before in rivers state, the state of primary schools were nothing to write home about, but today the case is different.

If I had a kobo for every time this line had been used by successive governments in Nigeria, I would be a billionaire.

Every time someone wants to boast, he claims things were rubbish before him and he was the one who did all the repairs and improvements. Why this constant need for a Messianic change? Before Amaechi rubbish, during Amaechi's rule eldorado - this very thinking will then lead to second term and third term aspirations before long.

Even the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) being harped on about by the Rivers Government was initiated by the previous administration, but the news you'd hear these days would make you feel it was Amaechi that magically brought it about when he came into office.

Till we de-personalise governance and make it more about building lasting institutions and not glorifying individuals, we will continue to have this problem.

We don't need 100 years to build Lagos-Ibadan expressway or to ensure that Rivers indigenes have sufficient healthcare given the revenue flowing into the state coffers.

ironic statement, given the fact that most nairaland naysayers are constantly looking for a messiah who will transform Nigeria overnight in a miraculous magical display of power.

vicious cycle it is.

I think there is a distinction to be made. Purposeful leadership has the effect of creating a conducive atmosphere for other creative abilities within the country to operate. It is the effect of engaging and activating the majority of the country to work that causes the change, not a 'magical display' as such. . .in my opinion at least.

Nah, Amaechi has enough cash to sponsor a an agent to do this work for him. It could even be a wannabe trying to get a job as a press consultant or something, just like Fani-Kayode did a few years ago. The guy would go everywhere defending Obj and a few months later got a job. grin grin

Nigerian is a country where our leaders steal money and use a microscopic amount of that money to carry out below par white elephant projects making us realise they are doing us a huge favour and  we in turn praise them to high heavens for stealing from us and mercifully giving us little back.
@Poster,
Shame On You!

Let's give kudos to a step in the right direction. while i do not subscribe to the 'Rome was not built in a day, so Nigeria cannot be developed rapidly' theory, it's hard not to realise that he could just as well have eaten ALL the money without doing anything and no-one would have done anything to him.
I can use Lucky Igbinedion as an example of someone who did nothing. Till today, he walks the streets with impunity!

While I see your point tex, this type of thinking is VERY dangerous. It lowers the standard to the level that stealing 'only' 80% and 'doing something' with 20% is seen as some achievement. undecided

That type of thinking will only bring about leaders who feel they do not need to commit the states' resources to proper use, but doing 'something' will be sufficient. Our standards have been too low and we must continue to DEMAND for complete accountability, even if it seems a long way off.

A step in the right direction is when ALL the money gets used for the purposes intended, but then if the money was poorly or inefficiently allocated, we can criticise on that ground. I refuse to accept anything beyond that as movement in the right direction.

Tex,
What Step In the Right Direction are you talking about?
You mean we should applaud this bastards for stealing and robbing it on our faces?
I once had a discussion with an uncle on the de merits of the military era and he uttered a statemant I would never forget while comparing past rulers of a state, He said and I quote ''Onyearugbulem is a thief too but he stole and executed some projected to cover for his theft, that is the kind of leader we should Hope for right now''
That statement captures the mentality of an average Nigerian and It's really Bad.
We don't really need to settle for anything less by trying to bring out any good in these Looters.
As for Igbinedion,
I remembered the Elder Igbinedion telling the Critics of his Son during his re election campaign that ''When A Pikin Fail For School No Be to Repeat Be The Next Thing?''

It is also laughable and preposterous how these "Rome wasn't built in a day" proponents feel we MUST negotiate ALL the tedious and gruesome corners and setbacks other developed countries had and experienced,to reach our own El Dorado angry .

Nigerians and excuses.Once our under-development was linked to the militaries and their peremptory fiat. Now the reason for the interregnum is explained off as ''Rome wasn't built in a day".

Someday this vultural patience displayed by the masses WILL run out and we all know what that will lead to.

What i feel is dangerous is to take eyes off the prize.
What Nigerians need is better living conditions, better amenities, better utilization of taxpayers' moneys, better. . .everything!
What Amaechi is doing will bring the end result of achieving some of those things. Take a look at Lagos where a cynic like myself may feel that Fashola is merely doing what he's expected to do. But to deny that the People that drive through Oshodi have cause to be happy with the recent development driven by him is wrong.

