Nigerians in UCL - Musa, Onazi Eye Group Stage Tickets

Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Efe Ambrose and Nosa Igiebor will continue their chase for a spot in the group stage of the Uefa Champions League this week.
Musa's CSKA Moscow will welcome Sporting Club of Portugal to Russia today after they lost 2-1 in the first leg last week.
The Nigerian, who has been in good scoring form this season, would hope to upturn the deficit in order to reach the round-robin stage.
Onazi and Lazio head to Germany to face Bayer Leverkusen with a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Rome.
Onazi, who started the first game and played for 53 minutes before being substituted, would look to make greater impact in today's game at the Bay Arena.
The play-off winners will join up with the 22 teams already confirmed for Thursday's draw.

Nigeria: Uefa Champions League - Mixed Fortunes for Super Eagles Star

By Tunde Eludini
The Super Eagles midfielder, Nosa Igiebor, is through to the Group phase of the UEFA Champions League as his Israeli club, Maccabi Hafia, on Tuesday night played at a nervy 1-1 draw with Swiss side FC Basel.
Maccabi having secured a 2-2 draw in the first leg pulled through via the away goals rule as both teams were tied on three goals apiece.
It was Basel that drew the first blood in Tuesday night's second leg playoff tie as Luca Zuffi netted the opener just 11 minutes into the game.
Eran Zahavi who was the hero in the first leg came to Maccabi's rescue yet again -as he banged in the equaliser on the night in the 24th minute.
From then, both teams huffed and puffed but there were no more goals. Igiebor was on the pitch for 70 minutes but also fired blanks.
Despite that, Maccabi pulled through and would now wait to be paired along Europe's top team in the Group phase
It was, however, a different kettle of fish for Igiebor's compatriot at the Louis stadium in France, as Elerson Echiejile and his Monaco teammates lost 4-3 on aggregate to Valencia despite defeating the Spanish side 2-1 in the second leg.
Echiejile was booked in the 68th minute before latching on to a Bernard's cross to score in the 75th minute of the encounter.
For Echiejile it was his 15th appearance in the competition.
Also Igiebor national teammate in Sweden, Efe Ambrose's Celtic crashed out of the UEFA Champions League play-off to Malmo FF 4-3 on aggregates having won the first leg 3-2.
Ambrose was an unused substitute in the defeat

Underappreciated Ahmed Musa indispensable to Nigeria

The CSKA Moscow forward has established himself as a mainstay in the Super Eagles, but remains criminally underrated by the majority.
By Solace Chukwu
There are few more glamorous positions in world football than that of the winger.
Sure, the No.9 gets the goals and the acclaim for victory, the No.10 tearful adoration, but there is an enigma, a mystique around the debonair wing-man—he is perhaps the sole embodiment of individuality in a team-focused sport; he must serve the whole, but can only do so completely when allowed to indulge.
This explains, to an extent, why Ahmed Musais one of Nigeria’s most underrated footballers. Since his debut in 2011, the CSKA Moscowman has made 49 appearances for the Super Eagles, tallying 10 goals.
In spite of this return, there remains an element of indifference toward Musa from the Nigerian public. He is tolerated rather than loved, greeted with sighs and shrugs, and is often the butt of heckling. Compare, for instance, the difference in popular opinion between him and Peter Odemwingie. The latter has the sultry good looks and mystery that is relatable in wingers; however, his 65 caps for Nigeria have yielded 11 goals—some of these playing as a striker.

