runners up in the UEFA champions' league in the same year.
He had managed 2007 Eupen as Sports Director and in 2008, Vervietois a third division league club in Belgium.
Oliseh's fiery temper could not be ignored in spite his success both at the national and international level, he was sacked by Borussia Dortmund after punching a teammate, Vahid Hashemain, while on loan to VFL Bochum.
At the Super Eagles, he had 54 outing.
In 2013, he granted an interview, ruling himself out of the Eagles coaching job in the future at which in response, said: "my wife will kill me".
However, former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Joe Erico, believes Olise is the ideal coach for the Super Eagles because of his qualification and antecedents while playing for the team.
"I believe [Oliseh] is a good choice by the NFF and I wonder why people keep writing him off saying he lacks the experience. Will he not start from somewhere?" Erico said.
"He needs to have a starting point after all he is not the first case we have seen in football and definitely will not be the last.
"Aside from his qualification in coaching which is a proof that he is well trained, it will be easy for him to lift the fortunes of the Eagles he once captained."
Erico pointed out that he must have grown too big for his hot temperament which could affect his job, while admonishing him to do all it takes to do well.
"That was then as a player. I'm sure with his training and age, he would have overgrown that. Even now, he still needs a little bit of that to help instill discipline in his team," he continued.
"The NFF must have given him the terms to work with and I'm sure Oliseh knows what they want. I wish him all the best and hope he doesn't fail Nigerians.
"He needs to look into every area because there is a vacuum already in the Super Eagles which he must fill," he concluded.
Oliseh becomes the fifth player in the 1994 class of Eagles to handle the senior national team after Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi and Stephen Keshi.

Oliseh is Nigeria's new coach

Sunday Oliseh
Sunday Oliseh has been unveiled as the Super Eagles head coach by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in a presentation ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old former Nigerian captain starts work with immediate effect and replaces a former international teammate, Stephen Keshi, who had his contract terminated earlier this month.
NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, at the unveiling ceremony likened Oliseh to Spanish coach, Pep Guardiola and says he believes the new Nigerian trainer will succeed.
Pinnick added that Oliseh will be given total support while in charge as Super Eagles head coach.
"I can tell you that we have just signed our own Pep Guardiola. He is Africa's Pep Guardiola, and I have every belief that he will succeed. On our own part we will do everything humanly possible to make sure that Oliseh succeeds by giving him 100 per cent support," Pinnick told a packed hall during the official presentation in Abuja on Wednesday.
The new Nigeria manager will be assisted by Jean-Francois Losciuto, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu, who will be the goalkeeping coach.
The new Super Eagles gaffer arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday to finalise the deal and has now been confirmed to take charge.
Oliseh's first assignment wil be the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Tanzania in Da res Salaam.

The ‘Intellectual One’ comes to the slaughter house – A peep into Sunday Oliseh’s mind

Highly cerebral and a definite modern man, the 40-year-old brings lots of ideas to the Nigeria job but will he succeed in an environment where hardly anything works?
By Lolade Adewuyi
“A lot of people have asked, ‘why doesn’t he go to coach the Super Eagles?’ Man, I wanna live long,” said Sunday Oliseh to a round of applause as the audience hung on every word during his appearance at the TEDx Euston in England in 2014.
“Inasmuch as I know I am very well qualified for it and I love my country passionately, but I felt that I could share my experience by putting my thoughts on what I found out and what I developed into some means where people can visit and that’s why I set up my website,” he said.
This week, the former Super Eagles captain crosses a threshold – from being the intellectual and armchair critic, rather TV pundit, to being working and practicing all his lofty ideas on the field with the Nigeria national team.
It is a role that has burnt up many in the past and a thankless position that could turn one into an enemy of 170million people faster than any other. Ask his forerunners Amodu Shaibu, Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia and Stephen Keshi and they would tell about the pressure of satisfying every household coach.
“It is no secret that managing Nigeria’s national senior team is a burden and nightmare very few top coaches in the world want to bother doing, not because the talent or prospects are not there but more or less because working with [these] administrators in the Nigerian Football Federation is a nightmare,” he wrote in a post on his blog after the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations victory, as he predicted that the fortunes of the team would not improve.
So why is he taking the job, one is forced to ask.
Young, debonair and good looking, at 40, Oliseh is the quintessential modern man – active on social media, a writer, talker and analyst. He’s been working as a member of the Fifa Technical Study Group since 2013 and holds a Uefa Pro Coaching License.
Despite never coaching a major side, many think he is what Nigerian football has been waiting for, someone with a lot of ideas who can communicate in five languages and is able to hold audiences spellbound.
His predecessor Stephen Keshi left mixed feelings at press conferences. An Iranian journalist told this writer at the World Cup in Brazil how he found him accessible. He could speak English and French easily but was usually unable to talk about defined team tactics.
Nigeria has gone a notch higher with Oliseh who speaks English, French, German, Italian and a little Dutch. Plus he talks tactics for a living.
With Keshi, many journalists were left wondering about his tactical plans even during post-match briefings. He was always guarded, perhaps a hint of lack of confidence.
There will be none of that with Oliseh, who regularly analyses football on continental TV station SuperSport, and is at ease writing about everything from corruption in politics and sports to eulogies and criticism of former team mates.
In a 2013 post, he hit out at Keshi’s handling of criticism and his inability to “differentiate constructive criticisms from destructive ones” and then declared that he was not out to take his job.
In recent times he has spoken about the need to treat national team captain Vincent Enyeama with respect, after the 101-caps goalkeeper was asked to face a disciplinary panel for criticizing the choice of Kaduna for last month’s Afcon 2017 qualifier against Chad.
With his record of being a no-nonsense leader during his time as skipper of the Super Eagles, it is curious how he would handle clashes between the NFF and players when he takes over.
He has not hidden his disdain for administrators of the national team and how they have handled player finances in the past. “As captain of the Super Eagles for years and player for a decade, in several competitions, we never had a competition without having to confront this problem of money, and now eleven years after retirement from it, the problem is still there,” he wrote in another post.

