My dear Port Harcourt people! Where can one get a well equiped Cosmetic shop in PH? not all these supermarkets with a few shelves for Cosmetics.

I would like a shop that is fully into cosmetics.

@ Sandylurv and Shinatu, I would have been surprised if I saw these rare stuffs on Henroll's tables. I checked Destiny and Maris Supremarts in Owerri town but they both don't sell both Glycolic acid (pls forget Salicylic acid my peeps)and Retin-A (Vitamin A/Tretinoin). I've asked my cousin in d States 2 help me out while I check our big local stores in Nigeria. Let's chat more on Whatsapp's Instant Messenger so dat U can get d info firsthand and also debrief me on the trends in d cosmetic/beauty sector

That said, i'v been having hyperpigmentation issues since I went for service. I used a hydroquinone cream to treat but I never did any research then, and I did not use sunscreen along with the cream. These lightening creams make your skin more sensitive to the sun. When you use a lightening cream and you don't cover up with sunscreen, the cream oxidises with the sun and the adverse reaction is that your skin gets darker! The irony. The hyperpigmentation started to clear and then I got waaay darker.

I realized my face was getting darker as I was using my fair and white cream, then Palmers. All those hours marching under the sun and I didn't know I was further damaging my skin. I eventually did some research and realised my mistake.

Hydroquinone is supposedly safe in concentrations of 2% but prolonged use leads to darkening also. So after using it for a long while, I decided to stay away.

Hydroquinone works. Use it on the problem area and once the hyperpigmentation clears, stop using it. It's a treatment cream not just a moisturizer. If you use it for 4 months with no improvement, discontinue use. Some creams advice this (E.g fair n white).

There are safer lightening ingredients out there. Kojic acid is one. It's more stable than hydroquinone and there is no suspected carcinogenic effect. Lactic acid is another. It's from sour milk and it lightens with gradual use. It's an Alpha hydroxy Acid as you well know. There’s Glycolic acid of course, this helps with cell renewal. It dissolves the glue holding dead cells together so they can shed. These are some safer alternatives to hydroquinone. I use Meladerm for my pigment problems. It's slow but it's safe and it works. Some others have been mentioned in older pages.

I also have whiteheads. The good thing about whiteheads is that they aren't very visible unless I puff out my cheeks. I have them all over my face! But they get better if you watch what you eat. I use products with 2% salicylic which doesn't do much for my skin (oily skin) . I'l advice a cleanser specifically for acne and an astringent or a toner with witch hazel if you don't want your skin dried out. Also, use a toner with glycolic acid. E.g. Neutrogena's Pore Refining Toner, it has glycolic acid and witch hazel. Always check the ingredients of your products.

And most importantly watch what you eat. I used to have big pimples along with whiteheads years ago. I stay way from oily foods. I dnt eat fried meat and can't remember the last time I ate butter! I use canola or soy bean oil to make dodo. No matter what you use, if you still take oily foods, your skin will NOT get better. No be say na jazz.

And also, have a good facial regime. Cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize.

Two mistakes people with oily skin make:
Over exfoliating. Scrubbing your face too hard with your scrub can cause little nick's on your skin and this can trigger melanin synthesis. Even when the really tiny cuts heal, they leave black spots. Black skin produces melanin too easily. Also exfoliating too frequently isn't good. Don't exfoliate everyday. Twice or thrice week is ok. Don't over work your skin.

Second mistake is not moisturising because you have oily skin. So wrong! When you don't moisturize, your sebaceous glands produce excess oil to keep your skin soft and supple and you end up with more clogged pores. Use an oil free "non-comogenic" moisturizer. Check the cream description, it should be written there.

Steam your face 1ce a week for at 15mins.this will soften and open up ur pores. Cleanse and exfoliate immediately after steaming to get all the goo out.

And don't forget sunscreen or sunblock. It can be hard getting one that doesn't leave a white cast on your face.Just reduce the qquantity and spread it out evenly over your face. Stick to this. Make sure it's broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) and at least spf 30 for this our hot and sunny climate. And remember to apply every 2 hours.

And never go to bed without cleansing and moisturising at night.

Last piece of advice, when treating your skin, try and go without foundation! It covers the pores and doesn't let them breathe. And if you must use powder, use loose powder and apply with a brush. This spreads it out evenly and doesn't cover the pores as much as pancake would.

Also don't get a facial just anywhere or without them analysing your skin first. Some places use the same facial ingredients for dry skin and oily skin and it shouldn't be so. Different types of skin require different treatment. My friend got one 5 weeks before a wedding, she was the chief bridesmaid n broke out in fat, nasty pimples. 5 weeks after, she had dark skin and still had the pimples on her face and had to cover them up with make up for the wedding but they were still quite visible. She most likely reacted to something they used. She's using an ointment for the, Skineal. Benzoyl peroxide didn't work for her.

There is only so much the skin can take. You can't say you are treating malaria and you sleep without using a mosquito net or using insecticide in your room.
Be good to your skin.

Very oily skin here. Think my cleanser might be too harsh. There’s a post that is missing by uber_chic @Moderator. The one explaining products and skin types. I just refreshed and its gone.

"Pls be careful what you use for your skin. So many of us in our quest to have clear smooth skin, we use anything or everything anyone here says worked for them. At the end of the day, the skin we are trying to improve is what suffers.

Understand your skin cos we all have different types of skin regardless of ethnicity. Is your skin oily? Dry? Combination? Sensitive? Selectively sensitive? Acne prone? What's your Fitzpatrick Skin Type? These are things you should know about your skin.

Research a product before you get it. What is the active ingredient? Is it suitable for your skin type? If you have oily skin, is the product oil free? Will it clog your pores? Etc. Someone marketing a product will tell you what the product is supposed to do and not even know what the product might do. This is when someone uses a cream for hyperpigmentation and then breaks out in huge pimples. Go online, read user reviews. Reviews of other with skin similar to yours. A product that might work for dry skin might cause irritation to oily skin etc.

I see someone saying she uses a peel every night. Chemical peels work to damage the top layer of your skin, the damaged skin then sheds to reveal new fine skin. Using a peel too frequently might will eventually thin out your skin because you don't give it enough healing time. Wait for at least 3 weeks before you do another peel.

Find out which is best for you. Don't just get a salicylic peel cos someone here used it and it worked wonders for her. We all have different types of skin and just as many different types of peels. There is Salicylic, Lactic acid which is gotten from sour milk and lightens. There is Glycolic which exfoliates the skin by disintegrating the glue that holds the dead skin together, allowing it to shed easily. There is Jessner Peel, Malic acid, Kojic acid peel, HQ+ peel, Pumpkin enzyme peel and TCA peel which is not recommended for black skin but works well for some. Research these peels if you can't go to a dermatologist and carefully decide which is good for you. "