Why does Odemwingie receive so much more affection than Musa?
Musa lacks the archetypal comeliness of the Stoke forward, his frame is slight and his gait is awkward. The rather inelegant sobriquet ‘Aboki’ – literally ‘friend’ - a pejorative term for people of the Hausa extraction, has stuck; one undeterred by the fact the former Kano Pillars man hails from Edo state in the South on his mother's side.
It also encapsulates the playful peer-group ribbing that is common among the youth, especially in the wake of minor indiscretions, perceived or actual. In the eyes of the majority, Musa’s abilities remain flawed by poor decision-making, a trait most associated with a lack of maturity and/or savvy.
Quite aside the snobbish inaccuracy of this view, complete with its condemnable tribalistic undertones, there is some basis for the view about the player’s style. Frustrations have always lingered over the erratic nature of his decision-making in the final third, as well as a perceived ‘inconsistency’.
This is worsened by his occasional deployment on the right flank, which totally negates his strengths: he never has been an efficient crosser, and tends to over-estimate both the amount of space between himself and the touchline, as well as his own pace. As a result, he frequently runs the ball out of play, precipitating groans and eye-rolling.
However, the presence of a blemish in one’s playing style is true for just about every footballer—it is a sport with a vast range of skill-sets, all of which cannot be mastered absolutely. The only two players who come close to filling out the polygon – Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – are, at best, gods and, at worst, freakish elements of Nature-on-acid: possessed with a crazed, over-active imagination. For the rest of mortal humanity, it will suffice for the strengths to outnumber and outweigh the weaknesses.
Musa will never fly that high. However, he is quick, blindingly so, and has great technique when striking the ball. He is also surprisingly cool in front of goal: witness his finishes against Argentina at the World Cup in Brazil, giving Manchester United’s Sergio Romero the eyes before finishing near post; and in October against Sudan in Abuja.

Underappreciated Ahmed Musa indispensable to Nigeria

Musa |Flawed, but his qualities are hard to deny
Then again, these traits were already apparent four years ago when he debuted for Nigeria, and set the world alight at the U20 World Cup in Colombia. Since then, toughened up by spells at centre-forward for CSKA, Musa has bulked up quite noticeably - all the better to battle muscle-bound centre-backs with – and has the best movement off the ball in the national side.
His first touch is also much improved. Playing on the left, this makes him a useful asset for switches of play, where he can isolate a full-back and either come inside to link up or shoot, or go down the outside with his searing pace.
If there is an element of anarchy to his play which occasionally infuriates, it is a double-edged sword. Attacking is, after all, about breaking the opposition’s defensive links—if positional play and intricate passing fail to do the trick, a little chaos factor serves to pick the lock.
This unique blend of qualities, albeit dappled with slight imperfections, make Ahmed Musa indispensable to the national team. When Sunday Oliseh reveals his starting 11 to face Tanzania on the 5th of September, you can be sure Musa’s name will be there, just as you can be sure it will be received with a sigh and a shrug. Five goals already this season in nine games for CSKA Moscow is proof-positive we cannot begrudge him.
He may not be everyone’s cup of tea but, Vincent Enyeama aside, Musa is the first name on the Super Eagles team list.

Mikel, Moses & the African players who need transfers before the window closes

Alex Song: Cameroon midfielder Alex Song looks highly unlikely to force his way back into the Barcelona starting XI under Luis Enrique this season. Indeed, it’s something of a surprise that he remains at the Nou Camp, in light of considerable interest from the Premier League. West Ham United have appeared close to a move at stages this summer, but is the former Arsenal man holding out for something better?

Victor Moses: The Chelsea forward impressed sporadically in pre-season, and appeared likely to complete an unlikely u-turn at Stamford Bridge and return to prominence. He was even praised by Jose Mourinho, and there was reason to believe he would have a role to play this term. However, the arrival of Pedro pushes Moses down the pecking order once more, and both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur may be prepared to offer him a way out.

Kevin-Prince Boateng: No player on this list needs a move as urgently as Prince, who has been ostracised at Schalke. A return to prominence at the Veltins Arena looks unlikely—at least while Horst Heldt is in town—and the Ghana midfielder will not be allowed to leave for nothing. There have been suitors in England, the USA, and Turkey, but after a move to Al Ittihad fell through, it’s hard to know what tangible options the former Milan man has on the table.

John Obi Mikel: For the last few transfer windows, John Obi Mikel has been tipped for a Stamford Bridge departure, yet he remains at the club. He has only made one cameo so far this season, and with Kurt Zouma growing in prominence as an option at the base of the midfield, it’s hard to see Mikel enjoying too much playing time this term…despite the troubles of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic. Mikel could be a key performer at a top-half EPL side, but will the opportunity arise before the window closes?

