keshi's team that played the confederations cup wasnt the same team in the qualifying series. Our attack in the world cup was blunt, emenike had little support from the wing and could be seen drifting wide, our midfield couldnt link with attack and collapsed after onazi's injury, our defence wasnt tested much but was left exposed the few times it was. After onazils injury, keshi wasnt sure who to bring on and we were told mikel had to make that decision for him. I cant believe you mentioned the south african match, that was the only match in a very long time that made me truly ashamed of associating with eagles. It was as if we were playing bayern. I think the best term to describe a team that has been in it's rebuilding stage for almost 3years is dysfunctional.

As for the South African game, you forgot that earlier in the game, Musa missed two clear opportunities. Coach Keshi can not take the blame for such blatant misses. Later on, Uche missed a clear chance.

Also, Coach Keshi found the right balance with Hope Akpan shielding our defence. This gave Mikel the opportunity to express himself and Onazi the chance to bombard up and down the pitch. Unfortunately, injuries struck. Oboabona injured, Omeruo played after just recovering from an Injury and Hope Akpan injured. There was no way we could operate on the same level as our previous two games.

A tactical reshuffle almost saved the game but the earlier harm was too much for the team. Coach Keshi did a good job to cope with the injuries, lack of a contract or salary, the NFF stopping him from using Home based boys and the sacking of his assistant.

He deserves far more credit than he gets.

good, we are converging. At least you agree with me that even great tacticians may decide to look for set pieces to crack stubborn defences, we are making progress. Now prior to oliseh's reign, we were finding it difficult to convert set pieces, i remember when Nsofor scored a freekick and fans started clamouring for more of him. I'm sure keshi(a very good coach by the way) understood this fact but couldnt fix it. When oliseh came on board, he started working to fix this(as confimed by pinnick when he watched their trainin sessions). This tells you of a coach who already has his tactics lined up and is probably looking for a plan b. I'm not trying to blow oliseh's horn, i'm just sayingwhat a good tactician he is by trying to fix that raging loopholei'm sure even you agree he's a great tactician as according to you, he only lacks experience.

Please, I did not say great tacticians rely on free kicks and set pieces. I said a coach does it when the game is tough. Coach Oliseh might consider Swaziland tough and sharpen his players on set pieces.

If Pellegrini or Guardiola is Coaching Super Eagles today, he will coach them to crush Swaziland and not win by Free Kicks.

When we rate tactical brilliance, it is not from Set Pieces but the ability to attack and outplay your opponents.

a tactically brilliant coach is one who knows what best tactics to use at a particular point to prosecute a match that would guarantee to a large extent his 3points. For instance, a tactically brilliant coach sees that his free flowing pattern isnt working and quickly changes it to what would bring home the 3points. Defending for full 90 minutes is boring, i hope you're not thinking thats what i'm clamouring for. Improving your setpieces isnt the same thing as switching to a defensive pattern.

Look at this term, Masters Of The Game. If you know about Guardiola's philosophy, he believes he who controls the ball controls the game. He has mastered it. When he is adjusting his team, he adjusts them to execute his plans better. Not to change his game style.

Pellegrini hardly ever changes his style of play, even when he is playing tough sides, changing formation or players. The system does not change. Watch training sessions of Guardiola and Pellegrini. You see them spend a lot of time on passing drills.

I am not saying Free Kicks are in effective or not tactical. But, we can not say Arsene Wenger is a tactical genius because of Arsenal set pieces have improved. To know how much a team has improved, you judge the team from the amount of goals scored in open play.

If we are dependent on free kicks and set pieces, then we are far from the promise land

AF Nigeria 2016 CHAN Qualifiers Tanzania
2018 World Cup: Nigeria in race to improve FIFA ranking

Ighalo (left) against Swaziland in Port Harcourt

Nigeria will have about five months to improve their FIFA ranking ahead of the draw for the final round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in June.