The ‘Intellectual One’ comes to the slaughter house – A peep into Sunday Oliseh’s mind

There is a lot of adulation at the hiring of Oliseh and many people are optimistic that Nigeria would finally get an ideas man.
However, there is a lot of difference between ideas and practice. How well the former midfielder can handle the heat will determine his legacy.
Can he make the difficult decisions? Can he find new talent to improve the fortunes of the Super Eagles? Can he do this without falling to the lure of easy money from player agents like his some of his predecessors?
Can he skillfully meander in that delicate place between NFF expectations and players’ agitations? Will he be able to deal with inflated egos of national team stars?
Will he measure up to fans’ expectations for their team? In his evocative TEDxEuston speech, he talked about the dangers of failing to excite the fans.
“The good thing about playing for Nigeria is that, the moment you play your first game you’re a superstar. But the moment you play your first bad game, even your father would call and say, ‘My son you’ve put me in trouble,’” he said.
Can Sunday Oliseh stand the heat in Nigeria’s pressure cooker and remain as cheerful and intellectual?
In 2002 he was forced to retire early after being dropped from the squad to the World Cup in Japan and South Korea. There was uproar against him and his supposed ‘mafia’ which administrators claimed was trying to hold the country to ransom. He was set up for the kill and hounded out.
Has he set himself up for a second time slaughter? God help him.
Sunday Oliseh’s Words on Marble
On Foreign vs Local Players for Nigeria
“If you are a foreign-based pro, it is not because these foreign clubs want to do you a favour, it is because you are one of the best from your country, simple. By gradually trying to wage a war against these players who ply their trade week in week out at the highest level leagues in the world we are turning our back to our best and waging a war against ourselves, they are Nigerians too I must remind.”
“They should not be cast away just because our technical crew lacks the skills to manage them at the detriment of Nigeria.”
On Confederations Cup failure and home-based Players
“My belief is not that we should not use home-based players, far from it, if Sunday Mba was not at the Nations Cup in 2013 for Nigeria I do not think we might have won it, at least like we did. He, however, was well surrounded by Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike, etc and made his contributions productive and easier. We saw how this poor boy struggled at the Confederations Cup just 4 months after doing us proud in South Africa! Oboabona is one of my favourites and with some more polishing would go places internationally!”
On difference between national team Coach/Manager
“National team coaches are called Managers because they are not supposed to form players due to the short time they have to work with them, but they are supposed to be good at selecting like or complementary players, mix them up to produce results.”
On criticism
“Stephen Keshi is a good coach. But one quality that successful and long lasting coaches have, is that they have always had a nose to differentiate constructive criticisms from destructive ones and act on them even if they do not agree in public!”
“Criticisms without proposing solutions is what Losers and underachievers do!”
On money issues in the national team
“Growing up as a kid in the 80’s I heard my uncles and parents talk about this problem. As captain of the Super Eagles for years and player for a decade, in several competitions, we never had a competition without having to confront this problem of money, and now eleven years after retirement from it, the problem is still there, wow! Will it ever end? Is it a curse or do we just accept that it is part of our DNA?”
“Playing for your country is a patriotic and honourable gesture just as it is to be part of the government and the military. Just as the others do get paid, national team players, irrespective of where they play or what they earn, deserve compensation for their services to their homeland.”
“Recently the NFF has been screaming at the top of their lungs their lack of funds to operate. That I feel is quite unfortunate when one considers the fact that we are one of the richest nations in Africa and the world! Something must be wrong somewhere and somehow.”