Oshaniwa: Hearts can make a statement by winning the league

The Nigerian believes the Maroons can underline their Scottish Premier League title credentials this season by emerging as champions.
By Samuel Ahmadu
Nigeria defender Juwon Oshaniwa believes Hearts have all it takes to emerge as Scottish League champions at the end of the season.
Robbie Neilson’s men sit atop the Scottish Premier League table in the midst of a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions, and have scored 13 times.
And Oshaniwa who was on from start to finish in his side’s 3-0 win over Patrick Thistle over the weekend has made it clear that winning the league title is their main focus.
"It's been God all the way for us winning all our games. He has started the great work within us," Oshaniwa told Goal.
"And I trust he will surely perfect it till the end of the season with celebration. For motivation, the fans and management as well as we the players were fully motivated to make a statement.
"I'm not surprised seeing us at the top because the mood and spirit around here is high. Everyone wants to give his best.
"God has been the source of our power, strength, courage and energy. Above all our eagerness and enthusiasm to prove ourselves as individuals have been great.
“It's been a great and exciting moment for us as players and we are confidence to conquer the Scottish Premier League. We are on course and sure our strong spirit will take us far,” he concluded.
Hearts travel to four-placed Hamilton Academical F.C for their next league outing on Saturday.

Champions League: Ogu Eager To Meet Mourinho

By James Agberebi:
Israel-based Nigerian midfielder, John Ogu, has expressed his delight that he will have the opportunity to meet Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, when the English champions travel to Israel to face Nosa Igiebor’s Maccabi Tel Aviv.
In the UEFA Champions League draw on Thursday, Chelsea were grouped alongside FC Porto, Dynamo Kyiv and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Group G.
Reacting to the draw, Ogu wrote on his Twitter handle: “So I get to meet the Special One (Mourinho) when they come to Israel.”
Ogu’s club Hapoel Be’er Sheva are not in the Champions League but the Super Eagles midfielder is apparently excited by the presence of the very popular Chelsea coach in Israel and will likely attend the match between Chelsea and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Meanwhile, other Nigerian players whose clubs are involved in this year’s Champions League include Ahmed Musa’s CSKA Moscow, and Moses Simon’s Gent.
Barcelona are the reigning champions of the competition after they beat Juventus 3-1 in the final last season in Berlin, Germany.

‘Why Eagles dropped Gbolahan Salami’

WARRI Wolves striker Gbolahan Salami’s passport palaver caused him to lose concentration and form and so he was dropped by the Super Eagles, AfricanFootball.com has learnt
Salami was a surprise exclusion from a list of players from the domestic league who will continue training with the Super Eagles in Abuja in the new week.
A top official told AfricanFootball.com that the non-release of his international passport by the Norwegian embassy in Lagos was a big distraction for the striker and as a result his form suffered.
“Salami’s mind was not in the training camp. He really wants to move to Norway and the non-release of his passport by the embassy really took his mind away from the training camp. This affected his form and it was why he was dropped,” revealed the official.
“He will most likely get his passport and fly out to sign in Norway before the transfer window closes. Thereafter he will be better focused when he is invited again by the Eagles.”
Salami scored when Nigeria beat visiting Chad 2-0 in an AFCON qualifier in June in Kaduna.
AfricanFootball.com further gathered that Nasarawa United midfielder Bature Yaro, Sunshine Stars striker Tunde Adeniji and Ezekiel Bassey from Enyimba were seriously considered for the final squad to Tanzania.
“Adeniji has been scoring goals in test matches, but already we have enough strikers from abroad and that was why he was not picked,” a source disclosed.