Nigeria have featured at five World Cups including the last tournaments in 2010 and 2014, but they are 59thin the world and outside Africa’s top 10, which could mean they could draw very tough opponents in the final hurdle for qualification to Russia 2018.

On current ranking, Nigeria would be drawn in pot 3, which could see them draw tough teams like Ghana and Cameroon in the first two pots of the draw.

The Super Eagles have between now and June 24 to ensure they are better placed by the time of the draw so as to enjoy a more favourable draw.

Next year’s CHAN will be a big opportunity for Nigeria to enhance their FIFA ranking as the tournament is considered by FIFA as a full international competition.

An improvement on the team’s third place last year in South Africa will therefore go a long way in earning valuable points for the Super Eagles in the FIFA rankings.

Nigeria are drawn with Tunisia, Guinea and Niger in the group stage of the biennial competition, which kicks off on January 16.

Nigeria will also have two FIFA friendly windows before June 24 during which to improve their FIFA rankings.

The first such window will be between March 21 and 29, while the second window is between May 30 and June 7.

These windows will cover 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Egypt (in March) and Tanzania and Chad (between May and June) and good results from these matches will go a long way to lift the country from their current disappointing 59th position.

The failure of the Eagles to qualify for this year’s AFCON in Equatorial Guinea is believed to have contributed to the country’s poor rating by FIFA, which was the complete opposite when Nigeria won a third AFCON in South Africa in 2013.

Onazi injured on Eagles duty, out for 10 days

Eagles star Onazi is injured

Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi suffered a thigh strain when Nigeria defeated Swaziland 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday and will therefore miss this weekend’s Serie A clash against Palermo.

The Nigeria international has undergone tests and he will be out for about 10 days.

“The tests which were carried out showed the presence of a grade one strain of the adductor longus in the right thigh,” announced Lazio on their official website.

“The athlete will start specialised treatment today, and the recovery time will be determined after additional tests in a week or 10 days.”

The 22-year-old has made nine appearances for the Aquile so far this season, scoring once and providing one assist.

My Mother Foresaw My Goal Against Swaziland – Ambrose
BY TAOFEEK LAWAL

Nigeria international Efe Ambrose has told AfricanFootball.com his mother predicted his goal against Swaziland.

The Celtic defender scored the second goal three minutes from time to seal a 2-0 win for Nigeria over Swaziland on Tuesday in a Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier to advance to group stage of the qualifiers.

It was a “striker’s” goal as he dashed into the box to coolly help on a free kick by Sylvester Igbonu as Nigeria searched for a goal to cushion the pressure from Swaziland

The former FC Ashdod of Israel said her mother told him before the game that he will play well and cap a good game with a goal to help to Nigeria win.

“My mother, Alice Adievu Ambrose, predicted I am going to do well for Eagles against Swaziland and score a goal and it came to pass,” said an elated Ambrose.

“And so I dedicated the goal to her for her never-ending support and encouragement.”

Ambrose, who has represented Nigeria at U20 and U23 levels, has over 50 caps for Eagles.

Manchester City starlet, Kelechi Iheanacho says getting a chance to play for Nigeria’s national team is “a dream” and wants to become a Super Eagles legend in future.

Iheanacho was handed a call up by Nigeria head coach, Sunday Oliseh for the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying double header against Swaziland.

The 19-year-old was a second half substitute against Shilangu Semnikati in Lobamba but was only an unused substitute in the return fixture in Port Harcourt.

“It is a dream come true to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles. I was happy get the call and I want to use this opportunity to thank the coach and the Nigeria Football Federation for the opportunity,”
Iheanacho told supersport.com.

Iheanacho has already scored twice for Manchester City in all competitions this season and he hopes to bring his experience playing with some of the best footballers in world to bear on the national team.

“I am learning everyday at City playing and training with great players everyday.

“This will help me in the national team and I hope to play for the Super Eagles for many, many years,” he said.

Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme - A true pro says Wolves boss

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett has hailed Nigeria international Carl Ikeme as a real professional as he is set to return to the starting lineup for an English Championship clash on Saturday against Ipswich Town.

Arsenal loanee Emiliano Martinez has been ruled out of the game against Ipswich Town due to a thigh injury.

The injury forced Martinez off the field during the goalless draw with Burnley two weeks ago when Ikeme replaced him.

This is a chance for the 29-year-old Nigeria shot-stopper, who last started a Championship game for Wolves in August, to stake a claim for the goalkeeper’s jersey.

“He got a great reception when he came on against Burnley. He’s been very professional, done his work, trained very well. He’s very mature and a top-class professional,” Jackett remarked.

Africa’s WC qualifiers draw set for 24 June 2016

The draw for the group stage of CAF qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place in Cairo on 24 June 2016, FIFA announced on their official website on Friday.

Twenty nations have sealed their place for this third and final qualifying round, including Africa’s representatives at Brazil 2014 and South Africa 2010, Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria.

They will be divided into five groups of four teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches, with the winners of each group to qualify for Russia 2018.

“This is the latest step in a qualifying campaign that began for Africa in October 2015 with 53 nations taking part. Round 1 was contested by the 26 lowest-ranked member associations, the 13 winners from which went on to a second stage against the Confederation's remaining 27 nations,” FIFA stated.

“Just 20 teams now remain from that second round, all of whom will be eagerly awaiting this Round 3 draw, the procedures for which - including pots and seeded teams - will be announced in due course.”

Eagles: NFF Shops For Friendlies

Worries over team’s poor away record
As part of efforts towards preparing the Super Eagles for the tasks ahead, the Nigeria Football Federation has concluded plans to shop for top grade friendly matches for the team to enhance the rebuilding process embarked upon by coach Sunday Oliseh.

Two second half goals from Moses Simon and Efe Ambrose helped the Super Eagles scale the Swaziland hurdle and secure a place in the final group stage of qualifiers that will see 20 countries battling for the five available tickets to the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria advanced to the next round of the qualifying tournament on a 2-0 aggregate having played out a goalless draw with the Swazis in Lobamba last Friday.

According to a board member of the Nigeria Football Federation, who didn’t want his name on print, all efforts will be geared towards helping the team to succeed.

“The Super Eagles brand is our biggest property and we must ensure the team succeeds in all ramifications.

We understand the coaching crew is working hard in the rebuilding process as well as getting the desired results but we must help them by complimenting their efforts with top grade friendlies like what we had against Cameroon and DR Congo,” said the NFF board member.

The Super Eagles have found it difficult to grind out results when playing away from home and that is now a source of worry to the NFF.

The Eagles played out to a goalless away draw against Tanzania in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on September 5 and repeated another goalless draw in Swaziland last week in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

“With our critical situation in the AFCON qualifiers, we must not lose our two remaining away games to Egypt and Chad because we have been struggling to win away.

We need to secure victories in away games to enhance our chances of qualifying for tournaments.” The NFF board member however expressed optimism that the Eagles would be stronger and in better shape before the next set of AFCON qualifiers in March 2016.

“Our double header against Egypt in March will be very crucial to the Eagles. Also, the group stage qualifiers of the World Cup would be tougher considering the fact that the best 20 teams in Africa would be participating, so we must brace up for tougher challenges,” he noted.

The Eagles are expected to host Egypt on March 26 in Nigeria before travelling to Cairo for the return leg on March 28.

Nigeria: Oliseh Wants Friendly With 'Much Improved' Shilangu

By Christian Okpara
Super Eagles Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh, says he will like to meet Swaziland again when the build up to the African Nations Cup and Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers begins.

Nigeria defeated Swaziland 2-0 on Tuesday to book its place in the last qualifying round of the Russia 2018 World Cup.

The Eagles also have two crucial African Nations Cup qualifiers against Egypt in March next year.

And in preparing for the challenges, Oliseh believes playing against a team as strong as the Shilangu Semnika would keep his team in good shape for the battles.