The ‘Intellectual One’ comes to the slaughter house – A peep into Sunday Oliseh’s mind

On Africa/Asia’s role in World football
“I feel for decades the World Cup was called a World Cup without real credibility. How could countries claim to have been world champions prior to 1974 when Africa had no representatives at the World Cup, as Zaire emerged only in 1974 in Germany.”
“How could we continue with any real change in the structure of World football if there is no equitable distribution of its management that includes African and Asian involvement?”
“Our continent is the greatest continent on earth. We keep saying God help us, I think when the man looks down and sees all our resources…my country is 170million people, China is a threat to the world now because of their numbers, Nigeria is a threat to the world because we’re a 170million people, Africa is a threat to the world. What does that tell us? If we decide, as a race, that we want to succeed, nobody can stop us.”
On family ties affecting African footballers
“African footballers, I feel, have to remain Africans in spirit and help out their families as much as they can. There is a blessing in sharing but they should know how [much] they share.”
“As an African, your family is always an asset to you, it all depends on how you manage it. As long as a gun is not put at your head to spend your earnings you are responsible for your viability or bankruptcy!”
On coaching Nigeria
“It is no secret that managing Nigeria’s national senior team is a burden and nightmare very few Top coaches in the world want to bother doing, not because the talent or prospects are not there but more or less because working with [these] administrators in the Nigeria Football Federation is a nightmare!”
“If there is one thing I believe Nigeria’s victory [at Afcon 2013] said out loud, it is that African coaches are good! The Ethiopians, Cape Verdeans and of course Nigeria, played about the best football of the just concluded AFCON 2013 and they were coached by Africans. So, Nigeria has to renew the confidence in Nigerian coaches especially at the National team level, and most importantly at the club level.”
On public corruption in Africa
“Corruption is the reason why we are still suffering and the standard of living in Africa is so low. Everything in Nigeria is what the world dreams of: Great weather, green and fertile land, ridiculed with natural resources, manpower resources thanks to our population, loving and laughing people, relatively unpolluted air… the list is endless and still we are way behind in comfort.”
“We fail to acknowledge that government (public) wealth does not belong to those who are elected to manage them on the behalf of the people, but the people’s wealth. Each time a corrupt leader loots, he just robbed you and I.”
On compensation for athletes
“Nigeria’s sports heroes are often left to rot after making their country proud. President Buhari will motivate interest in national glory by ensuring better compensation of our sportstars when they represent Nigeria.”
“The golden generation of 1994 is yet to receive its promised houses by the Nigerian Government. Today, 21 years after the fact some have sadly passed away without receiving any thanks for putting Nigeria on the world map of respectable sports nations.”
On being a footballer
“The good thing about playing for Nigeria is that, the moment you play your first game you’re a superstar. But the moment you play your first bad game, even your father would call and say, ‘My son you’ve put me in trouble.’”
“Education from my school days was the difference in my life. It made it easy for me to analyze easier.”
“As a soccer player, the worst thing that can happen to you is retirement because when we retire, to the man that is 65 years-old we’re still babies. As an African you’re rich only if your family is rich with you, so you have to cater for your family.
“A lot of people have asked, “why doesn’t he go to coach the Super Eagles?” Man, I wanna live long! Inasmuch as I know I am very well qualified for it and I love my country passionately, but I felt that I could share my experience by putting my thoughts on what I found out and what I developed into some means where people can visit and that’s why I set up my website.”

Sunday Oliseh is new Nigeria coach

The former Super Eagles captain has been presented to the public as its new coach in Abuja, two weeks after another former captain Stephen Keshi was sacked
By Shina Oludare
Sunday Oliseh has been unveiled by the Nigeria Football Federation, replacing sacked Stephen Keshi, as coach of the Super Eagles.
The 40-year-old was the overwhelming favourite to be handed the role after the ‘Big Boss’ was shown the exit door by the NFF two weeks ago.
And on Wednesday, Oliseh finally signed a contract with the NFF which ties him to the Super Eagles until 2020, becoming the fifth player in the 1994 class to handle the senior national team after Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi and Keshi.
"It's a great honour to be coach of this great nation,” said Oliseh at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja.
"I'm not coming as a messiah. I'm coming as a man who wants to serve his country and give 150%.
"Gone are the days when we had individual players who can win games on their own. But we have potential," he said.
He also laid down the law to players of Nigerian origin on his requirements before they can feature for his team.
"No player outside of first division in Nigeria or elsewhere will play for the Super Eagles. We will work together with the technical committee because if we fail, they fail,” he concluded.
The ex-Nigeria international will now hope to inspire an immediate improvement in the Eagles’ fortunes, starting with a win against Tanzania in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in September.

