the coup didn't succeed because one of the coup plotters, Major Adewale Ademoyega, developed cold feet.
You see the problem with some people when we say they act and react based on beer parlour stories or stories told by their parents who were maybe illetrates or who were educated illitrates.
With all you must have read, and even with the easiest way to information in your hand, you were still foolish enough to type such.
Am so sorry for you.

I so much hate the way media capture sweet stories in terrible manners. Who knows maybe my story will be tagged "I am happy I saw my Dad's Corpse" after reading my story. Well, I understand the narrator most have gotten past the pain of her parents' demise, but some memories will just not leave. I for one lost my father at the age of 11. He left Nigeria when I was 3yrs and I never saw him again. The only memory of seeing him physically I have, was during the Christian wake-keeping when he was flown home. He was a great man anyways, and never ran away from his responsibilities, and was always keeping in touch with the family. Everything I used in primary school were all "janded", even up to my erasers, pencils and sharpeners...you could always tell they were not from Nigeria (of course I need not tell you how my shoes, bags, cloths, etc will look like) . My toys were extremely classy...infact as I am typing now, I will just end up writing an "epistle" just as the narrator did, I I don't stop here.
There were sad parts of it too...I was in a boarding sch from jss1 to ss3, and I remember how I pay close attention when I hear my friends (especially the Day_students) talking about how their fathers took care of them a night before , even how their fathers flog them when they erred (I never got such experience). I remember how I wake up around 12am on my bunk on many occasions to which I have lost counts, and "cry my eyes out" till 6am. No one to share my pains with. Though I cannot say I knew my father, I also cant say I didn't know him. However, I am forever grateful to God for giving me a chance to see my Father's corpse, and know what he looks like with my "koro-koro" eyes (not pictures). Many People didn't get that chance especially those in the orphanage (I am not ridiculing them, but appreciating God more), or those that lost their fathers at tender ages. Many grown ups who still have fathers, have irresponsible fathers (I have friends like that). So on the long run, I am forever grateful to God for the privilege.
Finally, that's when you get to know true and loyal friends. You get to know those that are only after what they can get, and those that assure you of empty promises with their sugar-coated mouth (I mean why keep one's hopes high when you know deep down that you have no intentions of keeping the promise?)
Bottom-line: I completely comprehend the narrator. In whatever situation you find yourself , always give thanks, 'cause your situation (no matter how bad you feel it is), is way better than many people's, when compared. Shalom

It's military strategy. IBB killed Vatsa, his best man on his wedding day - for allegedly plotting to overthrow him

Why spoil a good script by being logical, vis-a-vis Nigerian military coup tactics.
This topic about the officer's daughter eye-witness narration, though emotional is real and proper from a personal stance. And being retold to massage and engender a particular audience.

Zik was said to have been aware of the coup so reason for his Caribbean cruise the one sided coup staged by the ( I Before Orders) which saw the brutal killings of Balewa the Prime minister, Sir Ahamadu Bello, Chief S L Akintola , Chief Okotieboh, General Ademulegun and many other Hausa and Yoruba big wigs without any IBO political bigwig being a victim of the one sided IBO staged coup and this is where we now find our selves today.

They keep referring to Azikwe as the head of the government then, meanwhile Balewa was stronger than him, can someone please explain to me in details?

I read a book written by Frederick Forsythe; The making of an African legend(The Biafra story) that Ahmadu Bello preferred his position as the saradauna of Sokoto to the position of prime minister, he was reported to have said that he would rather send one of his lieutenants to do the job. My question is that why would someone choose to be a leader of a region over ruling a country?

{It was also stated that Balewa was his second in command.}

Aha. Someone willing to learn.

You see, during the good old days of the regions (Western, Northern, Eastern, Mid-Western), each of the regions were semi-autonomous. And they paid taxes to the center which was quite weak. The leader of each region was a strong man. The center was weak. It worked well, until some adventurers thought it was best to annex the center and make it VERY strong using a decree called Decree 34. The idea of a strong center had earlier been mooted by a certain Nnamdi Azikiwe (who happens to be a cousin to the leader of the "failed" coup - a man called Ifeajuna). They always wanted such a strong center because they did not like the idea of being stuck in their regional civil service. They wanted to be able to go to other regions and work in that region's civil service.