"If I got a chance to play a friendly in the future I will invite Swaziland. Their FIFA ranking is totally not justified. We should congratulate them.

"They caused us a lot of problems; they were always compact and resilient. They played with their hearts over the two legs and made things pretty difficult for us," Oliseh said during the post match conference at the Adokie Amiesiamaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Oliseh, whose strikers have not been able to score after 180 hours of football, believes the goal drought is a temporary thing that would be corrected soon.

Nigeria drew goalless with the Swazis in Lobambo, while midfielder, Moses Simon and defender, Ambrose Efe, accounted for the Eagles 2-0 defeat of the Shilangu Semnika.

Oliseh points to the previous record of nine goals in his first eight games to buttress his point that the strikers are up to the task of shooting Nigeria to the 2017 Nations Cup and the 2018 World Cup.

"We have kept seven clean sheets and gradually the team is showing more aggression and creating more chances to score but we must be patient with our forwards, their goals will come," Oliseh said.

By Mansur Abubakar
Former Super Eagles shot stopper Idah Peterside says manager Sunday Oliseh was right to drop midfielder John Obi Mikel in Tuesday's 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying second leg match against Swaziland, saying the Chelsea player lacks the needed desire to appear for Nigeria.

In a twitter post on Wednesday, Peterside added it's important that Mikel looks himself in the mirror and tell himself the truth as it relates to his commitment to the national team.

"So Mikel sat on the bench? He already has money, the problem is he needs to have that hunger again, I love the boy but he needs to tell himself the truth, because there's something clearly wrong.

By the way Congratulations to Sunday Oliseh and the boys, we are proud of you" the former Maroka Swallows goalkeeper wrote on twitter.

To get the best from Mikel, we need another defensive midfielder who will sit behind and shield the defence. As long as Mikel is too concerned with the defence, he will hardly express himself and take risk. Just as when he had Ogude or Hope Akpan behind him.

I hope Coach Oliseh thinks of this.

Now that's another way to look at it. Well said.

In addition to this option we both discussed:
Mikel-Onazi midfield axis with another "suitable" player in the "10" role. Igboun is good but hasn't been able to make that "role" his own with conviction.

I could even come up with a "third option" **winks**

But hey! That's classified.... *smiles* Let's work with the above 2 first (one of them just have to pay off especially the "first" as seen in your post).

I personally feel Mikel should be excluded unless he moves in January. I agree that he is a great talent with something to offer and he could very well make this team great but as long as he only plays once in a while for his club I will have a problem with his selection. Mikel has been a fringe player for a couple years now we can't expect him to give us his best out of nowhere. Inviting him to me will keep him at Chealsea but if we drop him it will be an extra incentive for him to leave.

I agree with you when it concerns leaving the Stamford Bridge but I disagree with you when it comes to Mikel's importance to the Super Eagles. For the past years, despite the negative bashing, Mikel has clearly been the best Super Eagles player. He brought class and creativity.

I am not against Coach Oliseh dropping him. I am against inviting him to sit on the bench. Coach Westerhof dropped some Super Stars from the Super Eagles team like Friday Ekpo and Etim Esin. It did not stop Super Eagles from progressing.

Elated Ohawuchi confirms Zamalek interest

Ohawuchi could be on his way to Egyptian double kings Zamalek in the winter

Elated Nigeria striker Stanley Ohawuchi has confirmed Egyptian double champions Zamalek plan to sign him in the next transfer window.

Zamalek top official Ahmed Mortada Mansour said that the club are considering signing another centre-forward in the winter break to bolster a strike force that only comprises Bassem Morsi and Ahmed Hassan Mekki.

"Stanley is on our list. We are going to contact Wadi Degla about his availability in the upcoming few days," Mansour told Al-Nahar TV channel.

The former Nigeria youth international Ohawuchi, who has been impressive with goals for Wadi Degla since he joined in the summer of 2014 from Sliema Wanderers of Malta, disclosed he is elated that a top team like Zamalek are interested in him.