Aggreh, Ezenwa listed for AFCON tie
•Obaroakpo, Ezenwa, Kwambe, Usman too

Nigeria head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has picked the final six players from the country’s top flight to make the trip with the overseas-based stars for the 2017 Afcon qualifier against Tanzania.
Oliseh picked Solomon Kwambe of Warri Wolves, Sunshine Stars goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Austin Obaroakpo of Abia Warriors, under-23 star Mohammed Usman, Prince Aggreh of Sunshine Stars and Sharks wing back Chima Akas.
The Super Eagles gaffer, supersport.comwas informed, made the announcement of the six selected players after Thursday’s warm-up game against non-league side, Amakson Soccer Academy.
Earlier this week, Oliseh stated that the players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) have shown “lots of promise” after a week of their training camp in Abuja in preparation for the Afcon qualifying match against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania.
Despite dropping a large pool of players from the Nigerian top flight, Oliseh told the players that he was impressed by the way they made it difficult for him and his assistants to make the choice of six players.
Before Oliseh reeled out the names of the six players on Thursday night, he had earlier put three past Amakson Soccer Academy, in a tune-up.
NPFL leading scorer, Tunde Adeniji scored twice and Wikki Tourists striker, Godwin Obaje, scored as the Super Eagles cruised to a 3-0 win in the lowkey friendly.
There was also time within the game for El-Kanemi Warriors attacking midfielder, Ifeanyi Matthew, to miss a spot kick while Warri Wolves goalkeeper Okiemute Odah, among those not listed in the six by Oliseh, saved a penalty awarded to Amakson Soccer Academy.
Oliseh has now sent home all of the NPFL players to join up with their clubs for this weekend’s matches while the six selected will return to the Abuja lodging camp to continue preparations for the Tanzania match along with the overseas-based players.
Supersport.comhas also been made to understand that Oliseh is keen on travelling to Dar es Salaam with a team of 24 players as he has his eyes on the international friendly with Niger Republic as well though the Tanzania game remains high priority.
Nigeria are scheduled to face Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on September 5.

Enyeama loses mother, apologizes for missing Tanzania game
Sep 3, 2015 03:06:18
The Lille goalkeeper’s parent has passed away and it is the reason for his opting out of the Nigeria game against the Taifa Stars
Vincent Enyeama’s mother has passed away it has emerged, hours after Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh told media that the goalkeeper opted out of the Super Eagles ahead of their trip to Tanzania without an excuse.
The 101-capped Enyeama posted a message on his Instagram page on Wednesday afternoon apologizing to Nigeria fans but fell short of stating the reason for his absence.
However, it has been learnt that the goalkeeper’s parent died and it was the reason for his painfully written apology on Instagram.
“So sorry I won't make it out there to wear this shirt,” Enyeama wrote alongside an artist’s impression of him in a Nigeria jersey.
“So sorry that I won't be standing there singing the anthem of my sweet NIGERIA. #WEARENIGERIA.
“I wish that this darkness didn't come in daylight. I wish that I could turn back the hand of time. I wish,I just wish that I could take away this pain. Let the rain wash away this pain,” the bereaved player concluded.

The problem is that the NFF are the poorest organisers of events, they always seem to only do the basics, we need a separate organisation in charge of the little things that they always time after time seem to miss.

You're right Sir. I can't even imagine what will happen if the english fail to watch their national team playing live on their local stations for a whole 90mins either home or away. That reminds me of the controversial goal scored by Lampard@ 2010 world cup match between Germany N England which led to alot of protest cos the missed that part due to cable network/service problem. You see the problem here is that, we always see wrongs to me normal in Nigeria. If not, what does it take to stage a protest on such issues of national importance and harmony. We only know how to stage protests when politics of sentiments and region protectionism is involved.

Rangers keep fumbling Agbim frozen out

Agbim - Has been frozen out at Enugu Rangers since August 16
Goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim has remained frozen out at Enugu Rangers since his fumbles cost the Enugu club a home game against FC IfeanyiUbah in August.
Rangers lost 3-2 to IfeanyiUbah and Agbim was widely blamed for the home loss and even needed police escort to escape the wrath of angry fans.
Rangers have picked goalkeepers Akor Itodo and Uche Okafor for Sunday’s gome game against struggling Kwara United.
Others named on the match day squad include Pape Sane, skipper Okey Odita, Nnamdi Anyasado, Chinedu Justice, Etim Matthew, Hope Fibersima, Christian Madu, Osas Okoro, Bobby Clement, Godwin Aguda, Kola Anubi and Chinedu Udeagha.
Rangers are 12thon the table with 40 points from 30 matches.

this guy needs to leave the shores of Nigeria cuz im sure if it was any other keeper they wouldn't have needed police escort. He has worn out his welcome with naija fans so if he goes to maybe Israel and does well maybe then people will lose the hard feelings they have for him.