Oliseh gets 3-year contract

by Samm Audu
Sunday Oliseh has been given a three-year contract as Super Eagles coach.
AfricanFootball.com further gathered that the contract will be guided by his meeting several targets set by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
NFF confirm Oliseh's appointment
The targets will include qualification to next year’s AFCON in Gabon, among others.
There was a debate at the NFF executive committee level over the tenure of the contract for the new coach.
His backroom staff will include Belgian assistant Jean Francois Loscuito, Salisu Yusuf and goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu, who has been specially handpicked by Oliseh himself.
The NFF will later on Wednesday present Oliseh as successor to Stephen Keshi, who was fired from his post for a breach of trust.

Play Top League or Forget Eagles Warns Oliseh

New Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has fired a warning he will only consider players who feature in the top leagues overseas.
Oliseh’s predecessor Stephen Keshi was known to call up players from the lower leagues overseas.
But the new Eagles supremo said this must change.
"If you are not playing in first division in anywhere in the world and in Nigeria, you cannot play for the Super Eagles henceforth," Oliseh warned at a media presentation in Abuja on Wednesday.
Oliseh Pep Guardiola of Africa
"However players coming from the under-aged teams are the only exception to this rule."
Oliseh said it is an honour to lead the Eagles now as a coach, but he alone cannot turn around the footballing fortunes of the country.
"It’s a great honour to be a coach of this nation," he said.
"First of all, I am not coming as a Messiah. I am not coming as a man who can single handedly turn Nigeria to Germany.
"I am coming in to do my best and give if possible 150% all the time.
"The state we are now in Nigeria I think we are all not happy with. Gone are the days we have individual players who can single handedly win a match for you. But we have the potentials and that is our belief and the players must know that it's an honour to be invited to the national team."

Oliseh: I’m not here to wage war

New Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has sounded out a clear message: “I come to serve my country, not to wage a war.”
There were several questions and insinuations at Wednesday’s colourful official presentation ceremony bothering on Oliseh’s perceived ‘stubborness,’ but the former captain swiftly differentiated between being principled and being stubborn.
It would be recalled Oliseh took on the country's sports officialdom at the 2002 AFCON in Mali and as a result he and several other players including Finidi George were left out of the 2002 World Cup.
“I have come to serve, and the NFF have promised to give me all the support I need to succeed,” said the former Nigeria captain.
“They are the employers and I am the employee. That distinction has to be appreciated at all times.
“I have had meetings with members of the technical and development committee, led by Anyansi-Agwu, very knowledgeable people all. I have met members of the executive committee and the general secretary.
“I believe we will all work together excellently. It is a huge honour to the head coach of Nigeria.

I’m Not A Messiah –Oliseh

By Peter Edema - Lagos
Former Super Eagles’ captain, Sunday Ogorchukwu Oliseh, formally resumed as Head Coach of the team on Wednesday, warning Nigerians against expecting him to turn things around within a twinkle of an eye, saying, “I am not a Messiah.”

[/img]