"Zamalek have been interested in me since last season, they have come again this season that they want me. They have contacted my agent on this,” revealed Ohawuchi.

"All I can say now is to give thanks to God because it's the Lord's doing to attract such interest because I have been doing well."

The former Nigeria youth international is the leading scorer in Egypt this season with six goals.

He scored 16 goals for his Cairo club Wadi Degla last season.

He didn't criticise he basically said we won't qualify with Oliseh. If it were any other ex coach saying that we would have all unanimously called it hate but now all of a sudden it is constructive. Big countries in Europe struggle all the time with so called smaller countries, Holland will not be at the Euro's (maybe westerhof can go give them advice). I don't read into too much of what people say but when it is in turn bashing Nigeria i take an exception, why won't we be at the world cup? Oliseh is our man hired and paid and so we should surport him as long as he holds the job. btw Oliseh was not an amateur player when he made his debut.
I can tell you confidently say that, this man (Westerhof) seems to be eying a come back with the national team. That was how he criticizing Stephen Keshi, during his second contract.

I don't really know if we wants to paint our local Coaches bad before their employers. I strongly feel Westerhof should call Coach Sunday Oliseh aside and tell him what and what he needs to put in place, in his own opinion, than resorting to criticisms of our national Coaches in the media. Better still he can be more diplomatic and constructive enough so that his position on our national team will not be misunderstood

That is it. I even see Coach Oliseh surpassing all expectations and churning out a better record with the Super Eagles, even given the needed support and time.

He may not have started well, but I still expect him to learn on the job and prove us all wrong

Ighalo: My Eagles Goals Will Come, Watford’ll Give United A Good Fight

Nigeria and Watford striker Odion Ighalo in this interview with Completesportsnigeria.com's JOHNNY EDWARD reveals reasons why Super Eagles struggled to beat Swaziland and promises to give Manchester United a tough time on Saturday…

Two games no goals for you but the Super Eagles qualified for the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. How does this feat make you feel?

Firstly, I give thanks to God that we qualified against a tough team like Swaziland. It was not an easy round because we played against a side that deployed more bodies in defence.

They gave us a good fight. The first leg was on an artificial turf which affected the way we played and also the flood lights were not bright enough for us to play with.

There were other unpleasant conditions but I’m happy we have qualified and I’m looking forward to the draws.

As regards the goals, I wasn’t too happy because I didn’t get to score but the fact that the team won is great. I worked hard for the team but the goals didn’t come but I was glad that the coach was pleased with my performances in the two games.

I helped my team keep the ball and gave everything to score. I know many expect me to score just like I do for my team in England but most times it doesn’t work that way.

I know the goals will still come because I am working hard to maintain that form of scoring in every game. To my fans, I’m sorry I didn’t score.

Now that Nigeria have qualified and might not be seeded in the group stage draw, are you scared of they may be drawn against the likes of Cote d’Ivoire Cameroun, Ghana and South Africa in the group phase of the 2018 World Cup?

We are not scared of any team and won’t underrate any team as well. In Africa there are no minnows anymore; we saw what Swaziland did to us away and how Ghana were held at Comoros so the tide is changing and we will be better going ahead.

We just have to work harder and keep to the tactics of our coach.
With Sunday Oliseh’s tactical acumen we can face any team. I don’t prefer any team I just pray for a favourable draw because the aim is to qualify for the World Cup.

This weekend, your team Watford, 11th in the English Premier League table, host Manchester United at Vicarage Road. United may likely be without some of the top players like Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling and the rest. What are your chances?

Manchester United are a big team in England and one of the biggest sides in world club football. Against them it won’t be easy and that’s why Watford have been pushing hard to stay in the league.

Going into the game we are the underdogs and they will be difficult to beat but we will give it our very best to win and stay up on the log as long as we can.
Nobody can predict the outcome but they will get a good fight on Saturday.