Efe Ambrose sacrifices himself for Celtic

Celtic star Efe Ambrose
Nigeria international Efe Ambrose played the sacrificial lamb for his Scottish side Celtic not to lose at home to Juwon Oshaniwa's Hearts on Saturday in a league game, which ended goalless.
Ambrose fouled Hearts’ Sam Nicholson in the third minute of the added time to deny him a clear goal scoring opportunity which could have earned the visitors all three points.
The former Ashdod of Israel defender was sent off for the cynical foul, his first red card as a professional footballer.
Celtic are second on the table with 20 points from nine matches, four points clear of third-placed Hearts.

Efe Ambrose says no regrets over his dismissal

Celtic defender Efe Ambrose says he took his red card for his club
Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose has told AfricanFootball.com he does not regret being sent off to ensure his Scottish club Celtic did not lose at home against Hearts at the weekend.
Celtic fans hailed Ambrose’s selflessness when his last-ditch tackle stopped goal-bound Hearts Sam Nicholson from doing damage in the dying minutes of a goalless home draw with Hearts on Saturday.
The Nigeria international said he did not have any other option than to cause a professional foul and subsequently be sent off.
"I was happy to help my team get something from the game,” he told AfricanFootball.com
“I was the last man and so I had no choice but to make the tackle and save us from losing the game in the very last minute."
Champions Celtic are now second on the table with Hearts closely behind in third place.
Ambrose also came up against his national teammate Juwon Oshaniwa, who was solid in the Hearts defence.
"It was nice to be together again and play on the same pitch but I always prefer when we are playing together in the same team than playing on opposing sides," said the Celtic ace.

International Friendlies Nigeria U23
Why Oliseh called up Iwobi - NFF VP

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) 2ndvice president Shehu Dikko has clarified the rationale behind the invitation of Arsenal U21 star Alex Iwobi to the Super Eagles for a series of the friendlies against DR Congo and Cameroon next month.
Iwobi, 19, has been handed a late invitation by Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh.
Shehu Dikko, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria league, has now disclosed Sunday Oliseh did so for U23 coach Samson Siasia, who needs the youngster him for the U23s and he must therefore play at full international stage for Nigeria to make that happen.
"The call-up to Iwobi is simple a footballing as well technical one and for the good of the country. Iwobi has declared intention to represent Nigeria and he is good enough to represent Nigeria at U23 level. However, as he has played for England at the junior level he cannot play for Nigeria again at the junior level as FIFA would only approve his change of Nationality if he plays for the main Super Eagles,” wrote Shehu Dikko on his Facebook page.
“Therefore, his call-up now is to get his nationality change sorted and thus make him available to play for the Nigeria U23 If selected.
“Hence, Oliseh called him up on the request of Siasia who wants to use him for the U23s and by this action Nigeria will have secured his allegiance and this would also further motivate other players like him to come along.
“Finally on footballing terms, the potential of Iwobi is not in doubt based on what he did during Arsenal pre-season so in the long term this might be a very good decision for Nigeria and Iwobi."

Alex Iwobi scores for Arsenal U21s
Super Eagles surprise invitee Alex Iwobi was on target for Arsenal U21s on Friday when they beat Wolves U21s 3-2 to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season.
Arsenal lead the U21 League division 2 with 15 points from five games.
Iwobi scored Arsenal’s third when he capitalised on a defensive mix-up and slotted the ball past Flatt.
The Gunners recovered after Eusebio Bancessi opened the scoring for the hosts, with Chris Willock and Stephy Mavididi on target to give them the lead at half-time.
Iwobi reacted to a defensive mistake to add to the visitors' lead before Jordan Graham pulled one back to set up a tense finish.
But Arsenal held on to maintain their place at the top of the table.
He was on the bench for Arsenal main team in a 2-1 win at Tottenham in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.