The incoming Super Eagles Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh
Oliseh, who signed a three-year contract on Wednesday, declared, “One thing I will say, dear compatriots, is that I am not a Messiah. I have come to do my very best, give 150%, to take Nigerian football to the next level, with the support of my assistants, the NFF and relevant stakeholders. I am optimistic that we will lift the Nigerian game to a new height.
“I have come to serve, and the NFF has promised to give me all the support I need to succeed. They are the employers and I am the employee. That distinction has to be appreciated at all times.
“The job doesn’t start tomorrow, it starts now, and we need the support of everyone because together we can make our country great.
“I have had meetings with members of the Technical and Development Committee, led by Chief Anyansi-Agwu, I have met members of the Executive Committee and the General Secretary. I believe we will all work together excellently. It is a huge honour to be the Head Coach of Nigeria.”
Oliseh said that he accepted the job because of his belief in the country and the NFF.
“I am here today because I believe in the NFF and the big project before us. We had a passionate discussion and the result is the mandate to manage Nigeria,” he said.
“We have the talent to change our fortunes, to regain the respect we once had and match that with results,” Oliseh told BBC Sport.
“This is the biggest job in African football. With everyone’s support we can get the Super Eagles flying again.”
He promised that only those playing in top leagues in the world would be given the opportunity to fight for shirts. The only caveat, he added, was that Nigerians who distinguished themselves at the under age teams would be given a chance to fight for shirts.
“My assistants and myself will not invite to the camp, any player who is not playing in the top division in the recognised Leagues of the world, including Nigeria. The only exception would be those players from any of the age-grade National Teams that we find exceptional and deserving of an opportunity to try and win shirts in the senior team.
There were several questions and insinuations bothering on Oliseh’s perceived ‘stubborness,’ but the former captain swiftly differentiated between being principled and being stubborn.
Pinnick announced that the NFF would immediately pay Oliseh three months’ and his assistants in advance.
Oliseh, who played professionally in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, and won Olympic football gold, Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver and bronze and played in two FIFA World Cup finals, signed a three-year contract with an option for an additional one year.
He will be assisted by Belgian coach Jean Francois Losciuto.
The NFF leadership later presented Oliseh and his assistants to the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Alhassan Saleh Yakmut.

Oliseh can’t perform magic – Amiesimaka

Former international, Adokiye Amiesimaka, has warned Nigerians not to expect miracles from newly-signed Super Eagles coach as the team continue their race to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Oliseh, a former Nigeria captain, was unveiled as the successor of Stephen Keshi in Abuja on Wednesday after agreeing to a three-year deal.
The Super Eagles will travel to Tanzania in September to face the Taifa Stars in one of their AFCON qualifiers after winning their first game against Chad last month, and Oliseh is expected to introduce far-reaching changes in order to strengthen the team ahead of their next challenge.
“My worry is not about Oliseh; my worry is about the players he has to work with. We shouldn’t expect any magic from him because we do not have the players that are very knowledgeable in the sport. They may have the desire and the natural talent to play, but they lack the rudiments of football which Oliseh is not expected to teach them at the senior level,” Amiesimaka said on Wednesday.
“Our players should have gone through age grade football where they would have learnt the basics in the sport. But as it is, none of them have that required knowledge. That’s what it means to have youth development.
“He, however, stands a better chance of relying on the current Flying Eagles who were formerly in the U-17 team.”
The 1980 AFCON winner said the Nigeria Football Federation made the right choice is appointing the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder, insisting that the appointment did not need ratification from the technical department of the football body.
He said, “Oliseh is qualified to manage the Super Eagles. You don’t need a coaching certificate to manage the national team. Franz Beckenbauer, a former West Germany international, had no coaching certificate when he led Germany to World Cup glory in 1990. It is only in this part of the world that we lay so much emphasis on coaching certificates.
“Coaching is only needed at the youth level, where the players are taught the rudiments of football. But at the senior level, Oliseh will only need to manage the players, manage their egos and instil a playing concept or philosophy in the team. His major assignment will be to look for players that can fit into his strategies for the team.
“For anyone to be an assessor, he must be better qualified than the person he is assessing. The NFF has a technical department headed by Shaibu Amodu, but are the people in the department more qualified than Oliseh himself? Could they have objectively assessed Oliseh for the Eagles job?”
Amiesimaka also dismissed fears that Oliseh’s ego could have an adverse effect on the team, saying the new manager is in the best position to caution erring players.
“We all played pranks as children and Oliseh can’t be an exception. Once you become an adult, you start teaching the younger ones about what is right and wrong as if you never did wrong in your childhood days. But it’s normal,” he said.
“I don’t expect a dummy to be my national team coach; I would want a man with passion and character to be in charge of the team. Oliseh may have his weaknesses but the important point is to know when and how to use his strengths and weaknesses in any given circumstance. I won’t condemn a man because he has a temper as long as he knows how to manage it. Nobody is flawless.”

“The federation has been working as a team. We’ve signed the Pep Guardiola of Africa. He will deliver and as federation, we are ready to give him 100% support that will make him succeed.
“To underscore our seriousness, we are going to pay three salaries in advances. The next time we have to pay him is October.

He said unlike before Nigeria no longer boasts of individual players that can win matches, but added that Nigeria has the potential to rule the world again.
“It’s a great honour to be given the opportunity to coach my country. I’m not coming as a messiah but a man who wants to serve. Gone are the days when we have individual players playing. That’s what we have during my generation. But if we have the potential to play as team,” he said.