Unfortunately, they gave the Northerners an idea of how to hold on to power; so here we are today.

cool For years I have been telling my Yoruba people to beware of Ibos. Especially these liberal Yorubas like Soyinka/FFK who go out of their way to support ANYTHING Ibo. These liberals believe if they just ignore reality it will disappear. Sensibly identifying the proclivities and characteristics of a people is not tribalism - it is coming face to face with reality. No one is asking you to hate them but just understand who they are and their inclination for the most unbelievable level of treachery. cool

Those demonic soldiers, both the Igbos and Yorubas caused the pogrom that claimed the innocent lives of more than 30, 000 Igbos in northern Nigeria and more than 1, 000, 000 lives during the catastrophic Biafran War.
Anyone calling for Biafra again is Satanic.

Yes, it's a military thing. But military people I'm familiar with are way too honorable to kill a pregnant woman. That's the difference. That should tell you the nature of these coup plotters; they were definitely not heroes nor patriots.

There are many things emotion doesn't allow us to reason properly about. First, I've battled Ibo people tire about Nigerian Civil War and I insist they deserve even worse as they've not been able to learn any lessons even in 2016, from 1966. But let me point out a thing or two from this very interview. The plotters shot the woman first. There's no way that was part of the plan. She was an unexpected hindrance to their plans. Remember these guys have prepped for a kill. When she had been shot, they probably realise that wasn't the goal and then took the guy they were after to be shot somewhere else. Maybe they couldn't finish her off because they couldn't bring themselves to repeat the error. Painful to contemplate leaving her in a worse state, but entirely possible. Secondly, as you can see from the interview, the then girl didn't know if her mom was pregnant. Pregnancy takes nine months to term and it doesn't always show itself as a big stomach the whole time. If human beings could dispassionately look at issues, it would save them from a whole lot of disaster. Ibos went to war and lost 1 million lives, with unspeakable hardships and destruction of their land because they were angry that they initially lost 30,000 people after the counter-coup. That's stupidity and that's stupidity that reigns to this day in Nigeria.
I affirm that the first coup was a conspiracy amongst the Ibo elite, the extent of which wasn't even known to some of the Ibo plotters like Nzeogwu himself, let alone Ademoyega. I take solace in the fact that the evil mastermind of it all, Emmanuel Ifeajuna, was shot at the stake by his fellow Ibo on the orders of Ojukwu. What a tragic set of misadventurers

Never trust a man with a flat head from the east.
Even if you do business with them, to kill you and take over the business is what they will be looking for.
They only give you their temporary loyalty if there is personal gain involved.

If you see a flat head and a snake, dude, hug a snake.

There is no tribe in Nigeria called Anioma. Nzeogwu was 100% an Igbo man from Okpanam in present day Delta state although he was born grew up in Kaduna and could speak Hausa and Igbo fluently. It is unfortunate that the first coup was not bloodless but that is the nature of the game sometimes.

Who cares about the presidency? Have you seen any tribe that presidency has benefited? You will call them names but tomorrow you will be fighting to do 'one Nigeria' with the same people.

Long and short; these guys were cold blooded murderers. Remember even one of the wives of the Sardauna was shot dead. It was no error. They just did not care who they killed. That night at the palace, Nzeogwu personally shot 3 of the guards and one of his own subordinates who did not follow orders quickly enough.

blackprowler:

Secondly, as you can see from the interview, the then girl didn't know if her mom was pregnant.
She was confirmed pregnant. That was why she, who was only 6 years old at the time was asked. The interviewer already knew she was pregnant at the time she was murdered.

Yes, Ifeajuna the mastermind knew exactly the purpose of the coup. He used Awolowo's detention to fool Ademoyega knowing the typical educated Yoruba man's deification of Awo. Awo was in jail, and according to them they wanted to release him and make him Prime Minister. So how come no action (and I mean NONE at all) was observed at the Calabar Prison where Awo was being held at the time? That says a lot.

that was a military coup. It happens every where in the world even till date, I don't it has anything to do with tribe. Or better ask buhari if it was an igbo man that plotted the coup to remove him.