Lastly, what do you make of coach Sunday Oliseh?

He is a strict coach and one that knows what he wants from his team. Since my first encounter with him he has never changed.

He doesn’t want to know where you play for so long as you give him what he wants on the pitch and he’s not scared to throw you out when you’re not performing.

I think that those were few of the reasons he was appointed. In a nutshell, he’s a strict professional and a disciplinarian.

Why not, who else remembers how Emmanuel Emenike started poorly with the Super Eagles, in front of goal when he made his first debut under the then' Coach Samson Siasia? At some point I was just wondering, if Emmanuel Emenike was even worth the call up. As time went on Emenike made his mark and became our savior just like Ukechukwu Uche, scoring important goals for us, when we most needed them.

Your goals will surely come for the Super Eagles, all you need to do is to learn how to manage your anxiety and aggression in front of goal so that you do not become our another version of Brown Ideye

Can you get us matches where Westerhoff's Eagles won by 7-0 against lowly African oppositions?
Good good good question. They just sit back and criticize as if history is not watching. One thing I notice is that, every country has her own unique football culture or jinx that affects generations. Breaking this jinx requires a lot from the players and the Coaches, not just a one affair.

The rich culture of or history of Nigeria football, Super Eagles in particular shows that, our national team struggle a lot when they face smaller African Countries. No doubt about that. If not how come we didn't find it that difficult to score against Cameroun?

Orkpekyandega:

I can tell you confidently say that, this man (Westerhof) seems to be eying a come back with the national team. That was how he of criticizing Stephen Keshi, during his second contract.

My point exactly. This man coached Nigeria for years but were are the coaches he trained? He never thought it would be nice to get a couple Nigerian coaches and polish them. I always say that if they look hard enough even Barca can find a non league player in Nigeria that will perform, football talent is and has never been our problem, our only issue is at the management aspect and what can we say this man has done to improve that department.

Martins Wins Sounders’ Golden Boot, MVP Awards

Nigeria forward, Obafemi Martins, has been voted Seattle Sounders best player for the second straight season, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The pacy hitman also won the club’s Golden Boot award after netting 15 times to emerge the Major League Soccer side’s top scorer for the season.

Martins also notched up six assists in 21 appearances for the Sounders.

It was a remarkable performance for the former Inter Milan of Italy goal getter who spent two months out injured.
Last season, he also won the MLS Most Valuable Player runner-up award.

His exploits in the MLS earned him a shot on the international scene once again as he was recently handed a call-up to the Super Eagles by Sunday Oliseh.

He featured in both legs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Swaziland.

Werder Bremen striker Anthony Ujah has set his sights on an invitation back to the Super Eagles.

The former Cologne forward's last game for the Eagles was in a 2-0 international friendly win against Niger Republic in Port Harcourt.

In a chat with Brila FM, Ujah stated that he believes he is good enough for the Eagles.

"What is important for me now is to focus on doing well for Werder Bremen in the league in order to stand a chance of getting back into the national team.

"I'm still young and I believe I have a lot to offer the team if given the opportunity to prove myself," Ujah, who has scored seven goals in 14 appearances for Bremen this season, said.

Meanwhile, Ujah is expected to be in action for Bremen as they will be guests of Wolfsburg in this weekend's league game.

As for Chelsea, that is a tight game. Unfortunately, Barca had the game but a Puyol wrong decision caused Barca

When we talk of tactically brilliant coaches, a park bus set piece coach can never be among the list.

That is why the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona continue ruling.

but when talking of tactically brilliant coaches a mourinho will always be ahead of a guardiola ermm bros what makes u think a Chelsea team that played to formation would lose to a team blinded by tiki taka

Mikel has not been our best player and I am sure Enyeama and Moses would agree with me on that. Players who don't play should not be on the team, form is something u gain with matches not training. We have a whole league and thousands of players abroad I am sure we will do just fine until he figures himself out.