Let's be quietly happy with whatever legal activity that brings development and improvement to the lives of the common folk out there. In the meantime, there's nothing stopping us from striving for perfection in our leaders.

i have just been quiet , reading all ur replies, the truth is that, if 90% of you condeming dis governor assumes the positon of governor, u will do worst dan him, im sure dere will be nothing left in the state coffers by d time u are true, Niaja has a bad name outside 2day cos of the high rate of crime perpetrated by its citizens, if we as individuals cant be sincere in our private dealings, how much more wen we are handed over public funds wit imunity covering us, look at pots callin kettle black,
As far as im concerned, my governor is doin a good job, come to rivers state and see with ur eyes, not pics,
Re: Gov Amaechi Doing Great Works In Rivers State by debosky(m): 5:29pm On Apr 15, 2009
The usual descent into name calling. Did someone beg Amaechi to be governor? Of course we demand that he do a good job - that is why we are paying him. It is not a charitable or voluntary post.

I have seen some condemnation, but most people have asked for further clarification of just how much he is spending vis a vis his resources in order to make an accurate judgment.

The truth is that Odili had as many pictures as these, and even more, yet in the end it was widely suspected that he was extremely corrupt. Not being able to do better is not a reason not to criticize.

I may not be able to deliver babies, but if the doctor trained and paid to do so fails, I have every right to criticize. Amaechi is supposed to develop Rivers with the resources he is entrusted with. We will continue to demand true accountability and not mere pictures in order to accurately judge performance.

And where did i ask you to be content with the present state of things?
I have not called for celebrations. At the same time i'll not carelessly deride anything that brings some positive change in the living conditions of our people.
I left Lagos last week after a brief visit. Seven different taxi drivers without prompting were singing the praises of the Governor for his work on restoring some sanity to some notoriously riotous places like Oshodi. Why should i turn my nose up at progress, even if it's somewhat tainted?

I do not think I have the moral right to condemn or approve Amaechi because I have not been in PH since he became governor and this is probably the first time Il hear anyone praise him however, the only thing I have heard about Amaechi is what I will comment about. The way he handled 'terrorism' in Rivers State, daring the so called militants and calling their bluff is commendable. I also admire his courage in fighting Odili to the ground such that the guy now has to run around begging courts and 'surrounding himself with injunctions' like someone above rightly stated.

I do not blame those that are praising him now too. If you had been in PH during Odili's reign and if you rate how much Rivers State got compared to what he did, you will understand why if Amaechi digs a borehole, the whole Rivers State will rejoice. Odili only syphooned money. He even had a nickname to that effect.

Finally, Im impressed that Nigerians are now more critical. Years ago, people would have jumped on the bandwagon praising him for building classrooms, hospitals, etc. I remember how Tinubu used to 'advertise' in newspapers whenever he builds one of his millineum classrooms and I used to get really angry when people praise him and say 'o man try ke' (translation: he is really trying), wondering what his job was in the first place. Now Im glad Nigerians are more aware and those governors cannot bamboozle us with newspaper pictures again. Infact, the FG should ban any governor from spending state money on newspaper/tv ads.

Kudos to Nigerians, step by step,

We will get there!
Re: Gov Amaechi Doing Great Works In Rivers State by Ibime(m): 7:36pm On Apr 15, 2009
Kudos to Amaechi. Word on the street is that he is doing comparatively well.

However, we cannot forget his past. He was former speaker of the house and oversaw many atrocities in Okrika, or at least he said or did nothing about them. We also do not forget that he was eating from the same pot as Odili and Abiye Sekibo and was involved in all their shady dealings. That said, he's done well to arrest militancy. There is still some distrust of him from the Ijaw-half of PH because of some waterfront demolitions, so we greet his achievements with nothing more than measured approval. However, he is 100 times better than Odili.

Firstly is kobojunkie officially declared a she in nairaland,

Secondly i love the role playing gov ameachi has been doing. You know the go to a hospital in disguise and find out the whole place is not been attended to by the doctors and nurses that ought to do that. Or the visit he had to a school and overheard the vice talking trash and then demoting them both to become teachers again.
